Thanks for the video. One addition which made me switch from ew-D to ew100: In Advanced you can choose RF Mute instead of AF mute. Whereas there is no way switching between 2 transmitters without having to always turn one off. Thanks! Do you know what the date connection is for on the back of the receiver for the 100? I love the 100, however, the battery life on the transmitter is terrible.
The Data port? I believe that’s for connecting with other devices and connecting to software for scanning and management. And the battery life on mine is great! Probably 7 hours with rechargeables? Try using a different battery if you are having issues with yours
Thanks for your detailed overview! Question about the squelch feature. Why do you set it lower when you’re setting up and then medium/higher when you’re playing? What’s the best setting to prevent that white noise from occurring? We use these for wedding ceremony AV. Lapels and handhelds.
Thanks. And I honestly am not sure I’m doing it correctly. But I scan for the clearest channel with the squelch all the way down… so that it finds the channel that has zero signal. Once it finds it, I turn the squelch up just in case it’s going to give that white noise sound. That squelch is just the safest way to prevent that white noise sound. I'm new to wireless and bought the 100 just recently. Great tutorial, got me started right away! I have one question: I hear a sound difference when playing guitar via cable or EW100. Seems the EW100 sound is not as "clear" as the cable one (missing frequencies ?) Is that normal or do I have a EW100 set up problem?
I recently got the EW-D from Sennheiser and really LOVE the bluetooth functionality they put in there. Firmware updates and syncing is such a breeze. I've been trying to find something like this for an IEM but pretty much all of them still rely on using infrared interfaces. Updating the firmware on a bodypack through these is kind of annoying and after experiencing how things could be with the EW-D I really don't want to go back. I hope that Sennheiser will update their Evolution IEMs in the near future, doesn't necessarily have to be digital, but I wouldn't mind it. Their newer products all seem to use bluetooth, none of their IEMs though… would love to be a fly on the wall at Sennheiser HQ these days to see what's in store.
@@ScottUhlMusic Yep, firmware update the receiver and bodypack just by using the App on the phone. Smoothest updating experience I ever had on a device like that. And the app is not mandatory to use the hardware (which is a pet peeve of mine when manufacturers do that). It's a really good piece of equipment. I hope you get your hands on it at some point. Would like to hear your opinion on it 😀
I love Shure products, and the QLXD and ULXD have a little less frequencies available (470-534mhz vs the sennheiser ew 500 which is 470-558mhz). So the sennheiser already wins at that point. Plus the fact you can see the RF strength on the wireless receiver is a huge plus. Again, I love my Shure products. But you get more frequency range with the sennheiser for less of a price. That’s why I like it
Can you use one transmitter and two receivers all set to the same frequency such that the audio is received by both? (e.g. for recording a lav mic to a field recorder AND a camera, or for sending a guitar to 2 amps)? Great video - thanks for making it.
No, that would not work unfortunately. You could send 1 transmitter to two locations using the two outputs in the back. But you cannot transmit more than 1 signal to a receiver
Been watching several of your videos recently. Thanks for posting. I'm comparing a few systems, including the Shure BLX system and a cheaper system (Saramonic UWMIC9S - for video presentations). Both are UHF using analog transmission. Quick question -- if you had to choose between a system with diversity antennae and only 10mW transmission (like the Shure BLX system) or a system without diversity but with 100mW transmission, which would you choose for the most reliable signal? Thanks!
Great review and explanation of its functionality, I just recently bought one myself, and it works great, I do have question though, Is it normal for the AF peak light to go high even after setting the frequency through the easy setup? Hopefully you can reply soon enough, Thank you!!
