I love Kindle! I’m so new to bonsai that I don’t even understand all of the terminology - so I just went to Kindle and purchased your book for beginners. Thank you for for being the sort of teacher that says this is possible for me, too. ❤️
Its so incredible how Peter can handle plants so nonchalantly and confidently, I swear sometimes if I bump into a plant wrong it'll die. Meanwhile Peter: 1:01 .
I had my friend come over to check out this mountain maple growing in my side yard where it shouldnt be able to. He tested the bark by pinching the tree. I thought he was gonna pull the whole thing out! But he knows what hes doing.
Four future trees in an instant and they seem to have everything going for them to get there, with the help from yourself and the crew ofcourse. Thanks for sharing,
Great Topic as always Peter. Thanks. This is the time of year for all of us that have trees in the early stages of training where this kind of pruning is absolutely necessary. Cheers from the USA.
He made it easy and enjoyable to watch and Learn, but I could never match Peter's speed 😁. I like them all 😭, healthy and strong 👍. Hopefully we all could visit Herons someday 🙏. Thx for sharing Peter ..cheers
i don't know the weather and light conditions you have for your trees, but they may be completly different than those in the UK. If you have really high temperatures for instance the trees just stop growing if too hot and may start again once it gets cooler a bit. Not sure if your altitude in Denver plays into there as well, but it could be. But overall I wouldn't worry too much. 6 inches is quite good, I would start worrying if they only get one leave out or none and then stop.
Maples are my favorite too. I have collect all 7 species of maple native to maine and invasive to maine. I have some amur trident and japanese, but i need to get more of their varieties.
I was going to comment about how I loved the shape of the first tree, but the you started the second, and it just kept going form there! So many trees to fall in love with. Mid winter here and I am impatient for spring to get my maples to the next part of their development!
Hello Peter. Thanks for another great video. So nice at this time. I will be trying an experiment wiring maples with insulated electrical wire to minimize bare wire damaging the bark. Karl
it will be better if you wire the branches with an open coil instead of using an insulated wire, as even then the insulation is harder than the bark of the branch and will therefore grow in as fast as with normal wire. An open coil you can imagine like wiring a branch which is 2-3 times as thick as the branch you are wiring in reality. The effect is that the branch is loose inside the wire cage. If I remember right you use a slightly thicker wire when using open coil wiring.
Do you ever return any trees back to the wild? Maybe edit it in such a way with bends or back budding or design or whatever so that if someone with a keen eye and knowledge sees the giant tree in the future they will say "Hey... This tree was definitely shaped by man". Is there any way to make the trunk or main branches a big circle? Or maybe twin snakes rising twists?
I once heard a story of a bonsai guy who was caught collecting from the wild without permission. The authorities fined him and made him plant the tree back from where he got it.
over time it wouldn't matter the initial shape the tree had been when replanted into the wild again, as this shape will outgrow really fast. You would only be able to see a tiny bit of this shape after you cut down the tree. A lot of trees have ingrown fences or other items which were close to a tiny tree grown big
Dear Mr Chan. Thank you for this video. When do you apply autumn fertilizers for better autumn color of your maples? Are these organic or mineral fertilizers? Thank you in advance for your answer😊
the colors of the leaves aren't that important (although they may be nice to look at), they are mostly set into the genetics of the plant, though with variations. What is important with autumn fertilizing is better winter resistance against cold and a better start into the new year for the tree. The old leaves don't need to be fertilized as they will fall off in autumn anyway. As there are quite a lot of different fertilizers available throughout the world, the best is to look up which nutrients are needed for your plants at which time in the year and then using the appropriate one at the right time. And it is a good idea to mix organic and mineral fertilizers if one misses specific nutrients
Hi peter, How important is it for upper branches to follow the same pattern as the three primary branches? I noticed many times your branches do not necessarily follow a pattern
I'm new to this adventure. In the case of the quadruple bonsai with the dead center ... would it be acceptable to leave the dead part of the tree or make "jin" with it? I see some "poetry" or wabi-sabi in it, but I don't know if it's okay.
When you have so many Maples to trim back, why don't you have a big class to take off the long shoots and then show them how to choose the limbs to keep & cut to get a start of a design?
too many variables can come into play here. Too much or not enough water, not enough light. The wrong fertilizer, missing nutrients like iron. Bugs on the leaves like spidermites or aphids or grubs of weevils in the earth which eat the roots for example and so on and so forth. It would be best to take your plant to a nursery if you don't see anything of these and ask what other thing it could be. Good luck
Why should he cut the roots? Peter Chan didn't repot the tree nor did the trees needed to be repotted. You only need to cut roots every few years and only if the tree is too heavily pot bound. Some trees like pines and so need to be repotted every 5-15 years So why should he need to cut the roots?
the man prunes for a living, I love that snip sound and feeling, its like a fresh make over

Thank you, Peter! My maples thank you too. 🥰

The growth on these maples is fantastic. I am lucky if I get 6 inches of growth on my maples each year. (Denver, Colorado.)

You need a greenhouse, notice Peter has one...Try watering them with some kelp fertilizer once every three weeks from spring through summer..

Please do a video in creating a bonsai from a juniperus Sabina aka moor-dense juniper from nursery stock :)
I would like to see something about birch bonsai

What is the word for trees that have leaves that are in proportion with the tree? (That is, trees that don't grow huge leaves when the tree is small)

On the dead center of the multiple tree one.... could you turn it into deadwood or jutë it?
Yes you can but dead wood like jins on maples don t look convincing.
When do u start using the wire 🤔 on your bonsai Mabel and my is about 5 inches

Can you trim a coral bark on video ?

How important is it for upper branches to follow the same pattern as the three primary branches? I noticed many times your branches do not necessarily follow a pattern
It doesnt matter so long as the overall impression is pleasing
Another great video Peter. Where do you get your awesome hawian shirts?
From the internet. Some are actually from Hawaii - they produce the best ones.

I do use it.

I love the maple tree and like to create bonsai. Please let me know where the plant available in Kolkata or nearby.
Maples may not like the Indian climate. They need winter dormancy.
Peter you mentioned that you don't often wire maples. Why is that?
Did you say that the maples can be grown indoors
No, maples need to be outdoors. They need different seasons (with cold winters).
when is the best time to prune maple?
When you have so many Maples to trim back, why don't you have a big class to take off the long shoots and then show them how to choose the limbs to keep & cut to get a start of a design?
I do that on some of my workshops = you should attend if you can.
