I Finally got my first try with my new lead-core pole
I got 3 colors with 100 feet of 15pnd floral topshot
I’ve probably watched all your trout trolling videos at least twice
And I either don’t remember watching this one or I hadn’t watched it
I realized now that I definitely need to shorten my topshot line in half at least
I got skunk at Comanche Lake yesterday got a very late start and was only out for 4 hours
I can’t wait to get out there again
Thanks for everything U do for us beginners

I've been wanting to buy some of those trolling rudders for a while now, hopefully you'll get more soon.

I’ve been testing side planners with modified lead core rig and having some success. Any advice or knowledge you have on that subject?

Always thought that the longer topshot leader was to get the lure back to the correct distance behind the boat. Is the thought for going shorter also advocating a shorter distance from the boat?

I think if you are fishing in the top 25 feet of water you may need extra topshot. But when I’m 30-40 feet deep I agree with Cal, I can use a 3-4 foot leader and it works just fine

I plan to try lead core this year for trolling for rainbow trout. What knot do you recommend for joining the top shot?
Do I have to remove some of the lead inner core and just tie the sheath to the Florocarbon?
What pound test do you recommend for Norcal planted rainbow trout?

We use double uni knots to tie two different types of line together. Yes, you will need to remove a few inches of lead from the sheath before tying to the top shot. We use 18# leadcore, 20# top shot and 8-10# leader.

I have a question about line depth. With other types of fishing lines you have to use smaller line if you want your lure to go down a little deeper. I'm guessing it's because a smaller line diameter creates less drag / resistance in the water and is able to cut through the water easier. Does this principle also apply to leadcore? Just curious because with lead it seems like the bigger the diameter, the heavier it would be and that extra line weight might counteract the resistance causing it to sink more??? What my question boils down to is that if you're rigging up two different rods one with 15 lb leadcore and the other with 18 lb leadcore, which one would you choose to be your shallow rig (more top shot) and which one for fishing a little deeper? (less top shot) Thanks!

The rating on leadcore line is for the strength of the sheath, not the density (weight) of the lead inside the sheath. There is a slight increase in the diameter of the line with a higher strength rating, so it will have slightly more drag in the water. You can try using the micro lead, which is slightly lighter lead and much thinner sheath. It cuts thru the water better and allows you to get 5 or 6 colors on a standard reel. The trade off is setback. With 6 colors out, you are 200'+ back to get down to 25-30'.
Your idea about different top shot lengths is dead on. We use a "shallow" hybrid setup with a longer top shot for running 1-2 colors back and a "deeper" hybrid setup with a short top shot for trolling 3 colors + backing. This keeps the setbacks manageable on smaller lakes that have more boat traffic.
We have found that the sweet spot is to run 3 colors of 18# lead line with a 25" top shot. This puts the setback around 170' to get max depth of 25' with 50' of backing, 3 colors of lead, top shot, and leader out. With one color, it is still 60' back, which is about as short as you want to go.

@@FHSTackle Thanks for taking the time to write a detailed response. So should I make the 18# setup shallow and my 15# setup deep or vice versa?

The 15# will cut thru the water slightly better. Use that for the deep.
