  • Today I'm discussing vegan outreach initiative "Elwood's Organic Dog Meat," a parody of "humane" meat operations aimed at pointing out cognitive dissonance and humane-washing in animal agriculture.

    I find it interesting that vegans immediately understand this isn’t real, whereas meat eaters are shocked and believe it’s real. It’s almost like as vegans we know Western society would NEVER allow this to happen to dogs, but carnists know what terrible things we (they) do to animals and therefore believe people would do this too. Or is it carnists reacting to their own internalized guilt over eating animals, and drawing the line here makes them feel like they have held onto some of their morals?

      It’s internal guilt for sure, guilt, denial, fear & shame.

    One thing I like about Elwood's is that in their FAQ they address that some people do eat dog flesh, and explain why their campaign is not xenophobic.

      I think that’s super important! I’m no more horrified by the dog meat trade than I am by all other forms of animal exploitation.

    The woman being like “oh no, I got it right away 😉” reminded me of when I was vegetarian and would talk to vegans and be like “oh yeah I get it, I’m right there with you” and they’d be like “you do not, in fact, get it” lol

      So , you still don’t “get it” farming mass quantities of food in a controlled small area ( quantitive to the scale of the earth 71 billion hectares) is impossible when animal populations are completely dependent upon food resources. I.E. id est, which is Latin for “that is.” The abbreviation “e.g.” stands for the Latin phrase exempli gratia, more crops more wildlife. An example of this is a hunter using bait to lure the population of deer into producing more offspring and increasing the number deer populations a hunter can hunt. But farmers don’t want higher populations of deer because the deer population will destroy the farmers crops. So the farmer controls the deer populations by killing them, same with squirrels in almond orchards. The farmers buy traps called “line” or “tube” traps to break their necks and produce more vegan almonds.

      @bestbehave Місяць тому

      @@redbriarn6295clearly you do not get it
      The vast majority of crops are grown to feed farm animals. Animal agriculture is the single biggest industrial driver of deforestation, environmental degradation, ghg production, and water way pollution.
      So environmentally (and therefore regarding protection of human beings) it’s completely ludicrously, detrimental, even before the obscene cruelty is factored in
      80b farmed animals don’t live off fresh air (and most don’t even get that)

    • @redbriarn6295
      @redbriarn6295 Місяць тому

      @@bestbehave I thought wood ( lumber) harvested from forests ;a multi billion dollar business is the largest cause for deforestation… after all the trees are cut down and sold for money, the land is sold to farmers/ ranchers… and then the farms eventually become towns and cities… like New York, Shanghai, Paris, and London

    • @bestbehave
      @bestbehave Місяць тому

      @@redbriarn6295 there is indeed logging for its own sake. However shout 60% is driven for land hungry animal ag. The logging simply helps finance the clearance - once it’s done it’s done and the long term return comes from animal feed and pasture
      Those beautiful bucolic scenes of cows in pasture is in effect an industrial wasteland, the debt for which will be paid by our children, many times over
      We can feed a global population plant based on a quarter of the land that it takes for the animal abuse model. That allows for environmental restoration, with some left over for commercial tree plantation.
      And there is no solution to climate change that includes animal ag. It’s the biggest producer of ghgs by a long chalk.
      So even without addressing the obscene cruelty (not to mention terrible working conditions and dispossession of indigenous populations -they are human too), we’re actually have no choice if we want a future for our kids. The pragmatic choice of to go vegan.

    What's that saying? One dead is a tragedy, a hundred dead is a statistic or something... Many humans actually view other humans the same way. People have a hard time extending their empathy. They act like it's a limited resource, or maybe they just are too lazy or not smart enough to really think about it.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  10 місяців тому +4

      Wow, I hadn't heard that phrase but it certainly captures the psychological phenomenon here! I think that's why farm animal sanctuaries are so deliberate in naming their animals, often with human names, so that people can get to know them as individuals worthy of care and compassion.

    Begs the question -- has a sense of humor and recognition of sarcasm been BRED out of the human species recently? Connecting the dots also seems to have become a foreign concept in the knee-jerk community. I personally think Elwood's is a hilarious and genius concept to make people hopefully finally get that epiphany.

