I was keto for 5+ years ~ felt great / looked great. Then had heart attack, which I believe was due to unhealthy fats and animal products. I thought I was doing the healthy thing for myself by being on keto. But unbeknownst to me, I was hurting myself.
It’s scary because keto is like a religion to some people, and it’s become so popular and widespread. I’m sure a lot of people will be hurt as a result
May I ask, what did you predominately eat when you did keto for 5 years? Was it predominantly animal products rich in saturated fats? Did you eat any vegetables at all, or was it basically majority animal products?
He says complex carbohydrates are not gonna spike your insulin. When he talks about sugar he means sugar which isn't attatched to its fiber as it would be originally in the whole food. Sugar (including syrups, refined flours) is as bad if not worse for heart health than saturated fat (including coconut).
Sadly, wouldn't be surprised if straight sugar was worse than saturated fat, since the deleterious effects seems to show up earlier in life. Both should be avoid though, that's a fair compromise.
I am hearing you address the issue of drugs to lower cholesterol. I just cant take any of them without nasty side affects like having it poison my hair and loose 3/4 of my hair in about 3 months. I was fighting Cholesterol and had to find what was causing the inflammation and it looks like what was left was some dairy that was sending out cholesterol to patch the holes in my arteries. I was known that I had an inflammation issue more than 5 years before I had to go to the CATH lab last Dec. I had very few symptoms that i was having anything serious going on but the LAD was 90 % blocked. My cholesterol had been Inching up over those 5 years and nothing was stopping it. I went on a whole food plant diet with almost no Meat, dairy or refined foods and I dropped the LDL from 223 to 185 in about 2-3 months. I think I can drop to 145 or less but I am so sensitive to meds and some foods and eating food away from home is a nightmare. I don’t use milk but I could without feeling bad until they homogenized it. I was still using a small amount of cream and ice cream but that is gone too since I noticed it was making me fat. I didn’t cook meat at home so only ate a hamburger or fish if I was in town and had to get something to eat to keep from crashing but even that was too much. I use some bread but it has to be good stiff bread or I will not buy it - no soft white bread in our house. Don’t drink or smoke either and we do not drink water from the tap either. i am listening to my body so as I clear out my arteries I dont work too hard and make my heart need more blood flow than it can get right now. I have to slow down if the little finger edge of my right hand and the finger tips get tingly and a bit numb - that is my warning sign that I must slow down and let my heart not have too work as hard. That is working well to tell this type A person that if I dont slow down I will have a heart attack. Hope what I have shared will help someone else. By the way I dont use any oils and very little sugar and do corn syrup solids either
We've all challenged ourselves at some point in our life. News year's resolutions, meatless Mondays, exercise more, etc... Can you go 28 days? No one is asking you to go plant based forever. No one is asking you to exercise forever. But can you do it for a short 28 days? Do it and you will see a change that is unexplainable. If you choose to go back to what you were doing, fine. I will bet that no-one will.
Artery Inflammation caused by sugar/carbs are healed by cholesterol, which means the body needs to naturally produce more cholesterol to cure the damage, if so, the problem is not the cholesterol but the sugar/carbs instead, which are causing the inflammation. Am I correct?
No you are not correct! Saturated fats (meats, fish, dairy, eggs) are inflammatory but so are sugar, processed foods, preservatives, colors, and artificial flavors.
Form think thanks too!🎉 Thank you for bringing this out. Whole grains are so hard to find in the convenience breakfast cereals and frozen isles. I’d like to find some salt and oil free products😊I have this dream it will happen. In the meantime this is somewhat labor intensive.
A new "burger" coming out is the Impossible Burger. It is made with heme iron (so that it tastes like beef and is also the same type of iron in beef which we know to be unhealthy) and coconut oil which is 85% saturated fat. This burger is definitely not meat but is definitely not healthy. If one eats whole foods one doesn't have to worry about what is in the 'product' that one is eating. Just eat a whole food naturally grow and you don't have to worry.
I drink 16 ounce fruit smoothies everyday, 2 to 4 times a day. My A1C has gone down from 6.4 to 5.6. The sugar in the whole fruit does not increase blood sugar, b/c of the fiber. My fasting blood sugar has also gone from 110 to 75.
overall, McDougall has a good message but I'm skeptical about his high starch approach versus someone like Joel Ferman who also emphasizes a plant based diet, but not so heavy on starch. And certainly doesn't downplay sugar. I think one key is to understand the impact on insulin, which is implicated any many diseases and is anti-aging as well. Would be valuable to collect insulin/Hba1c, and other data, on people who eat a McDougall type diet vs a Furman type diet. My guess is that high starch will have higher (more detrimental) levels of insulin even is better than most Americans.
