Erin wasn't competitive, she was rude and aggressive. She didn't deserve death threats or anything like that, however I hope that she reflects on why people found her a rude and aggressive bully and changes her behaviour. Likewise, I hope those who sent death threats reflected on their behaviour too. Both are wrong.

@@firstname3857 depends on the definition, but vegan is mainly a food related thing so you can be vegan and buy fur scarfes, which is rare but wouldn't undermine your veganism of food choices. Typically yea vegan people also don't take anything else that comes from animals for other use, but that's cause they are pro animal rights and whatnot. You can be either one, both or neither.
So being vegan for health reasons is valid, eating honey by definition would make you not vegan. Then again it's a journey and labels are too damn complex just eat what you eat and don't be a douche about it.

Erin's backlash didn't come from her being competitive - it came from her embodying that vegan stereotype of the superiority complex and whatnot. That's not saying all vegans are like that, ofc they aren't, it was criticism of her approach to Brandon specifically. It puts a bad taste in your mouth when someone goes after another person with the attitude she had and then the fact that she was wrong really fed into everything
Agreed. I think vegans disliked her the most bc she makes vegans look HORRIBLE. If she was a level 100 vegan and she could sus out anything non vegan bc she was just that good, that would have been one thing, but she acted like that when she clearly doesn't know which things are vegan or which things can be veganized. She made veganism look even more elitist and inaccessible than it already is.

I agree. I’m a vegan for animal cruelty reasons but if someone chooses to eat or buy meat that’s their decision and I can’t argue or convince someone otherwise.
I like the label of a vegan because I know I’m helping the world but at the same time it’s kinda embarrassing because people think I’m this annoying girl who will scream at you for eating a burger.

Yes it is, because many would think that if you were truly what you say you are, you'd defend yourself. Manipulation can be a part of being competative. If you do something bad in a game and i type '?', I'm manipulating your feelings to get an edge and have more a chance to win. Now that doesn't mean you should be toxic, but mind games are a part of competative play.

@@kimmiewise1044 It’s not a “white elitist thing”. Veganism is an aspect of Jainism, for example, a religion practiced by mostly non-white people. Many Hindus are vegetarian culturally as well. Even for non-religious purposes, there are vegans of all races.

Erin was too annoying and judgmental. This is what sparked her getting hate. Erin was not fun to watch. I honestly disliked her because she was extremely rude and judgmental. Edit: the reason these are considered vegan is because there is no gelatin and the colouring doesn't come from beetles. For some vegans who are very very strict these could be considered non vegan as the sugar could be filtered through bone char as a means of whitening. But in general the actual bone char is not in the product and therefore most vegans are fine with eating them.
It’s interesting to hear the creator of this game say she hates how the audience got “distracted by erin” when that’s actually quite the opposite. She literally was the textbook example of showing bias and group think. She automatically singled out Brandon because he was more timid. She assumed he didn’t fit the part for whatever reason. She backed him into a corner and got everyone else to agree that he was automatically not the vegan. They all voted him out. The creator of the show literally wanted to show those two things and it really was seen best through erin ! The audience was so shocked bc it was so apparent and in real life it’s not as obvious. We’ve all been there dealing with an erin type so that added an extra layer.

Here's the thing. Of course don't send threats or harass Erin and of course she was playing the game. But the issue is HOW she was playing the game. That is why no one liked her. I hope in real life she is a great person but sadly our first impression of her was not good...
the targeting and gaslighting is still one of the worst pieces of media i've ever sat through, just because it was basically the exact same experience i had when i got bullied in middle school, where it got so severe i developed SzPD as a result. i still haven't watched the full video because of her.
she really doesn't make vegans look that bad. People hate on any vegan that isn't super subtle and laid back about their veganism, because they don't want their actions to be questioned. It's like people who say they aren't homophobic, they just don't like 'people shoving being gay in your face' - you're issue is not with the person, it's with the fact you don't want to admit it makes you uncomfortable bc of your own biases. Of course in the latter it's due to bigotry, and in the former it's due to the fact they know veganism is the 'morally correct' position

honestly it didn't bug me that she was being competitive, it bugged me that 1: she had her facts wrong about sour patch kids, 2: when he did give valid answers like buckwheat and taco bell, she immediately discarded/invalidated them, and then 3: when people turned it and questioned her she got super defensive, like she couldnt believe they were doubting her. I know I’m gonna get hate for saying this but if someone claims they’re vegan, despite a few slip-ups, and they’re making honest efforts to eat vegan, THEY’RE STILL VEGAN. I would still define them as vegan. The conscious effort is what matters. The more you tell a vegan person they’re not vegan, the more likely they’ll get discouraged and stop making an effort. That’s why Erin didn’t vibe with me. I don’t call it competitive. I think it was just mean. It’s been a year now so I know she’s definitely learned from the experience but this happens to people attempting to be vegan all the time. You learn and you become more and more of what you embody. It’s not an overnight thing. It makes me feel bad because Brandon probably doesn’t consider himself vegan anymore as he’s joking about eating all these non-vegan things. But Brandon, you’re still vegan if you keep up the effort! You got this! If you want to be vegan, go for it! I’m rooting for your health!