Are the transmitters well made & durable? The lower end shure transmitters are all plastic and seem cheap.... I need something that can handle weekend gigs
Hey Scott. Great job on doing reviews for those wireless systems. I watched all of those, but there’s one thing that is very important to me and that was missing on your reviews is using 2 transmitters with same receiver. I’m a bass player and have 2 basses on stage and lots of times I need to swap them very quickly. What are my best options for doing that? I read that Shure GLX-D can connect with 2 transmitters but in order to achieve that, I would need to switch off one transmitter and switch on the other, but there’s no chance for me to do that as sometimes I need to make that swap in 5 sec or so. Also I don’t want to buy 2 separate receivers for every bass if there’s other cheaper way to get what I need. Are the dual receivers my only choice and what happens if I won’t turn the bass and transmitter off and swap to other one with second transmitter? Technically the first one still be producing sound if hit accidentally, right? I guess you might have same issue in your band if you’re using 2 or more guitars for instance, so might already know the best solution for that. Also what reliable dual receivers you would recommend if that’s the only option for me? Appreciate your comments on my issue.
That’s an interesting setup… I honestly don’t know if there is a system that does that. Not that I’ve heard of anyways. So I would go with a dual system, and the best quality one at an affordable price would be the Shure Slx D because it has a dual system setup that lives in a 1U rack space. If it’s THAT critical that you do not switch on and off the wireless, that would be the route that I would go 👍 I reviewed the SLX system here: ua-cam.com/video/5VwLi7VVRgQ/v-deo.html
Thanks for prompt reply. Appreciate your advice. That’s what I’m leaning towards now, but just thought that it may be some setup or trick, that I don’t know yet ;) If there won’t be quick bass swaps, I might have some more options or even use same transmitter on each bass, but because we run lots of things on backing tracks and lots of them are interconnected, I don’t have luxury to stand around without doing anything lol. If being honest, I even don’t have time for water drink till nearly the end of the set, when they decide to do one acoustic song lol.
I have the same need. Reading this it seems that the only way to do this would be to take off one bass, flip open the transmitter, turn it off, turn the receiver connected to the other bass on and flip it closed and load up. Am I understanding correctly? I suppose another option is to wear the transmitter on my belt and unplug the bass, unload/load up and plug in the other one...
What are your thoughts when comparing this to the shure QLX for guitar? It seems to be a plus that you can replace the antenna on that body pack. They tend to break off when jumping around a lot.
A replaceable antenna is really nice. Shure SLX, QLX or ULX or these are all great units. I just like that mine is portable, but most people don’t need that
@@ScottUhlMusic but to switch between guitars you can use one receiver and two bodypack transmitters - have the transmitters tuned to the same frequency and turn off or RF mute one bodypack and turn on the other one, correct?
hi scott, which one will you prefer for professional guitarist (great sound quality, save guitar tone, respon, feel, and better signal range) this sennheiser ew100 g4 or shure glxd? I haven’t tried them before, awaiting you🙏
Very glad to have found this video - Kudos. I'm saving it to use when I get to set up the one I'm about to buy. Hope you don't mind a series of questions (1) Any reason to front mount the antennae in a rack vs. leave them nestled in the back with the rest of the equipment pointing horizontally away from you? They sell a $50 front mount kit (2) Do you use the $85 battery pack or feed it AAs forever? (worth it?) (3) The 100 has different frequency range options to choose from - how to pick? (4) I suppose choosing and using a wireless inears system (brands/frequencies) has nothing to do with selecting guitar wireless but gotta ask. I'm in the market for that as well. (I'm about to hit the road with a tribute band and my 'character' does a lot of roaming... :-)
1) absolutely put it in the front! Line of sight is the best way to get wireless to work. This is an important video to watch: 5 COMMON MISTAKES When Using WIRELESS MUSIC GEAR ua-cam.com/video/Xgw96rY4TAc/v-deo.html 2) I use rechargeable batteries and they are great. 3) use the sennheiser frequency finder if you want to go that far, but it’s not really a huge deal as long as the frequency range is legal in your area 4) if I understand correctly, no… but watch that video about getting more higher end wireless in order to use multiple ones at once. These will be great 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thank you thank you!! I have been drinking in your videos all night and I want to use your links to buy in ears gear. Hell I’ll likely feel like I should be giving you shout credit at gigs somehow once all of this is humming. (1) I have dreams of setting up the ew100 receiver and an ew300 IEM next to each other in the single rack space I can make available in my rig but will this work if I bring all 3 antennas (ha I looked it up and antennas is correct - these things aren’t bugs!) to the front? It doesn’t seem as if there is space…. (2) from your videos I think I can do this - can I?: AF out from ew100 wires to input on my pedalboard. XLR output from sans amp at end of my pedalboard goes to the house. 1/4” out from sans amp wires to left input of ew300. Monitor feed goes to right input of ew300. Left ‘loop out’ from ew300 goes to my amp. I can pan my in ears receiver to get mix of me and the band at any % I want. Or I could pan all the way to left and take out one earbud and get ambient band and always enough of me wherever I stroll on stage. Little to no reliance on negotiating with guy at the board about monitor mix. Will maybe want bass to come out of monitor mix entirely who knows.
