I could see it being a situation of “the ships where in a high stage of completion in the shipyard” with the later ships based on the ISD being modifications on the common and fairly cheap ISD hulls. Not to mention the manufacturing infrastructure was captured mostly intact on worlds like Kuat which would have an easier time producing ISDs instead of the various Moncalamari ships. R&D costs money,production machinery costs money,and the New Republic captured both at zero cost from the empire.
Moreover, the galaxy is probably drowning in warehouses full of spare/redundant ISD parts. That's one thing I really like about the Canon Starhawk - it's taking advantage of preexisting materials and labor.
The ISDs weren’t cheep at all, according to wookieepedia building just one ISD cost the annual economic output of several star systems. Also the ISDs need very large crews and where prone to mechanical problems.
I agree a fair number of ISD's the New Republic had were probably ones that had been captured more than halfway complete. When your pressed for warships finishing a half or three quarter built ship in a shipyard you just captured is far cheaper and quicker if you already have the parts available. If the fledgling New Republic had a serious shortage of in Legends it was a shortage of Capital Ships!
short answer: the rule of cool. long answer: they probably did that so that they could make their own later on, which they did. and also because they had people from the Imperial Remnant join their ranks, some of them even had Imperial Star Destroyers, they carried out the functions and purposes they were made for very well.
It is quite simple. Half of New Republic was the Empire. ISD if used properly was a good ship and New Republic inherited lot of infrastructure based around this class. Like scrapping all ISD's was dumb interpretation of New Canon (also not actually accurate also as there were implications that some ISD's wre still used).

They didn't build them so much as used recycled Panthers that were laid on the sides of French streets and only used them in parades until they built a proper French tank. In fact they did a bunch of tests to see how they could improve the Panther and they found that it was so unreliable that you might as well built a new tank instead of fixing it. They mostly used American Chaffees and Sherman tanks in their own imperial attempts to keep a hold on their colonies cause those were far more reliable and better suited then the heavy tank that was two tons lighter than an IS 2 without the armour nor firepower to go with the weight.
@@michaelandreipalon359 yes, while tooling up and designing an alternative they had Panther formations in the French army, I would need to look up how many, but it was a decent number Edit: 2 regiments used them, the 6eme regiment de cuirassier, and the 503e RCC, both had about a squadron, and used them until spares ran out. It was a stop gap in case the Soviets decided to kick off.

I always assumed it was a case of there being just that many unfinished hulls and it was simpler and faster to finish them than to break them for parts and material for new ships.
Not to mention all of the production and maintenance facilities that would have to be retooled across the galaxy and the thousands of star destroyers scattered across the galaxy in various states of functionality. This isn't even getting into the fact that defected imperial command crews would have be trained to operate these vessels. For the fledgling new republic government it makes sense to leverage these and divert resources that would be wasted on setting up new military production infrastructure towards building new government institutions and programs.
"Why did the New Republic keep making IMPERIAL STAR DESTROYERS?" ... too keep the Kuat Shipyards employed, cause the Kuat people aren't building stuff they don't design. ;^)
That and all the infrastructure is already in place, so while a new ship design might be better/cheaper by itself, the startup cost to tool up would be a huge additional investment compared to a tweaked ISD design.

Especially those that show only in large scale production&deployment. When those new designs show unexpected flaws you don't want to be caught with your proverbial pants down!
My guess is, because they work just fine The ISD id a solid ship that fulfils a role on most fleet with pretty good shielding, good armour and very, very good firepower Plus its already established, spare parts and maintenance designed to care for it already exists It fits a role in the new republic pretty well, a main line warship that could hold its own against another of the same or bigger size. Its weakness against smaller ships could could also be covered with a few dedicated support ships of the republic or a few squadrons of X-wing independent of any carrier So yea thats what i think
the only big downside is its faster than most support ships, meaning any support fleet would either have to be unusually fast to keep up, or (what actually happend) the ISD 2 would just lumber along at half throttle or something.
@@AmdUlkoinen Bridge was actually well shielded and tower actually didn't have that many people inside holding mostly infrastructure. Also ISD did have second more secured bridge, but cocky Imperial commanders commonly didn't bother to move there during the combat. If used with anti-fighter escort in intended role as Assault Ship, then it was actually quite excellent (alongside Tactor used as Battleship). Problem was that Empire did send them unescorted to patrol systems, where they could easily fall in the ambush.
The problem isnt so much that the ship isnt good as much as its not super efficient. Large crew size and maintenance intensive, while not having great firing arcs on alot of its weapons. A modest redesign would improve its functionality and reduce its cost at the same time. Personally I think modifying all of the ISD's with new weapon placements (Copy the procursator optimally) and streamlined crew facilities would reduce their upkeep and improve functionality

I actually have a book where a Dathomirean Witch actually snaps her fingers , and severs Luke Skywalkers brain and body connection he collapses to the floor ,and has to literally use all the force he can gather from the entire living jungle to save himself. He then starts to understand more about layering himself in the force. Putting up barriers to his emotions , and to his body. This is why more of the older Jedi seem to walk slower they are literally walking shields. Always prepared for anything.

Ask Eck: Can starships “throttle” their hyper drives to different speeds or were they just on/off? It always seemed weird to me that all the Alliance ships at Endor with their different drive ratings could jump together and emerge together.
They can. I remember reading a book from Mara's perspective that the hyperdrives of the ship she was in was going at beyond it's normal level. Also it makes sense from a strategic perspective to be able to coordinate long distance jumps to finish at the same time.
I think they can, I won't pinpoint a page but I believe in Thrawn's trilogy there were some orders from the great admiral that specified hyperspace speed when moving his flagship

Another factor could be that producing any kind of ship requires infrastructure to actually build them. A completely new design would need shipyards capable of their construction. E.g., wouldn't KDY need time and extra resources in order to re-design their production capabilities in order to transition to building other types of ships?
We have multiple examples of using the force inside another person's body, one of which you actually covered. Gethzerion actually killed an entire army of Zsinj's stormtroopers by causing brain hemorrhages. In the KotOR games, the Wound line of darkside force powers literally starts with the base power being described as causing painful spasms in the target's lungs, before going up to the Choke and Kill powers.
Are you dumb? Starhawk was build as dedicated SSD killer (also it is ship from Legends). They didn't actually scrap most ISD's, especially as half of New Republic is the Empire. In fact famous Leia's ISD is specifically kept canon, even if they didn't yet confirm its faith.

