Second. You sir are the man!! Definitely have my healthiest beard ever thanks to your advice thus far. Just started cutting out the split ends but have been doing everything else for some time. Keep the awesome content coming bro!!!!!
Great Video DanC! I always had split ends in my beard for the longest time. I’d constantly have to trim little bits off to avoid losing the entire hair. After I sat down, and really evaluated my particular situation, the split ends stopped. I broke everything down. I was using the right amount of products, wasn’t causing heat damage, there wasn’t trauma going on etc... and then it hit me like a brick wall. WATER. I wasn’t drinking nearly enough water. I started drinking a gallon of water a day, and literally within a couple weeks I had zero split ends. It was hard at first. To go from drinking 64oz a day to over a gallon is a big change. It isn’t the amount of water that’s hard. You can easily just take a few chugs every hour, and get a gallon down. The hardest part was going to the bathroom non stop. I think I was going to the bathroom every 45min to an hour the first week or so. Extremely annoying. Fast forward now where it’s been almost a year straight of drinking a gallon of water each day, and it’s fantastic. No split ends, beard is soft and healthy... but all the other benefits were what really stand out. No more chapped lips or dry mouth. Overall I’ve been more comfortable, and not getting hot as much. Skin and Hair are healthier. Not to mention all of the benefits you can’t see; like promoting healthy overall organ, and body function. It’s a game changer. What started as a way to just help my beard; had become a lifestyle change. Now, bathroom routine is back to normal, and don’t have to go non stop. I don’t have to think about it. It’s just part of the routine, and I’ll never stop. Caring about my beard has lead to caring more about myself as a whole. Self Care = Self Love.
Dan C Bearded Absolutely! My body loves it. I can definitely feel it if I’m not where I need to be as far as water intake throughout the day. I can’t believe I spent so long being dehydrated. While I was in the weightlifting world, I probably drank 2 gallons+ a day, without knowing it. It was just part of the training. I didn’t have to try to drink a gallon of day because throughout training, it would just happen. After I retired, I must have spent 3-4 years drinking almost no water. I would drink Gatorade, or Soda. Literally that’s it. At my worst I would finish three 12 packs of soda a week + a 12 pack of Gatorade a week. Just straight sugar. Now, I have maybe one soda a week as a guilty pleasure. 99% of my liquid intake is water, and I feel amazing. Not joking fellas, literally within 2 weeks of drinking a gallon of day, split ends, and breakage were GONE. If you care about your beard, and you obviously do if you’re watching this video and part of the best community in the beard game! The Command Army! You’ll make sure you get that water in! Whether you can start drinking a gallon a day right away, or you need to build up to it, do it! Start by drinking half a gallon a day for a week, then 3/4 of a gallon etc... You can do it! And your beard and your body will thank you for it 👍
hey dan i kinda went back to your old videos to binge watch lol. i just wanted to say i really appreciate you still putting out content to this day, it genuinely puts a smile to my face. thank you
Love the approach behind all of your videos, Dan! Thanks for the shoutout. This is one of the many reasons we use only top quality ingredients in all of our products.
Thank you so much The trusted teacher, I have been trimming my split ends lately, I haven’t done it in months, I was one of the people on the beliefs that of you don’t trim your split ends your beard won’t grow! But thank you for clarifying that!
You’re the man Dan C. My first beard was riddled with split ends in the middle of the hair shaft and at the ends. It made my beard look wispy and unhealthy and unfortunately I had to shave completely and start again. I started to drink a lot more water and improved my diet to ensure the hairs come out healthier from within but then I discovered beard oil and quality beard combs like Kent combs which made a huge difference because before that I was using cheap combs that were made in a press and had all those jagged edges that were contributing to and causing more split ends. Great advice from you kind sir!
I’m proof that split ends still grow. I had never trimmed and my beard was looking so full, but I couldn’t get a comb through it. Turns out that I had a ton of split ends. So I did a massive trim and while I lost a lot of length, my beard looks and feels much healthier.
@@DanCBearded Definitely! I do hate when you keep feeling one, but you just can't seem to actually see it though. Last time I did a lengthy inspection, I took a portable flood light into the bathroom, because the lighting kind of sucks 🤣 Wife walked in and went umm....
First! Great video dan. I have somehow managed to only have a few split ends on my beard journey, even before I knew about all these amazing products. Anytime I have gotten a split end I immediately (or as soon as I can) cut it below the split. I won’t do a full trim I’ll just cut the individual hair. Drinking more water and doing the cold rinse has definitely improved the health of my beard as well. Thanks for the info dan!👊🏻
Man, I wish I’d bothered to research beard health before I started growing one. Had a beard for about 4 years now. Always got split ends and knots and would just cut them out. I’d use oil and a boar bristle brush but that is about it. Now I’m actually looking into this and you’ve got a goldmine here. Thanks for all the info. I may be a bit late to this but and will have to have a drastic trim and start again with all this knowledge.
