I’m 3 weeks into growing my wisteria bonsai and was really wondering about pruning - knowing I can let it grow for strength and prune later is very reassuring as is knowing the 4 node pruning thing.

Peter, could you comment on the best soil type for wisteria bonsai. I have seen conflicting suggestions ranging from basic bonsai soil mix to standard commercial potting soil. I have also seen conflicting information on watering ranging from keep it moist to keep it in a tray of water. Thanks

I have a normal wisteria that I want to put in a pot and make into a bonsai. It is 6-7 years old.
How do I do that? Can I just cut it allmost all the way back to create a bonsai trunk? It does have a semi thick trunk now.
I have hardwood cuttings of wisteria that are leaving out now, I started them this April should I let them continue to leaf out? and the shallow pan should I let it soak, same as a older wisteria?
I have a very young Millettia (it hasn't blossomed yet), which pretty much looks like a miniature wisteria. Wonder if pruning of that works the same? Just saw a video with Teunis Jan Klein explaining ways of thickening the trunk of a bonsai, so these two videos kinda made me think of letting the lowermost tendrils grow to thicken the trunk some first. Hope I haven't forgotten by next year. :S

I've never heard of the clock wise and counter clock wise difference. Very interesting.
I thought it had to do with where one's located along the equator LOL. Organized vs disorganized. How about toilet flushing. I think in Australia, the water flushes counter clockwise and in America it's clockwise. I guess Americans are more organized heee heee

Hi, I’ve taken some soft wisteria cuttings from my late fathers garden, unfortunately only 3 out of 8 cuttings seem to have taken. I don’t know what to do with the cuttings now as it’s mid September. I don’t have a greenhouse. Could you tell me what I should do with these as there’s no way I can take anymore cuttings because I’ve had to sell my fathers house. Thank you

There is an American wisteria as well. It does not grow as intensely and is great in a native garden in North America

I'm so late commenting but I have a question i hope someone can answer.
I'm currently growing my first wisteria. I want it as a smallish bonsai. As I understand, trimming wood will not grow back, but trimming green plant will produce new shoots in different directions?
If I want it to flower, I should leave a few buds still on the plant when trimming?
I think I'm correct up until this point?
But where im really not sure is, if I leave those buds on, that will then turn to wood wont it? And there will be new shoots from that? So does this mean it's actually impossible to keep the tree from getting bigger and bigger over time? As each year leaving a few buds will mean a few more inches of wood, and then I will need to leave another few inches of green with buds, which will the turn to wood and so on? So it cant really be kept at one size and will inevitably get bigger over time?? Is this correct?
I have a plant like that and it is 4 year old. Actually, the plant just have new leafs each year but give no flower? Do you know why?
My next mission is to try the wisteria bonsai...I will have to look out for clockwise and anti clockwise

I have a question about my wisteria. I planted it in the year 2000 and I’ve yet to see any blooms. I see the buds as you say, and they’re old now but I also see the new buds for flowers. They get good sun. I always fertilize them I am on a down slop so I put spikes and plenty of my compost now the leaf and vine production is off the roof, I’m always cutting all the long tendrils or else they will cover the whole house and go up my tree and it’s been there since before my house was built ( the tree). What can b stopping my wisteria from blooming thank you Sir
Had the same problem. Got a wisteria for 20 years saw a few blooms just once or twice. Eventually I got rid of it.
You may try keeping it pruned really hard by cutting back the trendrils to a leaf or two as some as they grow beyond a few feet long. Stop fertilizing. Vigorous plants sometimes respond to excessive fertilizer by producing mass of leaves and no flowers.
If next year still no flowers my advice is to uproot it and get a new plant. Preferably buy it when it’s on flower so you can see the color, shape and be sure it flowers even if young. Wild wisterias born from seed start blooming later in life and often are capricious. Perhaps you have ended up with one of them and there’s little you can do to fix it. Garden varieties are bred to be more floriferous and are usually grafted which accelerates them getting into flower. There’s dozens of them perhaps ask advice from a trusted nursery. Hope this helps.
