  • The power of food is extraordinary. Every 33 seconds in the U.S. someone will die of cardiovascular disease, but you do not have to be a statistic.

For the first time, groundbreaking research is proving definitively that even patients who already have the disease, as well as those who are at high risk of developing it, can dramatically improve their heart health.

Dr. Neal Barnard discusses the analysis of nearly 2,000 patients and the effect that an infusion of nonanimal foods had on their cardiometabolic function.

The results point directly to the benefit of vegan and vegetarian diets to both prevent and, in many cases, reverse heart disease.

    Topic Discussed
    - How these findings differ from previous heart disease research
    - Alcohol's effect on blood pressure
    - Which foods are healthiest for the heart
    - The effect of animal protein on heart function
    - And more
Have a health question? Post it in the comments or chat and we’ll answer as many as possible during the live broadcast.

ug, how White person? I was on the last heart attack diet for over 8 years since 2011 and lost 135 pounds and kept it off until too much stress with my wife's health and deteriorating condition 4 years ago. I started eating crackers and cheerios out of the box for the crunch. I gained 60 pounds in about 5 months and I just can't stay strict to vegan anymore because most of it is so disgusting and too difficult and time consuming that I don't have and not physically able to do now at my age. Is there a better meal plan than Dr. Esselstyne has?

There is a test called liproprotein (a) that people shoudl get. Unlike other lipids, Lp(a) levels are not significantly influenced by changes in diet and lifestyle. However healthy lifestyle changes can still be an important way to reduce your risk of heart disease. Early detection of elevated Lp(a) allows for proactive interventions to mitigate potential cardiovascular risks. Testing for Lp(a) can provide valuable insights and aid your healthcare provider in tailoring personalized treatment plans to reduce your risk of heart disease.

We buy Adams brand (totally natural with only peanuts and salt) at Costco in Washington state. The oil and the crunchy peanuts rise to the top and I pour off the oil before mixing the peanuts in. LOVE this stuff, it's better than fresh-ground in my opinion!

There is peanut butter without salt available. Ingredients : Roasted peanutss. That's it. Added salt is not only unnecessary but harmful. So, easy these days, yet WFPB is way to go. Next level would be growing own peanuts and making own peanut butter. Stay healthy and keep up good work, friend.

Just a heads up that the standard PB2 powder product contains salt and sugar. You must look for its sister: PB2 Pure which is only defatted peanuts, no added salt or sugar. PB2 also makes a no added sugar/salt cashew powder too. They are pricey but a little goes a long way. Also, I think Responsible Medicine includes modeling behavior that keep our carbon footprint as low as possible. health and life itself requires a planet with clean air and water and temperatures surviveable long term. We are at a tipping point with climate change, polar ice is melting faster, the permafrost is melting and release methane, a much more potent greenhouse gas. Travel to a conference especially with Covid still circulating and disabling people with long Covid infections seems a poor decision. I would have attended a virtual conference, but could never justify in-person attendance.

If there is a condition incompatible with the plantbased diet is ulcerative colitis. Now my inflammation is down, no steroids and I have only the immune suppressing medication but years of flare- ups that followed destroyed my gut so badly that nutrient absorbtion is heavily compromised. I am skinny, struggling to gain weight and while I eat nuts, seeds and avocados in reasonable amounts, it is not enough for weight gain. I still rely on animal fat though I eat the fiber rich diet by dr Will B. A healthy person would gain weight naturally over time. Not me. People turn towards the plantbased diet for weight loss. I turn away from it because I have the opposite problem. I can still be " plant- forward" and aim to be 80 percent plantbased that works for many UC patients. But when they go for 100 percent they encounter unwanted weight loss and deficiencies. UC patients in general are prone to weight loss not weight gain and it is suggested they keep their BMI on a higher ( but still normal) level so as to have reserves when flare-ups occur and do not drop beyond healthy weight. So yes, there ARE conditions when you have to consider if a WFPB diet is good for you. IBD patients often have difficulties eating the right amount of calories on a vegan diet as they may experience painful symptoms when eating and therefore need calorie rich food. A raw vegan diet is a counter indication for anybody having absorbtion problems. A junk vegan diet is just as likely to cause flare- ups as the standard american meatbased diets ( I still like to have a vegan burger once a month as a treat). I am not in pain anymore and can eat full plates of food but lets be honest, I will not gain any weight from the big plate of bulgur salad I ate for lunch today as it is only 300kcal. Even with avocado toast for breakfast and my half cup of pumpkin seeds for snack I just cannot make it to reach and maintain healthy weight and not be undernourished. I have to throw in an egg a day, bites of cheese and at least one or two hearty meaty meals per week ( plus fish) to meet my needs. Everybody can be 80-90 % plantbased but not everybody is thriving by cutting out all animal foods. I still think that plant- forward is the way forward and do not advocate meatbased diets ( I also went for unprocessed foods). I will never be a vegan but my diet works for me.

