As a psychologist who has diagnosed and made treatment recommendations to 34% of the UA-cam viewership but also dropped out freshman yr of junior college, I can appreciate the persuasive detail work in such an informative comment.
The history bounding group I'm in has lots of people using zip ties in historical corsets and stays too, I mean, baleen is really similar and many corsets also used cording or quilting instead of bones at all. Unless you're actually tightlacing yourself to death there's not really a need to have unbreakable bones or eyelets or whatever. :) The fabric needs to be strong enough and not elastic, that's about it.
A corset actually isn’t really used for the waist - it works more like a bra. The shape of the corset is bigger on the top and bottom to create the illusion of the waist being smaller, not actually pulling into the waist to make it smaller. tight lacing wasn’t actually very common in times of corsetry being the main female shapewear undergarment. Also yes many modern seamstresses use zip ties but there is also fake boning channels used for the same purpose. The issue with zip ties is that they don’t warm up with the heat of the body in order to shape to the person wearing it. Sorry for the long message I just wanted to over clarify 😂
This is actually very incorrect. Many corsets are used to shrink the waist, although not all of them had that as their main use. Many of them either minimized the bust, enhanced it, shrunk the waist, created a new shape, or emphasized the hips. I would also say that not many modern seamstresses use zip ties. Its a sign that you don't know what you are doing, plastic boning is just as cheap. The issue you brought up with the heat of the body is also inaccurate. Many corsets used metal boning or even whalebone, and neither of those heated up with the body to conform to the shape. The shaping comes from the pattern pieces, and the boning is their to stabilize it.
Ryan B Moore whalebone actually does bend and conform to the body with heat- it’s why synthetic whalebone is used these days. And while corsets did use things like spiral steel and flat steel boning, you’d mostly find it at the centre front and centre back, to reinforce the busk and the lacing eyelets/grommets. You’re absolutely right that most of the shaping and support comes from the shape of the others pieces though. Modern corsetry is a bit different, but it’s also mostly crap, so who cares about that. Shapeless tunes that look awful and aren’t particularly comfortable. No thank you! And the OP was correct in that the main purpose of a corset is to support, and that tight lacing wasn’t terribly common (and pretty much nonexistent for everyone below the elite class). Corsets do reduce the waist by a little, bit it’s mostly through shaping and support. And a lot of the waist reduction was illusion, through structure, padding, and just plain good tailoring. And (traditional/historical styles of) corsets are so much better than bras! So much more comfortable, especially if you’re like me and are disabled from a spinal condition. Godsends, I swear. My other back braces are super noticeable under clothing, but corsets work great. And they support my big boobs without pain, because they distribute the weight evenly across the entire torso, instead of a narrow band across the ribs and back, and steps that dig in. Ugh. Bras suck. I wish we’d never moved away from corsets.
Maybe you’re speaking of modern corsets, but original corsets were very much made to manipulate the entire shape of a woman’s bodice. Certain decades and centuries are defined by the trending “shape” of a woman’s body. “Victorian Bodice”, “Edwardian Bodice”, “Elizabethan Bodice”. In many cases the small waists created by the corsets worked hand in hand with the popular hip and skirt shape of the time. Modern corsets are more of less useless and for decoration - women don’t want a large piece of fabric covering their entire midriff just to support their breasts. That’s why we all love spanx.
I laughed when he said she’s very good at explaining what she’s doing, when half the fun of her videos is that she describes things in such odd ways. The joke in many of her comment sections is the idea of “imagine coming here thinking it is an actual tutorial.” I follow both Luke and Micarah by the way, because I love both of their content.