The reason why it did have this huge tractor beam in canon, was to push larger ships into planets gravity walls. That is literally the only reason why those ships were build. Most of New Republic was actually ex-Imperial and they equipment didn't magically disappear. It is just one of things we don't see off screen, like Death Star blowing up Rebellion Lucrehulk on the way to Yavin.

@@TheRezro Also its not from Legends. It was mentioned first in the Aftermath trilogy, which is technically EU but is Canon EU. If you're going to call someone dumb, which you never should, then get your facts straight. Any reference to a Starhawk in Legends is actually either a shuttle used around the time of the 2nd galactic civil War or two types of speeder bikes, the Starhawk and the Starhawk 2b. The ship is a Canon creation that is absolutely a cool idea that is entirely impractical. It makes no sense to waste time with the process when captured ISDs work fine. The only reason is to help PR, as the ISD is a symbol of oppression. However the legends rebellion and new Republic using it logistically makes sense, and is realistic as hell as discussion definitely took place over whether to scrap it or whatever but some bean counter, probably Borsk and his sect, decided it'd cost too much or weaken the navy for too long.
With the question about using the Force inside someone’s body- It’s possible, but difficult. The Force and the various abilities that are possible through it rely largely on the ability of the mind to decide what it wants and believe that it’s possible. For the first part, you need to have a firm picture in your mind of what you want to do. This is one reason Jedi use hand motions while using powers like persuade or push - it helps them visualize the end result.the physical motion itself helps focus the mind, but isn’t intrinsically necessary. For the second part, you have to actually know what you’re doing is possible and rely on intense focus to prevent intrusive thoughts or doubt from interfering with the ability. For example, Yoda and Luke’s favorite exchange: “I don’t believe it!” “That is why you fail.” The Force can do basically do anything you believe it can, so long as that belief is strong enough to put aside doubts. So using the Force inside a body would likely require two things. The first is a reasonable knowledge of the anatomy in question, to help you visualize the target area and what you want to happen. The second is that you know for a fact that it’s possible to do what you want to do. Bardan Jusik (SPOILERS FOR REPUBLIC COMMANDO NOVELS) uses the Force to heal brain damage at one point. I don’t recall the phrasing, but it was involved.

Let's look at Darth Sidious's Eclipse. It was a huge damn ship was way bigger than the ISD because it needed that space to actually have a laser cannon that WASN'T AS EFFECTIVE as the Death Star cannon. It needed to be that big just to house a smaller version of it that couldn't blow up a planet but render in unhabitable. While apparently they can just take a normal ISD and slap a cannon on it and call it a day? That's BS.

What didn't make sense was scrapping 25000 ISD's for ego reasons. If we want example of actual lazy it would be Xyston, where Jar Jar Abrams forget even about size of windows, rehashing model from Rogue One. Anyway it is actually Lucas Film what is responsible of Sequel fiasco as they were given free hand, except Disney forget that thy didn't make successful SW movie from the 80's and new management (hired by Lucas I remind) pick usual corporate BS with celebrate directors and ignoring the lore. Gladly Disney finally intervened and give creative control to Jon Favreau.
I think the reason they used them was mostly as a deterrent, similar to the Tarkin Doctrine but with more peaceful intentions in mind. Just imagine how terrifying it would be for pirates and other outlaws to run into an ISD expecting to mow down a few TIEs, only for a squadron of black X-Wings and A-Wings to fly out of it instead.
It would be like the German army denying Panthers during the Cold War era. Sure they replaced it with the Leopard, but the Panther is definitely better than throwing rocks.
My belief is that the 'new' Destroyers was retrofitted old Imperial Destroyers. Droid armies require at least factories which aren't highly mobile while being a target for the opposition.
#askeck: I just noticed in RoTS when Vader is slaughtering the separatists on Mustafar, in one brief clip (1:35:07), he appears to be in pure agony. Is this a contradiction between the novelization (where he was thoroughly enjoying it) and movie, or is there an explanation for it?
I think Coran Horn's lightsaber was pretty cool. The ability to change its length and the double tap to turn off feature... It's going a long way back but I think the blade changed colour when it changed modes when he first found it.
On the "Could a force user use the force on someone's body parts" - Absolutely yes. There was a Star Wars comic depicting Darth Vader targeting an Jedi Alien's heart with Force Grip directly (I don't remember the specific comic unfortunately, but it's a good example) as a form of torture. As with all things with the Force, it requires stout and competent manipulation of the Force, something Darth Vader had in spades. You also see targeted Force manipulation used by Obi-Wan Kenobi against Anakin Skywaler/Darth Vader during their Mustafar duel in the movie novel. He momentarily disabled Anakin's robotic hand that caused Anakin to drop his Lightsaber (if you remember the scene where Anakin is without his lightsaber in the movie and charges at Obi-Wan, that's what happened even though the movie doesn't actually show the scene described in the book)
I could see a situation where the republic took over shipyards where many star destroyers were being built/repaired...I think it would be cheaper to finish those than building new republic designs and scrapping the imps.
Great video! Glad the Ask Ecks feature is back. When I read about the NR ISDs in EU, my impression was that they were heavily refitted ships that had been captured, surrendered, or otherwise acquired. The NR would definitely want to reduce the crew complement needed, and hangar space would be modified to handle NR fighters. By the YV War, I'll bet the only original ISD part left would be the hull itself. They wouldn't be much different than the Invincible-class dreadnoughts used by the CSA in the Han Solo Trilogy. What ancient SW ships would you like to see refitted and fielded in the OT era? I would like to see the Jedi corvette-style cruiser and the Sith Interceptor from the Old Republic era brought back. Nice little ships....
i also think using the force to affect internal organs or workings of droids and ships is something completely possible but would require a deep understanding of the workings of the particular being or machine to be possible -- the force isn't magic, it requires focus and intention so while you could undo the insides of someone or something you would have to have the knowledge of *what* it is you're affecting be it an organ or component!
For the turbolaser question - you could also go the X-Wing game series route - full power to weapons would just allow them to keep the capacitors filled longer. While it would give the guns of a Venator longer time at full power, you wouldn't get some sort of superturbolaser from putting everything in one gun. And it neatly covers all the other dowhnsides overcharging a gun would entail (burnouts etc)
Another portion of keeping the ISDs in service, is because they were intended to be multirole ships well suited to independent operations. They were a respectable gunnery platform, possessed a good hangar, and were built to carry a good enough number of troops. So when you had a number of splinter factions, pirates, and warlords that needed to be brought to heel, they couldn't just be dropped out of hand. Plus the New Republic was probably poor when it was formally organized and for a good while after, so...
I really thought the anakin solo was a brand new star destroyer. I always assumed it was simply because the new Republic needed ships badly and the infrastructure to build Imperial class star destroyers was already in place and efficient.

