No concerts, no shows, no entertainment in Canada but just outdoor critters. Or you're just becoming an old UA-camr wuss? I think you're becoming an old scared wuss. I have a g85 and the 100-400. Works great so long as there's enough light; I've had no quality issues with it all and have been carrying it everywhere. Also, don't discredit some legacy glass strapped to your g85. I've been using some old Canon FD lenses to play with different focal lengths, manual focus, and faster apertures. The major limiting factor that I don't see folks talking about is the noise and light. The G85 performs well below iso 1,000 but quickly falls apart above that (when it's not bright outside, you can shoot iso 6,400 in full light and it looks fine). So for wildlife, using faster primes (ie an adapted 50mmf1.7) can really help keep the iso down so you retain image quality. There's so much more nature out there in the dawn/dusk hours than when there's good bright light. Lastly, an adapted 70-200f2.8 would likely work really well.
      If you wanna upgrade. Save your money and get that dream camera. Fuji, Sony, Canon, Nikon. I upgraded to Sony and the IQ is on a whole other level. Still using G85+100-400 for wildlife though (until i get that 150-600).

    Lenses that retain focus while zooming are called "parfocal". You mainly find them in cine lenses as well as microscopes, telescopes, and other scientific lenses. Cine lenses are huge, heavy, MF only, and really expensive. Not for regular scrubs like us.

    • @david.stachon
      @david.stachon 2 роки тому +1

      True.
      However, decent lenses that are not specifically "parfocal" can do a respectable job of maintaining focus while zooming.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 2 роки тому

      @@david.stachon also true. But they'll all change at least a little, even L and GM lenses.

    • @izzieb
      @izzieb 2 роки тому

      Several of the Panasonic S Pro L-mount lenses are parfocal or very close to it.
      I don't think it's that it's out of reach for normal scrubs, I think it's that most companies don't see it as a priority in their lens design. Same with focus breathing.
      I guess as Panasonic S series mirrorless cameras have a big focus on video, they felt it necessary to design their lenses to be good for video too.

      I literally came back on Sunday from a week in Scottsdale. I did a lot of birding and landscape photography in the Tonto National Forest and Superstition Mountains. Lots of birds! I saw ravens, Cactus Wrens, Gila Woodpeckers, Gambel's Quails, White-winged Doves, Turkey Vultures, Curve-billed Thrashers, American Kestrels, and one Swainson's Hawk. And those are just the ones I could firmly ID. I'm told there are desert mountain goats in the mountains, and I heard coyotes one morning.
      If desert mountain hikes aren't your thing, try the Desert Botanical Garden. Doves, Gila woodpeckers, Cactus Wrens, quail, song sparrows, purple finches, Great-tailed Grackles, and hummingbirds are all over the place, including nesting birds.
      So get off your @$$ and go birding! 😉 And yes, F/5.6 is plenty. I use the RF 100-500, which only opens to F/10 with the 1.4x extender and fully zoomed out. I'm getting really good results with it, even for butterflies (without the extender, it focuses to under 3 feet).

      f/5.6 is more than enough when f/6.3 is too much on Micro Four Thirds. Example: ua-cam.com/video/dM7ej4Nphgo/v-deo.html - Bumble bees I shot today. Calling you out Kasey, that Sony doesn't stand a chance to a master of manual focus. I'm using the gh6 with panasonic 100-400 which as you know gives me a max reach of 800mm ff equivalent. The 100-400 is also fairly light comparatively and compact too for what it is. It's also a 'fairly' affordable route too given some of the alternatives. I'm just wondering why you being very experienced in the panasonic line have decided to avoid this combination which to me is quite a fantastic setup. The image/video quality as far as I can see is superb and that 800mm reach is insane. Also when you consider shooting at 800mm with the IBIS being so good in the gh6 you can hand hold at 800mm and get stable shots and video, I mean thats just mad that you can do this. I used to have the 200-500mm on the nikon system and first as you rightly pointed out, it didn't have enough reach, but man it was a huge and heavy beast, impractical really. Now I can throw on a rucksack with the panny and take that lens with me everywhere I go in the even I need long reach. So why have you veered away from panasonic? Have you just lost faith in the mft system? I think until other manufacturers come close to matching the reach as well as the form factor of panasonic the mft system is definitely not dead.

      he posted a video with a borrowed Panny 100-400 within the last month, irrc. I think his copy had too stiff a zoom ring and.. compared to Fuji or Sony... the image quality isn't as good as it could be. Though I agree, it's a phenomenal lens for it's size / weight / cost.