If hautelemode and micarah were friends in a movie, they’d probably be the dynamic duo that met in art college with completely different outlooks in life and objectives, but somehow came together under weird circumstances and become best friends. Okay, about the zip ties: It is absolutely a thing many people do. It's WAY cheaper than synthetic whalebone / plastic boning. A lot of historical costumers use it for their rococo stays! (Been there, done that.) Works just as well 😁

BUT! she does shout out other youtubers that have done similar videos that are actual tutorials, or videos where she does a better job of explaining how she got around making a garment. her videos are meant to entertain and highlight the arduous job of clothes-making. plus the various little side quests she goes on while taking breaks are so much fun to watch. i would love for you to watch a few more videos of hers on here! this was the collab i didn't know i needed lol.

Uhhh I don't think metal has a low enough melting point to conform to the heat of the body
I’m very protective of Micarah Tewers because she’s a treasure to protect at all costs... so I’m so happy that Luke likes her too! ❤️
Micarah Tewers is insanely talented
Exactly! She can sing beautifully aswell 🥰
Her measurements bruh
I love it
And talentedly insane
@@diamondcentury21 I love Micarah but singing is not one of her strong suits
If hautelemode and micarah were friends in a movie, they’d probably be the dynamic duo that met in art college with completely different outlooks in life and objectives, but somehow came together under weird circumstances and become best friends. They’re different, but their differences make their strengths together to rule the worrrrldddd!
Luke: *pronounces "Haute" wrong*
Me: *grumbles*
Luke: *pronounces "Micarah" wrong*
Me: *grumbles*
Luke: "I'm just gonna start not saying words in videos because I don't know how to pronounce them and you guys give me so much flak for it."
Me: *ashamed* I'm....I'm so sorry. Carry on, Beautiful!
OMG I JUST THOUGHT ABOUT HOW CUTE IT WOULD BE IF YOU REACTED TO MICARAH’S VIDEOS UGH LUKE YOUR MIND, SO POWERFULL
ME TOO
a crossover i never knew i needed
She would be fun to have on the podcast to talk about her creative process and her passion for costume design
Okay, about the zip ties:
It is absolutely a thing many people do. It's WAY cheaper than synthetic whalebone / plastic boning.
A lot of historical costumers use it for their rococo stays! (Been there, done that.)
Works just as well 😁
"Okay I'm obsessed" - literally every person discovering Micarah
She's legit the best
Tbh I am surprised Micarah doesn't model professionally she has the height is quite striking.
Or sing, she’s amazing
but she is modelling and singing professionally! she's using her beauty and skills for her profession: UA-cam
Im living for Luke living for Micarah just living
"she's good at explaining what she's doing"
*Me knowing full well Micarah measures things in phone cord lengths*
"I agree!" 😂
My eyes were SLITS when I first started watching this. I shouldn’t have been suspicious given that you’d have to be a shell of a human in order to dislike Micarah. ❤️
The Queen of "the Width of a Snicker's bar" and Luke in a video together? This is a fever dream!!!
Edit: why did she have to pick the Jiffy pop dress, thoooo
I love her creativity but her editing gives me motion sickness.
hahaha same and bless her, her house stresses me out with a christmas tree up all year :')
Yeah a lot of us diy gals use zip ties they have their issues but they usually work out
"THAT IS MODERN FASHION DESIGN AND I LIKE IT!"
This *perfectly* describes what discovering Micarah Tewers is like.
"I feel like I'm learning a lot of things that have nothing to do with clothing construction." Micarah in a nutshell.
I literally love her so much she seems like the nicest person
i love micarah! she's so chaotic and creative. she's also very self-aware. she mentions in various videos that she's not really making tutorials, and you probably shouldn't be following her instructions because she's not only kind of vague with them, but also she uses just about anything in hand for measurements. BUT! she does shout out other youtubers that have done similar videos that are actual tutorials, or videos where she does a better job of explaining how she got around making a garment.
her videos are meant to entertain and highlight the arduous job of clothes-making. plus the various little side quests she goes on while taking breaks are so much fun to watch.
i would love for you to watch a few more videos of hers on here! this was the collab i didn't know i needed lol.
“Very good at explaining what she is doing.”
Are we talking about the same person? I love Micarah’s channel, but are we getting the same instructions.
