Netflix loses almost a million subscribers in three months - BBC News

- Netflix lost almost 1m subscribers between April and July, as the number of people quitting the service accelerated.
But that was not as many as the streaming giant had feared, with the firm's chief executive, Reed Hastings, saying that popular shows such as Stranger Things may have prevented a further slide in subscriptions.
The company reported its first subscriber loss since 2011 in April, news that was followed by hundreds of job cuts and a sharp drop in its share price.

I’m glad. Netflix needs to be put in place. There’s a lot of competition in the streaming sector. Netflix isn’t the king it once was, but they keep charging as if they are.
Well for years the company has been operating under a loss so can't blame them for wanting to flex their reach now and then 😁
Amazon Video has been stepping up and actually produced some quality contents.
Their relentless “woke” content has also become tiring. I’m not going to watch stuff if I’m going to get insulted every 5 min.
It was somewhat reciprocal with Netflix, the customers were getting almost everything for one monthly fee. Yes, Netflix was profiting A LOT, but now the customers are forced to pay for multiple monthly fees to access the shows and movies they love. It’s like cable all over again.

Last time I looked, Netflix doesn’t allow you to browse their library before you sign up.. you can search for a specific show but not see their entire library. It’s a ridiculous thing to expect people to sign up without knowing what they are getting.
If that’s true that really is so stupid lol
It's probably because you can always find a torrent for a show
I think it's only if you have previously had a month's free trial that you can't see their catalog. At least, that's how it was when I signed up.
Easy to browse any streaming service's catalog. Plenty of catalogs.. I'm surprised over 100 people don't know this.

If you are paying for an online streaming service, you shouldn't have to watch ads, reduced fee or not. You're paying for instant access.
well, I agree with you, but ppl. used to pay for cable TV and watch ads...
You realise there are people who are happy to watch ads if fee is cheaper. I don't understand why people have problem with this you don't like ads just don't subscribe to this option. Why you have problem with having choices
that's not how economics works, if you have the time but not the money of course it's better
@@Victor-tl4dk that's not a good comparison

i used to pay for netflix when it had great shows. but they kept cancelling amazing shows after only one season so they don’t deserve my money.
Or they buy one season shows that they could easily provide a budget to revive and continue the show
This happened to me when they canceled The OA
Santa Clarita Diet though, that was a great show. They should've filmed a fourth season.
In some cases it can be moved somewhere else. That's what happened to Tuca & Bertie.
They don't continue the Mind Hunter. Sad.
I'll be cancelling my subscription if any one of 3 things happen:
1 - Using Netflix in 2 different houses is blocked (I live half the week in my flat for work, and the rest of the week at my GFs)
2 - Prices go up any more in the next year or two
3 - If I'm forced to either watch ads, or have to pay extra to NOT have to watch ads.
If any of these 3 things happen, then Goodbye to Netlfix!
Start saying goodbye.
The prices never went up. You still have the option to pay 9£ per month. You will only pay more if they you want to watch in 4k.
They actually want you to pay and watch ads.

Personally, I'm quite disappointed by the lack of choice offered by Netflix because of the tendancy from each streaming services to demand to have the exclusive right to broadcast a show. To me, this kind of right should be given only if the content offered by streaming services is created by them.
It's up to consumers to demand that streaming services don't lock their content. Otherwise I don't think they have much incentive.

