Never in all its history has America been so obese. 160 million Americans are severely overweight. Faced with this staggering figure, healthcare professionals are trying to find new, more efficient and more aggressive treatments for this illness. The rising obesity crisis has given momentum to the relatively new movement of body positivity. Through lucrative social media accounts, popular magazine covers and even successful 'Miss Plus' beauty pageants, overweight Americans are learning to flaunt their curves and love themselves no matter their size.
There's a McDonald's, a Burger King, a Taco Bell, a KFC....yes, but is there a SUPER MARKET?? I'm overweight and only have myself to blame. We're not victims. We're lazy. It's a battle, but we need to take responsibility for our choices.
There is a responsibility to yourself to have a better diet...but, if the food that is everywhere, and advertised everywhere, and advertised as good and healthy, and saves time, and is affordable, it can't just be down to the individual to make better choices. It is even aimed at children, who grow up thinking that this is fine, because they have always been told it is fine, even good, even our governments are part of the problem here, they are aware of the problem, but keep taking money from the big food lobbyists, and allow the high fat, high sugar, high chemical based foods to flood our markets,

I mostly agree, but its not one or the other. We can live in a world that is set up to allow people to eat themselves to death so companies can profit. This is wrong. And also person responsibility is a major factor. Honestly fast food is a bad system since they cant even afford to pay their employees a living wage while offering cheap calorie dense food that even poor people can afford to eat regularly. I think both these companies and the people who are being "lazy" and not taking care of themselves have a lot of room for improvement.

The rich were fat when food was scarce, so you had to have money to eat well, and those with money didn't need to slave away so they were more sedentary. The poor are fat now because good healthy food is scarce, so you have to have time/money to cook, eat well, and you probably need to be wealthy to 'afford the time' to play sports, exercise, overall have healthy hobbies, whilst those working 2-3 jobs don't. @@6kat103 I was just rewatching the documentary on the Mennonites. And while i cannot find common ground with their community/way of life, there are some takeaways for a simpler way of life- like the eating of treats (in this case it was ice cream) once or twice a year.
Allowing children to be obese should be considered child abuse. At the very least it should be considered criminal for our schools to feed what they do to children.
Unfortunately, schools are trying to find ways to cut spending, and junk food is one way to do that. The children would be better if they ate more real, nutritional food.

I'm fat. I cannot run. I cannot jump. I have difficulty with stairs and dancing. It is not fun. My knees hurt. Trust me, the fat positivity people in this video are leaving quite a bit out. I'm aiming to change things. My goal is to be able to run, jump, dance, do stairs and be free of knee pain. I also travel quite a bit and really do not want to be accommodated in fat. I'm losing weight.
I had a stroke in sept, at the age of 50. I was 236lbs at 5'2. In 8 months I'm down to 170 and dropping. I live a low carb life style, no way I'm going back to eating junk. The SAD (standard american diet) is a death sentence. I feel good I now get out 3 days a week and walk 4 to 10 miles, depending on how I feel. I couldn't walk a full mile a year ago. I have a rare burger but it's bunless and I never eat processed oils. I'm no longer a type two diabetic, I feel so much better. I look so much better. I can't wait until I'm done with my transformation. It feels wonderful.
Good for you. Majority from the 90's on got more fat/obese over time caused by a change in dietary recommendations from mostly meat, eggs, fish, dairy, fat with sides of veg and the odd dessert to mostly veg, grains, legumes, veg oils and fruit. Started I believe because a few US Senators eating way too much rich food had heart attacks and colleagues wanted answers. Plenty of plant based advocates and cereal manufacturers willing to put their hands up and take the funds to produce studies saying what they wanted to hear. The theory being lower calories, plenty of undigestible expelled fibre will 'fix' all issues. Most not enjoying the diet add processed or swapped to processed. This experiment is a massive disaster.
I was 236 lbs 6 years ago. I lost my car and had to start taking the bus. Which ment I had to walk outside in the heat of Florida. I got down to 150,lbs . Today I've gained 20lbs back. It's very scary. There are 2 reasons I feel are why . The first one is I started taking Uber more . Which ment I'm not walking as much and the second is stress. I know that when I'm financially stressed out I snack more. So not exercising like I was has also added to my stress because I'm not releasing the stress. So I got terrified of putting on to much weight so I started taking the bus at least one to three times a week. I've been trying to cut sugar out but I'm so addicted to it that I get headaches and sometimes I feel lightheaded. So that's a work in process. I definitely don't want to gain anymore weight so I have to put in the work even when I don't want to. Especially when I don't want to 😊

I agree. Its sad seeing fat positivity influencers die in their 30s and 40s. I think we should help overweight people feel normal and human so they aren't deterred from going to the gym or seeing doctors and nutritionists. We shouldn't demonize fat people but also don't allow people to lie and say you can be "healthy at any size" when after maybe 300 pounds there are serious health risks and mobility limitations. Its like we can only eat so much food in a lifetime and if when you are 30 you already ate 100 years worth of food, its game over.

