I just want to caution you because people cautioned me and I did not listen… Make sure you do not let the wisteria grow through your pergola. Because it grows really thick very quickly and it will crush your pergola. I didn’t listen and probably next year, my pergola is going to be smashed.
I had a bunch of wisteria in the backyard pergola. They were magnificent during bloom but during the other 10 months they were impossible to maintain. Root suckers creeped along the beds, they took over every tree within reach and created a nightmare. Even found it's way up a gutter and to the roof of the house. Eventually they would have pulled down the gutters. They are a huge commitment of time and energy which few people have.
I have some growing on the back of the house just under the gutters, however, I put large hooks up and they grow on that...I simply take it down if it gets too ambitious! I love it and it looks quite romantic, but they do need to be put in their place.
My potted wisteria found a hose going to my second story patio. Once it found something to hold onto it shot up counterclockwise with an annual growth of 25’+. I even had time to air layer the single running branch of what much be Japanese based of the twist. These plants seem to give their all when they find something to hold onto. As it climbed it also got more sun. It literally grew two feet per week during the active growing season and the plant is in a pot. I have the pot standing in water in free draining soil which seems ideal during summer. I’m probably going to graft the top to be multicolored if I can find some scion within the next week or two.
Such a great to the point video, I am a beginner with wisteria, so I'm hoping mine will flower next year. I did buy mine in a reduced section and it wasn't in flower, I don't know if this was a mistake but I am going to persevere, it's against a south facing garage wall. Fingers crossed.
My 15-year-old wisteria has not flowered yet. It is in full sun however, I never gave it a hard prune… Thanks to lots of gardening videos today I gave it a hard, prune back to three buds. Fingers crossed. I will get some flowers. I also realized how thick the stem has become. It’s eventually going to crush the PVC archway. It is growing against. 💔
we are well into April, and I don’t have any flowers yet! Every day I check my plant, and it still seems dormant. I’m hoping I didn’t kill it with the prune.
Yes, the double flowering, scented Japanese black dragon; every year my mother cuts it to a stump, before it strangles the drainpipe and clogs up the guttering. Never seen a full length flower tendril grow on it, but then never had foliage long enough to supply one. (Slightly like saying f*** O** to an algorithm that’s constantly looking for prey to project onto & feed from) And much more like red dragon, from silence of the lambs, who only requires blindness of deeds and core character values, with the development of tactical political correctness as a Ruse to look like a nicer person.
Well, fingers crossed! I just checked my plant and I believe I have four blossoms coming!!! Hopefully they will survive a hard freeze if we get one. I will be so happy that people will be sick of me talking about my wisteria flowers.
I have a wisteria I planted 20 odd years ago. It has never grown much - it's about 4 feet high. It has never flowered. It faces south in a walled garden, in France :/ I live in hope. I bought one for my mother, and it flowered from the start.
Wow, reading people have had these 10/15 yrs and they haven't flowered!? Would that be the soil, position are they just slow to flower like that? I have a vision of white wisteria and red roses but i might be dead in 10-15 yrs lol Are there any other wisteria like plants anyone can think of that might make a good alternative, not much of a fan of clematis though. Thanks
Hi! I bought a 5’ wisteria that looked almost as a small tree, it bloomed the year after I planted and it hasn’t bloomed since then. I did pruned late winter and it has grown allot but no blooms sadly. Please help.
Just here to say white wisteria against white wall - it’s a look!! Monochromatic color schemes can be incredibly beautiful in their cleanliness. Purple against red brick is very vintage, very bridgerton. While beautiful as well, i wouldn’t identify with it hence would plant white and white
Greetings. I need some advice please. I want to plant a Wisteria by my home wall . Is this plant giving any damage to the walls or foundation? Thank you .
I just planted a wisteria. A day after planting we had a drop in temperature near freezing and then again weather got better, but my wisteria's leaves started to turn yellow and dry out. Should I do anything? What is the best solution? Thanks
thank you. Such useful information. I planted my wisteria 10 years ago. I have always pruned it twice a year, In July and February, but I have never had flowers. My plant is grafted and is on a West facing house wall. Should I give up on it or not prune it one year to see what happens? Maybe I am being over zealous with the pruning? Thank yo so much :-)
Just bought one online , gutted it has no flowers , no label 😮 ,learnt it can take 20 years sometimes to flower. I can’t even remember what colour it is meant to be .
Hopefully Matt's advice will be helpful to care for your new Wisteria! We also have this pruning video you might find useful: ua-cam.com/video/P0qDeGhEjLY/v-deo.html
I have a beautiful wisteria but the aroma is not good. I put it in a bouquet and brought in the house. It smelled like cat pee. Yuck! Again, it is beautiful.
I’ve got a large pergola that’s just screaming out for one these gorgeous plants. Thank you so much for all the great tips!

Glad you liked it!
thank you so much! it was very complete information!
Great video thank you 🌻
Thank you, great points.
Reminds me of my childhood...we had a purple one growing up a tall tree but oddly enough most of the flowering happened no higher than 5 or so feet.
Great video. Thanks again.

Can it grow in hot weather and survive the summer heat of 48degree celsius?

There is another RHS video showing how to prune Wisteria in later summer and again in later winter. Well worth a look.
thank you :-)@@robertbray3685
Can I take this plant to my country?
Same here… does not grow as fast as they say … mine only flowered once in 7 years with pruning!! Japanese beetle love them!!!! Get the traps out now!!
I have had a wisteria plant for 20 years and has not blossomed once it is facing south east on Lake Champlain
Thank you.
Hey where was the nursery you were at, at the beginning of the video?