Hailey Robins Thats what I thought.
I love micarah.... she is the perfect blend of Disney princess, stand up comedian, country bumpkin and talented designer/seamstress, all rolled together with the chaotic energy of a high energy dog that desperately needs a walk. She is a QUEEN.♡
Micarah and Bernadette Banner are the gems of my recommendations from 2019/2020
She looks like a mixture of Hilary duff and that lady from mean girls
She has a video where she dress as characters from Rachel McAdams movies, Regina George included.
She looks EXACTLY like rachel mcadams
"Gretchen stop trying to make fetch happen" I'm going to watch mean girls.
That lady from mean girls??? Lmaooo have some rEsPecT
with a bit of Jeri Ryan of Seven of Nine Star Trek fame.
This crossover of my two favorite fashion-related youtubers is maybe the best thing that's happened all year.
Oh yes, I was waiting for this! I adore her!
“It’s looks very bridal. Like the bride of satan.” What about the bride of Beetlejuice? It looks a lot like Lydia’s wedding dress.
I recently discovered her and I find her to be hilarious. You need to see her painstakingly recreating Ariana Grande's dress.
i love this girl sm im so glad shes getting the recognition she deserves
WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE
literally never thought these two different channels i watch would come together
This girl is from another planet and everytime I see one of her videos - I want to visit this planet
Micarah is incredible!! Most people stop at her being very pretty and judge her as that only, but if they only looked at her videos they would realize how incredibly talented, sassy, smart and creative she is!! Her sewing abilities are just INCREDIBLE I am extremely jealous
Him: "There's a Donald Trump ad playing"
Subtitles: "There's a dog playing"
i just discovered her a couple month ago and fell in love with her personality
Luke laughing at Micarah's "this is silly" note is THE UA-cam moment I've been waiting for
YES YES YES YES YES HE REACTED TO OUR DISNEY PRINCESS
I was so worried this dude was gonna flame my girl lol
Micarah Tewers is one of the most talented people on UA-cam-not only just in fashion and costume making, but also comedy!
I hope this is positive because Micarah Tewers is one of the most hilarious people
Fun fact: a lot of home made corset makers use zip ties because they work a lot like whale bone.
no they don't.
this is the best crossover ever.
She's hilarious! She showed up in my algorithm after I started sewing masks in quarantine, and I got hooked. I go back just to laugh basically, but she's got good sewing foundations. The Christmas Barbie and Ariana Grande recreations knocked me on my ass. She needs more costume books, I wish she'd get a PO Box. She just passed 1 million views in these past few months. So much for the adpocalypse!
"There are a lot of good fashion youtubers-"
Dude, the last video of Micarah was her draining some sort of liquid from her father's elbow.
I'm not sure what kind of youtuber she is😂
A needle youtuber.
A genius
What do you mean.
By draining the elbow she made her fathers elbow look fashionable again
She's a chaos entity
Holy SHIT! I just randomly went on your channel and actually typed "Micarah" into the search bar to see if you ever reacted to her stuff. And when I clicked on this video it said it was posted today and I was just confused 😂 I'm psychic!
Watching this video feels like when you show your friend your favorite youtuber for the first time and you are scared if they are gonna like it or not lmaooo
I HAVE BEEN WAITING
Man, I just randomly clicked on a Say Yes to the Dress video, ended up on this video, and subscribed to two different channels in one video. Sweet.
"...shes very good at describing what shes doing."
Me: *googles how long kit kats and real kats are*
I WAS LITERALLY THINKING ABOUT HOW I NEEDED THIS EXACT VIDEO LIKE A WEEK AGO WTF
Micarah makes me want to learn how to sew.
Omg, the crossover we didn't know we would have! But like, FINALLY!
I don’t think I’ve ever related to something more heavily than Micarah cutting sequins in half and individually hot gluing them down to no avail
“i’m gonna start just not saying words in videos because i don’t know how to pronounce them”
also him: “macarah”
