- Why has this pony been angry for 16 years??!! 16 year old pony has hated people from 6 months old! Steve discovers the major reason for his behaviour + does his best to change his behaviour for the future steve-young-horsemanship.mysh...
I don't even live near a horse and here I sit here listening and studying everything. as if I'm going on out and work with my own. 🤣

I have to say, I'm asking myself that very same question. Still, I love to watch Steve teach another horse.
"it's all about moving their feet"... Traditionally this is not something that is even entertained, we are all taught the same old fashioned way -which is to be honest human arrogamcy. Dominate the horse, not speak the horse's language.
I'm so glad there's a huge shift globally in how we approach horses, at least people are trying other methods.
For the past few years I've not had my own horse, I ride at a school. So I'm not able to consistently apply this method, but for the few minutes each week that I do it makes a difference to the horse I ride. She likes to invade human space, but I show her that it's not okay with me. And she's cool with that. The problem is I have to start fresh every week because the rest of the time no-one focuses on her invasion of space issue.

This is the classic pony (Therwell) pony misgiving; that has been portrayed as acceptable, just like the behaviours of the small dog. But ultimately very dangerous considering the natural pairing with a child. It’s so refreshing and it’s truly amazing to see the difference. Well done! This should be part of every riding lesson! 😉
When you have the crowd applaud I can't help but wonder if at the end the horse is thinking 'Wow, he has them all trained!'. Loved the video, thanks for all you do!

Horses, German Shepherds...I have been blessed with 7 of each over decades. Your philosphy of Leadership and Respect is outstanding. Only one GS was from puppy stage, 6 have a lot of work put into them. Horses mishandled, misread to personality, some abuse have all taught me to be flexible and learn diferent ways of reaching out. Still learning, almost 70 , still riding, teaching, yes being hurt, Cowgirling up and moving on. Only thing I would change would be the knowledge I have now 50 years ago. You are a tremendous teacher, guide, leader. Never stop learning, giving, making mistakes and keep going. Thank you!
I'm so taken by the gentleness with which he handles each individual horse. After the release, the lightest and most fleeting touch on the horse's nose or forehead is just about all they need to know they're behaving as expected. I like how he doesn't treat the horse as a human. He communicates with them as would a lead horse in a pack. Clearly this is a behavior they understand. I don't want to call it magic but it is startling how quickly he makes progress with a problem horse. Keep up the good work, Steve.
Horses are like kids, they crave boundaries. Boundaries make them feel safe.

Lost for 16 years. Found in 30 minutes. Actually, 10 minutes.
He has a strong reaction to pressure on his halter, that's when he rears. I'd say he's never been properly taught to come forward off pressure. If horse's are tied solid when they don't understand to come forward off pressure, they instinctually pull backwards and/or rear, and that's how he's escaped the pressure in the past. In other words, he's been inadvertently taught to rear and drag people to try and escape halter pressure, by humans not understanding how to teach him how to respond properly.
Beautiful job Steve! You've started that sweet little pony on a better rest of his life. I can see what a difference your training makes for the owners as well with its simplicity. How true...What a gift He gave us with the horse. I so admire people that understand what they need, like becoming their a leader. And to do that with kindness, patience and hands on TLC, while being firm with what you DON'T want. And to watch them become fine with it, always amazes me. Kindness matters.😊💕🌻
This is great, a reminder not to forget the other eye, many of us were never taught this years ago and I’m not altogether sure that many instructors are teaching it now! 👍

Good video of a bossy pony. I never really thought about horses being 1 eyed more than another because I always messed with both sides shoeing them and grooming and just sitting with them while they ate. I am horseless now my 25 yr old saddle horse died unexpectedly, so that is something I will have to think about when buying a new horse. That in itself will feel weird as I've had horses all my life and went with the motto of have a pair and a spare. But we all got old and they passed away. Sad for me. Keep up the good work Steve looking forward to your two colts training.

