Dry aging Pheasants by leaving them out in cool weather is totally normal and makes the meat more tender, but it getting so smelly that fast is a bad sign.

some actually enjoy it specifically if it has spoiled a bit. some don't gut them at all because of this. given that John talked about his father doing it this way, it's possible that he just doesn't know how to do it right, or that they enjoyed it a little... off.
SPOILER ALERT, If you havent read the book stop reading now, If you don't care, Here goes : ...From the book, what I understand ( and since I'm going by faulty memory I could be very wrong), Is that Mariko's Husband really loves her (besides not knowing how to show it) in his own strange way, his motivation to marry her was to save her from prosecution, and I think its possible she may resent him for it, and therefore to punish him she holds back the reciprocal love he expects, kicking off a negative dynamic of the relationship between them. At least that's how I remember it.
And, I think Torenaga had a hand in the movements to save her back then also.
I dod not know that, probably because of the diffent weather between England and Japan.

To my mind, Shogun the book is to adult historical fiction what the LOTR is to fantasy. Made a huge impact in the 70s and directly leads to the vast number of great novels and dramas we can enjoy today, while the TV mini series was revolutionary too and brought many people to the genre.
Never thought I would see an ever greater retelling, succeeding in adapting the spirit and drama of the story which remains one of my favourite books to this day.
As you read the novel as a European you became steadily more immersed in Japanese culture and could feel it change your worldview, just as it did the Anjin. Am sure this series is having the same effect for many viewers

Very subtle comment that most people are missing. In her story Mariko said her father killed the evil warlord Kuroda. When they first introduced Lady Ochiba, they said she was the daughter of Kuroda.
I remember Ochiba was his niece actually.
Is she related to Toranaga's wife too? Because Toranaga's wife/consort's name is "Kiri No Kata", while Ochiba's full name is "Ochiba No Kata"
@@TehIdiotOne I don't know about the show, but if I remember correctly Toranaga is not married, he was supposed to marry Lady Genjiko, at least that was what the Taiko wanted in order to bring their families closer, but Ochiba was against it. Lady Genjiko was Ochiba's sister and was married to Sudura, Toranagas son and heir, and that was the pretext used to bring Ochioba to Edo in the first episode and hold her as a guarantee for his own safety. Apparently Ochiba dearly loves her sister and Lady Genjiko was in labor at the time, and she left after the birth of the new baby.

What Blackthorne is doing with the bird is simply aging the meat. Obviously this is a less than ideal way to do it but...yeah. Aging and curing meat has been done for thousands of years. Its done differently than this today obviously, but many have definitely bought and eaten meat (probably for more money too) that has been aged because it increases tenderness and sometimes flavor. Same concept. I get this wasn't explained well in the show though.

