A consistent heat routine helps greatly. 1 bit of advice for a super curly beard like myself. Don't comb straight from the shaft down to the tip. This in my experience is what makes my knots locked in. I start from the tips of the hair. Then work my way up to the shaft. It's more likely to untangle that hair(s) that is in a position to become a knot. Haven't had any since finding a consistent heat routine and grooming from tip to shaft.
Thank you! I don't know that I've ever had a knot, but my beard is SUPER curly (it coils up similar to African American hair) and is very difficult to run a comb through it sometimes. I'll definitely try this technique!
YES!!! Dang beard knots!! I find myself combing too fast so definitely need to slow it down. Also, I believe combing from the bottom and working my way up would help as well. Great video! Thanks for covering this 🤘🏻
Satin pillow case is definitely the way to go! I agree the daily heat routine helps with my curly beard, some good advice here as usual. I have encountered these knots before I started watching your videos a year ago lol.
As always your Chanel is keeping my beard healthy. I have had these for the last few months and couldn't figure it out. Going to up my h2o, and add a better pillow. I know this has slowed my over all growth so again thank you.
I had these pretty bad before. However, I know hydration was lucky to be 1/3 of what they suggest and I had no night routine. Only beard care was in the morning. 100+oz of water a day now and already noticed there are a lot less issues there and a lot less split ends. Also added in butter at night vs morning, better wash routine, and just switched to silk pillowcase this weekend. Picked my fiance up a silk pillowcase as well to try out and her first night laying down, her exact words were, "Ohhh this is nice, we should get new sheets too!" :)
Wow! Much needed video, Perfect timing and spot on with the causes. I just had two beard knots a few days ago on both sides of my cheeks one on each side. I have a natural curly beard but I never really had a problem with knots before at least not this many at one time, I would say that I'd get one knot every 2 to 3 months. But lately I've had trouble sleeping been tossing and turning the last few nights now I know why. Thanks Dan.
Oh the pillow case was a huge game changer. Just changing that made it so I was able to wet, apply oil, and comb it to a presentable state. Before I almost always had to use heat to look presentable. I have experienced this as I am sure many others have. I run into an issue where I will keep playing with it and finding it, and sometimes the whole hair gets pulled out before I get a chance to trim it out. My hair curls a little bit and I have been working on consistent water intake as well.
Yes, the longer my beard has grown, I've learned to slow it down combing through a wet beard.. Growing a massive beard takes tons of patience. For example, like Dan says, you can't trim yourself to a huge beard. That was hard lesson for me to learn, but; just let it grow and let it flow. Eventually, you will arrive to where you orginally planned.
Throughout my beard journey I would always get single hair knots (never knew what it was until now) and would always bother me but never knew what to do or what caused them. Unfortunately, I am guilty of all four 1. I have natural curly hair 2. I do not drink enough water especially living in the Florida Keys 3. I’m always in a rush so I groom too fast 4. I toss and turn in my sleep TEACH THANK YOU!! You are a true educator and inspiration and the knowledge and research you do is unparalleled. Amazing job.
I think I still have it at my sink. I had two hairs recently get tied together and came out as I was combing. Don’t get knots too terribly often but the fact of two hairs knotted together was something to see as it hadn’t before.
That’s so cool that you stopped over, thank you! Being a teacher and coach for the last 12 years helps for sure on camera lol I am binge watching your content tonight!
Perfect timing. I just cut of 3 of those knots and had no clue what' s causing them. Now i think its because my beard rubs on my chest. Thats why the knots are only in that area of my beard. Thanks for the video 👍
Work buddy reccomend your channel...already hittin' home! Thanks for puttin' in the work to bring us this information! -Yep, I have encountered this phenomenon. I didn't know what caused it. I was thinking either dry or over conditioned hair shafts and/or forcing a comb through instead of letting the comb do the work. I didn't realize it was a single strand either. I thought the second strand must have broken too close to the knot to see it. I'm not blessed with beard growing genetics. I need to keep all the hair I can and make the most out'ta what I've got!
Started off with a 1 inch beard and around an 8 inch gotee, as my avatar showes. Just hit a yeard from that point beginning of this month. Beginning to have this problem now. Everything else mentioned in the video is in place except my pillow cases and speed that I use to comb. Will try switching those up to see if it helps. Thanks for the info. Will try to get pics sent to the Wednesday show soon to see where I need to go from here.
Love your videos man! Have really helped me along in my beard journey and great to know about all this! I've had knots on the odd occasion and I don't know if this helps or not, but what seems to work for me is when I reach a knot with my comb, I stop there with my comb still in my beard and get at the knot with my thumb and index finger, fiddle around with it a little bit and it tends to loosen and I'm able to comb it through nice and smoothly afterwards. No one's ever taught me that, I just one day started doing that when I had long hair. (or hair altogether lol) Lots of fragrant love, ilzy
I don't believe I've ever had a beard knot. I did have a very tangled beard, using heat on a daily basis has definitely helped this and really makes all the difference.