@@ScottUhlMusic sorry to hit you up again but in your review video of the Sennheiser in ears 300 G4 in the comparison to the Shure 300 section you say that the Sennheiser "takes up 2U of rack space because of how the antennas have to go" - so will the plan of ew100 G4Ci1 and EW300 IEM G4 next to each other in a single rack space with 3 antennas in front really work?
I use the same system, except I use the bodypack EK-100 g4 receiver and Velcro it directly to the side of my PA up high for line of sight. I use it for wedding ceremonies and small, speaking engagements. What I’m wondering is am I doing myself a disservice by not using the box unit with two antennas? I never know what to call it. I’ve used the body packs for years with no issues.
How's the quality of the transmitter? I've heard the shure blx transmitters are a very flimsy plastic....these look durable from what I can see in your video....also where do you put the receiver when you gig? Down by the pedalboard or sitting on top of your amp? Thumbs up and a new subscriber here!
Transmitter is very solid! I travel with them all the time and they are still holding up great. I go direct, so I plug directly into the board with my GTRS guitar. But you can put the receiver down on your pedalboard usually 👍
@Scott Uhl, I see that Shure has released an updated system called the GLX D+. Looks interesting and retails around $500 USD. Have you tried it? Thanks.
I saw it. It’s on 2.4ghz AND 5.8ghz which is a huge improvement over the GLXD. However, for $100 more I would get the Sennheiser EW 100 or a little more for the Shure SLXD personally
Thanks for this video. Any issues with the antenna being in the rear if you rack Mount these units? I’m looking to add wireless guitar and and iem system to a rack but all the antennas on the Sennheisers are on the rear.
Hmmm interesting. No I haven’t seen that one before. Seems like a great price! Only 10 channels available though. So it will be a little limited. It costs more to get more channels and therefore more reliability
Hi again Scott This time I have got another tech question for you, regarding your portable IEM-of-choice, - the Sennheiser system. Here I am not talking about the regular “stereo-box-version”, but instead the “mono-portable-bodypack-version”, where you use a regular bodypack transmitter. It seems to me that you simply plug this into a mono AUX-OUT (line level) in a mixer, - with either an XLR or a Jack connection. It also seems to me that you don’t use an attenuator/DI-box and you never don’t mention the adjustment of sound level from line level to mic level, and yet your portable bodypack works and transmits perfectly fine. The Røde wireless GO II is capable of sending a stereo signal and I was considering this as an alternative portable IEM option, to get a stereo IEM. However, in the video clip below, another youtuber mentions the need for an attenuator (and a DI-box) in order to not harm the electronics when connecting the Røde Wireless GO II to a AUX-OUT (line level) in a mixer. ua-cam.com/video/WGdsQAdXn4c/v-deo.html How come you don’t have the need for attenuator and DI-box, when you are using your Sennheiser bodypack transmitter as an IEM-system? Also, how come you don’t have to adjust for the difference between line level and mic level in the Sennheiser bodypack transmitter, when connecting the bodypack to a line-level AUX-OUT? What makes up the differences? Best regards…
With the behringer xair systems, I never have had to adjust or use an attenuator. I do turn the SPK sennheiser down to -36db. However, I’ve done a show where I needed to just get a click track signal from an iPad, and it was WAY too hot and in that case I needed an attenuator. This is the one I use when I need it: amzn.to/2XqReAA but other that that, I’ve never had to use it. Either with my Behringer mixers or my TC Helicon Voicelive or out of my Helix or HX Stomp
@@ScottUhlMusic "I do turn the SPK sennheiser down to -36db", - I didn't notice/pay attention to this earlier. That will take a line level input down to mic level. Thank you for the answer.
