    As we head into 2024, the landscape for streaming seems to be changing rapidly, with services like Amazon Prime, Netflix and Disney+ focusing more on advertising and sports than ever. The question is who's going to win because of it (and it's not the viewers)

      Yup, this 100%. Maybe not TPB specifically because it seems to be past its prime, but piracy in general is certainly seeing a resurgence. Piracy has always been an issue of convenience, and with the big legal streamers making themselves more and more inconvenient over the last couple of years, piracy is becoming more and more popular.
      Look at music. First iTunes and then streaming music platforms like Spotify have basically _killed_ music piracy. I'm sure it still exists, but you _never_ hear about people doing it. Netflix had, for a time, killed off so much TV and film piracy.
      But by cracking down on account sharing, adding advertising, increasing prices, cancelling shows seemingly on a whim, and balkanising shows across a dozen different platforms, streaming video is no longer looking anywhere near as convenient as it did in 2015. We need a world where:
      1. Prices are reasonable and reasonably stable.
      2. With few exceptions, popular shows are widely available across a variety of platforms.
      3. Accounts can be used by their users to a reasonable extent
      4. If you're producing exclusives, put a good faith effort into giving them a proper conclusion. If you develop a reputation for producing one-season shows that attract a strong cult following and then cancelling them, people are going to say goodbye.

Cable had installation charges, min 1 yr contracts, rental fees of equipment, and all of it controlled by company. Wanted HBO? You needed to get basic package PLUS cable PLUS HBO package. That could be a min of $75 in today’s money ($50 min back then). Now if you want HBO, you can just get Max for $15. And Max comes with other sister company content

      Amazon Prime Video also serves as a gateway to many other streaming offerings, including local offerings but also content like Discovery+(with Eurosport), DAZN, MGM, MTV/Paramount) etc., while Apple TV is now coming bundled with Paramount+ in some markets. And of course, both serve a vital function in their parent companies' main subscription business and are more likely to be able to withstand losses as they can be subsidized by delivery, cloud or music streaming.

      @@weird-guy Amazon uses Prime to hook consumers into making Amazon the first, and often the only, place they look when they want to buy something online. Prime Video is, in effect, a loss-leader designed to make Prime seem like an even better deal than if all it did was offer free 2-day shipping. That's why they don't mind if people who live in different homes share a single Prime account. I used to live with my brother. I was going to get Prime for myself, but my brother already had it, and since we lived together, that seemed wasteful. But he bought a house in upstate NYC 4 years ago and I stayed in NYC. I still use his Prime account, and Amazon hasn't cared. They must figure that it's more important that I shop on Amazon than if I pay for my own Prime account.
      I think Apple's streaming service was created for a similar reason. They aren't trying to make money from streaming. They want to sell more iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. I bought an iPad Pro last month and it came with 3 free months of Apple TV+. If I recall correctly, it used to come with a free year, but I might be misremembering. Basically, it's like a toaster. You can buy a toaster from Amazon and eat a bagel while watching Reacher, or you can open a bank account and get the toaster for free (or, in Apple's case, get to use the toaster for 3 months for free before you start paying to rent it.)

    Ad-based revenue is the only business model that makes sense for Netflix (or any other streaming service that offers 3rd party licensed content) - the problem is that content licenses are a continuous cost and calculating its value, when your customers are only paying a flat rate to access the entire library, is a _hard_ problem (in the mathematical sense of the word.
    Calculating the value of self-produced content, OTOH, is very easy: you estimate trends based on the massive viewership data you collected, sum your expected revenue, double by the expected lifetime of the content and you have your content creation budget - now we're back at a classic media production pipe: pour in money and wait to see if the producers can come up with anything good. Which explains why Netflix started the massive production drive (that, and seeing all the media companies pulling all their content to their own streaming services today that show only exclusive content).

    Anti-monopoly laws should force the content to be licensed to all interested platforms for the same price (barring ~two weeks "exclusivity" window). In case platforms would try set up artificial prohibitively high prices to make getting their shows unappealing for competitors, the show should move to the public domain.

    • @Mataw0
      @Mataw0 4 місяці тому +1

      This is the core problem. As each show is licensed on different platforms, this isn't a competitive market, but different monopoles. Which is why each company is stuck on a "create exclusive content and drive the price up".
      It worked in the beginning because people could afford a 2 - 3 subscription, but now people are just not able to afford everything. If a high quality show is missing for someone's library, they are just not going to watch it or torrent the content they are missing.