My theory about why the Alliance not using droids was that it was a PR decision. The galaxy just went through a droid war and only the bad guys use droid armies.
On the topic of sending all the reactor power to the ships guns: Even if the guns can handle that amount of power (no way they could if you think about how much power a ship would need to make) Turbolasers need a recharge time, brief sure but it's still like a second or two before they can fire again. It's mentioned in... The Courtship of Princess Leia I think when the Hapans come in and explain why they have saucer ships. It's legit only because of that recharge time the guns need. Their ships are designed to fire a gun and move it out of position for another that can fire right away. That gives them the ability to fire much faster.
Hapans turbolasers are very outdated and recharge much slower than other turbolasers, that limitation doesnt exist for most other factions. Its specifically because Hapan turbolaser tech is out of date.

In Star by star, the shipyards at Bilbringi were producing ISD's. Maybe they were retrofitting or repairing them. I'd have to check again, but I remember them mentioning they were being built.

Not shield bulbs, they are long rang scanners used for targeting hence the high height. Rotj executor lost its shield from the rebel fleet concentrating fire on its bridge, not the destruction of the bulb. Richard edlund even calls them long range radars when describing the scene in the movie. Makes sense why the ssd couldn’t shoot down the A wing if they are used for targeting. Assume they are shield simple because of a succession of scenes would be a casual fallacy.
If I'm remembering correctly there's the odd mention of the New Republic finishing Star Destroyers under construction when they took shipyards like Kuat. Kuat's legends page on wookiepedia actually specifically mentions that during the Yuuzhan Vong war that KDY produced many ships for the NR during the Vong war especially Star Destroyers. This could have been where I got confused about a throwaway line and it doesn't _specifically_ say the new SDs were Imperial class rather than Nebula for example. It would make sense to however to continue building ISDs from Imperial shipyards, they already have the assembly lines and processes for mass production of ISDs whereas for example the Mon Calamari Cruisers would have involved a significant retraining, retooling and reorganisation. As well, I seem to remember reading about the Nebula being much more expensive than an ISD? It could make sense to continue producing ISDs until the Nebula and the other ships of the New Ship Program were fully ready for scale production

Also keep in mind that the Kuat ship yards specialize in producing SD class ships. It would take a lot of work and money to refit them to make more Mon Cal ships so it would be easier to just have it keep producing SDs until other ship yards can replace them.

@@papapalps2415 Because SW Hyperspace travel relies on transferring the ship into a different dimension, in which objects in realspace still have an impact. Warp tech, as I understand it, creates a time-space bubble around a ship, which pushes it through the warped space, thus vastly increasing speed. Since places like the Unknown Regions have anomalies specifically within hyperspace, but necessarily not in realspace, it isn't outside the realm of ideas to think that Warp Technology would be more effective in those areas.

Mara in the contemplation is very certain that Kyp lacks the ability to defend against a subtle attack, and that by the time he rallies to strike back in defense he would be too physically weak to win. Most Force powers, especially those involving the mind and will may be thwarted if their opponent has enough mind and will of their own. We see this addressed by Darth Bane when discussing essence transfer in that a person with enough will could defeat a Dark Lord who made the attempt, even if that person was not Force sensitive.
I take it back, the HAET-221. Watched one of your vids on hidden ships in ROTS and realized that's what I was talking about. Just didn't recognize it cause in the hanger you see it from the front, and the best shot of it is in the rear.
Also they took over several Imperial Shipyards that were already tooled to build ISD's. So retooling for different or newer ships would have taken time when they were in desperate need of ships (though it did happen eventually).
Simple, the shipyards were already set up to build Star Destroyers. It was cheaper to use them as is, rather than completely redesign everything for a new format of ship model.
There’s also the fact that the New Republic was constantly at war and didn’t have the funds for the R&D process of building an entirely new ship design when there was a perfectly good one already in existence. It also was much cheaper to just updated the systems on the ISDs than to make an entirely new ship.
Droid are good for specialized roles. Like using droiddekas as heavy infantry/support. Commando droids for spec ops or protection for executives. Or field tons of Vulture driod that are headed by elite organic captain's leading the squadrons.
when dual wielding in real life the rare times it was done, it was always with one sword shorter than the other. long blade to catch the strike initially, then either transferred to the small blade to strike with the long, or manuaver around the long blade with the short while binding the enemy blade.
There was a cool DS game of a twilek with only one lekku. She was a bounty hunter of some sort that ended up helping the rebels with the assistance of a little security bot.
About those possible New-Republic-built ISDs, I would guess that most of those were either refits of captured imperial ships, or partially built hulls sitting at various shipyards... however, I think New Republic actually built brand new ISD's simply for the reason that some shipyards were set up to build those, and some shipyards would rather build their old designs than to adjust their facilities for foreign-desgned ships simply due to prestige (with KDY being the prime suspect)... this is probably why you had new MC90 (Mon Calamari/Dac), Nebulas (REC... Rothana? Fondor? Corellia? Sullust?), Republics (RSD at Rendilli) and quite possibly a few ISD-IIs (KDY at Kuat), all within roughly the same capability...
What also might be considered is that there probably multiple Star Destroyers in mid-production. They might have been close to completion that it would have been cheaper to complete rather than scrapping.
If you’re talking about the Empire, the Venator didn’t fit into the Tarkin Doctrine, and if you’re talking about the New Republic then they just didn’t have the credits or the time they would need to totally retool their ship yards while they were pretty much constantly at war

The power capacities outlined in the ICS are not "ridiculous." We're talking about ships that can power drives that cross the galaxy in a day and weapons that can vaporize asteroids in a single shot and slag planetary surfaces in hours. That requires a lot of power. Minimalism is what's ridiculous.

