Lyrics:
Well, I'm standing next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand
Well, I'm standing next to a mountain, chop it down with the edge of my hand
Pick up all the pieces, make an island, might even raise a little sand
'Cause I'm a voodoo chile, Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile
I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time
Give it right back to you one of these days
I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time
Give it right back to you the rest of my days
I won't see you again in this world, see you in the next one
Don't be late, don't be late
'Cause I'm a voodoo chile yeah, Lord knows I'm a voodoo chile

Eric Clapton performed with SRV in his last concert. Here's what he had to say about it. "The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. When he played that night, he had all of us standing mere with our jaws dropped. I mean, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy were just watching in awe. There was no one better than him on this planet. Really unbelievable."

@@Followerofthekingofkings1969 Your not wrong there.
Eric is 77 now I believe........the old GOAT not, still good though😊but SRV will always be the best there ever was or ever will be.
Back in the early '80s, I was creating a glass art project in a bar on 6th street. A fellow walked in and asked to speak to the manager so we pointed towards the backroom. The manager came out and the fellow asked if he could come in with his troop and jam on a weekend night. The manager asked him what he played and the fellow asked if he could show him.
After a twenty/thirty minute set up, the fellow opened up with 'look at little sister' followed by voodoo child and my jaw dropped open.
The fellow introduced himself as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble.
The manager wanted him to start that very night and after that, it was standing room only...all the way outside of the bar.
This was before he cut his first album, and I had the honor of being able to hear what he could do before he proved it to the world.
Amazeballs
Fy fan
Wow ! what a story, Fancy that, SRV in off the street, doing a free jam session with his band.
Yes I see it scairt me in to pubic growth and public office
@Robert Smith, that’s one helluva chance encounter. I saw him at the Rome Inn before he was unleashed onto the world. I’ve always felt like I’m in a special club, lol.
When a guitarist walks on stage with a beat up battered and scratched guitar with his initials on it. You know he,s the real deal

I love his voice. Nobody talks about that. A very soulful voice.
That's really true. A blues voice for sure.
Awesome pipes but I prefer Jimi's voice on this particular song
Or much about Double Trouble. 2 guys had to hold the back side together while Stevie shined.
I agree, but there is a bit of a distraction from singing..
Well put. Both he and Hendrix were notoriously shy about their vocal talent. Undeserved, IMO. Both had beautiful voices perfectly suited to the music at hand.
It's incomprehensible how good this performance is.
Try this also... > ua-cam.com/video/mIR3iBwB66Q/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/pe3G7p1Z-xU/v-deo.html
He should have delegated the vocals to a competent singer and stuck with guitar - management in America was always an achilles.
@@cahillgreg I respectfully disagree, in my opinion Stevie's vocals here is giving a certain vibe to the song, unique and different. I even enjoy the inaudible and arguably mistaken* parts, I think this is actually what lies in the core of live music.
@@cahillgreg Absolutely have to respectfully disagree also. I saw him multiple times, the first being in 1984, it was a jaw dropping performance. In addition to pouring the energy out through that guitar like he did, the vocals conveyed that energy also. Almost 40 years later, his live performances, energy delivery and stage presence remain a very high bar to reach for. In my very humble opinion, his voice was a compliment to how he played. As enjoyable as these video clips are, they simply can not do justice to the raw energy pouring out of that man on stage during a performance like this.
Covering Hendrix takes some balls to begin with. Stevie grabs the tune by the horns and transmutes it through his Texas blues soul and spits out a flaming brew that Jimi would have given a standing ovation. He owns the damn thing, while still paying tribute to the Master, JH. Deep bow.
Beautifully said.
So true, he had the reverence and the guts to play this song and OWN it.
Well said sir
He has all of Jimi's raw emotion and soul, but never, ever gets a note wrong. He is simply in a class by himself. What a legend and sorely missed.
.....e
A tip of the hat to all the creativity and passion Hendricks unleashed, executed with precision!
He took Jimi's vision and raw emotion and refined it into the purest gold. It can be improved upon no more...
@@carlwilliams6977 Exactly how I see it. He took Jimis visions for these tunes and brought them to their ultimate forms. Jimi would be proud. They cant get any better.
@@carlwilliams6977 there is no tip, he showed what Jimi was trying to express and than amplified to next level!
There are really no words to describe SRV. He's at the spiritual level.. unbelievable!
Music stars channel the supernatural. It appears that Demons are running out of good music. I do like some of SCORPIONS new songs, Unleash The Beast (about Megalodons), Peace Maker, When Tomorrow Comes, Shoot For Your Heart, Shining Of Your Soul, Out Go The Lights, Gas In The Tank & Rock Believer are the best they have done since their album Unbreakable.
SRV played the guitar like it owed him money
Damn, i laughed so hard reading this
No Life Shaq wants his line back
SRV called Stevie everything but white. That performance was glorious !
Lenny liked it rough ;)
So fucking unfair he had to go in a plane crash.
Technically insane lick after lick , guy was absolutely relentless in his execution, nonstop shredding and just ridiculous chops. What an absolutely incredible player. Wish he was still around, a shame.
Yes he's really and truly missed. I cannot believe this mans talent WOW!!!!
Hendrix may have changed the way people played, but other guys took it up another stage. But Hendrix, Clapton etc likewise copied Albert & BB King, its a simple progression in life. Personally I think this SRV is far superior to JH also Gary Moore another fabulous player. I've never liked watching the showmanship that JH did, it's irritating. It's all a matter of taste I can't stand Jeff Beck and Rory Gallagher, Page is OK but doesn't set me on fire or Hallen Vai and Satriani. Again just a matter of opinion. Jack, Gary Moore's son is a great player, love Clapton , Walter Trout. So many different guys out there to suit different tastes.
With 13/ 56 strings.....
I have watched/listened to countless hours of Stevie Ray live, and I cannot recall ONE instance where he obviously made a mistake. He MAY have made some in those performances but they were never obvious... and I'm a guitarist! His execution is one thing I think a lot of people overlook. He was ALWAYS spot-on!
Well said!
He is like a prize fighter, he just keeps hitting you under you give in. No one on earth ever played a guitar like him.
Hendrix is the true Guitar God. Just another copy of Hendrix.
@@lainaniedbalski2558 ~ Hendrix was great for sure, but more for his writing. His play was sloppy.
I was at his grave last summer 2022 in Laureland Cemetery. Just a white rose laying on the bronze cover. His mom and dad just behind his grave. No one araound. Just a breeze blowing in the trees. Brought a tear to my eye. SRV was the best blues artist there ever was.
I would have killed to see that. :)