i love how confident you are and how that allows the horse trust in you. and I've noticed no matter the horse they respond to you because of your body language it's even more accentuated when i see how others put fear into the animals with their body language when they themselves are leery and afraid. This lil one he was just looking for some support and wasn't getting it. Thanks for helping the people and the pony :) Awesome. ♥

I get so much out of your videos. I grew up riding, but our job (my twin sister and I) was to stay ON the backs of the thoroughbreds (our aged teacher bought young horses off the track to train for hunter jumpers- they'd never been in the woods, or had leaves under their hooves, or seen squirrels or birds etc.). We learned much from him, but not any specific method of training.
What a beautiful pony, so much learned in one session, I feel the pressure is off and this pony will enjoy his life much more than before, and the relief factor is HUGE. I am comforted to know this will be a new beginning for the pony and owner, and a much more happy and fulfilling partnership :).

what isn't visible is the biggest asset... steve is on the same communication bandwidth as the horse. they are, by frequency, consciously connecting/communicating. the horses love that direct/clear/real exchange. i think a large part of the horses' anger is that they've been hurt and alone and stewing in that. no one can access the communication channel and really connect with them.. so they are alone and angry for a long time. seemingly forever. then here comes steve's consciousness walking right into their channel speaking consciousness to consciousness, heart to heart -- thereby totally changing their world. so beautiful. people need to be trained to access the unspoken field of communication. that's what nature understand/responds to.
This horse seems extremely smart and fast learning, yet still alert. She also is able to settle down quickly from a spook. I really like this horse. Once Steve got in there, it was super fast, she just needed some direction.
I totally agree communication is key and it's not about words l think that's why l love working with horses so much

Another valuable lesson! I hate to admit, I used to think it looked awfully untidy leading a horse from the front (as my American instructor did) preferring to lead from the shoulder in the (proper!!) English manner! You live 'n' learn, don't you? .🐾😉🐴 G'd on ya Steve, Tanya & Charlotte.

I went to a local stable a bunch of years back & told the instructor I wanted to learn the 'language' of horse better, specifically for groundwork. She was mystified! I didn't want riding lessons? No. I wanted to learn how to better communicate on the ground & how to develop a working relationship. I'd had lessons as a kid, but never felt I could communicate effectively. She still didn't understand what I'd come to her for. Pity your videos weren't available then, Steve! I feel I could've learned so much of what I needed back then! Oh well, you can always teach new tricks to an old dog, with the right kind of teacher/teaching. 😊
Brilliant as always Steve. I always learn something from every video that you put out. Yes, it's the same ground work but each horse is different in how they handle the ground work being taught, which you have consistently shown us it's the basis and building blocks of teaching a horse ... the expectations of their behaviours ... when interacting with humans. It's the same lingo as when they're in a wild herd, as you have said countless of times.
I also see the same techniques being used when I watch other channels now about horsemanship. And if similar techniques are not applied, the handler always seems to have problems that aren't resolved in the same manner or quite as easily, comparatively.
Actually, truth be known, I have be known to drop a suggestion to some, in their comments, to watch your channel. One person did respond back saying they have their own way of doing things ... that's pride loud and clear! Your methods seem to be full proof and work with any type of horse, no matter how difficult or out of control that horse has become. I'm not saying it's Steve Young's method, as you learned these techniques from others as well ... like Buck, etc. It's just good horsemanship that has been handed down through the generations. I think if it's made to be complicated, at these levels, it's just someone trying to build up of their self importance. You're all about the horse and safety for all.

I LOVE how you're able to identify that the pony had a "bad side" and a "good side." I think so often we forget about this, as horse people, and it's so important to get the horse ok with both sides. I'm going to try some of these exercises with my nervous TWH. Thank you! :)
The difficult part for me would be keeping my temper. I am so impressed that Steve is so detached from the emotions of the horse. It seems to allow the horse to have faith in him. It allows Steve to be so kind and fair for the horse.
There is a boatload of other things I would have trouble with also.

Wow. Always impressed by the immediate understanding from the horse or Pony to recognize you're speaking their language. It's so evident. It's literally a lesson in itself. The equine language. If we take the time to learn it, and it doesn't take long mind you... they are immediately responsive. Just speak the language, understand their brains. Step 1..