Her and I went to a conference together and the only food they offered was not vegan. She made a comment saying, "I don't think any of the food here is vegan." Then, without complaining any more or saying anything related to the food choices, she ate the food silently and just enough so that she wasn't hungry anymore. I still consider her vegan and I respected her even more for not wasting food.
I totally agree. this is actually an impactful lesson to the vegan community to be humble and more welcoming.

2. "as far as is possible and practical" makes that not an objectively measurable statement, especially with regards to practicability: furthermore, that may be one definition of the philosophy, but it is hardly the only one.
I have a friend who is vegan. When asked why, she replied, "Because I was having some health issues and decided to try giving up animal products for awhile, and I found that I started to feel a lot better."
When I asked her if it had anything to do with compassion towards animals, she said, "F*ck no. I couldn't care less about that."
That doesn't make her any less vegan in terms of execution.
I also have a friend like Erin who is incredibly... challenging... I would love to see them together. I don't think they would find common ground, but try to one-up each other. I do not have the luxury of having the decision to be vegan because of a severe health condition that forces me to eat very specific foods, including many animal products. I like vegan food very much, and if given the chance, I would definitely consider a vegan lifestyle, but I don't have that choice: my doctors are always telling me to eat more beef and to avoid fruits and vegetables as much as possible... and then my friend waxes at length about how disgusting she finds it that when we go out to eat (her suggestion), I eat food with animal products unless we deliberately go to a vegan restaurant (which unless done very sparingly, is putting my health at risk). So... where exactly is the minimization of cruelty towards me, a fellow animal who has about as much choice to be vegan as a snake does?

I didn’t have an issue w erin bc she was competitive i had an issue w her because her facts were wrong (sour patch kids ARE vegan), got upset when people questioned HER, and questioned the legitimacy of brandon’s veganism because he didn’t meet HER definition of what a vegan “should be.” she doesn’t deserve death threats and she’s not a bad person she’s just annoying and it’s disturbing and frustrating that people treated her like that.

This video brought up so many emotions from that video, oof. It's just the way she went for Brandon's throat every. single. time. She gave off "better than you" vibes which can be common interacting w/ some vegans (esp when Brandon said "they made me feel like my reason for being vegan wasn't good enough") and that's what Erin triggered in me. She made it seem like there was only one version of being vegan.
Also, kinda ironic how she called out Brandon but then she said Sour Patch Kids weren't vegan and didn't apologize (from what we saw in the video).
ANYWAYS, there are plenty of other OMO videos without the level of cutthroat-ness that Erin used. And Brandon seemed hurt. That's all.

veganism is a political movement, but people use it to call people that aren’t about the political stuff. in my opinion they should have just use one single definition of veganism, preventing a lot of the rudeness. but it’s clear for me that everyone knew that they weren’t taking in consideration only the political veganism (that is actually the “right” one) but just people that don’t eat animal related food... brandon for example would be called “plant based” diet or something like that. (english is not my first language, so probably i wrote something wrong... please don’t mind)

I don't know. Of course Erin was "just playing the game" and is probably a really nice person in real life, but I still think that she was way too harsh on Brandon. The way he was made to doubt if he was actually vegan was horrible, and I'm sure a lot of people in the comments like myself were reminded how real life bullies often act in very similar ways. Of course that doesn't mean she deserves the hate she got, but it feels weird to see Brandon make light of it when it clearly affected him on a pretty deep level.

The thing is the producers didnt do a good job; because veganism is a philosophy against all animal exploitation, so they shoul've gotten people who were all vegans for moral reasons. There is NOTHING wrong with being vegan for food related reasons honestly that just helps even trying to be vegan.
erin didnt deserve death threats or malicious attacks, but this glossed over the fact that people were angry because of how mean and accusatory she was being (and not just for the sake of the game). she upheld the vegan stereotype that vegans think they're morally superior and will gatekeep everyone else's veganism. the nicest thing i can say about her was she came off extremely insecure by just projecting onto everyone else. even watching back the clips, it was extremely difficult to feel like she was "just playing the game" when she looked like she was just WAITING for brandon to say something wrong. honestly it makes it worse that the producers and showrunners didn't WANT people to hate erin. it kind of shows that this wasn't production manipulation. it was just her.

The thing is Erin was literally making Brandon doubt himself and I feel like other people shouldn’t be worried and “playing safe”. The director is playing it down and saying “she’s just competitive” but no she’s plain out rude. I am EXTREMELY competitive but I am never rude, I don’t get my victory by bringing people down. In competitions I even cheer on opponents when I can and I take a loss like a champ. Erin is rude and a bully, plain and simple. Now by saying this I don’t mean people should threaten her but then again I was taught “treat others like you wanna be treated” and if you’re gonna act rude and condescending, expect the same treatment back, people don’t always have to be the “bigger person”