*Peter* When you get down to what ends up on the plate, my impression from reading books and menus from both is that there really isn't that much different between McDougall and Furman. Due to the very low calorie density t is simply not possible to eat enough non-starchy vegetables to get enough daily calories or even a substantial portion of one's calories. The only alternative is to eat foods with high enough calorie density to allow a person to get enough calories in a the volume and weight that a person can eat. Whole fruit has a higher calorie density and can serve as a source of a substantial portion of one's calories, but whole starches (not just potatoes, but also intact grains and legumes) have a higher (but not ridiculous) calorie density and so serves the foundation of calories in both diets. I would love if somebody would take several weeks of menus from the McDougall plan and the Furman plan and break it down to the percentage of calories coming from non-starchy vegetables, fruits, nuts & seeds, and starchy vegetables to really see how much difference there really is. If this has already been done, I would love a link to such a comparison.
papparocket I think the real difference is in the micro not macro nutrient ratio. I would definitely say that anyone who says superior health is at the end of the macro to micro nutrient ratio would be the winner. Greger etc. has also stated the classic "Micrountrient bang" for the "macronutrient buck". I don't think you will find any real truth at the end of macro vs. macro unless we start talking to much protein or fat.
+B K I;m reading McDougall's book now and am defiantly an admirer of his work, but it's good to point out that he's not a vegan, he doesn't drop the animal products when it comes to social matters with friends and family.
I foresee the day when all of the plant based doctors pool their resources to establish a National Franchise of Restaurants of plant based offerings to compete with the Fat food franchises, The only restaurant available to me as a vegan is Chipoltle's.
There was an excellent interview with Kim Williams, M.D. by Ocean Robbins that I listened a month ago and I would like to find a copy of that interview it had some great recommendations of food an medicine for heart conditions with very high cholesterol. I am glad that more and mroe doctors are going vegan or at least vegetarian path.
The real problem is the concept of "opinion" in the face of "fact". "There are two kinds of cardiologists. Vegan's and those that haven't read the data." The data is clear. "Opinions" are the problem. The only concern with the doctor's observation is that the terms "Vegan" and "Whole Food / Plant Based" are treated as synonymous, and they are not.
So inspirational, thank you so much! 1 question: the article "animal protein kills you" on the American medical journal association 1st august 2016, I can't find it online. Can you help? Cheer!
Anyone have the link to the JAMA Aug 1 2016 article about meat that Dr. Williams references at about minute 53 (or so)? I can't find it, wondering if anyone else can. Thanks!
I thought the link between dietary cholesterol and cholesterol/plaque in arteries was debunked years ago. There is so much confusion surrounding this. Some say keto, others say Ornish, etc.
Just hearing this interview for the first time. Great stories that I hadn’t heard! When I heard ‘vegan propaganda unit’ I thought ‘Law and Order - VPU.’
I am listening to you talk about sugar, fat and Iron from animal blood and the probation on fat and blood have been around very long ago. The Bible clearly states that blood and fat are not to be eaten and met was only allowed to be eaten after the flood to shorten man life. Oh, there it is so we can die earlier from what we eat! I remember when High Fruitose Corn Sugar came around when my Dad was in cooks school in the early 1980 and I . as interesting to work with but we didn’t use it long. I also started having seizures after the heath food he was selling we exposing me to MSG.
yeah but my understanding of what Kim said was all sugars no matter what had the same affect on insulin levels...So 4 apples blended in a smoothie is as bad as drinking the equivalent of a bag of sugar...that's what i thought he was saying
I get what you're saying...but just homing in on the sugar I'm sure he's saying sugar from fruit is the same as sugar from refined sources...as regards increases in insulin....maybe Rich understands better what he meant? But it's kinda looking at not all fruits are equal and avoid high fructose fruits such as Apples and pears...Jesus it would get to the point you can't eat anything...think i'll stick with my fruits
Yeah I understand everything has to be taken into context but he does also say Sugar is bad full stop and we should try to eliminate it...I do know a few runners who eliminate sugar, still eat meat..But suppose that's the point of Rich's podcasts...gets people talking. Strange thing is I was alergic to apples before i went plant based and now i can eat them...I may need to limit them again..:)
Jan Spatschek true, pretty sure these guys were eliminating refined sugars...which suppose eliminates most processed foods as they add sugar to everything. There's an ultra runner 'the fruitarian' and all he eats is fruit...wonder how he fits into the whole scheme of things...makes you realise all the dots aren't quite connected yet
Me too. He could probably use some heme iron. Rhonda Patrick and many other scientists have explained eloquently why it's important to include that micro-nutrient in our diets.