Thing's like removing fighters for turboalsers and placing them on them on different part's of the ship, removing un needed or non effective parts of the ship like bridges, structure, hanger etc. But also keep it still recognisable as a Venator, like a combat model.
Going off the lightsaber question: I've read that lightsabers with Krayt dragon pearls as being more powerful than the average saber, and even changes the usual ignition noise to more of a howling, pressumedly like the roar of a Krayt dragon. My question is: what does "more powerful" actually mean? Like, would it burn hotter, or give the wielder some kind of power boost? Or booth? Could it have the capability to cut or pierce beskar? What color would it be?
Probably because he was worried Qiu-Gon could get more Jedi to think like him. The Jedi were corrupted politics and the dark side. They no longer were pure vessels for the force. Unable to fully carry out it's will. Qiu-Gon was thought to be a gray Jedi by a lot of people but others scoffed at the idea saying he isn't a gray Jedi for doing what he's doing, that the Jedi were supposed to be like Qiu-Gon and he was the only one sticking to what a Jedi should be. I'm guessing if others did follow Qiu-Gon they would have realize what's been going on a sense the plot of the dark side before the clones could have been brought into the picture. No clones, no order 66, the whole plan fails.

In terms of Twi'leks with lost lekku there is also Rianna Saren who lost one during her time as a slave when her master cut it off. She later replaced it with a prosthetic but was always a bit ashamed of having a false one and apparently shunned by other Twi'leks who I assume regarded her as being incomplete or pitiful for having only the one true lekku.

Hell, we have long had politicians canceling needed military projects and procurement, not because the items weren't needed, but to score points politically, so why would that change, just because a society was more technologically advanced then we are now. The RA didn’t need a major Battle Droid Army but they could’ve made droids for specific purposes. Building Commando Droids armed with DH-17, Handheld Shields, along with variants of grenades and use them in boarding or infiltration operations. They could’ve been built from raw materials from scrapyards which was mostly unmonitored and built within large bulk freighters. A CR90 with a dozen commando droids and a company of organic troopers and would be capable of capturing a multiple CR90s or an EF76.
I think when the New Republic re-established the senate, all those planets became independent. And since e.g. Kuat and Fondor used to build ISDs, they simply retained the facilities and did not bother to upgrade/rebuild them to construct Nebula class ships. I think the Black fleet trilogy said the NR had like, 5 or 6 Fleets with 100 capital ships each. Which is hilariously few compared to 25k ISDs the Empire had. Because most of their fighting force was "local", like the Bothans who build their Assault Cruisers or Corellians who had their own designs. Wasnt it one of the plot points that the NR was badly organized on purpose, so a new Emperor could not arise again?

Force users have innate resilience against milder Force techniques such as Mind Trick and basic telekinesis, but not something relatively advanced like Force Kill (the ability to destroy a victim's organs). It is the second most advanced version of Force Grip just behind Force Crush (crushing a victim's entire body outright), requiring a lot of skill to use. Force users need to actively resist powerful Force techniques (such as the one you brought up) using their own Force reserves; otherwise they will suffer the full effects of the ability.
In the Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Bane says that all Jedi and Sith are taught how to create a Force bubble to protect themselves from Force attacks, but with our it they don’t have any innate resilience against them unless they’re species does (an example being Huts)
If it becomes harder to manipulate things the further away they are (a pretty reasonable assumption), then the defender will always have an innate advantage - you're always much closer to your internal organs than your opponent. So there would have to be quite a difference in power in order for someone's attempt to move someone else's internal organs to be able to overwhelm the defender's attempts to counteract that movement.
To answer the fan question, force users can crush organs. Darth Vader and Darth Bane have both force crushed hearts, and Mace Windu used the force to damage grievous's organs before episode III
If I didn't know better (which I didn't), I'd say the reason is because ISD production lines and parts inventory were already in place, so you may as well use them.
It could also be because the Imperial Remnant had more than a few ISD in use. The Mon Cal were still stepping up to be the main provider for the New Republic. During this downtime half built or nearly completed ISD would be necessary to stand off against the Warlords and detached ISD units that remained loyal. After Endor it seemed the largest vessel in service was Home-1. That's it, a few Nebulon Frigates, Gallifrey Transports, and Corellian Corvettes can't police the Galaxy.

To the question about force users being able to manipulate someone’s internal organs. If I remember right in the first Darth Bane novel, Bane has a revelation after some time of his training that he used the force when he was younger, against his abusive father to give him a heart attack.
I believe Bib Fortuna was supposed to only have 1 Lek. It is possible to use the Force to attack someone's biology. It's used by Luke throughout the Legendsverse, usually to disable his opponents. The Nightsisters use it significantly in the Courtship of Princess Leia, especially with breaking Han's teeth. It is also used on a micro scale to heal Mon Mothma in the Jedi Academy trilogy. But in all the major instances where such techniques were used, preplanning or extra focus and control were required, making them rather impractical during the heat of battle. Even during the Vong War, it's highly likely that major shipyards like Kuat had an abundance of ISD parts and hulls. It's much more practical and efficient to simply assemble the pieces with the latest improvements than to scrap the lot at a major cost. Additionally, the New Republic (as well as Trawn, and later Pellaeon) didn't field ISDs like Palpatine or Imperial Warlords. ISDs under the Republic were often part of a larger battlegroup with additional capital ships and support craft, allowing it to fulfill niche rolls in fleet formations, and extending its service life by decades.
I could see it being a situation of “the ships where in a high stage of completion in the shipyard” with the later ships based on the ISD being modifications on the common and fairly cheap ISD hulls. Not to mention the manufacturing infrastructure was captured mostly intact on worlds like Kuat which would have an easier time producing ISDs instead of the various Moncalamari ships.
R&D costs money,production machinery costs money,and the New Republic captured both at zero cost from the empire.
Probably took awhile to safely an comfortably switch to the other big battleships like Mon Cals and Starhawks as well
Moreover, the galaxy is probably drowning in warehouses full of spare/redundant ISD parts. That's one thing I really like about the Canon Starhawk - it's taking advantage of preexisting materials and labor.

