    I am in San Francisco Bay Area and we have catered lunches at work when we need to work through lunch. We ordered the food to be delivered and the cost have more than doubled compare to before the pandemic. This is plainly visible when we order the same dishes from the same restaurants. In addition, we noticed restaurants have now removed utensils, condiments and napkins from their orders...in addition to slightly reduce portion size. Casual sandwich lunch would be at least 17-20 USD, and hot restaurant-type lunch dishes could be $30-$45 USD. The price increase is just insane... It's pretty typical to see 2x to 3x prices these days.

      @@Zoe-dr5ps 20 dollars means a normal sandwich... as in two slides of good quality sandwich bread, or some type of artisan bread, with few slides of sandwich meat and some veggies... Really nothing special except they may toast/grill the bread. It usual comes with a small side of fries (you may call it chips), American chips, salad or soup. Yes, it's just basic sandwich, up charged.

    • @_w_w_
      @_w_w_ Рік тому

      @@Zoe-dr5ps For work meeting lunches or dinners, we would obvious order from restaurants. That said, groceries are getting very expensive such that for single people, it's actually more affordable to eat out instead buying groceries and cook (factor in spoilage issue cause by all the logistics problems). Aside from the inflation, some parts of the US had farm animal welfare laws that went into effect last year. Basically, farm animals are to have a lot more space to roam and provide them a happy life (more than so human in some cases :). Some farms decided it wasn't worth their investment, so they exited certain markets. This create a real shortage in some products and it's amplified by the inflation. Many pork products went up by 2-3x. Our egg prices went up 2.5x but did decline recently to about 2x. For example, beacon prices are just crazy these days... If you have a BLT sandwich of some sort, it's hard to shoulder the increase in beacon cost, and lettuce and tomato, so the restaurants pass them on. We also have increased minimum wage, so often times college graduate jobs may actually pay less than entry-level jobs if someone puts in a bit of overtime. It's a weird combination of factors that's driving up cost on everything.

    This is cheap compared to what we get here. At the rates prices still go up, it might get to a point where we one won't be able to afford lunch. Worse is our government pretends like they don't see it. I for one has been hit very hard by the most recent inflation and at this point, I am more interested in a solution because I don't think an end is near. not really noticed any increase in fast food prices for street food in Asia, most people tend to eat extremely healthy food and prices in markets and streets are pretty much the same as they were 3 years ago. Fast food by large franchises has increased but this is not where most people will go for ready to eat food in Asia typically these outlets deliver to office workers. These fast food outlets do better in shopping malls.
    But if you actually take time to study where the vast majority go to eat it is in mom and pop shops providing hot ready to eat food. There is more demand for sea food and chicken - less demand for pork and beef as pork and beef have been effected by increases in animal feed. many farmers have stopped farming pork and beef as the farm gate price is not worthwhile to continue.
    In more developed cities access to markets is limited most will buy a pot noodle in plastic cup. The only remarkable change in recent times is sales at the check out display shelves are down in all outlets as people who are waiting inline to be served play on their cell phones and are not influenced to buy products placed around the check out tills.

    Well homemade is definitely way cheaper. My strategy since I upgraded my cooking prowess during the lockdowns: Bake own bread (easy, affordable, satisfying). Cook big and portion into freezer meals. Especially as a single person it's way powerful. My latest thing. Just cooking up a box of pasta. Split in portions. About 8 or so. Into containers. And into the freezer. You can do A LOT with some easy to reheat plain pasta, a dash of olive oil or butter and various other bits and bobs. A... Lot. Same goes for rice. Pan meals for days. The main thing. Quality food without a big production and lots of dishes every single day. I'm not even ashamed to say my preferred freezer containers are re-used yoghurt containers. The 500ml ones with lids are practically perfect for it. Fairly good quality plastic containers all things said and done.

I mean, every now and then in the summertime you'll see a few food "trucks" as we have them here in the states but row upon row like one can find in Hong kong, Singapore and most hustling bustling cities??... that I miss, inexpensive but actually phenomenally good!
      And in response to the other comments here... I've never been sick from food in Asia, true, I do stop eating meats when I'm in rural areas because I'm just not sure how well it's prepared or if my western stomach can take it.. but I've traveled all my life all over the world and not had serious issues. Even with the modernization of food transport and preparation we still have salmonella and Ecoli outbreaks here in the states. If you have adapted to foreign food in the past you should be okay! Cheers!
