Rick, can you do one for bunkers that don't have the soft sand? There quite a lot of courses that have a thin layer of sand and much more packed in sand/dirt underneath. Also, what's the plan with wet sand?

Great video... How about Bunkers with the ball in a terrible position, for example: the ball being at the lip of the bunker (front or back), downward slope of the bunker, hard packed sand versus soft sand, and buried shots. Looking to break 80... Thanks again, love the videos and great advice.

I'd love to try this at my local course, avoiding the parts of the bunker where the sand is either welded together or there's about 2mm of it because it hasn't been replaced since WW1.

How about some tips on how to deal with different kinds of sand, e.g.'s wet, packed, thin. Around here the sand is anything but good and it is also inconsistent. Some courses cheap out and use beach sand which as we know turns into a version of concrete when wet. Some help there would be appreciated.

@@twm4259 Honestly I think its ridiculous to expect to play as it lies when in a lot of cases, the rules of golf make little sense when you apply them at courses that don't have professional quality grounds-keeping. Why should I damage my club because my ball landed in a bunker that's filled with small pieces of gravel laid over what appears to be tamped down dirt? I think raking and dropping should be allowed on courses of poor quality. A lot of courses that don't water their fairways have a rule that you can move your ball to a patch of grass if it lands on dirt.

    • @twm4259

Been watching you for a while and love your tips. Just finished up a week long golf trip and using tips I’ve seen before had only one bunker shot that didn’t turn out well. That was a fairway bunker and tried for the green with a 4 iron. Caught the lip. Fortunately the ball had enough momentum I did escape the bunker. All my green side bunker shots were great as I put the ball close enough I one putted. Thanks for the tips.

Would love to see a video on “bad” bunkers. I play at some well-kept courses. Well the courses are well-kept but the bunkers. They are either packed sand with no give, so it feels like you’re hitting off a cart path, or they are just full of water that’s been there for awhile. I can hit out of the fluffy stuff all day, but those bunkers are few and far between.

I took my daughter golfing for the first time the other day and none of the tips would have proved successful as there is more sand in a supermarket car park than the bunkers we played in, mudkers!

If you open the club face more, does it affect the direction of the ball?

I set myself up to hit an imaginary ball behind the one that's in the bunker. That gives you just less than the 2" you suggest, and is easy to replicate every time, don't set yourself up to the ball in the bunker, then pull your hands back 2", that's almost a guaranteed thin

I’ve found that at my local course, the best way to get out of the bunker is to directly hit it. They are so rock hard it bounces out!

What changes when the sand is soaking wet and its like hitting off the car park?

Nothing better than holing out from the bunker.

Issue i find is might not have to play a bunker shot for months.
Also a lot of clubs basically use building sand which seems to compact and take forever to dry.
Then at the base of the bunker is rock solid.

Rick, could you speak to scenarios where the sand is very firm? Imagine a public or municipal course. Ours are clay like and rock solid typically.