Great video Dan, I know you mentioned in a prior video about hydration and white beard hair. Still drink lots of water though. Just pretty much not combing it so much, and giving it the every 3 month “flyaway trim”. My best to Sam C, and the fam...
Another informative video from the bearded guru/teacher. You reminded me how I need to up my water intake today....I’m slacking! I go in for a light beard trim every 2 months to clean up and get split ends snipped. Other than that, I honestly wouldn’t even know how to spot a split end if I had/have one. *drinks more water*
I haven’t used oils in a while, I been using just the balm. I use the oils to make my own balm, 17g of coconut oil and Shea butter, 6g of beeswax, 3g cocoa butter, 5ml of vit e, 13ml of beard oil I like for the smell. It’s been working for me. Never seen any split ends.
That is good! I would highly recommend oil though. You may not see damage on the hair yet, but the damage would occur at the base because of the skin lacking sebum oil.
@@DanCBearded did not know that. I guess I can implement the oil for now on, I also got #13 from broke donkey company lol both oil and balm, I already had the cologne, smells just like it.

Really enjoy the variety of your content Dan! I don't suffer often with split ends but the 'face fur' certainly lets me know if I'm down on my water game or she doesn't like the carrier oil blend I'm using! Butter at night was a game changer for my beard health! 👏🔥👊🧡🇦🇺
What supplements, vitamins, minerals etc are essential for beard growth and health? I currently take gold Irish seamoss, and Soursop capsules. I also use a seamoss based oil for my beard with tea tree oil, organic coconut oil, and a few more organic additives.
Thank you sir for sharing this knowledge with us, awesome video. So with a nice little trim it’ll help with split ends. But definitely a knot builder! 🧔🏻👊🏼

I would always fix the split ends right away whenever I see it. It does help while healthy growing the beard. Especially when combing or brushing. I am sure you have seen guys in some UA-camrs proves my point that is not the way to start. The second time around I faithfully lightly trim and even split ends and notice it creates good results while growing my yeard the second time around. Also, my beard now knows what I want and where to go when styling as the first time around it wouldn't obey.
Great video buddy. As always. Honestly my vision is so bad it’s hard to tell if I have any split ends so my question for you would be is there any tell tale signs of split ends for fellas like me that can’t see
The most common way you will notice split ends is by finding hairs that fall out and you will see them splitting at the ends. They will fray in multiple directions. You will also feel knots or the hair breaking when you comb
Okay then I should be good! Cause every time I notice hairs fall out I check the ends for the white bulbs to make sure it’s just shedding and I haven’t seen anything like that!👍
Great video Dan, very informative I dont think I have many split ends but how would one go about finding it/them amongst this face forest of mine. Keep up the great content my brotha!!
The most common way you will notice split ends is by finding hairs that fall out and you will see them splitting at the ends. They will fray in multiple directions. You will also feel knots or the hair breaking when you comb
I don't know if you've done one, but a good video topic would be on saving the hairs you have. Many guys want a magic pill to grow new hairs, but keeping the ones you already have is just as important AND POSSIBLE. For example, the topic of this video fits perfectly and many of your others touch on it. Also, how to brush without breaking hairs, how to deal with tangles (I've sacrificed many to remove a stubborn tangle), impact of beard accessories (bands & clips etc), dyes, environmental things (chlorine in pools, low humidity air etc). Does anything, like biotin, make a hair stronger? What is normal strength for a beard hair? BTW I'm surprised at how easily my hairs will break when pulled. I have no idea if it's normal. I'm of the mindset that aside from severe medical issues nothing can make more hair grow other than surgery, but it seems like there are loads of things to protect what you have from breaking off.
Dan - great info as always I think there is a perception issue concerning split ends and beard growth The issue with split ends is that it causes hair to weaken and break so you end up with a shorter hair length. A shorter beard over time - gives the appearance of that growth is slower So while growth stays the same, the length of the beard is negatively impacted due to breakage and such I think it would be helpful to focus on, that while beard growth stays the same, your beard will get shorter because the ends will split and be more prone to breakage For some reason at the beginning of this year, I had a problem with split ends and breakage - I took the steps to correct the problem including trimming about 1.5 inches off the bottom, but now because of breakage the bottom of my beard is a bit more wispy than it was #WizardTips
I've only had a few split ends, but I've had probably double the amount of mid shaft split... But that's maybe 8 to 10... They happen between a half inch and 1 inch from the end... I find them out looks like the hair is kinked at a 90 degree angle... Then I notice a little ball at the bend... Clip and move on, not very often but again probably double the number of splits at the end... Hmm
Thank you for the great information. I love watching your videos that explain how the beard ,skin and body work. Could you or if you already did a video on this explain what makes your hair go terminal I just dont get how it stops growing but if you shave it starts again.
