  • Today we're taking an In-Depth look at Speed cranking for bass in Fall and Winter. We're covering everything from beginner basics, up to the most advanced details of color, cadence, and fish location. If you want to take your crankbait fishing to the next level this Fall, this video is for you!
Speed cranking involves specialized crankbaits designed to be fished at high rates of speed in order to trigger a feed response in bass. It works from September to March, even in the coldest water temperatures. You know longer have to slow fish with finesse baits in Fall and Winter, its time to power fish your way to a new personal best!
Below you'll find links to the exact baits we use for this technique. We've included our favorite models, best colors, as well as hook and hardware upgrades. Additionally we've included links to the rod and reel combos discussed in the video, our storage boxes, and any other relevant information. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

I noticed while reading the comments that Matt and Tim are the only content creators I have ever seen respond to the initial comment, and then the follow up if the original commentor asks a follow up question!! If anyone ever has a question about Tim and Matt’s integrity, I would point to this video, and tell them to see for themselves. Without question the two most in depth, genuinely passionate angling educators to be found.

Great information as always! I have been speed cranking since I 1st heard you guys talking about it and have caught a ton of bass and many other species of fish. This summer, I caught my biggest largemouths speed cranking. It truly opened my eyes a few winters ago. It was late December, extremely cold out, water temps were around mid to low 40s and I was fishing for stripers. I was trolling in deep, open water with cranks. My trolling speed was about 2.5mph and I was catching largemouths. I couldn't believe how fast the largemouth were able to react to the baits. I was raised on the notion that you have to SLOW DOWN in the winter because the bass won't exert themselves as much. I'm here to tell you that is not always the case. I have witnessed it 1st hand. Great video.

  • @chaseD707

I had never thrown any kind of deeper style cranks until about 6 months ago when I got my first boat and my closest lake has a ton of deep deep water. That’s when I fell in love with deep cranking it absolutely slays mondo smallies even hits big big walleye by accident I love it I just went out and bought every speed slash deep crank you guys recommend but my favorites so far are the tactical crank for sure and the mega bass deep six and deep x 300. I also like a good flat sided crank gives a lot tighter wobble

I whole heartedly agree. For me cold air and water here in georgia in nov. - feb. I throw deep diving cranks. It was shown to me by a fellow fisherman. Try to hit anything, stop it let it back up and float that's when a reaction bite happens. I've had ice on my eyelets and the fish behaved like it never was a factor. I realized the slow down, creep it, lethargic fish is no where an absolute. It opened my eyes.

With this video I pieced the puzzle together and found out the cadence, hg reel, and deep x 300 was why lol. I've been looking into more cranks that have a tighter wobble and sound and found the O.S.P Blitz EX DR and MAX DR cranks work pretty well also.

I went with your budget recommendation for rod and reel combo from your last jerkbait video. I received it last Friday and went out on the Kanawha River here in Charleston Wv, the fishing can be really tough here. I only had a couple of hours to fish but wanted to test the rod and reel. I loved it, very light-weight and smooth. I could feel and see the difference in my jerkbait action. I caught a small largemouth then followed it with a nice striped bass. The rod handled it just fine. I appreciate the recommendation and would recommend others to try it. The rod made a difference.

Man you just made me cry! Two days ago I had that exact situation that you described throwing a square bill along a rock dam with a 8.2 real. I had set the hook but nothing moved, I started to think I got it hung in the rock's then all of a sudden I felt two head shakes then it pulled about a foot of line and was gone. I still had my bait my hooks were not bent but it was gone!

Great video thanks ! I got frustrated one night fishing the bank cause they weren’t biting my cb so I started burning it with pauses and caught a bunch of bass for about 30 minutes. It works no doubt and I was using some of those strike king flat sided baits which for all I know might not have been the right cb but it worked.
What I need more than anything is a good winter bass fishing glove if anybody knows of one ?

Ive been meaning to pose a challenge for you guys for a while now and fall is the best time, a good chunk of your audience has smelt for bait fish instead of shad. Mature smelt stay in open water all year except for spawning. when the fall transition starts the yearlings leave shallow weed beds for deep schools.
Id love to see you guys fish some smelt lakes and tell us what you’ve learned…. Maybe specifically in the finger lake region 😉

I did boat a bunch of 4-5 pounders mid-November on DD-75s at Lake Picachos, a lake known more for numbers than size, so they were the best of the 250+ fish I put in the boat during my 3 days there. I'm going back in February so we'll see what I can dredge up on that trip.

Man this video gets me fired up a lot like the jerk bait video. I LOVE LOVE LOVE fishing cold weather bassin.
Idea on swapping those treble hooks. If you don't have split ring plyers (like me most of the time) I've learned that once you get the ring open and start the hook coming off, go ahead and slide the new hook eye into the gap. It will follow the other eye around and snap in while the old one comes off. That way there is no need to bend a fingernail out the 2nd time..LOL
THANKS again for the awesome info on you videos.

Thank you for this great video. This morning I tried the speed cranking and caught a bass and even carp by crankbait(hook on tail, I guess it tried to attack the bait)!!!
In case of low light condition, especially at night or before dawn, should I a little slow down retrieving to let fish detect bait's location??