The show kind of does Buntaro a little dirty by only giving us Mariko's POV. Buntaro loves Mariko which is why he refuses to let her kill herself. She resents him for this and therefore offers him no chance for any type of husband/wife intimacy. She treats him with utter coldness. This doesn't excuse the violence but does make him more understandable and less of "just a piece of shit".
While it may never have been a blissful marriage it does show how the rigidity of the honor system can bleed into and ruin many aspects of life
In many ways it explores the danger of "extremes". I think that's why they paired it up with the Gardeners death, which in the book, was the thing that truly broke Blackthorn.
This show is incredibly well done and I'm really glad you're enjoying it. Would love a book club once it's finished though lol.
Buntaro loves mariko so...he beats her. Yeaaaa ur a red flag.
Buntaro loved Mariko very much until her father betrayed their Lord. After that he resented her for what her father did.
@@Mwoods2272 I'm not sure how much he resented her for her father's betrayal. When it first happens he sends her away for a while. She sees this as banishment but he was trying to protect her. If he felt shame for her family he could just let her kill herself and be done with it. He resents her because she gives him nothing despite his love. It's just a messed up situation exacerbated by the cultural norms of the time.
Buntaro and Mariko's relationship is complicated, the book goes into more detail. Essentially Buntaro is deeply in love with Mariko, you see this in the look he gives her in episode 3 when it appears that he is about to die. Mariko however resents his refusal to allow her to kill herself so returns his love with coldness which makes his life miserable and causes him to behave like a dick. When Buntaro apologises to Blackthorn for beating Mariko, he is genuinely ashamed for his actions.
He’s not a pirate, he’d be a privateer. Basically a state sanctioned pirate.
Watching your reaction during the scene with the dinner it came to my mind that this show has a remarkable writing level. In one second it makes you laugh just to make you cry in the next one. And you don't expect that at all.
The bird thing is ... in short, it's to highlight the divide in the cultures, but it's something the British really did, and it's still done (to a lesser extent) with bird meat, today, to concentrate flavor.
But... Blackthorne may not have taken the differences in the environment into account. Britain is much colder, on average, than Japan, on average. Leaving a bird out for days and days like that in a temperate environment, not a great idea.
Also Blackthorne had forgotten about the bird and was busy with the training. And because he was a foreigner and had different customs they didn’t know what to do so they handled it in the only way they knew how. It drove home the cultural divide between the English and Japan and reminds him he has to be more careful and aware of it.
I think we saw snow start to fall so is probably quite cold already. It's mostly a cultural thing in both the eating of meat and the method of preparation (Japanese diet was mostly vegetarian, if not pescetarian). It's also not just a clash of cultures but a clash of classes as John comes from the working class who did the butchery well away from the lords, not in their homes. I highborn Englishman would never have hung a carcass anywhere near his home. And would have gotten someone else to do it.
japs were known for cleanliness, the order of things. least you did like that in the house. 😅 the stink could be smelled by neighbors & village. it's unbearable to them.
I noticed that you didn't show nor talk about the two arrows Buntaro shot into the front pillar. They showed it briefly when Blackthorne came back to the house after the earthquake; he ran into them. The second arrow split the first. Try to do that sober! 😮😮

Aging game meat to make it tasty and tender is super common. Think of the dry aged beef people are paying hundreds of dollars for. Same deal. Cut away the rotting parts and voila. I guess not really a thing for Japanese people. At least traditionally.
This show is written so well to play off different views and cultures
I was reading in another comment that to the Samurai, their swords are considered part of their soul. To lose his swords would bring great dishonor to Toranaga, potentially forcing him to seppuku. However, Blackthorne gives his swords to his liege lord, like any truly loyal servant should do for their lord, but perhaps wasn't quite aware of the significance of literally saving Toranaga's life with that gesture.
Since a katana is a practical item, not an ornament, no one would commit suicide by losing it. The higher status ppl owned a katana made by a famous smith with a design or family crest that symbolized them, so they didn't own someone else's sword. (Unless it was made by a very famous smith.) Blackthorn showed integrity and "not being attached to things (the most important value and virtue for Buddhists)," so Toranaga was impressed by his character and smiled. I haven't read the novel, but I personally saw it that way.
For a Samurai giving his own sword to his lord show the ultimate obedience and loyalty, Toranaga had just made John a Samurai and a tittle Hatamoto. Of course John doesn't know it, he accidentally gain Toranaga respect 😂
You seem to keep confusing "Christians" (protestants) and "Catholics". Blackthorne is Christian but not Catholic. You keep saying Christians this and Christians that but you mean to say Catholics this and Catholics that. For the context of this show. Also, he was laughing when he was given the swords because, IF you remember, those swords were purchased from a drunken Samurai and are kind of a known joke. Now, he MUST accept them as they were gifted and he finds that funnily ironic.
The Japanese characters simply refer to all of them as Christians, which is also correct (as both are branches of Christianity, two of many). Remember until Blackthorne's arrival the Japanese were entirely unaware that there were any other types of Christians besides Catholics, let alone a variety of factions which are currently at the root of a series of wars which are raging across Europe and which will IRL leave Germany depopulated by about 1/3rd.
You seem to not be paying attention to the show at all.

In the book, Buntaro and Mariko had a happy marriage for a while, until Mariko's father did what he did. Buntaro forbids Mariko to die because of both his resentment and love for her.
The show explains this pretty clearly?
I love that we are foreshadowed to the villanous nature of Lady Ochiba. The music, the lilt in her voice that takes on that villanous tone, its all so great and I can't wait to see what happens.

