This is a GREAT tip. Was struggling at a practice facility with sand shots. Remembered I had this on my phone. Checked it, used it and BOOM. Worked like a charm. I also adapted the Jon Rahm technique the last time I played. Placed my driver about 6 inches behind the ball on drives and had a consistent round off the tee.
Great tip when the sand is nice & fluffy. Can you post another instructional vid when the base is hard packed? Like how the bunker might appear after a heavy rain or there simply isn't a lot of sand.
Great lesson! I've been struggling with the bunker shot all season and I practiced today and that tip about lowering the shaft angle to get the club face more on line helped a lot!! Also that low stance with the weight forward. I got 8 in row out with 4 on the green and 4 just off but out of the bunker. I also tried it out from the rough just off the green and it works great in that situation too,
At 10 years of age I was taught to hit flop shots on grass. Until I perfected it with 100% confidence. My instructor took me in a bunker and had me hit a flop shot. I hit the shot and put it 12’ from pin. The next one was 4’ the 3 rd in the hole. Learn the flop on grass and take it in the bunker works.
Alex, I saw another UA-cam video explaining how to hit bumper shots. But the teacher was a hall of fame golf coach. The interesting thing was he showed a technique to use without a ball to learn the proper setup and swing technique. Since there is no ball its takes the anxiety away of hitting a bad shot. It was brilliant. I now have a practice technique to use to hit better bunker shots. The technique you demonstrate is similar but not as detailed. As always you are spot on with your videos.
Brilliant 💪🏻 Finally I understood how to play it. I normally don’t get into bunkers that often and when I do I don’t have the feeling nor the experience and I panic a bit… But now I have been out on my golf curse and training from what you said on the video and now I got it 😂 Thank you from the bottom of my heart 🙏🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yes a good tip - totally agree about the state of bunkers at many UK courses that don’t allow for this technique - usually because they become hard packed
Alex, I have enjoyed your videos for several months and like your teaching style. I would like to suggest a companion video to your bunker video to explain any setup changes required for bunker shots from an uphill lie, downhill lie or when the sand in the bunker is thin, or wet. Thanks
Hi Alex tried this technique today & your right it is so easy to get out the greenside bunkers my bunker confidence as massively improved. Many thanks keep up the goodwork
I’ve used this shot for years. Very close to pin out of the bunker, as well as farther away in the bunker. I’ve found it extremely useful when facing an obstacle between the ball and the pin. I’ve gone over small trees and tall trees. It’s a very important shot to know! From the fairway and rough.
Hi Alex; If you're in a bunker with a decent lie, after you dig your feet in, shouldn't you hit behind the ball automatically because your feet are lower in the sand than the ball? You should hit it fat which is where you want to hit it anyway. Also, & this is only my experience, if I open the face before I take my grip, it sometimes comes out too low with way too much spin to the left because I'm swinging from the outside across the ball. Lefty golfer. I just use my normal grip as for every other shot & allow my right wrist to cup which opens the face. The 1 thing I don't do is get lower with hands lower so I definitely want to try that. Thanks for all of your videos.
Alex, I enjoy your golf tips on videos. Years ago in a golf lesson, I was taught to “visualize” hitting a saucer of sand and ball is the teacup. Also, taught to open left/lead foot about 20 - 30 degrees to keep the opened club face traveling square to target. Your thoughts and comments? PS - from Alabama, USA.
Excellent job Alex on explaining an "eye opening" bunker technique! I try to do all that you have shown with exception of thinking "thumbs up" on the back swing! This I will definitely incorporate into my routine! Thanks Alex! Keep up the good work!!
Great video Alex. Can I ask question though please. My 60 degree wedge doesn’t have much bounce where as my 54 does have lots of bounce. Should I be always using the 54 with it having more bounce? Thanks Alex
Alex, I do use this, but liking the explanation. The finishing touch, I find, is to yell at players on the green that you are very likely to skull it at them and then NOT do so 🙂
Same as Dennis Collins. Perhaps you could do a video on how to get out of wet compacted sand, closing the face as thats what a lot of us are dealing with right now after the weather we have had in the UK. Still a good video though.
No mention of foot direction? I see you have your left foot practically pointing at the target. Will try this technique (again!) today, maybe it will actually work this time!
Alex, you obviously are perfectly right, *however* , the sand you're using here is perfectly fluffy. Dosing your shot on a hard crust of sand is something totally different... It's a frequent problem and l should be glad to find the solution. Can you help? ☺
I tried this and when I sat down into the shot it made me hit more under the ball and I took too much sand and didn’t get the ball out. Am I doing something wrong?
I'm not Alex or a pro but I can tell you that you can't use this method on firm or wet sand. The club will bounce off of the sand & you'll blade it or not get it over the lip if there is one. Don't open the face as much & hit it like a chip. What makes it more difficult is that you have to hit closer to the ball & it won't have a lot of spin so will roll farther. Definitely a hard shot.
One thing I'm guilty of is using the 58 from most distances around the greens and end up making mistakes by trying to hit the ball out too hard. I'll definitely try to use the 50 further out 👍
@@AlexElliottGolf I have been watching your vids for a few months now and have started this year off 10 strokes better than precious years. Same clubs are going g 20 yards further with higher loft. Thank you SOOO MUCH!
The problem is even tho I open the club like that and try to hit one golf ball behind - I still blade into the ball one third of the time - that’s what disheartening
... and btw... it's all good and well until you're in a bunker with hard wet sand. It's only occasionally I have the luxury of nice fluffy sand, I feel ;-)
Exactly what I would have said. Open the face, plan your swing plane to appear your hitting it left (the open face will make it go right) and swing softer but, with enough to get out.
Most of the bunkers at Michaels have been built with artificial lips out of Artificial Grass, which is very easy to get to the bottom of and very difficult to get out off🏌️
*This is ESSENTIAL! make bunkers EASY JUST COPY THIS*