I feel like the problem with this kind of game is that it’s almost a setup to try and delve into other people’s views and tear them down. They were trying to figure out who was vegan and who wasn’t, and Erin took an accusatory stance with every person she talked to. It’s hard to tell if that was her trying to root out the mole and help her team win the game, or whether or not she may have a rude, accusatory stance in real life. The way she went about getting her answers came across toxically to me and made me very upset, but I realized later on that this whole competition was a bit of a grey area; in a room where seven people are potentially vegan, it’s almost natural for them to question and doubt each other about what makes someone a vegan... and that leaves room for quite a few insults, unfair judgments, and hurtful comments. Without the context of the game, Erin is maliciously berating Brandon about his lifestyle and putting him in a position to feel unworthy of his vegan label. With the context of the game, though, Erin may just be a little bit of an aggressively competitive player who’s drilling people to see who’s lying about being a vegan, and who wants to make sure that no stone is left unturned. I feel like it’s completely hard to tell whether or not her intentions were to bully other people. In my eyes, she definitely came across toxically and should’ve dialed it back a little. But I don’t know if I can go as far as saying that Erin is bullying, or that she treats people in the same fashion outside of a competitive setting. I guess what I’m trying to say is that this game is really just a setup for people to argue with each other and ask harsh questions about more sensitive topics, so I feel like it’s unfair to judge the entirety of Erin’s character off of what we see here.

I think the reason why everyone is so upset with how Erin acted is that while this was a competitive environment, her behavior is a reflection of this sense of superiority and gate keeping that some vegans embody. She took every opportunity to invalidate the decisions of what other vegans made in terms of lifestyle and what they ate, and it’s not anyone’s place to do that even in a competitive environment. Nothing about a competitive atmosphere justifies the invalidation of others decisions. You are there to gain information, not criticize what choices others made. Also, veganism is a spectrum because frankly not everyone can reasonably afford financially, physically and even spiritually to embody everything about that lifestyle, and that judgment for others decisions also showcases the hierarchy of social class. If one cannot financially afford to use certain vegan products, does that disqualify them from being vegan if they do everything else they can to embody the essence of the ideology? No. And that’s a lesson that I hope not just Erin, but everyone else in the video and those watching can take away from it.
Erin attacked one person the whole game and I think that they probably lost because of that. She was also very critical of someone who was trying their best to do the best thing for their body. In my opinion, The hate on her is unnecessary because the whole point of this video is entertainment and raising thought on stereotypes.
She embodied a bad stereotype. She probably turned so mqny people even farther away from veganism cause who wants to deal with that? And what she did to Brandon actually happens to new vegans alot, so she was actively contributing to bullying people out of veganism because they weren't up to her "knowledge" which wasn't even right!

Erin's approach was very discouraging, if she said that to a vegan it could motivate someone into giving up like they were doing it all wrong so they'd eventually quit.

sometimes i forget karen vegans actually exist. every vegan i've met in person has been just an average, nice person who just so happens to be vegan
I know right my friend who is vegan, would never shame me for having meat or not eating like a vegan. We have switch simple things like ice creams, sweets and restaurants we go to so she can join in and be more included. Occasionally we will go to a restaurant that is only vegan, but normally she just requires for us to makes sure there are vegan options. These people really give vegan bad reps. Because of people like my friend, I have reduce the amount of meat I do consume and where there source, and have switch products to vegan products. People like these give vegans a bad reputation, the simple changes that she has influenced me to make, probably has made a bigger difference than the results from some of these people.

I think people were not mad about Erin being competitive. They are mad because she was being ANNOYING and RUDE. And there's a fine line between between being competitive and straight up rude. 8:10 As someone who has participated in the meming of Erin, I agree that the video and concept as a whole was, and still is, great! I love those episodes for the exact reasons you’ve described here. We always pretend to be so inclusive and not judgmental, but put us in a room where we have to make that decision, and we almost ALWAYS bank on stereotypes and shallow judgements. Even when we know we shouldn’t! I, personally, don’t think the meming of Erin overshadowed that message. At least it didn’t for me lol she was just one comedic part of the larger point.

It was the gate keeping and making Brandon question if he was even a vegan or not because he didn’t use the right soap or something. I know as a fan of hip hop, there’s a huge gate keeping community that will shame people for liking one artist but not another artist. If Freddie Gibbs isn’t in your top 5 rappers of all time, you dont know music and you have terrible taste. It’s just disgusting behavior. And I know the point of the game is to pick apart these people and find the mole, but you can do that without the gate keeping. Plus, she had it out for Brandon before he ever said anything. Absolutely, the people who sent death threats or legitimately cyber bullied her are in the wrong and should have never taken it that far. But the reason the meme was funny before it got serious was because we can all relate to someone gate keeping a belief or movement like they know it better than you do.

for the record, i think people in the comments seem to not realize that the issue is not about the "that's not vegan" meme but its about attacking Erin and calling her names and sending hate.
All the people who I've seen that are saying stuff about her attitude have addressed that the death threats and harassment on her social media wasn't okay or neccesarry but that the reason that people didn't like her wasn't just for that one comment, it was being condescending towards everyone, nitpicking on Brandon only and saying she was being attacked when people were trying to calmly tell her that the tortilla on the crunchwrap is vegan.
Brandon, I hope you see this. You are an amazing person.
