I recently learned that it took Lin-Manuel Miranda a year to write this song and clearly it was time well spent!
It took him 7 years to right the entire musical in general, so; dayummm-
They use fake accents and it actually really helped Daveed Diggs, who plays french Lafayette (in the seccond act he plays Thomas Jefferson). Acting with an accent made him more comfortable in the singing parts. Before Hamilton he only rapped and didn't do musical theater.
I feel the need to mention Daveed’s group, Clipping, since they are still criminally underrated.
Is no-one going to mention the cuteness of the doggo wanting a little lovin'!! He is young, scrappy and hungry taking his shot, dude!

Great reaction! I love how Bullet decided to “rise up” in the frame right when the song’s lyrics were saying that. There are some great videos of how the musical director put everything together for Hamilton’s stage show, as well as the album.

The interval on the “wo-oh, wo-oh, woo-ooo-oh”” part was inspired by the sound of the old AOL, dial-up modem booting up. It’s the same interval.
Lin would be so happy watching your videos. You're catching on to everything he was trying to do when it comes to storytelling and throwbacks to old school hip hop.
Did you catch the fact that "not throwing away my shot" is the same rhythm as the beginning piano part of Alexander Hamilton and all other subsequent similar songs which showcase some part of the "not throwing away my shot" mentality.

It's interesting to watch the original version here, and then watch the London production. The original uses New York accents, and the London version uses standard American accents, and there's a noticeable difference.

Eminem’s Lose Yourself was one of Lin’s inspirations for this song, and there are many parallels.
I read through the comments seeing if anyone had mentioned this. Lin was inspired a lot by Eminem, for more than just My Shot. His lyrical style, rhyming schemes, and ability to tell a story through song are all things that Lin has mentioned were influenced and inspired by Eminem. My Shot is the most obvious example, but you can definitely hear other Eminem influence in other songs as well.
This is a particularly cool song.

Funny you caught the Biggie inspiration. Hamilton is Biggie/Eminem/Big Pun (words words words words WORDS... and AMAZING rhyme schemes), George Washington is Common/John Legend (distinguished... class), I can't remember the Lafayette inspiration, but Hurcules Mulligan is, of course, Busta Rhymes.
Lin said he read that Hamilton went through, where he came from, and learned that he WROTE HIS WAY OUT of poverty and squalor - "That's the most hip-hop thing EVER!" And the seed was planted. When he started hearing specific rappers as characters, he was OFF!
