Considering the age of this post, I'm sure you know that this was about Sid, who wasn't lost In death but to schizophrenia. Give Pigs (three different ones) a go.
The Wall was my late wife's favorite Pink, she passed away in 2015. It's all good we had 38 great years together, everytime I hear this song I think of her.✌️
Same with my father! I was blessed to know, learn and watch him for 42 years.. he should've been gone long ago, I was prepared to find him overdosed as a kid and never came. After 20+ years of sobriety, we found him the way he wanted to go I guess. With a video and all. I'm so thankful that the Lord saw fit for him to stick around while we grew up! Cheers mate! Life is beautiful and bitter at the same time.
This song was about their original guitarist, Syd Barrett, who lost his mind after too much acid and couldn't function at one point. During the recording, Syd came to visit them in the studio. He had turned from a frizzy-haired hippy kid into a chubby, bald, middle-aged man who was obsessed with brushing his teeth every few minutes. He was there, but he wasn't there.
I am very sorry about the loss of your brother. May his memory be a blessing. My brother died this recently, and at his funeral we played a song he enjoyed which makes us think of him - Born to be Wild.
My older brother fell victim to Schizoprenia in his late teens. He was the best of us. His talent, wit and looks left us all in the dust. He was also fearless. And schizophrenia robbed him of his glorious, unbounded and gifted self. Oh Ron, how I wish you were here.

My soulmate of 21 years, introduced me to Pink Floyd..I lost my love, 2021, to kidney failure..He was only 47..I'm left to raise our 9yr old son, without his Dad..This song makes me think of him & remember how I felt, when I first heard it, with my love❤

Shine On You Crazy Diamond (both parts) is a critical part of both this song and album. And yes, I get hypnotized by your machine :-) Love your commentary, also!
it's about Syd Barrett.. it's so sad. When I hear this song, I think of my son who passed. We lost him several years prior to his death to addiction. Glimmers of him came back during covid after when he got clean for two months. We were all home and got to spend a lot of time with the old Matthew, but then he relapsed and died. But the years of him being out there, missing him, wanting him to come back home and be himself... that's what this song feels like to me... just longing and missing and being powerless...
Impossible to choose a favorite of from Pink Floyd, but this is my favorite one, it's deeply personal. Seems that way for everyone I know that loves it. It is timeless, I never get sick of listening to it, and almost makes me cry everytime. Thanks Polo for doing these reactions.
I love watching you and other young people’s reactions to the music I grew up listening to. Now you see why us boomers are stuck in the 70’s. We had the best music of all time 😊
As a millennial who just hit 30 and finally got around to getting my turntable set up with a good pair of headphones (the right way as I've been told before lol), It's definitely more of an experience than just "songs on an album". Just taking the time to sit there and listen from side A to B to end with the lyric booklet was something else. Never forget: There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it's all dark. :)
My mom loved this band, this was her favorite song, I started guitar to impress her by playing it.... she passed 2 and a half years ago before I finished my first semester of highschool. I had this played at her funeral. Miss you mom. ❤

I'm here, listening to this, thinking of my best friend since high school, like a brother to me. He also died of a heart attack at 45, 3 years ago. Coincidentally, my uncle also died of a heart attack at 45.
Pink Floyd is known for the sonic atmospheres they create. This song is so simple, its acoustic and bare bones. And it ‘s every bit as impactful. I suggest watching this live from the Pulse concert. It’s not so much about death, more about the absence of someone who is still here but not really here or present. Such an amazing song because of its simplicity.
For their 20th wedding anniversary my mom gave my dad divorce papers. This song helped my dad through the divorce as well as his first year of sobriety. The "Two lost souls swimming in a goldfish bowl, year after year. Running over the same old ground, is how we found, the same old fears.... Wish you were here." was my dad's fave lines. He bought the poster of the artwork for this song and framed it. 11 years after his death I know have that very poster of his hanging on my wall.
So is The Great Gig in the Sky - especially when you know its meaning: It's someone as they are dying - fighting against it, despairing about it, and then realizing they can't stop it and accepting it. When you know what it stands for, it becomes one of the most haunting songs you will ever hear.
@@go-nogo1475 I hear you! Clare Torry is the singer. She came in as a "gig worker" for a day. Listened to the chord progression and improvised the vocals based on the dying theme. Knocked it out in a couple of hours (like 3 takes). Only got 30LB for it (like $400 today). With how famous her vocals became, she ended up suing Pink Floyd to get songwriting credit for it (after all, she came up with the "lyrics"); they reached an agreement where she got a lot more $$$ and is listed on the album now with writing credits for the song. The Great Gig in the Sky! For pure emotion with no actual words. Clare Torry evokes so much emotion without singing a single word. Pink Floyd were geniuses when they asked her to sit in on this song.

I hope at some point you can listen to the entire album without interruption. Just put your headphones on and sit in your most comfortable chair and take the journey. The songs flow together and are meant to be listened to as the whole. The song is about Syd Barrett, the original frontman and chief songwriter of Pink Floyd, who left the group in 1968 after his mental and physical health and reliabity deteriorated thanks to heavy drug use, mostly LSD. He was finally released of his earthly bonds in 2006. 🌹🌹Happy Birthday! 🌹🌹

There is a ton of feeling written into the album. There is a lot behind it, and the history of this album really gives a whole new prospective to look at for both the band itself and the music from all of their albums.

I have been digging it all my life wish you were here with my favorite album and I love the way you feel your music bro you would have fit right into the '70s man keep up the good work rock on
One of the few Floyd songs that doesn’t lose something by being taken out of the Album context. Ordinarily i would advise you to listen to whole albums in sequence and then cut them up for YT as the flow from one track to the next is a big part of the experience. The albums are almost always bigger than the sum of their excellent parts.
Lost both parentsxand my beloved big brother Daniel who i miss daily and now my beloved big sis is battling cancer shes also survived mrsa which when she had it had a 5% chance of survival. I pray for her daily.,l
This song has ALWAYS been my favorite Pink Floyd song. This is the music I grew up listening to in elementary school.. You should read about Syd Barret, who named the band and was the co-founder . He was kicked out of the band because he did so much LSD that it liquified his brain. He died in 2006 and his last known words, in an interview when asked, “Are you Syd Barrett?” were, “Leave me alone. I’ve got to get some coleslaw.”

I have been digging it all my life wish you were here with my favorite album and I love the way you feel your music bro you would have fit right into the '70s man keep up the good work rock on
It is amazing live. 12 times I've seen it live and it's always been superb
Another great Floyd song is On The Turning Away. Great lyrics, great music. Thanks for all you do.
Dark Side Of The Moon...entire album
Well said, great reaction. Timeless song.
