@@spearmintflavoured1546 She is not surprised for him being well-thought and respectful. She is just stating a fact. And the way she states the facts is by referring to him as 'the guy with the tattoos'.
@Black Knight Fool no, homosexuality is falling in love and /or having sex with a man whereas 21st C masculinity is about broadening the definition of what being a man is.
Theoretically, I agree, BUT the notion that there is one truth and that is what we should strive to uncover in our debates and dialogues, is, depending on what you are talking about, often false and things are usually much more complex. For instance, there is no 'truth' to what 'masculinity' really is (or 'femininity' for that matter). Ideals and norms of masculinity are different across the world and from person to person - they are socially constructed and highly variable 'truths' . A person who simply asserts that 'men are/should x', or 'women are/should x' while thinking they are brave to speak the 'truth' and not bow to the alter of PCness, is probably kidding themselves.
@@bear_square543 Masculinity and femininity aren't merely social constructs. A person's interests and behaviour can change dramatically depending on how much testosterone or oestrogen your body produces. Merely declaring that truth is subjective doesn't change the basic facts of biology I'm afraid.
@@evan2173 But then of course the social construct argument gets stretched way beyond reason and is frequently used as a way to explain behaviour. Why are young men more aggressive and more inclined to physical confrontation than young women? "Because it's the way they have been socialised. They are following masculine norms they have learnt from their parents and television and media". That's a very narrow viewpoint. Consider also that aggression is of course the number one trait that academics in gender studies associate with the masculinity construct (whatever that is meant to be). The irony is that men are socialised to be less aggressive, not more. Just as a final point I have to ask -why is it necessary to be smug and patronising at the end? All you have done is regurgitate the viewpoint of scholars representing 1 or 2 disciplines that see the world and everything in it as solely determined by gender discourses. Why not just be courteous.

This is a stunningly fair and balanced approach to Jordan Peterson and his work. I never expected to see something like this come from the Guardian and it’s made me very hopeful. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
If this is what the sorely needed olive branch looks like then you're on the right track. Thought it less and less likely i'd ever do this but, 'liked'
I'd like an olive branch from the Peterson side too, but...I doubt one is forthcoming. If it is I'l like that video, and not the endless 'DESTROYS, OWNS, SHUTS DOWN, SHOCKS, FLATTENS' videos.
Actually, a pretty reasonable video with an interesting topic, and a fair treatment of Jordan Peterson. I'm interested in watching more, the only criticism I have is the music is a bit too loud and aggressive. Surprised to see something that isn't just hateful, dishonest feminist screeching from the Guardian.
"Take responsibility" is code for "Do what women demand, because a man's role is to be a slave". The difference between feminists and traditionalists is that traditionalists pat men on the head. The objectives are the same. Feminists are starting to realize this and therefore starting to go easy on traditionalists. Some are even dropping the feminist label and identifying as traditionalists themselves. If you want to test whether someone really does respect men or not, ask what that person thinks about a man who refuses to become a husband, father, dutiful provider, etc. Peterson called those men "pathetic weasels" before he back-pedalled on the choice of language.
@Juliana Silva Okay so I'm a woman but I'm a huge fan of Jordan Peterson and I've watched as many of his interviews and debates as I could find. Not ONCE did I see him make a discriminatory comment about/towards women. He has pointed out biological and psychological differences between men and women, but that's not misogyny, it's just truth. Men and women aren't the same. So please cite your source that Jordan Peterson is a "misogynist" please.
@Juliana Silva Feminism is hateful screeching cancer hence it is predictable that people will call it hateful screeching cancer. Nothing sad about that. The only sad thing is that there are still people dumb enough (hint: you) to defend it after all we have seen. DIAF
@@jaromor8808 What Jaroslav is saying is that women will not freely give him their body when and where he wishes and that is tantamount to abuse in his world
Freeze Peach Proven liar? Would you care to actually back that up? Also your name... Clearly you like to take the piss out of people who value free speech and use it as a reason to say things that others may like. You might not like them for doing this, but it’s kinda essential that you not seek to revoke this right. Never justify something which will inevitably be turned on you in the future. No one is scared of feminists per se, people simply despise the message that they often espouse, that men are the oppressors of women just by being men.
If this is the approach the Guardian will have on masculinity... congrats. Feels like things can change. Men are not the enemy. I'm happy to see this was not a hit piece. Just one thing "polemicist" is not accurate.
Trust me, this is what most people are like. The 'culture wars' is one big hot online mess with very little prevalence in the real world. It's a waste of time basically.
I've gotta say, I find Amrani totally refreshing. I first saw her when she recently covered the UFC and I came into the video with my defenses high feeling that she was going to be another media member with sneaky motives and trying to skew the narrative around a topic. However, she was open and inquisitive without any polarization judgement one way or another. This video (while maybe taking some video snip-its that portraying Peterson in a less than flattering light) was much the same. Great content keep it going!
I'd love to see such open-minded people represent journalism in today's society. Our media should be a window for the world's different views making us help see each other more accurately but instead, it contributes to the silofication of our views. Great going, Iman! Guardian has got a new subscriber.
Finally! A series discussing the problems modern men face in todays culture and not riding on the toxic masculinity craze. Gotta give props to the journalist and the guardian for this one 👍