Went full carnivore in Oct of '23 and today I am down 80 lbs and walking without a walker or cane. Carnivore diet dropped my weight safely and healed tons of autoimmune diseases I had including and not limited to 'hashimotos thyroid disease.' Praise GOD FOR BEEF and fish and eggs & butter. I was NEVER hungry and it was SO EASY!!! At 66 yrs old I finally have my life back! Joining a gym this week!!!!
I was obese for a few years. My doctor kept telling me to lose weight because diabetes, heart disease, etc. It took a medical emergency and the look of sheer horror in my families eyes as I lay in that hospital bed. I did a lifestyle change. No empty calories, soft drinks, beer, juices, and sugary coffees and donuts goodbye! Wouldn't you know it? The weight started coming off! I took exercising and meal prepping for my togo and work meals. Lost all the weight, got into great physical shape. At nearly 50, I am in the best shape of my life! Made the change 14 years ago, and now it's just how ai live.
@misanthrophex Yes and no. Lifestyle change can be difficult for some. The motivation has to be there, and the discipline has to remain for life. But, it is definitely doable for all.
I am Italian and i eat at McDonalds, once a week, a salad with fried chicken and my daughter, chicken bites and fried potatoes and after yoghurt or a slice of ananas. I drink water, she a small orange juice. I think it's important not to go every day to eat fast food, just in rare occasions, maximum once a week. I'd die couldn't eat fresh vegetable or fruit for more then 2 days.
I am Japanese. Here in Japan, if you are fat, people tell you to lose weight for better life. "Body positive" idea in USA is one of phenomenons that allow not improving oneself.

I'm from the Netherlands, and in my country, going to a restaurant is something you do every now and then. Going out to a restaurant for breakfast is something nobody does here. Out for lunch? Hmm, sometimes, maybe. We make our own meals! That makes such a difference. We buy our groceries at the supermarket, and we cook. Prepare meals. Take our lunch to work. Sure, you can still cook unhealthy if you want, but in most cases, people don't. I have a hard time understanding why a lot of Americans eat out so often, sometimes every day. It's astounding to me.
Can’t speak for everyone but on the occasions when I feel like I need to order food (I cook though), it’s always because of high commute times and a busy schedule. I often come home exhausted and there’s no one to help me cook. That’s from an American who cooks on a weekly basis and enjoys the process. Various factors add up.
I honestly don't understand it either, other than its for the convenience. It is astounding that people don't realize that not only is it not very healthy, but the expense of doing that every day is shocking to me.. I cannot say that I love cooking, but my husband and I rarely go out to eat. Usually, when we do, it is for dinner and we do that about every 6-8 weeks, and its NOT going to a fast food restaurant.
Look up "food desert" - it's a real problem in vast areas of the US. I'm a Brit but worked a lot in the US - even eating out on expenses was hard work to eat healthily.
Relative to my country, Canada, the fast food meals in the US are cheaper and the portions larger. And working people in the US seem more pressed for time than many other countries - long commutes, fewer holidays, longer work hours. That could explain much of the problem.
The last 20 years also Europe is following America, you only have to look at the stats and the number of fast food joints that has exploded the last 20 years .
If obesity wasn't a problem in our country it would just be a funny novelty. It's not the restaurants problem that our food industrial complex is crooked and that our citizens are dying.
I find it weird. The fact that many of the customers could be wearing a hospital gown getting real bypasses and being in fear and mortal danger. And the sexualisation too is weird. I lost 80lbs in less than one year by just cutting out carbs and sugars, incorporating intermittent fasting, and exercising a few days out of the week. Save your money people!
Don’t be afraid of carbs. Try eating brown, red or black rice. Sweet potatoes are good too! They will keep you fuller for longer! I promise you that. Put some virgin coconut oil in your oats. That’ll keep you full for longer as well❤️ avocados are good too!

At my highest weight of 435 lbs morbidly obese, pre diabetic and high blood pressure. I was absolutely miserable, I got back into the gym in June 2021, prioritizing lifting weights over cardio and eating in a calorie deficit. I've lost 233 lbs naturally, I know not everyone can do it that way, and they need medical intervention, but that's the way I wanted to go. It can be done if done right, but you have to want to do it. It has to be sustainable. This is for the rest of your life.

