    Cannon balls can just be casted, and Japan can already make their own gun powder.

      The tricky bit is the instruments and mathematics for precise aiming, that astrolabe Blackthorne is using is novel technology for gunnery.
      The other bit is the English have started introducing standardised weapons, okay its still in the early stages but it means a set of English 12 pound naval guns will all have roughly similar performance and aiming.
      Add the fact that everyone else is using brass cannons, Englan has started using iron barrels which have lower performance but are cheaper so instead of spanish ships having to drag in dozens of different types of guns f every calibre an English ship has a full broadside of standard guns and you can see why the english have basically skipped an era and things are about to get very exciting for the spanish.

    I look forward to Shogun every week.
    I am Japanese.
    There is a reason why Fuji does not touch the guns of the Anjin with bare hands.
    For the samurai, the sword is considered to be the dwelling place of the soul or god.
    Basically, no one other than the owner of the sword is allowed to touch it.
    Whenever someone touches another person's sword, they always hold it wrapped in a fukusa (like a handkerchief).
    My guess is that Fuji thought of Anjin's gun like a samurai sword.
    And then there is natto, a food made from fermented soybeans. Natto (fermented soybeans) has been around in Japan for a long time.
    It was mainly eaten in eastern Japan.
    Osaka, where the Shogun is set, is famous for being a place where many people do not like natto.
    By the way, I love natto.
    Natto is sold in Japanese supermarkets.
    You guys should give natto a try.

    The official podcast said "consort" was not an exact translation. As hatamoto, Blackthorne must be part of a samurai family. Toranaga is "marrying" him into Fujiko-san's. Her responsibility is to run his household much as a samurai wife is expected to do in the Sengoku period.
    I suspect this is also what happened to real life William Adams (Miura Anjin). Togukawa Ieyasu arranged a match for him because he served as a retainer.

      if i remember correctly, while the novel takes some noticeable liberties in depicting the history of the unification of japan, it is actually pretty close to how the whole thing went down, and also pretty authentic to the period and the people that shaped it

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 2 місяці тому +2

      @@murciadoxial8056 It is one of the best examples of historical fiction being actually pretty faithfully historical, rather than a period piece. The names are different, times and places and events are fudged or simplified but very much still reflect the overall events, and as far as is known, while the characterisation takes liberties, the accuracies of the cultural periods in the East and West are pretty spot on, and the characters fit very close to their direct inspirations. In some cases, like Blackthorn teaching naval cannonry, is more accurate to Adams' experience than the novel and original miniseries, where he attempts to teach gunnery tactics. While Adams may have witnessed or been a part of engagements where such things were involved... We're talking privateering, not someone regularly hauling around a compliment of Royal Marines. So while the source material is pretty great on its own... This adaptation shines in part because of Hiroyuki Sanada's conditions on involvement. He wanted to do justice to the period, from the politics to the clothing; they even had the script translated into Japanese by formally trained period playwrights (so like, if someone had to translate something into Shakespearean-era English), and then had it translated back into the appropriate languages to check how it worked and if they could use it. If you consume enough modern Japanese media, you've probably noticed that the Japanese spoken by the characters is not only heightened in terms of what would be considered extreme modern politeness, BUT, some of the words are completely archaic and haven't been used for a few centuries at most. Same roots, and other things becoming more casual as the social etiquette did, but still.

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 2 дні тому

      @@princesadelaos Ohhh, that makes sense. Hmm... To be fair to him though, even this production had to consult period specific historians and playwrights just to get the Japanese to sound more contemporary to that period, because even though they wanted it to sound more authentic, the average modern japanese writer wouldn't necessarily know, either. He wrote it in the 70's, didn't he? Still more accurate than I'd expect something from that decade to be.

    Welcome to what happens when Cannon (In this case, chain-shot) is accurate portrayed on film. They are brutal, brutal weapons. Many many years later a Confederate General would simply say this about war "Mars is not an aesthetic God."