I felt a sense of relief watching this. The debate over the past few years have essentially silenced a lot of men on this topic. To be able to talk about this without being labeled and viciously attacked is essential to a healthy debate and a healthy society. So thank you!
And why would you feel relief when men will still be silenced and only "heard" in niche videos like this one and never be an acceptable opinion for those who have powerful voices ? (say actors, musicians, etc) which is who need to talk about this?
Other than the obvious half-funny statement "half muslim, half white" part lol White is not a religion and Muslim is not a race. I think this documentary is exactly what young men and women need! He attracts attention because a lot of what he says does reflect on people's lives, one of his points in his book which is just brilliant is paraphrasing here "don't compare yourself with others, compare yourself today against yourself yesterday" this is how you see improvements and me applying this on my daily life, I've seen big improvements and daily progress.
It's not technically incorrect. I can be half-white, half-asian, half-buddhist, half-Christian, depending on how much you consider religion as something you actively participate in or something that's a cultural identity. They are "halves" on a different axis.
Simon Manikkam Exactly. Why do the "producers" of certain videos think that we can concentrate on the message with a music track competing for our attention. When you have a typical conversation with someone do you pull out your mini bluetooth speaker and play some tunes to "enhance" the conversation? I don't.
The fact that she has to even say it speaks volumes about the culture of The Guardian, I guess for most of her peers the truth comes way down the list of important things.
Haha Guardian a bit late to the sensible debate. But better late than never. I would respectfully point out that the c-16 issue was a freedom of speech concern and not a transgender issue.
You know the sad thing? Being a woman you can easily say the same things that if were to be said by a man would attract online bully crowd, may be even lead to job loss. You will on the other hand be called independent and powerful!
As a man, and an admirer of JP, I appreciate this piece. I feel Amrani has a level of compassion combined with journalistic integrity that is vanishingly rare these days, and makes me want to listen to what she has to say. Thank you.

That kid was very wise for his age - being aware of those around you. Awareness is a big part of being a man, you need to be able to respond to things in your environment appropriately so you always need to be aware (not paranoid) of what's going on
"Many men don't know what they are" - ain't all of us like that though? You grow up, dreams get crushed and you don't know how did you get here and what to do?
This is JP three years ago. Much has changed since then, and he seems to be more strident and less compelling. His "dancing" around his religiosity drove me nuts, and he is NOT a flag-bearer for 70 year old feminist me. Women mostly don't want to dominate - just fairness and equal opportunity, in my experience.
As a woman I find a lot of Jordan Peterson content valuable as a woman too. I find that society now expects me as a woman too behave and feel like a victim to gender, instead of a powerful agent for change regardless of gender. I don't always agree with his personal views, but his perspectives on responsibility, psychology, meaning, and life have been practical and valuable for me.
This video. Pros: Fair look on the topic of masculinity and political correctness. Not a hit piece. Cons: That intro. The music is too loud and distracting.
Great series - from a father-husband-brother-son-colleague trying to figure out what's changed and how to adapt. I can't speak for all guys, but I need this kind of stuff from The Guardian and journalists like it. It might also be worth saying that I'm a professional environmentalist and consider myself a (somewhat contrarian) compassionate liberal but with a serious dose of pragmatic moderatism, but have struggled to read the Guardian for a few years now (although I dip back in now and again... maybe in hope?!). This has DEFINITELY brought me back. PLEASE keep it up!!
traditional masculinity IS masculinity. Providing, protecting, taking what's yours, etc. These are traits men aspire to have. These are the traits men admire within other men.
Jordan Peterson's figure might be provocative but, at the same time interesting to appreciate. If there's something I like most about him, he doesn't care about what people say whether he was or politically INCORRECT, frankly, he says what the others think.
Literally watched a Jordan Peterson video the other day where he talks about the contrast between his college psychology lectures (~80% women) and his previous tours (~80% men) so it's a fair point. Leave the cheap point scoring attempts to people that have no logical argument to make. We have plenty. The real question is why there are more women as he becomes more mainstream - because while western women may be set up by society to have more advantages they are more miserable than ever before in history and questioning why.
I went to his show and it actually surprised me too lol. But since UA-cam is mostly male I guess we don't realize. Many women I know who I've introduced to JBP quite like him. He manages to get the yearning for both men *and* women in a comfortable environment at his live shows. If women generally prefer people over things, and men generally things over people. You'd notice men will do the online thing in isolation, women will do the live show gathering or the book in higher amount.
@@LeethLee1 You are right, in fact in the video I mentioned he says there is clearly something going on because women are more interested in people (hence the gender imbalance in psychology) but it's not 80% women at his shows :)