When the hair falls out, check each one. You will notice the splitting. You can also feel a textural difference. Where there are split ends, there are likely knots too
Dan! You’re wisdom is very much appreciated my brotha💯! I’ve often wondered about this topic and I thought maybe it did slow down growth. Just wondering how you go about trimming your ends? Do you use trimmers or scissors?
If you gently run your hand along your beard you may feel something that Isolde slightly rough. Sometimes they stick out. I used to have more split ends if I used any warm to hot water or used a blow dryer. I ha e far fewer now. I have found the most split ends on the side of my face that I sleep on.
Is it just me or everyone, I have multiple different colors of beard hair ranging from black, to brown, to gray. My brown beard hairs never split at the end, they split in the middle multiple times without breaking almost as if you take multiple strands of fiber closed off at each end and the center is loose strands.
Fellow calico beardman here - I have white, blonde, copper, ginger, brown and black in my beard in pretty much equal proportions. I find that I get only split ends rather than split middles like you, but oddly they appear to happen most with the black hairs. I honestly can't remember ever getting a split end with the lighter colours. The different colours in my beard seem to shed at the same length and same rate however (when you're a bald-face no-one ever tells you that beards do in fact molt constantly!). I balm and comb every day, if that makes any difference.
Dan C : Thanks for good info. I feel silly for asking this but, I'm never really sure if I have split ends or not. How do you recognize a split end visually?
Hey Dan, great video! I was curious if you knew of any beard product scents that are similar to menthol? Something particularly minty or refreshing like eucalyptus would be great. I currently own Bad Dog's peppermint rosemary and that stuff is nice. I was wondering if there's anything else I could my hands on.
Question first. Can you do a video about the whispy's or thin see thru hair at the bottom of a longer beard (mine is a little longer than yours but gets see thru at the bottom)? Do we keep it or cut it? Split ends? I got them here and there, not many enough worth a trim tho.
Your beard is naturally going to thin out as it gets longer, because the backing hairs do not grow as long. It is totally personal preference, but I always trim the transparency away
@@DanCBearded Dan, I grabbed the barber scissors and took off an 1 inch. Now it's an 8 finger beard but it sure looks fuller for sure. (did mess up on one side because I couldn't grab some hair and out of haste I grabbed it and pulled it down, snip and up it bounced lol)! Now I have some transparency a bit on one side. Oh well, my bad. I do want to thank you for all your videos. I have changed my ways the last few weeks. Now I only use balm for occasions, I use pine tar soap for stripping, only co wash once a week and my beard has never felt healthier. Thanks a bunch.
Hello Dan! I would like to aks for your suggestion. During the day i have a beard ponytail style, similiar di Shavo Odjan from System ofa Down. But i saw a lot of split ends, now started to trim them. Do you think i should trim periodcally for the health of the beard or, considered my beard style, split ends dont impact overall on the look and i should avoid trim them? I ask you because i have a veru slow grow rate, so every cut i so painful ;) Thanks for your great content, hoping for an answer.
Excessive dry combing your beard shreds your beard hair and splits them, especially grey beards like mine. It wreaks hellacious havoc on your beard hairs and splits the heck out of them - been there done that!
I have a couple of spit ends rn at the moment and i have hairs were they are tangley with other hairs and i use a comb to take them out dan c bearded but i see breakage in the sink
Dan c bearded I cut my split ends and I wash my beard with Luke warm water or cool I put my beard oil in and I still have split ends is have to cut them every day every 5 minutes before it wasn't like that.
I would have terrible beard split ends if I hadn’t found the bearded community wisdom like DanC, et al on uTube in 2017. I’m going on two years of my bearded journey and I rarely find beard hair split ends due to following the beard care regimens suggested by DanC and others. This is a great topic and keep’em coming. Two thumbs down 👎🏼 on this video. What’s not to like about it? This video is purely informational based on science. Very curious!! 🤔
That's not really saying what all is good oil God bless you ever tithing and order in which you like you should give people more of a variety idea on what else they can use besides your husky beard oil

BTW I'm surprised at how easily my hairs will break when pulled. I have no idea if it's normal.
I'm of the mindset that aside from severe medical issues nothing can make more hair grow other than surgery, but it seems like there are loads of things to protect what you have from breaking off.
That's a great idea, thank you buddy! Writing it down now
Great Video!!!
Thanks!
My beard has fallen victim to split ends when it was thicker but since i cut I’d down fewer show up. Just only on the bottom of my neck
That sounds about right. Longer the hair, the greater chance for split ends
I had to come back to this. Under my neck idk what’s up but my hair curls up under my neck and mostly all them hairs is split.
thank you
You’re welcome!