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 2 місяці тому +1

      Truly. Normal cannonballs rip through everything in their path, men fall like bowling pins but if those pins were as comparably as fragile as eggs, filled with blood and viscera. Normally on screen they just fall down with some spray of blood from offscreen if they do a close-up. Grape and cannister shot just created the original "pink/red mist", and while chain shot wasn't intended nor really directly used on people... They certainly did still get caught in its flight path. I was NOT expecting an accurate depiction of the steel bolo of death, but when they left the chain shot as the last thing they loaded in the cannon and didn't continue on with that, and heard that amazing foley work of what sounds like something in a rotational whip in the air, my brain went "oh fuck no--" right as it tracked to the carnage. 😅

    Katana were considered the Soul of a samurai.. this and the fact that they were made from carbon steel meant that they were also easily ruined by rust thru oils .. the blade should only touch silk and blood. Samurai women, or women / consorts/ wives of samurai gave respect to the weapon by not handling the open blade end.. Fuji handling his pistols with the same reverence spoke volumes… her subtle acting style and facial expressions and the character she plays makes her my favorite!! Thank you for the awesome reaction to a beautifully crafted show

      It's also a way of handling weapons that could be considered "heirlooms" rather than just stuff available (like the Naginata in the previous episode). She was attempting to treat them the way she would handle the swords of a family she didn't belong to. Once she is obliged to bear them in order to keep them on behalf of their owner, then she is willing to take them bare-handed.

    That "chain shot' that was used in the last scene was pretty vicious. I was just reading up on it, and it is typically used against other ships to take out their sails. Which looks like what had happened to the Erasmus. I guess they didn't get their chain shots ready in time

    • @Knight-Bishop
      @Knight-Bishop 2 місяці тому +1

      Very much so. Two cannonballs or a split ball linked by a meter of heavy chain, typically aimed high. You could use fire to take out sails, but lighting it often put your ship at as much risk as the target. The intent was to snap masts if possible, but it could also shred sails better than a single ball, and tangle and rip the hundreds of yards of rigging holding everything together. They were expensive and shorter ranged, but could be so effective that one good barrage from the top deck could cripple a larger vessel. Pirates and privateers loved it.

    The consort not touching the swords or the guns was probably a representation of the reoccurring half superstition half cultural taboo surrounding touching a samurais, in certain places at certain times it was believed that the soul of the samurai was in their swords, sometimes very literally sometimes poetically, but you’ll notice in sumo wrestling the Yokozuna will carry a sword to competitions but when he competes his sword bearer will hold it very deliberately with a piece of fabric between his hand and the sword

    There is one vital peace that was in the books that was left out of this episode. When the Anjin was given a year to train the canon regiment, he was also told to learn Japanese. The entire village was commanded to help him learn Japanese, if he did not learn sufficiently than the entire village would be put to death. This plagued Balckthorne and weighed heavily on his mind. So in the end he decided to commit Seppuku, and committed himself to the act. It was only the fast response of Omi that stopped the blade. For Blackthorne, he had died that day and was reborn as Anjin-san. Yabu stated that what ever he learned it would be sufficient. It was a major step in Blackthorne embracing Japan and adopting their culture. I wish they had kept it in the show.

    North American vowels are so strangely different. When you tried to say "onsen" it almost sounded like "anzen", which means "safety". So my advise for Americans would be to work on your vowels if you want to go to Japan and use some Japanese words. You would be understood much easier.
    You didn't say it here, but one word Americans usually get wrong is "kawaii", which very often comes out as "kowai" when Americans try to say it. The former means "cute" and the latter means "scary", so it could potentially become a very awkward situation.

    5:09 Sanada's voice is well trained. In Japanese martial arts they say to "speak from the belly," but what about Kozmo Jarvis's voice? 4:47 6:41 Isn't his voice just like Donald Duck in the cartoons?

      Well, Donald Duck is a respectable character with a long history. So I take your comment as a compliment to him.

    No way the Portugese would of shown the Japanese how to use Cannons as it is their only advantage over the Japanese in the black ships and their cannons if the Japanese knew how to use Cannons effectively they could defend their ports against ships as at this time the Japanese Naval knowledge is centuries behind Europe.

      The historian on the FX podcast said they changed John from training them to use guns (which didn't make a lot of sense at that point in history) to cannon, as that would have continutity with the later use of English/Dutch cannons (and portuguese made) in the 1614 seige of Osaka. They also seem to be changing Blackthorne to be closer to William Adams, who was very much a naval man (sailed against the Spanish armada 1588 and was trained in ship building).