Hail to both of these geniuses!. Hendrix played like an alien from another planet grabbing elemental chaos and vibration out of the ethers and channeling something unprecedented and mystical with every ounce of his being. But Stevie feels like he is so damn sharp and utterly grounded on our Beloved Earth. Stevie taps into that same cosmic life force that Jimi birthed into this realm, but with the clarity of a zen master. This is an astounding performance, a true Jedi playing tribute to a true Prophet.
Damn. Well said.
That's poetry
Very well said.
Totally agree.
Your comment is a piece of art .
His ability to emote simultaneously via the guitar and thru his vocals which are superb are truly what makes him the best blues musician ever. Clips like these give me even more appreciation to such a talented and truthful soul. There was never any quit in this performance.
He just might be the best there ever was.

The Second Coming of the Blues....
STASS LIFE ordinary voice though

I agree greetings from the netherlands
The folks watching this had no idea they witnessed history...
Makes me want to get out of the house more.
They act like they're at the murder mystery dinner theater. Ugh...
I was looking at the audience and thinking...
" My God, do they understand what they are witnessing?"
I'd of paid a weeks wages to sit 30 feet from that stage...
So happy to have seen him live. Crap concert. He was so loaded. With a friend who liked to hang back. 10 people still there. He came back out. Sat cross legged on the stage and played for 2 hrs. Heavenly!!!!!!
Mary Jander Nah they realized they were witnessing the second coming of Christ and were all bowing in respective silence.
For me, to this date, his live performances remain unmatched. Words can not convey the energy he projected while on stage, it just poured out of him. Very grateful to have seen him in small places in the Texas Flood days.
I saw him live at a spectacular venue in Victoria Australia, unforgettable, you forget that there's only three people on stage.
Couldn't agree more with you. His live shows were incredible to witness.
I've been playing for well over 20yrs. I've never seen anyone attack the guitar like SRV. He's plays with such force, it's borderline violence, but there's an elegance to it at the same time. It's elegant violence fueled by soulful passion and it's never been replicated, nor will it ever. Not in my lifetime anyway.
BEST performance of Voodoo Child, in my opinion.
El Mocambo is pretty close to this
Agree 200%
Totally agree
I hate that I agree with this
John mayers version is on point also.Incredible
A guitar can't sound better than this.
That is basically the very pinnacle of electric guitar playing that has ever been or ever will be. The literal high water mark.
IMHO, the only one capable to play it better than Jimmy himself.
Jimi
Only guitarist who could play Hendrix convincingly..and that's saying a lot!
no hate on stevie but i think gary moore did a great job aswell :)
Srv and Gary Moore both better.
I agree, only SRV could play Jimi.
I disagree. SRV does not do Hendrix. Maybe Albert King.
It might be a little controversial but what about John Frusciante?
Vaughn is the absolute king of the "in-between-the-note" bends.
That's why I play bass
Vaughan! But yes, I agree🖤💙💔
Even when he snaps a string, he just bends everything to still be in tune until him and his tech, Rene, pull the smoothest guitar switch in live music history.
@@craenor Amazeballs indeed, praise indeed
anybody who believes jimi is the greatest guitar player to ever live, is wrong. Hendrix may have innovated guitar playing like nobody before, but Stevie perfected it.