Vegetarian to assume that if you eat meat you eat all kinds of shitty foods but the same thing that makes a vegetarian healthy makes a keto diet healthy it’s the greens man. It’s the nitric oxide man look it up just because a 4 ounces of meat with dinner doesn’t mean I eat packaged processed food and I certainly don’t eat a bunch of carbs I don’t need any except what’s in the 9 cups of greens I eat
how come you dont have dr. lustig on? is it because he says either lifestyles work? both carnivore and vegan both work for health...can you please have him on
Holy cow he didnt know The Fat You Eat Is The Fat You Wear is John McDougall’s. Just shows he is no super expert. All generic MDs have limited knowledge. Great guy though Only discovered diet in 2003, that’s not very long ago considering he’s at end of his career and the knowledge has been out for a long time.
Do you still think saturated fat causes heart disease? Seems like most cardiologists I see on youtube no longer believe saturated fat causes it. Hasn't there been new studies that show otherwise?

There are those who had a heart attack and stint and never had another heart attack 40 years later on a 90% organic diet with moderate exercise...still going strong. I refused bypass surgery, by the way.
Dr. Williams is incredibly impressive great podcast.
Yet another awesome fact based presentation. Great interview. Dr. Williams is super knowledgeable.
This was a great interview, thank you!
Big fan of Rich but had missed this episode. One of his best and most important. It's hard trying to keep up with the data and forming my own path, when physicians / cardiologists do not keep up with the data
absolutely amazing interview...Dr Williams you are one of my heros.....
Dr Kim has a lot of class!!! Thank you rich. Rare quality this Dr
Inflammation from sugar is looking like the real culprit. Glad he is recognizing this. Mcdougall and esselylton dont seem to speak about this.
It's not just one bad guy, as Rich Roll said
Superb interview! Learned a lot.
Watching this again. I do love Dr Williams
That was outstanding! Thank you
It’s so obvious that most patient suffering from all this deadly virus are been enslaved to the antiviral and other supplementary Orthodox medicine just to help suppress the virus and not a cure. I have been with herpes virus since 2012 until I was introduce by a blogger who also narrated her story online on how she was cured of Hsv virus after using DR PETER herbal Medicine. This is a year and 2 weeks since I was delivered from Hsv. All thanks to God for using this Great herbalist to heal me. I have promise to keep telling good about DR PETER ,his medicine comes with no side effects, dont sit back and get your life ruined by some bad virus Please fill free to share Your problems with him and don’t forget to tell him I did refer you to Him. Thanks.write him on email at peteroare0@gmail.com He can as well render help in other diseases too.
You can also contact doctor Peter on whatsapp +234 816 161 5389
Kim is awesome!
Always love to hear Dr. Williams speak.
Wonderful Doctor and interview.
Awesome interview!
Thank you for sharing this super important message.
@@user-zq3qd8ui5o Tons of eggs and meat. Minimal veggies
No carbs, no sugar. Lots of fats.
Excellent interview. Thank You.I'm still researching a clear answer on fruit sugar.
Bravo... great interview!!!
What a beautiful man!
Can someone link me the study Dr. Williams is referring to at 11:35? I'd like to see that graph myself for reference purposes.
Great video! The mic noise is pretty loud and annoying though you might want to turn the gain down on the mic
Plant based burger substitutes are disgusting!!!!🤮🤢 filled with crap !! make your own vege burgers way better for you.
I drink 16 ounce fruit smoothies everyday, 2 to 4 times a day. My A1C has gone down from 6.4 to 5.6. The sugar in the whole fruit does not increase blood sugar, b/c of the fiber. My fasting blood sugar has also gone from 110 to 75.
has anyone got the graph Kim talks about at min 11:35 and could share the link? Thanks!
