    I’m really glad Matt included muddy/silty bottoms. It seems like everyone else that talks jigs just assumes that their audience is fishing areas that are either pure rock/gravel, wood cover or some form of vegetation and the truth is that a lot of us, especially those of us who fish slow moving rivers or ponds deal with mud and silt as much as anything else. Older reservoirs also tend to silt in over time.

      Yeah, I hear ya. I spend a lot of time with a jig. I seem to accidentally caught 5 or 6, but like they say, those have been good ones. So - just like learning worms, I just keep on akeeping on. Good luck to ya - and me, too.

      When in doubt, fish slower. It's a pain cause you get the "itch" to bounce it. But again, fish slower and you should be able to get something on.

      What people said is indeed true. Also, consider this, vary your retrieve speeds an pauses. Also yoyo jig in 3 segments. Start with rod tip alittle above 9 o'clock then slightly raise rod tip pause 2 seconds then raise rod tip slightly higher pause 2 seconds an then a 3rd time raise rod tip a 3rd time to 10 o'clock position. This 3 parts rod tip raises works great because it imitates a creyfish swimming.

    Hard to beat a jig. I really like the arkie style jigs but my favorite is some sort of pitching jig with a head that comes through grass good. The strike king Denny brauer premier pro is a great cheap one. Even has a rattle built in. Hook a chunk on the back and get to slinging it into cover.

    I went down this rabbit hole with Matt several years ago after another great siminar.
    I couldn’t catch a cold on a jig!
    Decided to put in the time and effort and alot of extra time on the water. Huge reward for the effort. I pretty much fish a jig all year in any condition now with confidence. My boat is filled with just a few brands and colors from 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz.
    My favorite jig rods are an NRX 894, NRX 873, and an NRX 893. Braid to Floro is a must for great hook sets.
    You can see how deep that rabbit hole can go! Thanks Matt for these great videos! You are making better anglers one at a time.

    I didn't start throwing a jig until about 3 years ago. I fish river smallmouth and localitus always told me they don't work. The bass patrol jigs were the ones that really spoke to me and they turned out to be incredibly effective during the pre spawn. Like you said, they don't have a ton of colors but they have the right colors and you can do a lot with the trailer. Isolated lay downs and sand/mud to rock transitions are just lights out with those things and you'll find quality like you've never seen before if you're just throwing a keitech or ned rig.

    • @connorhany351
      @connorhany351 3 роки тому

      I've found that localitus is purely irellevant. Fish don't just pick one bait that they are going to eat one day. A bluegill comes by, they're not going to pass on it just because they're "only" eating crawfish. I only ever fish my confidence baits, rarely ever using baits that people claim are working.

    Hey Matt and Tim. I'm fishing in the deep south. Savannah GA to be specific. Our grass does not completely die off. Will the bass still go to hard structure or will they split between what is left of the grass and hard structure?

    Man, I wish I could get you on my little 500 acre home lake. It’s got a ton of grass that’s dying and not a lot of hard cover. But it has 2 dams. The one where the water comes in is less than 10 feet and gets shallow quickly on each side. The dam where the water goes out is over 20 feet and has around 100 yards of rock on each side and the grass doesn’t start till out by the ends of the rock.my problem is I fish from shore. I do well in spring and summer. But I’m struggling this fall. Bait is everywhere but it’s just tough. Do you think the deep dam would be good for my jigs? I’m in Michigan and there’s a lot of pike too. Aaaaaahhhhh🤪

    Hey guys, love the channel! I had a question about the jig. I just really started fishing it for the past year, and I have had a little success. But my question is, would it be better to start out with a little lighter weight, like a 1/4 to 3/8 oz., or just depends really on water situation you're fishing it in? Rather than the 1/2oz. or heavier? Thanks guys for all the great information, Happy Thanksgiving!

      It really depends on the situation. In general, 1/2 oz gives you great bottom contact so you know exactly what you're fishing through. Obviously if you're fishing shallower water a 3/8 is a better option but from say, 12-40 feet of water, 1/2 is our staple.

    I pitch half ounce jigs from a kayak in and around grass edges. Don't really want the length of the brailist. Would the Loomis 844c mbr do the job or too soft?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  3 роки тому

      I would say that's too soft. What about the Megabass Perfect Pitch?

      @@tacticalbassin I actually own orochi xx perfect pitch. . I'm still learning and really appreciate how much your videos are helping me. Was actually using that as my frog rod mainly. Is there a g Loomis alternative you would suggest? Thank you guys for all you do.

      It almost sounds like a rod issue. Are you fishing braid to leader? That will instantly increase your sensitivity by a ton.

    "They will typically follow that pressure and swim out from underneath that dock...." - that's an under statement. I hooked into a huge smallie at Pickwick about 2 weeks ago and she took me underneath a floating dock that I was standing on when I hooked her- there was two poles spaced about 6 inches apart and she went right between them- so I'm standing on the dock holding steady pressure on her and all the sudden she comes shooting out from between those poles- I had her on a spinning rig so I couldn't catch up- by the time I got all that slack out she wasn't on anymore.
    Just broke my heart man- we had been fishing all day and the boat had torn up, we couldn't get it started- so we got towed to a dock downstream. My bother had caught a ride with some nice guy who offered to help us out to go get his truck- so I stayed behind and fished off the dock while he was gone. Caught 3 smallies but this was the only one of any size- and she was massive- a 4-5 pounder I think. I tossed my underspin in between the dock and the bank on a whim- there wasn't 3 feet of water there- but that's where she was.