Password sharing isn’t a problem, the value people get from the subscription does not justify the price. Netflix didn’t prioritized quality with its self made content. All the anime and video game live adaptations Netflix produced has been received poorly to the point where it’s meme about. Netflix’s problem is their management, who make bad decision after bad decision.
Boycott racist U.S products
Are you saying the Witcher was bad? That show is fire. So is Avatar.
The management is a bunch of rich people who don't really need to give a damn. When they get their cocaine and escorts/prostitutes their focus goes out the window. This happens everywhere. When most average people reach their goal, which is having a lot of money, they won't use it on other people.
@@oldmoney1022 Witcher was indeed good, but the other live adaptations were so bad that the idea of a Netflix adaption gets memed. Have you seen the adaptations for Death Note, Cowboy Bebop or Fullmetal Alchemist? To my knowledge, Avatar adaptation has yet to be released. If it has, then I'll hold my judgement until I watch it. Regardless, Netflix prioritizes quantity over quality.
Axing good shows (eg. OA) after a few seasons because apparently starting new shows bring better ROI. Bye Netflix!
Netflix did it to themselves, I have very little sympathy for them. They offered the same exact service and wanted 2x as much for it than when it started, and the quality of options had not changed. In the meantime umpteenth competitors entered their market offering just as good of options at lower rates. Simply put: they priced themselves out of their own market. I was a Netflix subscriber for years, and I saw my monthly subscription rate slowly creep up yet the programs available for streaming where limited in each category and many of heir new shows contained "woke" content I just couldn't relate to. In the meantime their nostalgic offerings were very limited while free apps carry tons of that content. The only thig Netflix had/still has going for it are no ads/commercial breaks but it sounds like they are toying with that idea-bad idea on their part. Netflix adding ads will likely be the nail in the coffin for them, since not streaming ads was one of the major original selling appeals for their service.
I completely agree with you. It's greed, and thankfully people are saying "no thanks" and Netflix is feeling it.
Rising costs is potent. just an excuse to get more profit from the thought that ppl. are blind and willing to pay more right now.
People choosing the better service that doesn't short change them is called capitalism.

Right after that moment i realize it’s huge flaw, not realistic modern movement. i blocked any of those crap messages ever since
Lol, if you want "non woke" content you can just watch Fox News all-day
Why would you fee sympathy for a company anyways
You lost credibility at the "woke" comment. Woke is not a legitimate criticism. It's a term used by bigots. You either need to accept that shows and films aren't all made just for you, or come up with actual criticisms.
Also, Netflix isn't "woke". They made three 'Kissing Booth' films. People are complaining about their content precisely because they are behaving like a mindless corporation. They are preferencing too much lazy, cheap content filled with stereotypical plots and characters (like 'Riverdale'), over their unique and beloved content (like 'Anne with an E'). Basically, they are choosing content with short-term viewership gains over content with long-term viewership gains and loyalty. And that's a dumb move because it fills Netflix with poorer quality content and good half-finished content, and alienates its loyal viewers.
Amazon Prime has alot more selection then netflix in terms of old movies from the 80s,90s,early 2000s and they usually have all sequels, whereas Netflix just usually has current movies or fairly old popular ones and sometimes they don't have all parts of a movie that's part of a trilogy.
There’s Amazon prime in China, but only for fast shipping delivery, but Prime Video are not available in China. There’s Prime Video in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

I'm glad. Streaming services are learning from Netflix and what they can do different or better. Now some of those streaming services are doing way better than Netflix
Netflix charges me $20 a month just to get 4k streaming. 4k is included in almost every other streaming service without paying extra. And the worst thing is the majority of shows are not even available in 4k and I never even knew until recently. With software like sonarr and radarr which automates torrent downloading with plex theres really no reason to keep paying when you can get everything you want easier for free.
Ironically with the rise of streaming, piracy dramatically decreased around the world because of the convenience and low cost. Fast forward a few years there are so many different services now each locking content away that you need to run 4+ subs just to watch everything you want to. This in turn will once again push customers away and create a piracy boom imo.
If you like documentaries, there are a few extremely reliable, safe, free up to date and easy to access streaming sites available.
Why do I need to pay 5€+5€+5€+5€+5€ and manage subscriptions of all these different services if I can pirate for free on demand AND get content that none of these companies offer (because you can't find them on streaming services).
As someone once said, piracy is an issue of service and convenience, not price and I couldn't agree more. If I was offered ALL the content I might want, I'd gladly pay whatever fair price is stamped.
Piracy is very necessary so that they will evolve their business model.
This is spot on. Locked content and forcing you to pay for several accounts. No way in hell im doing that. Alot of people have forgotten how convinient bittorrent can be! Thats what happens when these companies get to greedy.
Piracy is increased more than ever. Because movies are now coming between 30 to 45 days after theatre release, there are more chances of getting in before it even reaches to ott. Also with plenty of shows, there are entire season of your favourite are available.
"Why dont they like us anymore?"
*Raises prices, cancels every original show after 1 or 2 years, introduces advertisements on a paid service*
"It doesnt make any sense, its a complete mystery..."
Right, not going to watch a show canceled after 1 season. The reason most people don’t watch some shows, is that they are waiting for multiple seasons to be released so they can enjoy it all.