Already did 🤘 ua-cam.com/video/F6nKUkfRYCo/v-deo.html but I definitely recommend this sennheiser one instead. Or the SLXD (video: ua-cam.com/video/5VwLi7VVRgQ/v-deo.html) or QLXD (video: ua-cam.com/video/TosqbbS18Oo/v-deo.html) over the GLX. Or even the BLX if you are looking for cheaper: ua-cam.com/video/k5OM4GUJNvQ/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video. Can you help me: Sometimes on the display of the ew100 I see a small drizzle very quickly on the screen. Have you already seen this?
Love the video, but I'm still having real issues with my G4. I guess this might be an odd thing to ask, but would you be prepared to face time me so I can show someone what's going on. As I've said before Axe FX3 in 4CM...with wireless terrible squealing, have to turn Drive blocks to a point where they're basically of no use. Take the wireless out of the set up, no issues at all.
@@ScottUhlMusic OK, Scott so the latest instalment in the wireless saga is as follows. This morning I took the BOSS WAZA TAE attenuator I was using out of the equation, and no problem with the wireless. No squealing on any gain channel in any mode, and I could add drive effects which only created the kind of feedback you'd expect. So what do you think the WAZA was doing, and is there a work around? On the basis of this discovery using the WAZA requires a cable, without I can go wireless. Does this make any sense to you? If nothing else it may well add another level to understanding wireless if interacting with these new pieces of gear causes issues people haven't encountered before.
Great Tutorial. Helped set up our new ew100 G4 me2 wireless (body pack/Omni mic. 1 question tho. When I power off the xmitter the AF meter pegs out on the receiver. What Am I missing. TIA in advanced
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for your quick response. Yes it stays pegged. then when I power up the xmitter the AF meter goes down to normal range. Rewatched the video a couple of times after texting you. Would the mute mode turned off on the xmitter cause the rcrvr to peg the AF on the rcrvr.

When Im changing pickup positions its cracking, and when I try to turn down the volume pot its rustling. Any suggestions from you experience. Thanks
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks to you and your video I saved bunch of money, was planing to sell the g2 and buy a new one, it was the cable causing the problem. Resoldered and the cracking is gone, and the tone and gain comes to live. Cheers man😁
so the yellow light on my transmitter keeps lighting up when I play and the meter on the receiver goes to Peak. I've tried adjusting the sensitivity on the transmitter and if I take it down so far enough to stop the yellow light from coming on it's too low for may noise gate and kills the guitar. Is this even a problem for the yellow light to be blinking on?
I use this with my variax all the time 👍 but if you mean with the variax to go into a variax cable that’s wireless, I unfortunately do not think that exists :/
@@ScottUhlMusic I would love for them to create one with the variax lead, that would be amazing. I was just wondering how the onboard sounds like acoustic, sound wireless? I was just concerned it might lose quality.
I would say so. But I would get the ew500 for more available frequencies if you were playing that big of shows. I would trust the 100s, yes. But at that level I would bring the 500s if I could

I just like that mine is portable, but most people don’t need that
Excuse my ignorance. I’m fairly new at this. As I understand all I need is one receiver to multiple transmitters?
You should have one transmitter and one receiver for each wireless device
@@ScottUhlMusic but to switch between guitars you can use one receiver and two bodypack transmitters - have the transmitters tuned to the same frequency and turn off or RF mute one bodypack and turn on the other one, correct?