Having visited America, I was shocked how people are lazy to walk - everybody is driving a car, even walkable distances. Add to that the junk food and no wonder obesity is a problem.
In a VERY small defense there they make so so many places dangerous to walk to get people to buy more cars. I was lucky to live a 15 min walk from work for a few years but I got to drive 30 minutes to get ANYWHERE rn
I live 3 miles from my office and to get to the public transportation to it involves crossing a several multi lane roads as much as 8 lanes (4 going in either direction). Also folks can't drive here lets be honest.

In the 2022 I was in America. what I saw was that the average foodshop don't have good vegetables, neither a good variaty. Every time I ate junk food there was only a symbolic portion of veggies on it. Eating plenty of veg and less carbs makes a big difference
Buying 2 seats because you are fat and then the airlines allocates one of the two seats as 21A and the other as 19B is also an injustice. 😂 I was so mad! But most of the time buying 2 seats works out. Ultraprocessed food is highly addictive and I have battled my whole life gaining and losing hundreds of pounds.
Cooking is very simple unless you make it difficult. It does not have to be so diverse, only healthy. Breakfast: 5 eggs and 5 sausage. Lunch: plain yogurt. Dinner: fried ground meat in lard or butter, add some cut up vegetables, a potato that's been cooked a few days ago, or some boiled rice, brown a bit and serve! For snack 2 pieces of fresh fruit. That's what we eat daily. It's cheaper than anything you can buy in fast food joints, low carb, and much more nutritious.
YES! I especially love cooking videos from grandmas who have a lifetime of experience. No fancy cameras, no prentions, no expensive ingredients, just good basic healthy food...
Same here. I love looking on UA-cam for recipes. I just adjust the ingredients (such as sugar) if I need to so that it fits my preference. . I never thought I would enjoy meal prepping, but to me, it's fun, better for your health (since you control everything that goes in your meals), and much better for your pocket. 🙂🙂
When I was 10 my parents and I moved to the US from Israel. I was a normal weight child. Within 2 years of living in the Midwest, eating most of my meals at home and at school (yeah, school cafeteria, I’m looking at you), and only occasionally going out for fast food, I became overweight. Thank God we moved back at that point or else I don’t know how far it would have gotten.
It definitely depends on where you are in America. Certain parts of the country are definitely more overweight than others. The Midwest and the South are way more overweight and obese compared to say the Pacific Northwest.

Why has the USA forgot how to cook food at home? You don't need to eat fast food. Cook at homes. You can choose what you eat. It's more effort yes but the trade off is worse.

Facts!!! People are just lazy plain and simple. The only anomaly are people in food deserts that don’t have access to fresh food but I agree and see if everyday. Someone would rather go to chipotle or McDonald’s then going to the market.
The kicker is that the whole body positivity movement wasn’t even about weight, it was initially for the disabled and those with physical deformities/impairments to basically say ‘hey, sometimes a body looks like this, it’s normal’. So the at activism movement hijacked a perfectly reasonable, legitimate and perhaps even necessary movement to push BS pseudoscience.

I live in the UK. Im a 50yr old female and I've always been overweight. When I was 48yrs old i started weight training. Now im all muscle and feel amazing . Its all about mind control.
I had been fit all my life until I had a serious injury at the age of 43. I became severely obese within two years. I can't imagine people can live like that and claim they feel wonderful. Obesity is disability and there is a reason why those influencers are not older than 40. You can stay quite healthy and fat if you are young, but above the age of 40, it's essentially a death sentence.
Be grateful also that the UK still follows the excellent ( and high ) EU rules on food safety. However, some maniac Brexiteers still want us to lower the standards to allow in hormone-drenched meat from Australia and New Zealand, where food standards are lower. American standards are even lower than that, and chlorine-washed chicken is just one example. Heinz sells tomato paste in the UK and the USA. The cans look the same but look at the listed ingredients: the USA version reads like the contents of a chemistry lab.
I remember going on holiday to Florida in 89 (from the UK). My mum and dad could not believe how large Americans were. Cut to the Uk in 2024 and we’re not far from the US.

Not true actually. My great grandmas were all obese and lived to be in their nineties. I’m not saying obesity is healthy - they ended up insulin dependent and disabled from a stroke. But it’s simply not accurate to say there are no obese elderly ppl.