Yes! 😱 I have so curly beard that hairs could have "perfect rings" consisting of up to 4 full circles with only 1/3" diameter. So it's easy for them to create knots. Like you said, proper care with oil+butter, co-washing, blow-drying / using heated brush helps a lot.
Thank u 4 ur information. I have long beard(Curly nature ). but it may seriously damaged due to knot.after knot hair will split it to two and grow and also make knot 3 or more hair in my beard.finally I cut it. Oil combing in early morning may help to reduce knots. Don't allow to dry..always wet in nature always reduce knots.Other cause is same as u said.
Not only have I had single hair knots, sometimes I'll have a single hair knot around another single hair, then one of the two sheds and suddenly I have this craaaazy long single hair! Best to take care of knots early, or better yet prevent them to begin with!
Interestingly, I have a rather curly beard and if I have had a knot than another and I have solved it with the daily and night routine, combing softly and stretching my hair with patience and perseverance every day and by the way I have been 3 months without smoking and drinking a day 2 liters of water and I already notice changes in the state of my beard thanks for all your advice inside and outside the channel Dan.
Great advice as usual. Never a knot for me but sometimes a major tangle especially after a motorcycle ride. I’ve found that when I trim back the bottom that is more see through it has helped a ton. I recently took off 2” which about freaked me out but the beard looks so much better and healthier. 😀
I keep a 2nd Chicago comb #8 in the shower (mainly because I forget to bring the 1st one in the shower) and use it once my beard is thoroughly rinsed after washing, it greatly helps reduce tangles and knots. I also comb from the ends of the hair and work my comb clossd to the skin. Let the weight of my hand do the combing.
I've only had one knot (hope I didn't just jinx myself) in my 2 1/2 year old beard and one split end. I definitely take my time combing, combing my beard like I comb my four year old granddaughters hair and have a beard care routine that works for me.
This has definitely been an issue for me. I know I drink enough water every day, so I’ll work on my combing speed and tinkering with my sleeping position and heat routine. Curly beard hair plus the heat and humidity here in Tampa, Florida is rooooough. If all else fails, I am soon due for my fist trim after completing my yeard on September 1st.
Ooh yea usually only happens when i break my routine but ive noticed a good cbd conditioner keeps it a little silkier or smoother when i run a comb through it for a couple of days.
I get them occasionally, maybe once every other week, only under my chin. I have medium long beard that I've been growing for 15 months. I don't know that mine are caused by dehydration because recently I've been drinking more water than ever. I'm guilty of combing to fast, and I don't use heat. And I haven't been using my beard butter recently, just been lazy. I also changed my pillow case recently.. I will try getting back to my old nightly beard butter routine and comb slower.
This happens all the time to my right front chin. I have one spot that always has a knot in it. I have learned to be patient and let the comb do the work and be gentle and it will ease itself out. I noticed i created more knots when I was drying my beard as I was drying it like my head hair versus I need to just pat dry my beard and comb. I cry when I need to cut out those knots...
great video Dan! I used to get them all the time, but now with a great beard routine I rarely have them One thing I do is, I let my beard just soak with regular water for my night routine sometimes. I mean absolutely drenched, while I brush my teeth, wash my face…etc. so almost 10 min of just soaking in plain (distilled) water. Pat dry to damp then either add butter or oil depending on what I think my beard needs that night This really lets my beard hairs soak up that water and lets the butter or oil really lock it in overnight 👊🤘
I know I am late to leave a comment but I have been experiencing beard knots lately, not many but enough to piss me off, I think mine is caused from my sleeping habits. Thanks Dan for your beard advice 👍 has helped me out tremendously.
Oh man Dan, you hit the ball out of the park with this one, I do have curly beard hairs, and I do sleep rough, I do use oil and butter at night and it seems to help but I never thought of combing too fast, thank you so much for that info, also you are right about heat, I use a wild willies heated beard brush ( hope that's ok, if not tell me a different tool to get) and the heat does help alot with knots, I also don't believe I drink enough water, how much do u think I should drink in a day, thanks so much for your help

I experience this fairly frequently and it is quite annoying, lol. I feel like I am pretty hydrated, so I don't think it is that. Could very well be the cotton pillowcases I use or combing too quick in the morning when I am rushing to leave on time. Haven't used heat yet, so we will see in the future if that helps.
I have a bad habit of obsessing over it when i find them and play around with it and it never fails that hair comes out. I find them all the time in my underbeard. Water is probably the only thing i'm consistent with. Very proud of myself for already doing all the things I need to do to minimize these! 😎 Also, Dan! I purchased a bottle of the Command Mack beard oil and wore it to work for the first time today. Very proud of myself for already doing all the things I need to do to minimize these! 😎 Also, Dan! I purchased a bottle of the Command Mack beard oil and wore it to work for the first time today. I'm loving it! Those random hits of citrus throughout the day uplifted my mood everytime. Thank you!! I just took a shower and the steam was lifting the smell right into my nose. It was awesome 😂