    What is missing here is both a deeper look into the US market as well as a more global perspective. In the US, Fox/Tubi, ABC/ESPN(+Disney+Hulu) and NBC/Peacock) are planning a joint sports streaming service, while CBS is planning to run their own thing with Paramount+, which they hope to boost with the super bowl. As correctly pointed out, sports is going to be a major game changer in the streaming market, especially in the US, but it has to be seen whether a stand-alone service can survive.
    Additionally, internationally there already is a (failing) sports streaming service (DAZN), while another (Eurosport Player) has been folded into Warner/max. And in Europe, let's not forget Sky/Wow(Comcast/NBC), which has teamed up with Warner in some markets and is even offering bundled Peacock and Paramount+ content, and local players like Mediaset or RTL are also fairly succesful as "local champions", that sometimes come bundled with music streaming services etc.

    Basically offer official DOWNLOADS of the videos, much like what Bandcamp does with music.

    Some of your conclusions are wrong. The HBO/Discovery mergers is an absolute mess. As someone who has been a subscriber to HBO for 25 years, I am now doubting continuing my subscription. The people who wanted HBO, wanted high quality content and were wiling to pay for it. All of the discovery content is reality TV trash, which makes finding good content on HBO tedious. They also have no ability to vote up or hide content, so you are always stuck looking at the same trash again and again.
    Additionally, I've now seen HBO originals like Band of Brothers on Netflix. Why pay for HBO if the content is going to end up on other platforms.

    Interesting report. Perhaps a bit too partial to Netflix. Also, when the report cites Variety identifying the “most anticipated” new streaming shows that is an industry entertainment publication talking to people in the industry… not the average viewer’s thoughts.
    However, the one item that I am interested to see in terms of how it pans out is the Peacock move regarding that streaming only football event. Sure they got a bunch of new sign ups, but 30,60 and 90 days from now, will they have the largest number of people ever dropping a service . That is to say people that many folks were not really wanting Peacock, they just signed up to see that game…. they may well drop the service. if this pans out positively, Peacock will be deemed as “brilliant“… If hoards of people cancel their service, creating a loss for the record books, Peacock will be seen as desperate.

    9:50 - Catalogs to Netflix. These are "previews" for the service(s) that own (will own) the content, or just abandon it on Netflix (WB's Snyderverse?). Say you put Suits on Netflix today in international markets and domestic. Who can ALSO play Suits? Peacock may have a shared deal like WBD does with Band of Brothers, or temporary exclusivity. So then the other studios license the content to Netflix to "enter" a market ahead of a wider launch? Why would I think this? Netflix makes money globally. Max Makes money in 2 territories. Max launches in Latin America, EMEA, or APAC, moves the series back to the "home" service, and boom, built-in audience. So, the licensors are either just trying to make some extra cash, or paving the road for an audience.

    Every new industry have a "boom" time where lots of companies jump on the same new successful bandwagon. This leads to fragmentation and less money for each company because there aren't enough customers out there to make all of them succeed at the same time. Look at mobile phone companies for example. There used to be loads of companies trying to benefit from the smartphone boom but since then the likes of LG, HTC and others have all but disappeared which has benefited the Samsung and Apple who gain the customers who used to be with those companies. I think the goal of each of these streaming services is to outlast the competition and reap the rewards after their competitors give up

Netflix because they're the largest, most established in the space, and streaming is their primary source of revenue, and Prime Video because it's the only service whose parent company isn't PRIMARILY in the entertainment business. As for sports, you don't delve into another aspect. How much do they have to pay for streaming rights (A LOT), and how much subscriber growth did it generate (not counting those who drop the service after the event). I would venture to say it is a net loss. Also, another category to look at is how much cash does the company have. Apple had few points but they have tremendous resources behind them (as does Peacock). By the end of 2024 I'd say Paramount+ will go away, and Disney+ will be folded into Hulu or the other way around. I also predict that you will see a huge growth in torrent piracy. Netflix had the right idea in it's inception. Make the content affordable and accessible and people will pay and not pirate, and it worked! They all seem to have forgotten that lesson.

      Hulu will cease to exist will be only Disney + only that already happens here in Europe, although they were dumb and in my country are rebrandin cable tv fox channels into star like already is in Latin America, India ect, if they don’t change their strategy they will eventually give up on streaming
      For sports my country already has premium channels called sport tv and eleven sports and they also have their own streaming platforms.

    • @ColonelGreen
      @ColonelGreen 3 місяці тому

      Sigh. Content's affordability is based on what it costs to make it. In the very early days of streaming, most of the new stuff on it was effectively being subsidized by theatrical and cable customers. But as those revenue sources decline, streaming has to shoulder more of the direct cost of production. You can't get the totality of media on one service for the monthly cost of a fast food hamburger combo.