It would be a better journalism if The Guardian can cover on South Korean’s changes on modern masculinity and their portrayal of ideal masculinity. South Korean’s movies had changed their portrayal of 1980s ‘brute/strength/patriarchy’ masculinity to 2000s more feminist and intricate masculinity...as does in reality...and this changes are acceptable to society without being demeaning and threatening to the concept of masculinity in modern South Korea.
What would be better for the series is if they interviewed male psychologists and sociologists separately with these interviews of these male individuals. We would like to see what the academic community and mental health community says about what they understand about these issues to compare to what these male individuals were saying. Perhaps academia and the medical community are unplugged or they can comment on the over arching trends of the male conversation to give weight to these individual anecdotal stories. One thing to look at is the impact of urban community's music, art, and protest world on the male culture conversation through media and the news. This culture seems to have a big impact on the male conversation with young men but this becomes a problem since this urban world suffers from a huge absence of fathers in their world. The world of the Cosby Show is a fantasy while the world of becoming a statistic is inevitable. We need to be able to hold our male friends, cry over a hard day, be fearful of a hard path to start down, but all we are allowed to do is Man Up. Well sorry but I refuse to be that type of Man. I just hope the media's presentation of Man catches up soon enough.
I completely agree with you Damian. Especially in the latter part. I was having a rough day today and really felt like hugging one of my guy friends and crying for a few minutes. I refrained from doing so in order to keep things civil and "ordinary". It just felt extremely painful having to hold in my emotional turmoil in order for my guy friends to feel comfortable. I long to gave a safe environment where I can be open about myself without being reprimanded for not being "manly".
Brilliant. The hatred spewed towards Peterson is pretty shocking at times. These vicious character assassinations need to stop and we all need to have intellectual discussions and debates with better spirit.

I’m a man, I read the comments and felt quite disappointed. Why do men always insist the minority and women to listen and understanding. I personally never see men like Jordan Peterson did that to any other women. I understood Guardian try to see things in different perspective ... but I honestly think it’s pointless.
There's a reason she talked about Jordan Peterson in the first episode, it's so we can all comeback for more...why ? Because JP sells...by episode 4 it will be totally different.
Grow up. I'm not a fan of Peterson but I don't think it's okay for the mainstream media to slander people and misrepresent them solely based on their political beliefs(as is frequently the case) and so I was impressed by the Guardian's honesty. It's people like you who are unwilling to engage in a dialogue and just resort to childish insults that have held back the reasonable left.@2manynegativewaves
A woman doing a masculinity series is like me writing a book, The Third Trimester Of Your Pregnancy & What To Expect. Or me, a white guy writing a book about being black (Shaun King & Rachel Dolezal exempted of course).
From what I see in society, right-wing men tend to have toxic masculinity issues, though they seem to be in denial about it, and left-wing men tend to have more of a modern masculinity. There's always a few exceptions to the rule, but this is what I've noticed in society.

Iman is spot on with her attitude about political correctness.
@@bear_square543 ?
@@bear_square543 I agree with you, and I think she would too. Did you watch the whole video?