As you say over and over, it’s simple and easy but it’s not simple easy at the same time to do what you do.
The self awareness one has to have on a physical, mental and emotional level is already a lot to handle. Then understanding the body language of a horse, of each horse, and their thought process is another lot of awareness to acquire.
Lead to drive, move their feet, watch out for them as you work with them so they can relax and not have to be in charge… seems simple, but wow, so much goes into all this. I feel like such a beginner.
When I finally move to Germany my neighbor will guide me on all this and I will help muck out the barn, fill the water and groom them in exchange. I can only hope to come to a hundredth of the capacity and awareness of you, Steve!

I remember you mentioning in another episode about a mustang named Cheyenne. Did her owner happened to be Dennis Daly? A horsemanship guy from Norway named Peer Werner Vogel was hired to tame her when she was at the two cheek ranch in the USA. Dennis was so impressed about his skills that he chose to give cheyenne to Peer, witch later took her with him back to Norway.

Steve, your videos are just so helpful to me! You explain things in, as you said, as simple manner, and it puts a lot of little pieces of horse knowledge I have into a coherent whole. I'm a western rider, and I think we just hear more of that type of training over here (I live in Montana). But the way you teach us in your videos enables me to apply your techniques every day, and it makes for better and happier horses. Thank you so very much!

Beautiful pony! I have watched many of the same trainers as Steve in my training career. What sets Steve a cut above the rest is his calm and compassionate manner with horses and people. The horse owner may have very little money or be very wealthy, but he treats the people the same. Very rare and appreciated in the horse business. Rock on Steve!

Well, I believe I'm in love/admiration with you, Steve... but let me explain: your training and equine insight continue to reveal so much not only about your incredible horse knowledge, but also about your cute personality. Alongside glimpses into your lovely family members, seeing your bikes and boat leaves me wanting a bit more of your private life fun time stuff! Through the wonders of the internet, there's no need for us to access the reality of the "actual" Steve, so it's easy to love a person that never farts, burps, or gets cranky in your presence LOL! So maybe it's time for even more non-equine fun tidbits, possibly at the end of the horsey classes, or through a link to "What Steve and Co did on Their Day Off" that separates those just here for the horses from those who also want more of a peek into your daily life. For example, I was glued to the post when your parrot escaped!
Love your videos Steve. I don't own a horse, never have unfortunately and now too old and disabled. However, I used to ride when I was younger, so have always loved horses. I follow Friesian Horses in Friesland (my favourite breed). You are brilliant at turning the lives of horses and owners around. I learn such a lot. By the way Tanya, tell him the flying jacket is for best. He is not to wear it in bed or out working. LOL🥰

Wonderful thank you this is really helping with our horses. Have you ever considered doing video critiques where we could send you clips of what we are trying to work on and you tell us what you see as needing improving or if it’s good what we can advance to? We here in the U.S can’t get to you I would love to do that and willin* to pay of course maybe like a club fee and then once a month we could ge5 a critique just a thought.

Perhaps if Alex Murdaugh’s patents had administered this kind of firm but kind social training early in his own life, he wouldn’t have turned into the self-absorbed, unhappy, murderous person he is today.

Hello from Nova Scotia Canada, I am fairly new to your channel but I have been binge watching all your videos. I hate to admit it but I am severely afraid of horses. They are beautiful to be seen but I can not see myself ever touching or owning one. The main point of my post is I throughly enough watching your skill with them. It's like you have a connection of some sort. My dream trip would to get to your country some day . Anyways a huge thank you for making these videos for even someone like me who admires and respects them but never would own them. Cheers

Thanks again Steve for your awesome techniques of training! You are so patient and yet firm...such gems in training! When I lived in Germany I loved going to Spain! The temperature was a lovely change. Plus where I went I got to go visit a favorite horse riding establishment! I got to do all my favorite things...sun bathe, shop and ride horses. The stable let me ride their personal horses because of my level of experience! Was ran by a German actually. You got so much for a decent price. Of course this was many years ago.