The ISDs weren’t cheep at all, according to wookieepedia building just one ISD cost the annual economic output of several star systems. Also the ISDs need very large crews and where prone to mechanical problems.
I agree a fair number of ISD's the New Republic had were probably ones that had been captured more than halfway complete. When your pressed for warships finishing a half or three quarter built ship in a shipyard you just captured is far cheaper and quicker if you already have the parts available. If the fledgling New Republic had a serious shortage of in Legends it was a shortage of Capital Ships!

long answer: they probably did that so that they could make their own later on, which they did. and also because they had people from the Imperial Remnant join their ranks, some of them even had Imperial Star Destroyers, they carried out the functions and purposes they were made for very well.
It is quite simple. Half of New Republic was the Empire. ISD if used properly was a good ship and New Republic inherited lot of infrastructure based around this class. Like scrapping all ISD's was dumb interpretation of New Canon (also not actually accurate also as there were implications that some ISD's wre still used).
Also consider that they would be very cheap to make compared to other capital ships of the era due to how many had already been produced.

On the contrary the ISD is not particularly focused on being a frontline brawler but is more of a very good garrison ship, owing to its sizable troop complement that enables it to launch planetary invasions as well as engaging in ship-to-ship combat.
The Nebula is DEFINITELY stronger in ship-to-ship combat while having lower crew and maintenance requirements, as well as having much better firing arcs on its weapons and less vulnerabilities.
Now regarding 'best capital ship brawlers of their size class', even that isnt correct. The Tector in terms of pure ship-to-ship combat is superior to an ISD, because it sacrifices the large ground forces and hangars for additional firepower. Obviously the ISD has more versatility, which is its main advantage; being much more versatile than a pure ship to ship brawler, given that it possesses large ground force contingents, fighters, etc.
Cause it's a quality ship design. Some downsides, sure, but still quality.

Same reason the French built Panther tanks for a few years after Ww2, they worked, and you have warehouses of parts.
They didn't build them so much as used recycled Panthers that were laid on the sides of French streets and only used them in parades until they built a proper French tank. In fact they did a bunch of tests to see how they could improve the Panther and they found that it was so unreliable that you might as well built a new tank instead of fixing it. They mostly used American Chaffees and Sherman tanks in their own imperial attempts to keep a hold on their colonies cause those were far more reliable and better suited then the heavy tank that was two tons lighter than an IS 2 without the armour nor firepower to go with the weight.

It was a stop gap in case the Soviets decided to kick off.

I always assumed it was a case of there being just that many unfinished hulls and it was simpler and faster to finish them than to break them for parts and material for new ships.
Not to mention all of the production and maintenance facilities that would have to be retooled across the galaxy and the thousands of star destroyers scattered across the galaxy in various states of functionality. This isn't even getting into the fact that defected imperial command crews would have be trained to operate these vessels. For the fledgling new republic government it makes sense to leverage these and divert resources that would be wasted on setting up new military production infrastructure towards building new government institutions and programs.

The ISD id a solid ship that fulfils a role on most fleet with pretty good shielding, good armour and very, very good firepower
Plus its already established, spare parts and maintenance designed to care for it already exists
It fits a role in the new republic pretty well, a main line warship that could hold its own against another of the same or bigger size. Its weakness against smaller ships could could also be covered with a few dedicated support ships of the republic or a few squadrons of X-wing independent of any carrier

the only big downside is its faster than most support ships, meaning any support fleet would either have to be unusually fast to keep up, or (what actually happend) the ISD 2 would just lumber along at half throttle or something.
@@AmdUlkoinen Bridge was actually well shielded and tower actually didn't have that many people inside holding mostly infrastructure. Also ISD did have second more secured bridge, but cocky Imperial commanders commonly didn't bother to move there during the combat. If used with anti-fighter escort in intended role as Assault Ship, then it was actually quite excellent (alongside Tactor used as Battleship). Problem was that Empire did send them unescorted to patrol systems, where they could easily fall in the ambush.
For safety's sake, I'd pepper the hull with some "modern" CWIS batteries. Those laser defence turrets they come with can't hit beans.
The problem isnt so much that the ship isnt good as much as its not super efficient. Large crew size and maintenance intensive, while not having great firing arcs on alot of its weapons. A modest redesign would improve its functionality and reduce its cost at the same time.
Personally I think modifying all of the ISD's with new weapon placements (Copy the procursator optimally) and streamlined crew facilities would reduce their upkeep and improve functionality

I actually have a book where a Dathomirean Witch actually snaps her fingers , and severs Luke Skywalkers brain and body connection he collapses to the floor ,and has to literally use all the force he can gather from the entire living jungle to save himself. He then starts to understand more about layering himself in the force. Putting up barriers to his emotions , and to his body. This is why more of the older Jedi seem to walk slower they are literally walking shields. Always prepared for anything.
Isn't that the scene where an actual rock says something like "here have my bit" and gives him a bit of Force strength. I remember reading it and going... 'yeah that might be taking it a bit too far with the Force being in everything'.

They can. I remember reading a book from Mara's perspective that the hyperdrives of the ship she was in was going at beyond it's normal level. Also it makes sense from a strategic perspective to be able to coordinate long distance jumps to finish at the same time.
I think they can, I won't pinpoint a page but I believe in Thrawn's trilogy there were some orders from the great admiral that specified hyperspace speed when moving his flagship

Another factor could be that producing any kind of ship requires infrastructure to actually build them. A completely new design would need shipyards capable of their construction. E.g., wouldn't KDY need time and extra resources in order to re-design their production capabilities in order to transition to building other types of ships?

We have multiple examples of using the force inside another person's body, one of which you actually covered. Gethzerion actually killed an entire army of Zsinj's stormtroopers by causing brain hemorrhages. In the KotOR games, the Wound line of darkside force powers literally starts with the base power being described as causing painful spasms in the target's lungs, before going up to the Choke and Kill powers.

