Fun fact since you pointed out how integral the piano is to Hamilton - the pianist in the live show is ALSO the conductor. He's conducting the orchestra and playing the entire piano part simultaneously, in real time, it's nuts.
Worth mentioning too that they had a keyboard programmer (one guy) who used software with multiple keyboard parts in the understage rig, Even the percussionist had a small keyboard.
LMM wrote the musical and play, but the musical director (Alex Lacamoire) that composed should be given credit for the amazing sounds and music. I like your reactions to the songs so far.
I’ve read that this was written as an homage to the early 00’s Ashanti/ja rule jams, hence why LMM does a bit of a gravelly effect on his verse later in the song. Which is made all the more fun by the fact that they both covered this song on the Hamilton Mixtape 🙃
3:55 the pizzicato you talked about on the off beat matches the opening "hey..hey..hey" backing vocals at the start of this song and satisfied. The call backs and repeated melody lines throughout all the songs are incredible. It's almost a game to spot and match them up
I love the transitions between the songs for Hamilton, and this is my fav! Those 'Hey.'..Hey's from Winter's ball and then right into the Hey...Heys in this one :). Plus I think Beyonce's Countdown may have influenced this song.
Yeah there are definitely parts influenced by Countdown, it's more obvious if you listen back to back. I also heard Lin Manuel kept in his ja rule impression mainly because it made Philippa laugh :)
This is when my Hamilton the Musical book comes in handy! If I remember correctly, Lin Manuel wrote this song on the train home after leaving a party early.
Close- it was 'Wait for It'. The only original line left form 'Helpless' is 'This one's mine'- Lin's got the original Helpless up on his Soundclound. Totally different from he final one!
Great work man, been watching all your Hamilton reviews. One thing you may want to consider - and this is me nitpicking because Im such a Ham fan - is that sometimes you pause JUST as its about to go into an important lyric or sound, so is there a feature that allows you to go back 2 seconds when you hit play again? Also, with this song in particular it goes right into Satisfied which is basically like PB and J. Need to be done together! Keep up the good work!
This is a big part of why I'm hoping he films a reaction video to the movie on Disney+ as well! I don't know much about music, so it's really interesting to hear someone geek out about the intricacies of building the songs and melodies. But gotta say as an actor and storyteller, that part of me gets mild frustration--half the time I'm thinking "No! Don't stop there!" lol Legit the acting and set design and costuming and staging all add so much to the experience that even if you've listened to the whole show, watching it is another level and it is still very new. Hope he does, I love those reactions! *especially* from people who appreciate the craft and artistry in the choices.
When you finally WATCH the musical, you should do it in two parts, live so your followers can share it with you. As amazing as the music is, seeing the performance tied in with the music is going to blow you away.
This is the song I walk around the house singing. I'm listening to your playlist for the third time. So excited to watch your reaction to it. Listening to your music too. Can't believe I haven't heard of you until now.
thomas kinkaid i think is the name of the music director, he and lin manuel wrote everything, there's a fantatic pbs documentary bts with lin manuel as he's putting the show together, it's quite good.
I don’t know why but these videos are so satisfying to watch!! I love seeing your reaction to everything it’s so cool!! 😂🌻🌊 I can see you like literally feel the music idkk it makes me happyyyy
Some people react to the lyric videos that are filmed with stars and lyrics over the top. They don’t seem to get blocked as much? And one song per video even better chance I think. Or just pop the video up here and there? Just suggestions from videos I’ve seen up for months.
Plagal or "Amen" Cadence is what you were looking for I-IV-I, the ending happens to be a I-IV⁵-I which includes a Picardy Third (key of F, 3rd; Fa, Mi, Re, Mi,)
I would really appreciate you reacting to the covers by Postmodern Jukebox. "Creep" feat. Haley Reinhart is just crazy and their versions of "Wannabe" and "All about that bass" (trio) are not how you would expect to hear these songs :)
Fun fact since you pointed out how integral the piano is to Hamilton - the pianist in the live show is ALSO the conductor. He's conducting the orchestra and playing the entire piano part simultaneously, in real time, it's nuts.
woah.
He also is the music director(Alex Lacamoire), he helped Lin write/arrange/orchestrate all of it.
Worth mentioning too that they had a keyboard programmer (one guy) who used software with multiple keyboard parts in the understage rig, Even the percussionist had a small keyboard.
This happens in the majority of musicals since pianos drive the entire musical components of a musical...
Yes, Alex Lacamoire is a genius
I really like your technical analysis of the music. It totally helps to appreciate the pieces even more, and why we like what we like in them. Thanks!
My pleasure!

Alex Lacamoire is everything! He's such a big reason why Hamilton is so amazing!
YES!!!!! Lac is astoundingly talented. I highly recommend his episodes on the Hamilcast. Mind blowing.
Fun fact- Lac is also deaf! What he's done with this & other musicals is friggen mind-blowing!!
You have to do "Satisfied!" THE BARS!
Coming soon!!

Plagal (church) Cadence goes from IV to I, which makes sense since they are in the church at the wedding.
THANK YOU!!!! I knew it had a name!!!!
It wasn’t created until after Eliza and Alex got married
@Laura Martin-Falla wow
“I like how this guy wrote the music” yes AND he directed, casted, helped with choreographed and STARED IN IT!!!! Lol
Soooooo good
I love when you break down ANYTHING from Hamilton 😍 You here absolutely everything I hear. 🖤
Glad to hear it!!
Thanks Helpless is my favorite.
Dude I love this song! This is like my go to song in the morning.

Can't wait until you see the musical and hopefully react after that!
It did take him years to write this. He said “My Shot” alone took a full year to write.
Wow
Ending on the fourth is the Plagal Cadence!
YES
Has to be satisfied next!
Coming soon!
"the boy is mine" from brandy and monica
No key change at the end btw
My b
Maybe you're thinking of a deceptive cadence where you expect to go to a specific chord like I or V but you actually go to a IV or vi chord?
maybe!!
This song is right before “Satisfied”, you should listen to them in a sequence. It will make more sense.
YOU MUST DO SATISFIED AFTER THIS ONE.
Coming soon
A lot of concepts are taken from Beyoncé music as well :) countdown by Beyoncé
oh wow cool
You should react to the Jimmy Fallon and the Cast Zoom version of this. It made the quarantine much more tolerable.
Can u do say no to this ?
??
It’s a song on Hamilton.
Ahh my bad hahaha
Can you react to new cover of shawn mendes - “can’t take my eyes off you” in the live lounge?
Yep!
Hey first like today!!! At least that's what my phone says
Lol nice!
I would really appreciate you reacting to the covers by Postmodern Jukebox. "Creep" feat. Haley Reinhart is just crazy and their versions of "Wannabe" and "All about that bass" (trio) are not how you would expect to hear these songs :)
You know how he wrote it? He took seven years to do it, that's how. ;)
wow
can you do a reaction video to the movie?'
I will on Patreon.com/jacobrestituto - and then snips on here