No mystery my friend, it's called increased profits. Because of that, we'll have to pony up, even our beer and comfort snacks, money or watch local programming! Then again, it's greed like this that provokes innovation. When Americans feel we're getting a raw deal, we generally rebell in some way.

Its over $20 a month to simply stream above 1080p. If you have a 4K HDR TV, you have to pay over $20 a month just to watch a show at the resolution of your TV. The free version of UA-cam lets you stream any content at 4K that is available, so don't try telling me this isn't about them trying to raise revenue out of sheer greed. @@V01DIORE Lucrative as in high pay. They may also have higher budgets, but I said nothing about the overall quality. (A crappy show with high production values is still crappy, but that's not what I was talking about.)
@@EugWanker The spending would be good if they used it correctly, you never seen all the memes about Netflix adaptations?
if theyd stop removing shows/movies so much they wouldnt have this problem. not to mention, they add movies but not the 2nd part or more of the movie
I was already considering canceling my subscription a couple months ago but when they decided to hike their prices that was it. The library is mediocre and the resolution isn't even 4k unless you pay 20$.
Putting price up = lose even more subscribers many have said they can’t afford the high cost it is at now and why should loyal customers have to pay for others crimes. The company should have out more security in place in the first place.
"raise prices more"
I've had Netflix's highest sub package for years and they raised the price yet again. with the limited amount of shows and the trash shows like love island and crap they keep renewing and cancelling all the good shows I'm leaving Netflix this month.
It wasn't for you anyway. "Good shows" is relative and personal. Netflix will renew whatever is popular, is you don't like what's often popular on Netflix, then it wasn't for you in the first place.
Same, super trash movies and shows.
@@maximusasauluk7359 Nah Netflix js garbage. Nothing interesting to watch.
I left this month for the same reason. I'm tired of prices increasing whilst shows they promoted me to watch get axed after one season.
I hate how they keep removing showsss
DVD sales are still going strong in the US market, millions sold every year in retail.
The password sharing issue is something shared by all streaming services. It really can't be stopped.
It would've been nice if you put this into perspective by looking at all streaming services. With the economy what it is, luxuries like these are the 1st thing to go.

In Argentina they already made that move. They will charge an extra $220 (pesos) for every user that uses the service in an different ip. So in my case we have the 5 user premium plan for my entire family and we live in 5 different homes they will charge us an extra $1100 (pesos). In my opinion that is a scam, because we are paying for the premium plan. Who said it had to be in the same house? That's the whole point of a streaming service, what's the difference with cable then? They just want more profit and it's backfiring. Here most people are canceling the subscrition and will use free alternative platforms to watch the same exact shows.
Make that a million and one… we’re cancelling. Their prices continue to go up while their movie options aren’t increasing at the same rate. Sigh.
My issue is not so much the price, it's the lack of newer films on offer compared to a service like NowTV (granted it's more expensive). I also don't agree that they have price plans based on video quality. I think in 2022 1080p resolution should be the standard and at the absolute minimum 720p. Instead they're charging 6.99 for 480p ? 🤔
It's up to consumers to demand that streaming services don't lock their content. Otherwise I don't think they have much incentive to give away rights to their shows.
I hope this doesn't affect the new Stranger Things
Stranger Things is garbage.
@@titusmccarthy Because you don't like something it doesn't make it garbage, I don't like McDonalds food but it is popular despite my dislike of it.