What is the keynote speech he shares with his patients and other doctors?
56:55???
❤ me and my heart thank you!
What an amazing interview.
Wonderful
I here about diabetes with heart disease almost every time. Many fruits and veg. are high in sugar. what give????
McDonald's advert at the beginning, gah! Thanks for this wonderful interview!
What about Dr. MacDougal's research on sugar?
overall, McDougall has a good message but I'm skeptical about his high starch approach versus someone like Joel Ferman who also emphasizes a plant based diet, but not so heavy on starch.
If this has already been done, I would love a link to such a comparison.
papparocket
I think the real difference is in the micro not macro nutrient ratio.
And what about Kempners research on sugar?
+B K I;m reading McDougall's book now and am defiantly an admirer of his work, but it's good to point out that he's not a vegan, he doesn't drop the animal products when it comes to social matters with friends and family.
I foresee the day when all of the plant based doctors pool their resources to establish a National Franchise of Restaurants of plant based offerings to compete with the Fat food franchises, The only restaurant available to me as a vegan is Chipoltle's.
Thank You!
So so good rich! From NZ.
Fantastic job guys. Both of you..!
Wish there were two cardiologists here with diferring opinions discussing these topics and looking for common ground.
Please invite dr Kim again
Fantastic.
Just hearing this interview for the first time. Great stories that I hadn’t heard! When I heard ‘vegan propaganda unit’ I thought ‘Law and Order - VPU.’
No mention of Organic vs GMO?
They can't talk about everything. You can find that information on other podcasts.
Why does the American Heart Assoc. recommend canola and corn oils as "healthy fats"?
As well as the current ones
This earlier shows are great
Great info. Great Man...
US of A...
Please change your food habits.
: )
if your gonna follow one experts advice on nutrition and heart health; the head of the college of cardiology.
14:00 ‘statin compared to plant based diet.
After listening to this I realize Nina Teicholz is truly a heroine.
So sugar from raw fruit is ok? it's only the processed sugar added to foods
fructose from fruits breaks down much differently in the body... fiber helps that.
yeah but my understanding of what Kim said was all sugars no matter what had the same affect on insulin levels...So 4 apples blended in a smoothie is as bad as drinking the equivalent of a bag of sugar...that's what i thought he was saying
Sugar isn't a problem in the context of a high carb, low fat diet. If one is eating a standard western diet, then yes, sugar is going to be an issue
Yes sugar is a problem be it from to much from fruits, simple carbs or the standard western diet.
did he really say that refined carbs are worse for your heart than Sat fat/cholesterol. theres no way thats true
Make podcast with Millet man of India Mr khader vali
This guy contradicts many things I have heard on the web before, like complex CARBS do not drive insulin upwards...
Inspiring.
It'd be nice to see you interview Rhonda Patrick. I think she has a much deeper scientific understanding about nutrition than Kim Williams.
TG36 GR true
I did www.richroll.com/podcast/rhonda-patrick/
Nice, I'll listen to it. I hope you guys talked about what causes heart disease. So many things Kim says in this video seem biased and irresponsible.
TG36 GR He sounds weak to me
Me too. He could probably use some heme iron. Rhonda Patrick and many other scientists have explained eloquently why it's important to include that micro-nutrient in our diets.
How was he shocked that his LDL was 190? He had to have been at least in his mid to late 30's by then. Had he never had a lipid panel done before?
Pre Covid seating. Those were the days
YOU CANNOT TELL PEOPLE!!! they must be willing to research and change on their own, It's like smokers, drunks and junkies. I've tried.
how come you dont have dr. lustig on? is it because he says either lifestyles work? both carnivore and vegan both work for health...can you please have him on
For me everything is better with both low fat and low carb....
I literally couldn’t watch this. I listened, but couldn’t watch. The lighting was terrible! That brightness behind them was obnoxious.
Kempner rice diet - cures all
Holy cow he didnt know The Fat You Eat Is The Fat You Wear is John McDougall’s.
Rich roll podcasts are good but would be better without so much filler. Way too much rambling.
Move the microphones or get better ones.
The fat you eat is the fat you wear is John MacDougall.
Rich, why are you using a plastic water bottle :(
*Social Justice: noun
justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.*
Plastics have nothing to do with social justice. It is an issue that affects health and the environment.