Thanks for posting. It looks the same as the xs wireless 2 i just purchased. True? Using for violin
The XS just came out. It’s very similar but has less frequencies available. The EW series has more. Both are great choices though!
hi scott, which one will you prefer for professional guitarist (great sound quality, save guitar tone, respon, feel, and better signal range) this sennheiser ew100 g4 or shure glxd?
I haven’t tried them before, awaiting you🙏
Sennheiser EW 🤘
@@ScottUhlMusic are you sponsored by senn for this video?
I am not
Very glad to have found this video - Kudos.
This is an important video to watch: 5 COMMON MISTAKES When Using WIRELESS MUSIC GEAR
ua-cam.com/video/Xgw96rY4TAc/v-deo.html
2) I use rechargeable batteries and they are great.
3) use the sennheiser frequency finder if you want to go that far, but it’s not really a huge deal as long as the frequency range is legal in your area
4) if I understand correctly, no… but watch that video about getting more higher end wireless in order to use multiple ones at once.
3 antennas in a rack is usually fine 👍 and if I’m following your routing, I think you should be good. Best of luck!
The sennheiser takes up only 1U of rack space, it just takes up both sides because of how the rack Mount kit works.
Nope, that works great too!
@@ScottUhlMusic awesome, I appreciate the info & that video was perfectly done explaining everything 🤘🤘
What is the difference on reliability and distance between the rack receiver and the portable receiver?
I believe they are the same 👍
Thanks for this video. Any issues with the antenna being in the rear if you rack Mount these units? I’m looking to add wireless guitar and and iem system to a rack but all the antennas on the Sennheisers are on the rear.
Definitely bring them to the front. BEST way to use any wireless is clear line of sight from transmitter to receiver
Hey Scott, in looking at the less expensive offerings in wireless, I ran across the Sennheiser XSW 1-825 DUAL. Have you gotten to test it?
Hmmm interesting. No I haven’t seen that one before. Seems like a great price! Only 10 channels available though. So it will be a little limited. It costs more to get more channels and therefore more reliability
@@ScottUhlMusic and I can't seem to find any specs on distance.
Thank you!
Hi again Scott
This time I have got another tech question for you, regarding your portable IEM-of-choice, - the Sennheiser system.
However, in the video clip below, another youtuber mentions the need for an attenuator (and a DI-box) in order to not harm the electronics when connecting the Røde Wireless GO II to a AUX-OUT (line level) in a mixer.
ua-cam.com/video/WGdsQAdXn4c/v-deo.html
How come you don’t have the need for attenuator and DI-box, when you are using your Sennheiser bodypack transmitter as an IEM-system?
Ew 100 g4 still worth in 2023? Does this model do a good job on a big stages with big audiences?
Absolutely, still my main wireless 🤘
I have a sennheiser sk2000xp, what is my option for receivers in bodypack or rack?
Just make sure it’s in the same band, most sennheiser stuff is backwards compatible but might not be able to sync automatically
Thank you, I thought it had to be with the same model, this opens up far more options in models in my frequencies ranges than I previously thought.
Would you still recommend this over the shure glxd+ ? Personally my question pertains to the ew100.
Definitely 👍 but the pedalboard tuner design of the GLXD+ is pretty sweet
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks dude, I just bought it from sweetwater 👍🤓
I’m interested in the shure GLXD 16 ☺️
Any chance you will review that ?
Already did 🤘 ua-cam.com/video/F6nKUkfRYCo/v-deo.html but I definitely recommend this sennheiser one instead. Or the SLXD (video: ua-cam.com/video/5VwLi7VVRgQ/v-deo.html) or QLXD (video: ua-cam.com/video/TosqbbS18Oo/v-deo.html) over the GLX. Or even the BLX if you are looking for cheaper: ua-cam.com/video/k5OM4GUJNvQ/v-deo.html
@@ScottUhlMusic I meant the guitar pedal with tuner ☺️ properly the same wireless electronics ☺️
Yup, it’s basically the same thing 🤘
Thanks for the video. Can you help me: Sometimes on the display of the ew100 I see a small drizzle very quickly on the screen. Have you already seen this?