Beef MBA graduates and nothing more. Money can get you anything .
One should instead look into veganism and that non-human animals aren't object and suffer greatly just like us human animals. We wouldn't murder humans and specific pets but would easily pay a worker/slave to end some innocent life for our few mins of taste buds and so that we can get "protein" or some imaginary health that can't be obtained on plant based diet despite the largest nutritionist body in usa backing it ?! . Many cultures around the world barely include meat in their food and (meat isn't even food , it's just dead body parts that we can't consume raw or imagine getting it ourself ) . We aren't "carnivores" by any means ,would die easily in wild if not for fruits and growing crops . It's not like meat has some magical properties either.
Imo it's just a single food that body isn't having trouble with in short term since there is no fiber and barely any carbs and no "anti-nutrient" either . Absolutely destructive otherwise for our health(mentally and physically) and earth in every possible way. Even If one is ignorant about the reality behind meat they would go mad (as most carnist) by remaining on that diet..
Just stay away from that tribe when you know the truth and as much as possible try to include healthy plant food in your current diet by graudually increasing or as how you feel better. Talk to a good plant based doctor ,countless healthy recipes and info shared by good people and communities across other social platforms . How does a diet consisting of "murd***d body parts" fix in all this is or is even a question is disgusting thought. Even though it might not be disgusting for those who grew up on it not knowing the truth or forced themselves to like it but it's still disgusting stuff if you let a child know the full truth ...
With that said, plant based diet isn't perfect either if you don't have the discipline and enough reasons to stick to it.
Just need to be compassionate and open minded and try to do what as much as possible so someone doesn't have to die for your laziness.
Some transition to it immediately and do well (probably or don't complain like dumb "ex"- vegans and carnists) and for others it might take months/years to reverse the bad stuff(especially treating underlying health issues if any is a must) previous diet did and to increase the good gut microbiome.
Though there are cases like genetics(like in case of gluten ,lactose intolerance) where it might not work and as said damaged immune system and disturbed and/or bad microbiome which can be probably be made worse or are more noticable by ingesting variety of plants without knowing what you are doing.
And then there is sweet ,processed ,inorganic things ,couple that with sedentary lifestyle ,stress which most can't escape from and you have a recipe for diaster no matter how healthy plants are. There is no magic ofcourse if you see but a lot of work for unhealthy individuals and weak minds fall to the easiest sort term result elimination diet like that keto which they claim "cured" them but they don't go back to plant based stuff again unless ofcourse when they are dying.

He's giving me three months without meds to see if I can improve them. I keep lapsing a little because my husband still eats meat. But now that I see it works better my blood results are going the next step is removing eggs and limiting dairy and cheese. Changing to soy milk. Taking a little getting used to. Love it in oat meal. If that doesn't work in 3 months. I will ask for another 3 months and adding good-quality fish. And if that doesn't work will go back on mild medication for Cholesterol.

Is mostly the polyphenols, antioxidants and medium chain triglycerides in foods ( that also helps undo the damage from the lectins )
Vegans naturally tend to eliminate highly processed foods which is where the damage comes from, also animal proteins from K1 cows is mainly where the food problem comes from as is with their cheeses, Though, once a week is better than more

@tonycollyweston6182 Thanks! Dr. Dayspring swears by the apo B test, and probably for a good reason.
He shoots down all kinds of ratios that others still use as predictors of CV events, but gives his approval (in the absence of an apo B test) to the use of the non-HDL cholesterol level as a reliable predictor of CV events. Others call it a surrogate for the apo B. He calls it the poor man's substitute of the apo B.
But the dilemma is that with TC at 144, LDL at 65 and non-HDL at 115 (target 130 or less), what do you do with triglycerides in the range of 192-249?
An apo B test will probably confirm what the non-HDL level suggests.
But no matter what these markers suggest, the triglyceride level is still high.
Given the other markers, the likely event may not be CV but pancreatitis!
Either one is a wonderful choice! 😉
      Thanks again!

Most informative -- thanks, you two! One question, though, which pertains to the unhealthy findings of alcohol. For the most part, this is really nothing new. I think most whole-food, entirely plant-based eaters know this. We always hear from the medical doctors that we should really, really abstain from alcohol or, at least, substantially reduce our intake. But no one ever offers an alternative of what we're supposed to do to get our buzz. I'm not trying to be funny. We drink alcohol for that buzz, so when we're told to abstain from it, we're never offered an alternative. Thus, a very substantial majority of us are going to continue to indulge in alcohol consumption, even knowing the health risks.

I’ve read Tequila made from 100% agave is the healthiest spirit you can consume, if you’re going to imbibe. It’s made completely from the Agave plant, which provides a number of health benefits, it has less sugar and fewer calories (64 vs 90/100 for 1 oz compared to other spirits) and because it’s 80 proof, you only have to have 1 or 2 1-oz servings, sipped slowly, to give you that “buzz” you may be craving. Sip it neat, no additives. Another way to drink it is to have a shot glass of homemade tomato-based bloody Mary (called “sangrita” you can Google it) and sip it alongside the shot of tequila. Just make sure the bottle says it’s 100% pure agave.

I am close to a year into eating WFPB and limiting my intake of sugar, oils, and salt but with these results, it looks like I am eating cookies, ice cream, and a gallon of soda a day. Since I eat quite healthily, the explanation I can come up with is a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Though at the moment I am actually vegan 3 days a week, pescatarian 1 day a week for 1 meal, and fasting 3 days a week at the moment to shed my excess weight. I am also resistance training on three of my feeding days and eating more than maintenance on the feeding days while trying to hit 1 gram of protein per centimeter of height to gain muscle while losing fat. If my bioimpedenve scale is to be believed, I have shed 33 lbs of fat while adding 6 lbs of muscle in the last month. I don't know that I think the muscle mass gains are accurate, but strength is improving so I I do believe over the course of the next year I will be able to add enough muscle to maintain my BMR.