Just found this video. Glad I did. How often is common for us to get split ends if we are taking care of our beards properly?
With some length, it is going to happen to everyone. Not extremely common, but you will have a few every few months
My question is does blowdrying and straightening cause splitting?
Not if done correctly, no. It’s actually better for the beard. ua-cam.com/video/RmW1Ut5OPI0/v-deo.htmlsi=-PvmEUd9BY1M6j87
@@DanCBearded thanks for answering and dropping the link.
Dan - great info as always
I think there is a perception issue concerning split ends and beard growth
The issue with split ends is that it causes hair to weaken and break so you end up with a shorter hair length. A shorter beard over time - gives the appearance of that growth is slower
So while growth stays the same, the length of the beard is negatively impacted due to breakage and such
I think it would be helpful to focus on, that while beard growth stays the same, your beard will get shorter because the ends will split and be more prone to breakage
For some reason at the beginning of this year, I had a problem with split ends and breakage - I took the steps to correct the problem including trimming about 1.5 inches off the bottom, but now because of breakage the bottom of my beard is a bit more wispy than it was #WizardTips
Absolutely well said! I touched on that a bit in the video, and you're right that it is super important
Hey brotha, if you search beard terminal length, you should find my video 👊
@@DanCBearded will do thank you👍💯
How do you know if you have split ends? Are they visible in the mirror or how would someone go about checking for them?
When the hair falls out, check each one. You will notice the splitting. You can also feel a textural difference. Where there are split ends, there are likely knots too
Thank you very much. Your videos and the information you make easily available have been a great help to me.
@@jonathanmullins2821 🙏
Does strapping the beard with bands and such for those that use that style cause split ends?
They can if not done properly
@@DanCBearded Any video guides on how to do them safely?
@@susanacostadesa4445 use ties that are made for hair, such as the goody brand. Make sure they aren’t too tight. Never use rubber.
Dan! You’re wisdom is very much appreciated my brotha💯! I’ve often wondered about this topic and I thought maybe it did slow down growth. Just wondering how you go about trimming your ends? Do you use trimmers or scissors?
I trim the specific hairs with scissors
Great vid. But I always have the same question after split ends videos. Are they visible? How do you know if you have them?
They are, they look like the video thumbnail. A single strand of hair frays or splits, ussually at the end
If you gently run your hand along your beard you may feel something that Isolde slightly rough. Sometimes they stick out. I used to have more split ends if I used any warm to hot water or used a blow dryer. I ha e far fewer now. I have found the most split ends on the side of my face that I sleep on.
@@JonathanGrandt well said!
Off topic question. Have you every used black label beard oils? If so what do you think? Quality, scent and in beard feel?
I have not tried them, sorry!
Thanks for your time.
Why the cold rinse ?

So is it better to apply the oil/butter after a shower then apply cold water ?
@@salomonlouissaint1710 no. End your shower with cold water, dry, then apply oil
Really ? Thank you !
Is it just me or everyone, I have multiple different colors of beard hair ranging from black, to brown, to gray. My brown beard hairs never split at the end, they split in the middle multiple times without breaking almost as if you take multiple strands of fiber closed off at each end and the center is loose strands.
Very interesting observation!
If u strim ur ends will that mess up and make ur beard look bad .. I spent an hour cutting my ends now I see more ?
Cremo? Is it any good
No, unfortunately
Split ends and knots are the worst !
i can’t stop fidgeting with it until it falls off and i end up with patchy spots
Yeah, they are not good
What is your opinion of Mountaineer Brand beard products
I have a decently recent review for them, check it out brotha 👊
Hi bro it's ok to brush my Beard every morning with some beard hair falls out or not 😢
Yes, that is fine and it is normal for beard hairs to fall out
@@DanCBearded thanks 👍 man alot
Dan C : Thanks for good info. I feel silly for asking this but, I'm never really sure if I have split ends or not. How do you recognize a split end visually?
You will normally first find them in the sink and they will be split or frayed at the end. You can also feel splits when you comb
Thx!
Tons of them! That is one of my favorite scent profiles. Mackinac by Detroit grooming, Pacific by burtons beard oil, and others!

I would do the regular trims 🤝
@@DanCBearded Thank you for the answer!
Great job getting straight to the point and info based on facts and science. There's no splitting hairs with you Dan. 😀
Haha well played sir
My beard still grew a lot while I had some split ends in the past it just makes your beard ratty and frizzy/fuzzy looking
Yup! That would be a good summary of the video
Dan C Bearded - yeah I can grow the nastiest split end fuzz ball better than anybody - been there done that!
Excessive dry combing your beard shreds your beard hair and splits them, especially grey beards like mine. It wreaks hellacious havoc on your beard hairs and splits the heck out of them - been there done that!
No split ends here kids!
