Hiroyuki Sanada isn’t just the lead actor he’s also one of the hands on producers on the show. He wanted an absolutely accurate depiction of 1600 Japan, so he brought on historians and experts in Japanese etiquette to make sure everything was absolutely perfect for that era.
Plus, Hiroyuki is not only one of the best and most charismatic actors around but with his world class sword fighting and martial arts skills, he’s practically a samurai in real life. They literally couldn’t have picked a better person for the job.

I heard in an interview he said with the language. They are not speaking modern day Japanese, its more older wording and terms that they would use from those days. Like Shakespeare English almost. They put in the work for this show and the quality comes through.

Also, the attention to detail in this show is CRAZY. They wrote the script in English, translated it to Japanese, and then hired Japanese linguistics scholars to properly translate it into period accurate Japanese. Basically the William Shakespeare version of Japanese

    • @KevinUchihaOG

i think that is a cool detail. But it leaves me questioning why they didnt try to do the other languages accurate. Obviously they are speaking modern english instead of old portuguese for it to be understandable for moden american/western audience. But why didnt they want it to be understandable for a modern japanese audience? (maybe old japanese is intelligeable enough for modern japanese people that they dont need subtitles, but still weird that they went for accuracy for one language and not the other)

The Dutch were a neutral sea power during this time period, when the English was at war with the Spanish and Portuguese.

English is the substitute for Portuguese on the show. FYI, the actual people when these events took place were speaking Portuguese, and the person john's character is based on spoke Portuguese. The priest that came to Japan were Portuguese Jesuits. It would not make sense that if John is the first English man to get to japan, and they did not know what England is, that Japanese characters would speak English.

She's actually wrong a decent amount she just covers for herself by saying 'I know' when it's explained to her and when Lupas right they don't accept because they just assume he's wrong.

Game of Thrones was actually inspired by Shogun, not the other way around. 😉 Also, FYI, Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) has been a top actor in Japan for many years. You may remember him from THE LAST SAMURAI with Tom Cruise. He's since been in scores of movies, including BULLET TRAIN (as you noted), JOHN WICK 4 and tons of others.

They based John Blackthorn on William Adams (Miura Anjin) was an English navigator who sailed with a Dutch trading fleet to the far East and landed in Japan in 1600. He became a vassal under the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was bestowed with a title, lands and swords, and became the first SAMURAI from England.

This show is amazing. Every danm character .
I heard people complain the " Lead " is White, ... it'd based of a Historical figure. The dude was the dude depicted.
He was at his last Ends, and he did what he could.
He didn't come from a Rich Family, he wasn't a lord or religious traveller .
He was literally just a Man stuck in a world he barely understood .

I watched the tv series in the 80s which was amazing for its time. Sanada wanted this version to be more accurate. The decapitation was expected, but it still shocked me when it happened. The effects in this show are amazing. EVERYTHING about this series is FANTASTIC!!!! If they don't win at least 4 awards then Hollywood is full of sh##!!!!! Be prepared for allot more with the other episodes

The show is based on a book that was the literary "Game of Thrones" when it came out in 1975 (well, it took a couple of years to get to that point, but still..) as in, it was the thing everyone was talking about. The book is a fictionalized account of the true story of the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan until the Meiji Restoration (if you've seen the Tom Cruise movie, "The Last Samurai," then that takes place during the Restoration.) The characters are mostly real people with the names changed. Ishido in the book and show is Ishida in real life. Toranaga in the book and show is Tokugawa in real life. Blackthorne in the book and show is a guy named Adams in real life. Mariko Toda in the book and show is someone named Hosokawa Tama (or Hosokawa Gracia is you use her Christian baptismal name, which people in Japan usually do.) A lot of stuff is exaggerated and some things are down right incorrect, but for the most part the story does a good job of explaining the period between the death of the Taiko and the rise of the Shogunate. It leaves certain things out...for example, "Goroda" (Oda Nobunaga) was assassinated by the Akechi clan, which paved the way for the rise of one of his generals (Toyotomi Hideoshi) as his successor, known as the Taiko. What the story doesn't mention is who fed the Akechi the false information that led them to assassinate Goroda. Historians believe that it was Tokugawa who gave them the information that led them to kill Oda. Which is why, in the story, Toranaga has a soft spot for Mariko...her whole family died due to his plotting, and nobody knows it except him. That's never mentioned in the story so its not a spoiler or anything, but it is what happened in real life.

Speaking of the Meiji Restoration, I recommend this Japanese drama called Tobu ga Gotoku, which is based on another historical figure (Saigo Takamori) and takes place between the Bakumatsu period and the Meiji period.

The Pacific Ocean is big… huge! No one on their ship had never been past the bottom of South America before and they were following a sketchy map. John Blackthorn knew Asia was west but not how far west. A vast ocean and random storms with little opportunities to find safe islands to resupply… yeah they were in very very bad shape.