Are you dumb? Starhawk was build as dedicated SSD killer (also it is ship from Legends). They didn't actually scrap most ISD's, especially as half of New Republic is the Empire. In fact famous Leia's ISD is specifically kept canon, even if they didn't yet confirm its faith.

@@danielschwab4281 If you don't know what this debate is about, then don't justify future insults. Starhawk was originally mentioned in Expanded Universe. The reason why it did have this huge tractor beam in canon, was to push larger ships into planets gravity walls. That is literally the only reason why those ships were build. Most of New Republic was actually ex-Imperial and they equipment didn't magically disappear. It is just one of things we don't see off screen, like Death Star blowing up Rebellion Lucrehulk on the way to Yavin.

@@TheRezro Also its not from Legends. It was mentioned first in the Aftermath trilogy, which is technically EU but is Canon EU. If you're going to call someone dumb, which you never should, then get your facts straight. Any reference to a Starhawk in Legends is actually either a shuttle used around the time of the 2nd galactic civil War or two types of speeder bikes, the Starhawk and the Starhawk 2b. The ship is a Canon creation that is absolutely a cool idea that is entirely impractical. It makes no sense to waste time with the process when captured ISDs work fine. The only reason is to help PR, as the ISD is a symbol of oppression. However the legends rebellion and new Republic using it logistically makes sense, and is realistic as hell as discussion definitely took place over whether to scrap it or whatever but some bean counter, probably Borsk and his sect, decided it'd cost too much or weaken the navy for too long.
With the question about using the Force inside someone’s body-
It’s possible, but difficult. The Force and the various abilities that are possible through it rely largely on the ability of the mind to decide what it wants and believe that it’s possible. For the first part, you need to have a firm picture in your mind of what you want to do. This is one reason Jedi use hand motions while using powers like persuade or push - it helps them visualize the end result.the physical motion itself helps focus the mind, but isn’t intrinsically necessary.
For the second part, you have to actually know what you’re doing is possible and rely on intense focus to prevent intrusive thoughts or doubt from interfering with the ability. For example, Yoda and Luke’s favorite exchange: “I don’t believe it!” “That is why you fail.” The Force can do basically do anything you believe it can, so long as that belief is strong enough to put aside doubts.
So using the Force inside a body would likely require two things. The first is a reasonable knowledge of the anatomy in question, to help you visualize the target area and what you want to happen. The second is that you know for a fact that it’s possible to do what you want to do.
Bardan Jusik (SPOILERS FOR REPUBLIC COMMANDO NOVELS) uses the Force to heal brain damage at one point. I don’t recall the phrasing, but it was involved.

Let's look at Darth Sidious's Eclipse. It was a huge damn ship was way bigger than the ISD because it needed that space to actually have a laser cannon that WASN'T AS EFFECTIVE as the Death Star cannon. What didn't make sense was scrapping 25000 ISD's for ego reasons. If we want example of actual lazy it would be Xyston, where Jar Jar Abrams forget even about size of windows, rehashing model from Rogue One. Anyway it is actually Lucas Film what is responsible of Sequel fiasco as they were given free hand, except Disney forget that thy didn't make successful SW movie from the 80's and new management (hired by Lucas I remind) pick usual corporate BS with celebrate directors and ignoring the lore. Gladly Disney finally intervened and give creative control to Jon Favreau.

I think the reason they used them was mostly as a deterrent, similar to the Tarkin Doctrine but with more peaceful intentions in mind.
Just imagine how terrifying it would be for pirates and other outlaws to run into an ISD expecting to mow down a few TIEs, only for a squadron of black X-Wings and A-Wings to fly out of it instead.
It would be like the German army denying Panthers during the Cold War era. Sure they replaced it with the Leopard, but the Panther is definitely better than throwing rocks.
My belief is that the 'new' Destroyers was retrofitted old Imperial Destroyers. Droid armies require at least factories which aren't highly mobile while being a target for the opposition.

I think Coran Horn's lightsaber was pretty cool. The ability to change its length and the double tap to turn off feature... It's going a long way back but I think the blade changed colour when it changed modes when he first found it.
On the "Could a force user use the force on someone's body parts" - Absolutely yes. There was a Star Wars comic depicting Darth Vader targeting an Jedi Alien's heart with Force Grip directly (I don't remember the specific comic unfortunately, but it's a good example) as a form of torture. As with all things with the Force, it requires stout and competent manipulation of the Force, something Darth Vader had in spades.
You also see targeted Force manipulation used by Obi-Wan Kenobi against Anakin Skywaler/Darth Vader during their Mustafar duel in the movie novel. He momentarily disabled Anakin's robotic hand that caused Anakin to drop his Lightsaber (if you remember the scene where Anakin is without his lightsaber in the movie and charges at Obi-Wan, that's what happened even though the movie doesn't actually show the scene described in the book)
On the "Can they crush organs" question: Yes they can. Vader used that as a torture method, squeezing someone`s heart, in one of the comics (Legends).
I think Jacen Solo also did something like this when he was interrogating Boba Fetts daughter in Legacy of the Force

When I read about the NR ISDs in EU, my impression was that they were heavily refitted ships that had been captured, surrendered, or otherwise acquired. The NR would definitely want to reduce the crew complement needed, and hangar space would be modified to handle NR fighters. By the YV War, I'll bet the only original ISD part left would be the hull itself. They wouldn't be much different than the Invincible-class dreadnoughts used by the CSA in the Han Solo Trilogy.
What ancient SW ships would you like to see refitted and fielded in the OT era? I would like to see the Jedi corvette-style cruiser and the Sith Interceptor from the Old Republic era brought back. Nice little ships....

i also think using the force to affect internal organs or workings of droids and ships is something completely possible but would require a deep understanding of the workings of the particular being or machine to be possible -- the force isn't magic, it requires focus and intention so while you could undo the insides of someone or something you would have to have the knowledge of *what* it is you're affecting be it an organ or component!
For the turbolaser question - you could also go the X-Wing game series route - full power to weapons would just allow them to keep the capacitors filled longer. While it would give the guns of a Venator longer time at full power, you wouldn't get some sort of superturbolaser from putting everything in one gun. And it neatly covers all the other dowhnsides overcharging a gun would entail (burnouts etc)

Another portion of keeping the ISDs in service, is because they were intended to be multirole ships well suited to independent operations. They were a respectable gunnery platform, possessed a good hangar, and were built to carry a good enough number of troops. So when you had a number of splinter factions, pirates, and warlords that needed to be brought to heel, they couldn't just be dropped out of hand.
Plus the New Republic was probably poor when it was formally organized and for a good while after, so...
Their size excluded them from some covert ops missions, unless as a decoy
I really thought the anakin solo was a brand new star destroyer. I always assumed it was simply because the new Republic needed ships badly and the infrastructure to build Imperial class star destroyers was already in place and efficient.