+ fairway bunkers
I agree. Many bunker videos show the best of the best bunkers. Those don’t exist in a lot of places.
Yup that’s very true 👍@@derrickmoore9180
Bunkers in California that are dirt not sand lol

I've had some bunker woes this season for sure. I think the squatting is what I really need. I've gotten thin on a bunch.
My course has a lot of hardpan. What would you change in technique for that? Close face more?
Alex, as usual, you are spot on. Your tips are the best!

Another great video Alex! By the way, I've been lining up the driver head at the tow of the ball and slightly behind. Excellent results.

@@AlexElliottGolf Will do Alex! Next tournament is next week and I'm sure I'll be in at least one or two bunkers! :-(
Great advice! Thank you once again!

Great video - also thinking you’re hitting the sand out the bunker is a good swing thought 👏
Super Alex - Speed is so important. that's the takeaway!
I love your player cam perspective videos!
Glad you like them!
Excellent.
Thanks it helps a lot, i will not be scared ending up in the bunker any more .😊
Thank you. Genius. Will try it tomorrow.
Hope you enjoy
Does your weight stay on your front foot thru out the swing?
Hi can you suggest an ideal depth below the ball in dry sand?
Well done, I'll give this try :)
No mention of foot direction? I see you have your left foot practically pointing at the target. Will try this technique (again!) today, maybe it will actually work this time!
The left wrist looks slightly cupped. Is it? And does this come into the stroke automatically?

Great video but our bunkers never have anything other than hard packed sand. Wedges just bounce off and blade the ball. Help please. Va
Hi Dennis,
I would copy this close the face & move the ball back!
Why open the cob face, is it not the same as using a more lofted club?
I tried this and when I sat down into the shot it made me hit more under the ball and I took too much sand and didn’t get the ball out. Am I doing something wrong?
MWHG - Great technique, but at my course the bunkers are a sprinkling of sand and rock solid underneath. Will this still work?
Yes, absolutely keep your eyes on the channel i have you covered
Grat tip Alex
Thank you Phillip
Thanks Alex, but you failed to mention depth of sand you take with the clubface i.e. 1/2 inch 3/4 inch.
Does this still work in bunkers with little sand that especially when wet is compacted and quite firm?
Yeah but i have another bunker tip going up tonight which will help
Nice bunker Alex. Where's the rocks and foot prints and other holes for the ball to have landed in? :)
What do you mean sorry? I placed the ball there to film the video?
bunkers where I am tend to be very firm. I've always just treated it like a chip shot. so I'll give this a try.
I'm not Alex or a pro but I can tell you that you can't use this method on firm or wet sand. The club will bounce off of the sand & you'll blade it or not get it over the lip if there is one. What about a steep ridged bunker where there’s no room for error, please show how to a higher ridged bunker shot!
When you used your hand to scoop the ball out, was it the loft of a 7 or 6 iron ? Looked liked a 7.🤪🇺🇲🍻👍
Just an example 🤣🤣🤣
@@AlexElliottGolf my hardest shot is the one im about to hit.🤗🤣, thanks for your time , as Always..
Not so sure this would work with hard sand which I've played a few !
For whatever reason I have always been decent at getting out of sand. The other 90% of my game however....lol
Set the face first...that's where I'm getting it wrong. Great video, thanks. 👍
Glad it helped
Old school… open face, out to in swing with some zip. Doing this 40 years ago.
But Ur divert was in front of the ball.

What about when you have a really short bunker shot really close to the pin and you can’t afford to hit it too far
I would
Open the face more and copy
This!!
Exactly what I would have said. Open the face, plan your swing plane to appear your hitting it left (the open face will make it go right) and swing softer but, with enough to get out.

No offence but I've seen this basic bunker video 500 times by almost every youtube instructor. My eyes are open but this technique didn't open them.
".... and you'll get out the first time, everytime!!".... I'm sorry, but I won't..??
What?
Too much information. Bunker shots are easy…hit with a full swing 1 inches behind the ball, swing through, done.
Painfully long