      Do you know how to get the cinematic look? I guess not since you think it's because of the camera. Even a FF camera will look uncinematic if it's shot at F/8.

    Please help me list camera settings and physical actions/choices that can be CHANGED to make a photo better artistically or creatively? Is there anything else, outside of these 2 broad groups, that matters to effect the creative output? Variable CHOICES. Not in post processing.
    Help me think outside of the box.
    Equipment purchases of course. A new lens doesn’t count or make the list. Things you choose in the moment even if you prepare them in advance. Obviously you have to put in the battery, take off the lens cap, and focus. There are a few binary choices we will exclude. Adding a filter. Turning on the flash. Anything that is not variable can be added to a separate binary list instead. Yes or no choices.
    I’m not trying to improve any technical specifications. I will assume it’s a perfect camera. Infinite resolution, sharpness and dynamic range. Any brand or model firmware settings that you know. The rules may change depending on how this goes. For example focus distance is not something you would normally change, just focus on the subject every time. ISO will not be used creatively. We will assume the goal is to obtain the best quality possible without noise at higher ISOs. DOF can be changed a few ways. Not all of them are needed if you’ve already listed 2 methods. There are many settings in a camera that are not significant because they can be modified in post instead. We will not include anything that can also be done post processing. To make it simple let’s assume only the Raw image is captured. This takes away many settings that only effect Jpg.
    There are 2 or 3 categories in this answer that do not need to be subcategorized. I broke down one category because I feel it’s not obvious. I came up with 6. A few are so obvious you may not remember to list them. I won’t give them away because someone will get it.
    This matters. Should I start?

    I use the A74 with the sony 200 to 600. Great combo. 10bit video. Although I don't use a monopod for tracking birds in flight for photos I do like it for video. Just makes it less shaky. That crapper monopod you got isn't the answer. By far, the best I have used is the Gitzo GM4532 Series 4 Carbon Fiber Monopod. Will set you back $369USD. Then you need the Wimberley MH-100 MonoGimbal Head at $179 and finally the Wimberly Ap-620 Lens Foot for the 200 to 600 for $79. Understand it is expensive and the total this is just under $630 but it is so light and will last you for years. That foot on the Sony 200-600 is weak. That monopod you had was painful to watch. I hate the three leg monopods. Can you even count that as a monopod. Just sell some more T-shirts and get yourself a great monopod. And yes, I bought a T-shirt from you to do my part.

      Do you think the 100-400 would suffice for birds in flight video especially as the A7iv has the 1.5X crop at 4k60? Or is it worth it 200-600?

    • @garfieldirwin
      @garfieldirwin 2 роки тому +2

      @@Zarar5 FWIW my answer is no, the 100-400 isn't enough for birds even when shooting crop mode. I shoot a lot of bird videos and the 2xTC rarely comes off my 200-600, though I only shoot FX as there are too many trade-offs when shooting DX. The 100-400 complements the 200-600 for short range work, but if it's a question of either/or, the 200-600 is the better lens just because of the extra reach.

    The Sony Alpha 1 does NOT have animal eye AF in video. Some flagship. LOSER
    Wait until late June and early July for your baby birds. Most songbirds and hawks will have fledged and left the nest but still beg for food from their parents. I have a hilarious photo of a fully-fledged mockingbird chasing its mother on foot down the sidewalk, mouth agape and wings flapping. I also have a shot of a red-tailed hawk giving its near-grown chicks a squirrel to eat. Listen in the woods for high-pitched, repeating squeals; it could be hawk chicks calling for food.
    Addendum: Canon Rumors just confirmed leaked specs for the upcoming R7. APS-C sensor, 32MP, 4K/60, HD/120, C Log 3. Also another crop body, the R10, is coming. It will probably replace the M series. Announcements are expected in two weeks. Are you intrigued?

    In-lens image stabilisation is far better with long telephoto lenses compared to in-camera body stabilisation (because the camera body stabilisers have to work too hard). But of course...nothing beats a solid tripod with a good fluid video head.

    Cool again. I would never go back to it, but my Sony RX100 VII appeared to be totally parfocal (ie never lost focus whilst zooming on the 24-200 range). Same things happen with Bridge Cameras and Camcorders - they don't lose focus..I have no idea why it seems so difficult for separate lens systems...well until you realise you have to sell your whole life to get a cinematography lens. Always follow the money I guess :)

    You should try the Tamron 150-500. It's a lot lighter than the Sony and smaller and you get almost as much reach. And you can use a push/pull technique