My theory about why the Alliance not using droids was that it was a PR decision. The galaxy just went through a droid war and only the bad guys use droid armies.
On the topic of sending all the reactor power to the ships guns: Even if the guns can handle that amount of power (no way they could if you think about how much power a ship would need to make) Turbolasers need a recharge time, brief sure but it's still like a second or two before they can fire again. It's mentioned in... The Courtship of Princess Leia I think when the Hapans come in and explain why they have saucer ships. It's legit only because of that recharge time the guns need. Their ships are designed to fire a gun and move it out of position for another that can fire right away. That gives them the ability to fire much faster.
Hapans turbolasers are very outdated and recharge much slower than other turbolasers, that limitation doesnt exist for most other factions. Its specifically because Hapan turbolaser tech is out of date.

What was the need for the Nebulon B? i have seen EC-Henry's imperial nebulon B and it has got be wondering. I know many were used as medical frigates, but why not use a blockade runner or a small mon calamari cruiser?
In Star by star, the shipyards at Bilbringi were producing ISD's. Maybe they were retrofitting or repairing them. I'd have to check again, but I remember them mentioning they were being built.

Not shield bulbs, they are long rang scanners used for targeting hence the high height. Rotj executor lost its shield from the rebel fleet concentrating fire on its bridge, not the destruction of the bulb. Richard edlund even calls them long range radars when describing the scene in the movie. Makes sense why the ssd couldn’t shoot down the A wing if they are used for targeting. Assume they are shield simple because of a succession of scenes would be a casual fallacy.
If I'm remembering correctly there's the odd mention of the New Republic finishing Star Destroyers under construction when they took shipyards like Kuat. Kuat's legends page on wookiepedia actually specifically mentions that during the Yuuzhan Vong war that KDY produced many ships for the NR during the Vong war especially Star Destroyers. This could have been where I got confused about a throwaway line and it doesn't _specifically_ say the new SDs were Imperial class rather than Nebula for example. It would make sense to however to continue building ISDs from Imperial shipyards, they already have the assembly lines and processes for mass production of ISDs whereas for example the Mon Calamari Cruisers would have involved a significant retraining, retooling and reorganisation.
As well, I seem to remember reading about the Nebula being much more expensive than an ISD? It could make sense to continue producing ISDs until the Nebula and the other ships of the New Ship Program were fully ready for scale production

@@chadholzman1819 Well, in Papatine's defense, the leakage of the DS 2's construction was part of his plan to catch and eliminate all the rebels at once (it's main force at least), that's why part of the Main Imperial fleet along with Vader's flagship, the Executor were also at Endor
Also keep in mind that the Kuat ship yards specialize in producing SD class ships. It would take a lot of work and money to refit them to make more Mon Cal ships so it would be easier to just have it keep producing SDs until other ship yards can replace them.

@@papapalps2415 Because SW Hyperspace travel relies on transferring the ship into a different dimension, in which objects in realspace still have an impact. Warp tech, as I understand it, creates a time-space bubble around a ship, which pushes it through the warped space, thus vastly increasing speed. Since places like the Unknown Regions have anomalies specifically within hyperspace, but necessarily not in realspace, it isn't outside the realm of ideas to think that Warp Technology would be more effective in those areas.

Most Force powers, especially those involving the mind and will may be thwarted if their opponent has enough mind and will of their own. We see this addressed by Darth Bane when discussing essence transfer in that a person with enough will could defeat a Dark Lord who made the attempt, even if that person was not Force sensitive.

In ROTS when Cody and Obi are talking, there's a ship in the Venator's hanger that kinda resembles a Battlestar, any clue what that is?
I take it back, the HAET-221. Watched one of your vids on hidden ships in ROTS and realized that's what I was talking about. Just didn't recognize it cause in the hanger you see it from the front, and the best shot of it is in the rear.
Also they took over several Imperial Shipyards that were already tooled to build ISD's. So retooling for different or newer ships would have taken time when they were in desperate need of ships (though it did happen eventually).
I can understand it by the ISD being T-72 and it's modification being something like PT-91(Modification of T-72 by Poland).
Simple, the shipyards were already set up to build Star Destroyers. It was cheaper to use them as is, rather than completely redesign everything for a new format of ship model.
There’s also the fact that the New Republic was constantly at war and didn’t have the funds for the R&D process of building an entirely new ship design when there was a perfectly good one already in existence. It also was much cheaper to just updated the systems on the ISDs than to make an entirely new ship.
In Thrawns Revenge the only Imperial Star Destroyer I ever had in the New Republic is that Red one. That’s it

About those possible New-Republic-built ISDs, I would guess that most of those were either refits of captured imperial ships, or partially built hulls sitting at various shipyards... however, I think New Republic actually built brand new ISD's simply for the reason that some shipyards were set up to build those, and some shipyards would rather build their old designs than to adjust their facilities for foreign-desgned ships simply due to prestige (with KDY being the prime suspect)... this is probably why you had new MC90 (Mon Calamari/Dac), Nebulas (REC... Rothana? Fondor? Corellia? Sullust?), Republics (RSD at Rendilli) and quite possibly a few ISD-IIs (KDY at Kuat), all within roughly the same capability...

What also might be considered is that there probably multiple Star Destroyers in mid-production. They might have been close to completion that it would have been cheaper to complete rather than scrapping.

