  • With two team members trapped in icy, snowy roads states away from the shelter, the remaining Horse Shelter Heroes had to plan for the auction rescue and intake without them. The auction was a huge success with 19 precious lives being rescued from the slaughter pipeline!
A rescued horse purchased in the parking lot had the worst broken leg you have ever seen. The old injury was just heartbreaking to see, and the x-rays were worse.

By euthanizing the horses, you’re allowing them to know kindness and a loving hand, rather than going down in slaughter truck to be trampled. Thank you for not hesitating to put them down.

@Karen Bailey yeah I think people see it as you rescue them just to kill them. Rather then this poor animal was suffering and would have suffered more still. It’s kinder to say goodbye then ignore a animal because you know you can’t do much else for him/her. They do an amazing job at least most of us appreciate that 💗

I bought a 5yo half-broken starved buckskin filly who was going to go to slaughter the next day. She came off the float head shy, starving, beaten and terrified and nearly 4 months later and I can put her halter on in her paddock and ride her up to the gate bareback with no issues. She has so much potential and after a little farrier care she is completely sound and the sweetest thing ever. The work you guys are doing is incredible and as I told my dad when he was trying to talk me out of it "it doesn't change the world. but it changes the world for the horse" which is so incredibly true. Thank you for doing what you do.

anyone who wants to keep alive a suffering animal is the true abuser. You make such a good point; so many rescues will only take the potentially adoptable horses! Although ANY sort of rescue is admirable, you guys are extremely special in the fact that you take many non-adoptable horses from slaughter, even if it is just to give them a warm place with love for only a day. Probably the best day of their life. Massive amount of respect ♥️

So true. I'm honestly baffled by the number of random people commenters have argued with because this person INSISTED that Horse Plus was basically bad for euthenizing unfixable cases. They claim things like being able to heal insane breaks and hoof problems that not even a magician could fix.
It's just sad how woefully uneducated people are, yet they feel they're qualified to make these kinds of claims.
I honestly kind of wish the US forced people to take a horse care coarse to get horses. They require such important care and even the smallest issue with certain things could ruin them....

Damn, that mustang was one tough old guy to have actually survived long enough to "heal" that leg. But he is happy you did the last good thing anyone could do for him. Not sure what's worse, coward owners that can't do right by their horses and have the guts to be there to say goodbye when they send them to the Sky Pasture, instead putting them through the stress and pain of actually traveling in such condition, or the ones who just don't care about tossing a horse away.
I haven't read all the comments, but have seen nothing but positive and support for the soul-wrenching service you provide these horses. Yours is yet another place I would gladly support if I could.

@@lottiedotty8262 I also wondered at first if he could have lived on at the rescue, but I thought a lot about it before commenting, and even though he was managing to get around on that leg, we aren't living in his body and have no idea how humidity or extreme cold weather etc. would pain him. I am in near constant pain in various joints so am always wondering how arthritic or otherwise compromised animals are feeling when it's humid or frigid. We may have been seeing him on a not-so-bad day. And we all know how prey animals, and probably mustangs especially, try to hide any weakness or vulnerability. I did feel bad that he'd made it that far only to be put down, but it probably wouldn't have been long before he started to go downhill just due to his age. And these people do have limited resources. They gave him his dignity and a peaceful end.

As for those who would bash the job you guys do, I want to see them in the auctions with you, seeing what you see, and why you do what you do, and then have them look you in the eyes and still bash you. Cowards let these animals end up with this cruel life. Bashers, in my opinion, are just as cowardly.

They should be charged with this. We should be able to go back with all the paperwork at auctions and find these trouble people and charge them with abuse. May the lord bless Horse Plus for all they do

It's really easy/easier for some people to sit in their comfy chairs at home and criticize you people then to get up and help do something about the abuse in the first place and/or be part of an organization like this to rescue save and rehome the ones that can be!! Or at least donate money or supplies! Your nasty mean spirited words Only show what kind of person you really are or maybe makes you feel better about your lousy uncompassionate self!!!
This group of wonderful people are action not just talk and they put their own selves on the line not only to do the necessary work to get them adopted but also take the responsibility to make the heartwrenching tough calls to do the right thing to stop the horrific pain of those that cannot be helped. And in the meantime give the care and show them love!
You people are true horse lovers with endless love kindness and care. Thank you so very much for all you do but for the humankind you are.

how wonderful for the 19 you rescued. I, too, look forward to the videos and updates. It makes me feel like I am a part of it. I watch, cry, laugh and dream on what will happen and then diligently watch for any new news. I know auction day is very hard on you guys but I love it--I know that more horses will be helped so I can't wait for each one. The worst for me tonight was finding out the one with the old broken leg was to be put down.........I knew it would have to be but hoped differently. IF it could have been managed to be somewhat fixed to relieve pain and be saved, I was determined to get it here as a buddy to my old retired girl. I soooo wanted her. Please keep up what you are doing (I know you will) and I know there is a very special place in Heaven for all of you all. I humbly thank you.

The ones who can’t be saved, thank you for giving them some time surrounded by good people and letting them go peacefully. It’s unthinkable what the unlucky ones go through on the way to slaughter and how they are killed. It’s horrendous cruelty and totally preventable. Watching from Tasmania 💞