In the book, Blackthorn names the large central stone in the garden Uejiro-sama (Lord Uejiro), after the gardener who lost his life over the pheasant.
Aging game birds for several days to a week is common, although it has to be done at relatively cool temperatures--and it still is no later than early spring in the show. Aging tenderizes the meat and creates flavor; ring-necked pheasant can be tough and bland when freshly killed and requires creative cooking to become palatable. I don't know about Canada, but pheasants were imported from Asia to the US specifically as game birds, and they are now naturalized in many areas and breed in the wild.
Hi Nerdy and Claruse ! The Pheasant rotting thing ... apparently was a practice used long ago.. a hunted animal when killed has alot of toxins from being afraid the moment before death and can make the meat taste really bitter and terrible so hunters would ussually hang them out to "relax" and soften so it would be easier to skin / pluck feathers.. etc. I think the English kind took the whole.. letting it rot a few days too far for my tastes tho.. LOL ! I loved this episode so much for its continued insight into the culture and perceptions of those days.. Anjin ( Blackthorn ) didn't really appreciate or understand the depth of how words carry weight .. Being a Hatamoto meant his words carried more weight than most..also that a man's home was his domain.. what that man said concerning his home was LAW... period. To even question an order by your lord , would mean disrespect and dishonoring the rank / status of the person that said it.. so commands were not supposed to be questioned.. it was considered more than rude. you could even say, the events of this episode brought about EARTH-SHAKING revelation to the Anjin about just how powerful ... honor , tradition & words can be, eh? Its still a fairly common practice for people who hunt pheasant and quail. Since pheasant season is usually late fall through winter it doesn't get hot enough for them to rot in the 5-10 days but the meat tastes better, like dry aged beef.
The way the Heirs mother was speaking was Sweet, Seductive, and Sinister at the Sametime. The tone and undertone of her speech contradi t eachother. I just love how her Japanese sounds. If you didn't know Japanese and just heard her speaking you would assume she was being very polite and humble.

Hanging game fowl (such as pheasant) was a method for tenderising the flesh and imparting a "game" flavour (slightly rotted, yuk.) to the bird. Not sure I would like it but its was fairly common back in the day.
Hi Nerdy and Claruse. First, wonderful reaction. Second, lovely dress, Claruse. Third, I dont know if the tv show will track with the books, but Fuji was burned. In the books it was her legs; here it looked like her back. The interesting thing is this is how Blackthorne finds out how far ahead of European nations the Japanese were in the treatment of burns. They had to be with all the natural disasters and everything built out of wood and rice paper. Love you guys.
The symbol on the flags fo Toronaga's army us the same historical symbol that was used by the Tokugawa clan, Toronaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu who became Shogun and he and his heirs were the military rulers of Japan for the next 260 years

I don't try to make excuse for Buntaro, he has no excuse. but base on Mariko story, Mariko father killed Buntaro's ancestor lord Toda Nobugana, the first lord unified Japan.
Buntaro is the epitome of "Okay.. just hear me out..."
But honestly, he's a complex character and certainly more than a wife-beater..
The thing is, Mariko doesn't want to live but he loves her and forbids her from dying but she hates him for that and is cold to him, that pissess him off because he thinks he's saving her by now allowing her to just die..
And then.. the unfortunate event...
So first of all, bonturo came home after literally killing his way out of an impossible situation only to find out his wife is now living with a barbarian. Then, he also has to live with a barbarian and that's a humiliation to him. And after all that he already suspects that maybe his wife cheated on him so that just made it worse after drinking so much sake and that all just burst out violently.
This is very interesting, Maiko was a daughter of Mitsuhide who committed mutiny against Nobunaga Oda during the day when Yasuke served under him. Her family was the one who ended the demon lord rule.

Mariko's list of things the anjin has done while Toranaga was away:
- Try natto.
- Teach the regiment how to use cannons.
- Her.
Hanging the pheasant outside like that was a common thing in Europe at the time. As the meat ages it becomes more tender, but there's also a good chance of it spoiling, which is a big reason why Europeans become so fond of using spices for their cooking. It would conceal the taste of rotting meat.