What an incredible talent!! Best cover version of Voodoo Chile ever. Others have tried but SRV nails it.
Randy Hansen modernises it right back to jimis version at Woodstock. Bypasses SRV.... Randy's version ain't as good as the Woodstock one... Hendrix did many definitive versions visions

Had the precious moment of seeing him in Pittsburgh with Jeffery Beck. I will never forget it
For those who play guitar know how difficult is to tune into that place where your feeling flows to your fingers, whithout thinking of boxes and scales and what am I gonna play now so I dont repeat myself, and do all this surfing the band rhythum, the song pace and story, the right notes at the right moment played with the right feeling .....your feeling....leaving the audience with dropped jaw. Believe me, this is another level, you feel he is not thinking about the neck, his fingers know where the notes are, they only translate his feeling. Stevie did this so so easily that we know we are in the presence of greatness. After 30 years, I hear this and still shake my head like .....how is this possible?....to play like this.....
thousands of hours of practice and determination mixed with a higher understanding of mind, soul and body. also a little bit of genetics help because his brother is a great guitarist as well
SRV was too incredible, so hard to accept he is gone now over 30 yrs.
There will never be another sound like SRV. His riffs, solos and tone are one of a kind.
@@chrisking6695 you’re such an idiot. SRV was a genius blues player that DID write so much of his own music. And do you really think that people who praise SRV don’t like Hendrix and only do it because he’s white? You are a moron. Every musician is inspired from someone else in some way. If you played me an SRV song, I would instantly recognize it because SRV didn’t copy anybody, he took different things from other players and made it his own, like any musician does. You don’t need to reinvent anything to be an excellent player, you can be just really really good at what you do. Hendrix said he wasn’t the best player and yet everybody considers him as the greatest of all time.
@@chrisking6695 wow bro, you're so smart, and know everything about the kind of skill it takes to replicate Hendrix and his style. I bet you can even play it yourself!
SRV career was cut short. He was and IS by far the best guitarist of all time. It was a mere appendage of his body. Like a an arm or leg...his guitar spoke emotions and feelings that he could not put into words. He could close his eyes and the rhythm of life pours out from every strum of his hand. He just wanted to play and share himself. We miss you Stevie You are a son of Zeus. You are a demi god of the guitar. You will live beyond the decades of this generation. Thank you
the best guitarist who has ever walked on this planet imo, and his legendary guitar, the most beautiful thing I've ever seen ❤️🤘🏻🔥
There will never ever be anybody that plays like that, EVER
Well technically there are many people who can play but there's no such melody and feels in playing like it is when Hendrix and srv played
upon further watching this for the now 1000th time the one thing nobody ever mentions is when he first comes in and starts out with the riff, the power he comes in with is INCREDIBLE!,its as if every single amp he had on that stage was turned up to the max gain and the entirety of texas could hear it,the absolute incredible strength behind every single little riff and into chorus is powerful.
If you like this you need to check out Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s band live version of this tune on UA-cam. He obviously is no SRV but it’s a very good rendition 👍

There are so many great guitarists in the world, but I wonder, in my lifetime, if I will ever experience anyone as soulful, nasty, tasty, precise, articulate, and intricate as Stevie. What a fucking gift to the music listening public. In his after-life, I hope Stevie is rocking the house down, forcing the angels to cover their ears to what us mortals were able to enjoy for brief but spectacular time here on earth. Mighty God rest his soul.
You will not😢

nasty, precise... Check out Pat O'Brien.
How the hell could God have taken Stevie Ray Vaughan away from us I still don't unerstand..I guess God needed him more. RIP Stevie!
For 32 years we have missed this genius, he will NEVER be bettered, ever🖤💙💔
One of the things that I believe sets Stevie apart and makes him the greatest guitar player (in my opinion) is that you’re not hearing just guitar, it’s literally heart and soul of Stevie expressed through his guitar playing.
Other people can play the guitar, but Stevie’s soul sang through it. I don’t think he ever played a dull note. If he did it was intentional and it still sounded good.
Also the fact he barely looks at big guitar while he shreds.. incredible.
Check out Gary Moore
When you can shred better than 95% of pros while literally playing behind your back, you don't need to look at the guitar.
@@craenor yes for sure

They had to. Why did you think Stevie Ray chose them?
It seems so unscripted, yet dynamic. At 3:10 Chris and Tommy instinctively know where Stevie is going and they adjust accordingly. Layton is almost playing the guitar strums with the drums.
I so agree! I wish Double Trouble would get more accolades. The talent in that band, along with Reese Wynans at keyboards were incredible! Stevie had a great ear for music & talent.
They were the best

Yes, this will never be matched!!
epic.
I've said many times that this is one of my favorite moments. When he drops all distortion, hits the reverb -- and then comes in on this very low, very clean and melodic solo. And you have to hand it to Layton and Shannon, who pick up on his lead and slowly pull back. Then, build on it and come in again heavy at the end. You see Shannon step forward and watch him closely. Right on cue, Layton's head whips around and he looks to see if Stevie is going to start to hit things hard. And they all fall in line with Stevie driving.