    It's always so interesting to me how not thought through carnists' stance is, and yet they are so confident about it, and feel that there is some moral justification in there somewhere even though they themselves can't find it. I came across a similar initiative a few years ago: ua-cam.com/video/ODE6UdQKaKw/v-deo.html

      By the way Marielle, I was recently thinking about a topic you could potentially cover someday -- animal breeding and the promotion by celebrities of certain breeds that are predisposed to suffering. For example, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheehan have greatly contributed to (if not initiated) the popularity of Scottish fold cats, which have a genetic mutation with a number of very painful health issues. I am back in Austria now, and Austria and Germany have banned the breed for this reason, but many people have bought them in other countries, and are only realising too late the high vet costs that are involved in the proper care for these poor animals. A couple of months ago I found one cat that was abandoned, she was only a year old but could not even walk properly due to the genetic mutation, the vet luckily ended up keeping her, which was good because that way she could really get the care she needed, but said it was unlikely she would live very long. When my own (obviously non-breed, adopted) cat went missing (just for two days) a month ago, I went on the lost and found cats website for Vienna, and saw several such Scottish fold cats found. It is really heartbreaking, and these celebrities should really practice some due diligence with the reach they have.

      You’re so right that there’s this dogmatic confidence with carnists, as if their decisions are based on a rock solid body of evidence. In reality they’re based on a false narrative that has been taught to them from a young age and that they are taught not to question. When someone else dares to question it, they are labeled in all sorts of negative ways.
      Similar to the video you shared, I remember a viral video from a few years ago where people believed they were dining in an upscale restaurant and when they ordered pork, they were taken to a back room with a pig and told they had to slaughter the pig themselves. Of course they didn’t and the ruse was revealed, but similar concept of “shock and horror hopefully translated to self reflection.”

    I am honestly not so sure that I would not go for a taste of dog meat when it is offered like that for free on the street. (I know, I am kinda surprised myself and I would probably pass on it nowadays.)
    Do not get me wrong. I do not want to create demand for animal products or financially support animal exploitation, but in a case like this I am not sure if I would cause these things. I mean, what if I would take a dogmeat sample and throw it straight into the closest bin instead of tasting it? Would I be causing the company a loss by eating for free?
    One could say that I would be normalizing dogs as a product for people passing by if I tasted it and I would say that is correct, but so would just standing at the samples and talking to the "salesperson".
    One could say that it would have an effect on my perception of dogs, but my perception is already "messed up" I do not distinguish between dogs, pigs and other animals based on the function humans prescribed to them. Also I live in a society (not America) where most do not treat dogs as pets or companions, but as workers, nuisances and even food, but merely out of necessity. (Famine)

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for sharing this perspective. I think you're right that just tasting a free sample wouldn't necessarily support an industry (hey, there are "Freegans" for a reason 🤪). And you're definitely right that this experiment would only work in certain countries. You are pretty much guaranteed to get horrified reactions in North America and most parts of Europe, and I think that's really the point of the experiment (to hopefully convert that "horror" to a thought-provoking reflection on other animals that person may consume).

      @@TotallyForkable And thank you for responding so kindly.
      I saw part two of this outreach video after I posted my previous comment btw. I was surprised there were 2 British guys in it that tried the dog meat while believing it was actual dog meat. I have no reason to judge them on that, though I do wonder if there is any animal they would not try the meat of. I wonder this about my past self too to be honest seeing I have even eaten whale meat and organs of and type in the past. A friend of mine has even eaten her "pet goat" when she was young. She did not kill it herself though. Her parents did that outside of her knowledge.
      How do you shock people like this into reflection? Without getting sued of course. 😉

    All food production / farming activities involves cruelty to animals and killing animals as well… its a fact… I understand the need to believe that being the “lesser of two evils” argument is comforting but it’s also irresponsible.
    Instead of attacking animal agriculture which is someone else’s food source, what about reducing or eliminating the animal suffering and deaths in various vegan foods