I have not seen that on mine
Ok , thank you
Love the video, but I'm still having real issues with my G4.
I can do a one on one call on zoom if you need help. You can find out more at www.scottuhlmusic.com/consulting to schedule a call
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks, Scott. I’ll be in touch tomorrow…much appreciated.
Man to be honest I have no idea. But I’m glad you found what was causing it
Great Tutorial. Helped set up our new ew100 G4 me2 wireless (body pack/Omni mic. 1 question tho. When I power off the xmitter the AF meter pegs out on the receiver. What Am I missing. TIA in advanced
Does it stay all the way pegged?
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for your quick response. Yes it stays pegged. then when I power up the xmitter the AF meter goes down to normal range. Rewatched the video a couple of times after texting you. Would the mute mode turned off on the xmitter cause the rcrvr to peg the AF on the rcrvr.
Man that’s weird. I don’t know. Sennheiser is good with responding to emails. Usually within 24 hours 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks Scott. I"ll contact them tomorrow. Again great video!

Could I power my ew 500 from a power supply like Ciocks DC7?
I haven’t heard of that
So, I got myself the 500 just to find out that it does not have the guitar tuner on it... The more expensive unit doesn't have it... why would they do that? Even in the manual it says the tuner only comes on the 100...
Really? Thats quite bizarre. I wonder why. You still have a very nice and high end wireless. But it’s bizarre they don’t have the tuner in that one
@@ScottUhlMusic yeah! I know right! I love that I have the best of the best but it actually bugs me that it doesn’t have something so basic. Yet, their cheaper model does have it. That’s a massive oversight for such a big and reputable company.
Hello Scott,
I have one question. I have Sennheiser ew100 g2 portable version with the small body packs, and wanted to use with my electric guitar but a problem ocurres. When Im changing pickup positions its cracking, and when I try to turn down the volume pot its rustling. Any suggestions from you experience. Thanks
Are you using the correct cable? I’ve had that happen when I use a generic cable as well
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks to you and your video I saved bunch of money, was planing to sell the g2 and buy a new one, it was the cable causing the problem. Resoldered and the cracking is gone, and the tone and gain comes to live.
Cheers man😁
I see both the ew100 and 500 here are G4. Would G3 work just as well??
Yup, sennheiser made their stuff backwards compatible which is pretty cool 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic does that mean one pack can be g3 and one pack can be g4? For portable, that is. Or is it better to just get both the same generation?
That’s my understanding, yes. I use my portable setup with a G3 and my pack is a G4 actually: ua-cam.com/video/0WT9fHqVzZg/v-deo.html
so the yellow light on my transmitter keeps lighting up when I play and the meter on the receiver goes to Peak. I've tried adjusting the sensitivity on the transmitter and if I take it down so far enough to stop the yellow light from coming on it's too low for may noise gate and kills the guitar. Is this even a problem for the yellow light to be blinking on?
Yellow light?
@@ScottUhlMusic yeah, on my transmitter there is a red light and below it there is a yellow light that says AF Peak.
How have you found wireless systems work with a variax?
I use this with my variax all the time 👍 but if you mean with the variax to go into a variax cable that’s wireless, I unfortunately do not think that exists :/
@@ScottUhlMusic I would love for them to create one with the variax lead, that would be amazing. I was just wondering how the onboard sounds like acoustic, sound wireless? I was just concerned it might lose quality.
Yeah that’s what I use most of the time… variax with the acoustic setting with my sennheiser wireless. It sounds great!
if i was doing a tour in arenas would the ew100 still hold up
I would say so. But I would get the ew500 for more available frequencies if you were playing that big of shows. I would trust the 100s, yes. But at that level I would bring the 500s if I could