The power capacities outlined in the ICS are not "ridiculous." We're talking about ships that can power drives that cross the galaxy in a day and weapons that can vaporize asteroids in a single shot and slag planetary surfaces in hours. That requires a lot of power. Minimalism is what's ridiculous.

Thing's like removing fighters for turboalsers and placing them on them on different part's of the ship, removing un needed or non effective parts of the ship like bridges, structure, hanger etc. But also keep it still recognisable as a Venator, like a combat model.

Going off the lightsaber question: I've read that lightsabers with Krayt dragon pearls as being more powerful than the average saber, and even changes the usual ignition noise to more of a howling, pressumedly like the roar of a Krayt dragon. My question is: what does "more powerful" actually mean? Like, would it burn hotter, or give the wielder some kind of power boost? Or booth? Could it have the capability to cut or pierce beskar? What color would it be?

Probably because he was worried Qiu-Gon could get more Jedi to think like him. The Jedi were corrupted politics and the dark side. They no longer were pure vessels for the force. Unable to fully carry out it's will. Qiu-Gon was thought to be a gray Jedi by a lot of people but others scoffed at the idea saying he isn't a gray Jedi for doing what he's doing, that the Jedi were supposed to be like Qiu-Gon and he was the only one sticking to what a Jedi should be. I'm guessing if others did follow Qiu-Gon they would have realize what's been going on a sense the plot of the dark side before the clones could have been brought into the picture. No clones, no order 66, the whole plan fails.

In terms of Twi'leks with lost lekku there is also Rianna Saren who lost one during her time as a slave when her master cut it off. She later replaced it with a prosthetic but was always a bit ashamed of having a false one and apparently shunned by other Twi'leks who I assume regarded her as being incomplete or pitiful for having only the one true lekku.
Imagine if the New Republic got both the Resurgent-class and Nebula-class star destroyers in the sequel trilogy.

@@jonnnyren6245 Yeah, on the one hand I've always wanted to say they stories are unrealistic from a military POV, but then again this wasn't a military dictatorship coming into power, and instead the bureaucrats would have taken charge, which means most of those making the decision for the military would be clueless when it comes to what the military needs and the actually best course of action. So really the bad decisions aren't really surprising.
Hell, we have long had politicians canceling needed military projects and procurement, not because the items weren't needed, but to score points politically, so why would that change, just because a society was more technologically advanced then we are now.
To see true cluelessness, watch any video clips where politicians pushing for more and more gun control, where they talk about firearms, and even if you know very little about firearms, it will likely be very clear to you that they have no fucking clue what they are talking about.

The RA didn’t need a major Battle Droid Army but they could’ve made droids for specific purposes. Building Commando Droids armed with DH-17, Handheld Shields, along with variants of grenades and use them in boarding or infiltration operations. They could’ve been built from raw materials from scrapyards which was mostly unmonitored and built within large bulk freighters. A CR90 with a dozen commando droids and a company of organic troopers and would be capable of capturing a multiple CR90s or an EF76.

I think when the New Republic re-established the senate, all those planets became independent. And since e.g. Kuat and Fondor used to build ISDs, they simply retained the facilities and did not bother to upgrade/rebuild them to construct Nebula class ships.
I think the Black fleet trilogy said the NR had like, 5 or 6 Fleets with 100 capital ships each. Which is hilariously few compared to 25k ISDs the Empire had. Because most of their fighting force was "local", like the Bothans who build their Assault Cruisers or Corellians who had their own designs.
Wasnt it one of the plot points that the NR was badly organized on purpose, so a new Emperor could not arise again?
In regards to using the Force to crush someone's internal organs, I wouldn't be surprised if Force-users had an innate resilience against such techniques.
Force users have innate resilience against milder Force techniques such as Mind Trick and basic telekinesis, but not something relatively advanced like Force Kill (the ability to destroy a victim's organs). It is the second most advanced version of Force Grip just behind Force Crush (crushing a victim's entire body outright), requiring a lot of skill to use. Force users need to actively resist powerful Force techniques (such as the one you brought up) using their own Force reserves; otherwise they will suffer the full effects of the ability.
In the Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Bane says that all Jedi and Sith are taught how to create a Force bubble to protect themselves from Force attacks, but with our it they don’t have any innate resilience against them unless they’re species does (an example being Huts)
If it becomes harder to manipulate things the further away they are (a pretty reasonable assumption), then the defender will always have an innate advantage - you're always much closer to your internal organs than your opponent. So there would have to be quite a difference in power in order for someone's attempt to move someone else's internal organs to be able to overwhelm the defender's attempts to counteract that movement.
To answer the fan question, force users can crush organs. Darth Vader and Darth Bane have both force crushed hearts, and Mace Windu used the force to damage grievous's organs before episode III

If I didn't know better (which I didn't), I'd say the reason is because ISD production lines and parts inventory were already in place, so you may as well use them.
It could also be because the Imperial Remnant had more than a few ISD in use. The Mon Cal were still stepping up to be the main provider for the New Republic. During this downtime half built or nearly completed ISD would be necessary to stand off against the Warlords and detached ISD units that remained loyal.
After Endor it seemed the largest vessel in service was Home-1. That's it, a few Nebulon Frigates, Gallifrey Transports, and Corellian Corvettes can't police the Galaxy.

It is possible to use the Force to attack someone's biology. It's used by Luke throughout the Legendsverse, usually to disable his opponents. The Nightsisters use it significantly in the Courtship of Princess Leia, especially with breaking Han's teeth. It is also used on a micro scale to heal Mon Mothma in the Jedi Academy trilogy. But in all the major instances where such techniques were used, preplanning or extra focus and control were required, making them rather impractical during the heat of battle.
Even during the Vong War, it's highly likely that major shipyards like Kuat had an abundance of ISD parts and hulls. It's much more practical and efficient to simply assemble the pieces with the latest improvements than to scrap the lot at a major cost. Additionally, the New Republic (as well as Trawn, and later Pellaeon) didn't field ISDs like Palpatine or Imperial Warlords. ISDs under the Republic were often part of a larger battlegroup with additional capital ships and support craft, allowing it to fulfill niche rolls in fleet formations, and extending its service life by decades.