I really don't think she would toss Mariko under the bus and sow seeds of suspicion right after defending Blackthorne with the "not barbarian, Hatamoto," but I willingly admit I could be mistaken.
yeah she was in now way tossing Mariko under the bus. How many times has Blackthorne readily been offered women to pillow in this show already. They are putting the viewer perspective onto characters in the show. This is the first time I've seen reactors react to that scene that way. There was no implication given to Buntaro that he was sleeping with his wife, which would be an odd conclusion for him to jump to with his knowledge to begin with, no less the general culture around all this.
The concept of individual freedom and value of the individual life as such, whas not really introduced into western culture either in the 1600s. It took the Age of Reason in the 17th and 18th century and a certain degree of secularisation, for this concept to start to flurish. It really start to take hold and flourish with the later quantum leaps of medicine, that reduces the chance of dying of some random thing massively.
East Asia never fully went through this process and for the most part, a human live in genral (in a society context) is not valued as highly as in many western societies, although the value of a individual in a personal relationship context is probably the same.

The moment that John Blackthorne is fixing the garden: I feel like that moment is when he really embodies the title he was given.
I'd like to add on to what you were saying about not smelling people in japan, aside from the cultural thing, its also genetic, a large percentage of japanese and also other asian people have no body odor, and back during wartime, people with no body odor were selected to crew a submarine because they would be all together in close quarters and be sweaty and have no new air comming in. so having no body odor would help with that.
The interaction during the dinner scene is genuine, in Japan to loudly slurp one’s noodles is considered a great compliment to the person who prepared them. It’s saying that they taste so good that you can’t help yourself.

It’s not that human life didn’t have meaning there… it’s just the power of hierarchy was too absolute. In modern Japan, this sort of thing would not happen.
i wouldn't exactly say this doesn't happen in modern Japan.. I heard a Japanese airline Pilot committed suicide after discovering the plane he was in charge of was the one responsible for bringing COVID to Japan.
The cinematography and camera work has been outstanding in this series until now, however this episode has the only one scene where it seemed off to me. The opening sequence with Toranaga's army arriving has the sun behind the army, while the Blackthorne-Mariko-Yabushige gang looking out at them seem to have the sun setting behind them. Probably scenes shot at different times and not really anything to point out except for being the most nitpicky. But when every scene is as masterfully thought out as it has been until now, that sequence slightly stuck out. Was wondering if you'd notice it too or have an explanation as to why I might be wrong and the light could actually work like that.
The director for ep. 4 and 5 is more of an action/violence director so the odd aesthetics may be because of this.

I think this series has been quite straightforward - considering how, what, 70%?? of it is subtitled - so I'm always a little surprised when people take till Mariko's beating to figure Buntaro's treatment of her lol we saw him demeaning her in his introduction! lol anyway! this series is so good, I'm so happy I get to watch it live!
I mean...think about what channel you are watching here. They didn't know who the spy was who was clearly introduced episodes ago as blatantly as possible without flat out stating it.

I find it interesting that Buntaro apologized for disturbing the harmony of Blackthorn's household, not for striking Mariko. He was willing to give his life for that insult even though he doesn't respect Blackthorn and it didn't even occur to him that hitting his wife would be wrong.
its the culture of that time period.. why should Buntaro apologize for hitting his wife.. that's his domain right or wrong to anyone else's eyes. it's where he did the deed and what it did to the harmony of a place that he was only a guest of that clearly made it wrong and not the act itself.
@@carlart74 For most of human history violence towards women and children has been considered a property crime. The Law of Æthelberht is a good example of this in European history.
I was mainly trying to draw a comparison between Buntaro's views on the two actions and what that says about his character and the society he lives in that it produces such extream responses.

@@carlart74 Firstly, Japanese history is not "far older" than European history. I'm not sure what you're referring to there, or why restricting ourselves to a single culture is necessary. Secondly, you can't commit a property crime against yourself. I was pointing out how most societies throughout history would have held Buntaro at no fault for striking his wife.