literally everyone is screaming that account sharing IS NOT the problem, its that everything on netflix is SHIT while its so expensive now.
Imagine Netflix having all anime dub/sub
This, by the way, is a substraction from over 200 million subscribers. There is no crisis for Netflix, except for the one manufactured by the stockmarket.
It's like everything in our modern world. We expect infinite growth. If the economy isn't growing it's stagnation and the government needs to be voted out. If a company isn't growing its failing and you need to get your money out... Its unsustainable.
@@kidShibuya Exactly. I can never understand the concept of chasing infinite growth. There’s bound to be a peak somewhere, and like you said, it’s unsustainable. If I was running my own company, I wouldn’t be chasing growth on growth on growth every month. As long as I’m consistently making healthy and comfortable profits every month, I’m happy. It doesn’t matter if In some months, my profit falls, as long as it’s still above the amount to be doing well comfortably
Tubi is great and free. You might have to watch a 30 second ad or two but it’s nothing like the 5 minute long ad breaks on broadcast.
I see I can watch all the Van damme and Seagull movies 😐
Yeah I enjoy watching some of the movies in their library and don't mind their ad breaks. I haven't tried watching any of their original content though 😅
I think that's good for people who don't mind ads. Personally, I dislike ads so much I don't even accept the 30 day free offers from Hulu and others. For me it is about good content and no ads. If Netflix fixed their content I would be happy to pay for it. But I'm glad there are places like Tubi for those who are OK with ads. It's a win-win.
I use my Netflix to solely watch comfort shows like Gilmore girls and friends. Mainly sitcom I’ve seen millions of times before, with that being said I can understand the frustration for some users who feel like their content has been lacking
The advert thing maybe if they did a box in the corner were you Rach for what you want to watch. And the ad play's just in the corner, and if you want to watch full screen you click on it. You have sound all the time. While searching.
Netflix is mostly full of total junk and even watching literally 24x7 you're never going to get through all of it.
The constantly changing categories on the homepage also do my head in, why do things like "Continue Watching" keep disappearing and I then have to again search for the show to continue it?
It also recommends and "Because you watched" stuff I have already seen on Netflix itself. They should know what I've already seen. They talk about their big data prowess but can't overcome a simple bump in the road like that.
Finally, why does it do predictive text and return search hits for shows it doesn't actually have?
They seem to be slowly taking on water and the service is not what it was.
The search bar will predict things that are available in other regions, and maybe even some things that aren't, so that Netflix can see how much interest there is in something. If there's enough search hits, they know it's worth buying a show's streaming licence for a particular country when it's next available, because they can see that there's already people interested.
Subscribed to Netflix 2014 unsubscribed 2022.
The cost of being alive has increased exponentially at a time when people are struggling to make ends meet Netflix decides to put up it's monthly subscription prices talk about being heartless, that's why I cancelled my subscription.
Now furthermore if Netflix should ever introduce advertising I certainly would never consider going back Netflix, they simply got too greedy when everyone else were having to tighten their belts it was the final insult.
It's an opinion just as you have a right to your opinion please remember so do I, and if it wasn't so we wouldn't living in a democracy now would we.
I don't reply to negative comments.
the reason they are going under is because over the fees..They started well and now they have ridiculous fees.. plus all the feature they wanted to sgop, it got overwhelming

If Netflix has 220 Million paid subscribers - and lose 1 million, that makes it a 0.5% decline.
If the subscription is $9.99 per month, then they generate $2.2 Billion per month. That's $26 Billion per year.
Companies can have a 0.5% decline, though it wouldn't look nice to have it broadcast on the BBC 😊
How many times have they hiked prices and how much price increase had it been?
They are ripping their customers off.. as a 90’s baby I remember how nice it was to own your own VHS or DVD movies and watch them whenever you wanted without subscription fees and stupid annoying ads. If people these days had any common sense they would do just that.
So it should. Two thirds of the movies are dubbed, foreign or B grade.
We also get spanish/English language movies and shows with no captions. So for me I have no idea what half of the people are saying.
If Netflix goes to ads it'll get the flick from me.
Commercials. No thanks, that’s why I left television in the first place. I would pay MORE to continue not having any adverts!
my thoughts exactly. I grew up watching more ads than tv shows and I'm I don't want to go back to that.
Don't worry, that option will come soon. That way not only they will make money with new costumers that pay less, but they will make even more money with people who doesn't want commercials. Perfect!!!
There aren't any commercials on any of the movies i watch or adds i have nextflix and the others ones 🤟
I’m glad you reported this, im cancelling now since it’s so expensive and regional lock.
In a world where everything goes up, you need to adjust the price that could fit in your consumers pocket.
Solution: make your own streaming server. Have you server host Plex, Radarr, Sonarr, Lidarr, Overseerr, Jackett. Services like Netflix have inferior lossy video and audio. With your own server, you can choose to host lossless video and audio straight from 4k blu-ray sources.