As an obese teenager this made me wanna actually lose weight. But it also made me ashamed and disgusted at my country that we all let ourselves become like this.
You can do this. Just focus on yourself and your health. I’m only 31 and being obese has caused me so many issues. I was getting out of breath doing basic things and my sleep was awful. I lost over 40 lbs but I still have more to go. I can finally exercise again and not get out of breath. Please focus on your health now. I wish you all the best.
A big reason why the US has this issue moreso than countries in Europe are related to the foods we ingest. Many of the ingredients are so unhealthy they're illegal in Europe. It's better to minimize all processed foods and buy locally when possible. Cooking at home is key since many restaurants use pre-processed food as well. It's cheaper, too. Avoiding grains has helped me a lot. People can learn more by reading/listening to the Wheat Belly books or watching associated videos here on UA-cam. Healthy weight loss isn't something that can be done through willpower or starvation. While limiting oneself to a vegetarian or carnivore diet can help some people, it's also dangerous for some people. Everyone's dietary needs are different, and consulting a dietician can really help with feeling better and improving your gut microbiota.

I went low carb in Oct 2021 after being diagnosed with diabetes; remitted successfully. Once I reduced the carbs the cravings also reduced. Without even trying I lost weight; I can only do stretching, strengthening and light hand weights due to back and knee issues. I now weigh what I did back in the mid 1980s before having children. Went from 80kg down to 60kg. Waist was 44" and it's now 36". Other than shoes and socks I have to get a whole new wardrobe of clothes. Thankfully I've been able to get a lot of my tops / blouses from the second hand shop.
@@isaiahoreweme6625*You definitely need to have a motivator* I didn't know if it would work for the diabetes but I watched a lot of videos and read comments about people's experiences and decided to at least try it. The doctor wanted to put me on metformin, a statin and see a dietician (which I did - a hospital diabetes dietician in Australia - and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs and that I would lose muscle; I proved her wrong - I got checked by a exercise physiologist after 1 year). For me it was learning that you can go blind and/or end up on kidney dialysis (I already knew you could lose toes / limbs). My husband ended up on peritoneal dialysis after he contracted Wegeners Granulomatosis. We checked out about both types of dialysis and he decided on PD. Both forms of dialysis impact your life in a big way.
@@davisholman8149 Thank you. You do need to have a strong motivation to do it. After being diagnosed with diabetes I learned that you can go blind and/or end up on dialysis. That scared me into trying low carb (after watching lots of videos and reading viewer comments about how it had worked for them). The diet didn't seem "wrong". I've now been low carb for over 2.5 years because I feel so much better on it than eating the way I had been. After a few weeks I stopped craving the carbs.
also had 20 kg to loose. managed to loose 10 kg with low carb diet and now am stuck with those 12 kg. cant excercise bc of knee and auto immune disease and am about to start some calistenia routine and see if can start loosing some more kg.
I have a family photo taken on the family farm in 1906. This was during a family reunion and there are over 30 people spanning 4 generations. The largest of them would be considered below average in weight today. The old guys have arms and necks that are chiseled out of wood. They didn’t have remote controls, central air or internal combustion engines to carry them around. They WORKED. And they ate at home.
Today I weigh 150 lbs, 5'6 tall. I lost 45 lbs within two years. I removed flour and sugar from my diet and I eat only two meals a day. Breakfast at 7 am and dinner at 2 pm. It was enough. I have an insulin resistance.
Heart attack grill literally had customers having a heart attack and dying inside and outside of the restaurant. Spokesman died at 29 of pneumonia. SMH...it's gross.

It's not surprising. People who have underlying Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes can actually have a heart attack or even stroke from eating huge amounts of fats and sugars at once. It's not unheard of, but not sure how common it is. Either way, the Heart Attack Grill , admittedly is encouraging bad health and bad habits to a nation that is now the fattest and sickest of all industrial countries, and it's only getting worse and our health care system seems unable to keep up It's not funny.
Correct me if I am wrong but I feel people in America eat outside food much more than eating food made at their homes. Even I have seen people order healthy foods like salad from some restaurant. Like make it yourself brother and sister.
Depends entirely on who you compare against. Most cities in China tend towards eating at restaurants and street vendors. Hold over from Mao's cultural revolution where centralizing agriculture and optimizing work productivity from the population led to discouraging home cooking (right up to melting down most pots and pans for worthless 'steel' to give people no choice) and encouraging more time, ingredient, and distributionally efficient food access through restaurants. It continues in part from momentum and in part from the 6 days of 12 hours workweek (plus some work from home for white collars) leaving little time to cook after commuting. Their food is also generally much healthier excluding the rather extraordinary sodium intake, but without other compounding factors that's not that bad for most. Snacking repeatedly causes a constant production of insulin by the pancreas. The surest way to get or aggravate diabetes. Surgeons know that but only their income counts.

I think you took that out of context. What they mean is that processed foods in grocery stores are affordable for everyone, while organic foods & healthier foods are out of many people's price ranges, especially if they have more mouths to feed. This is one reason why I have started trying to fast somewhat frequently. It builds self control, supports weight loss, & is easy on your pockets.

To some extend it's a cultural/habitual thing. I often see kids getting chicken and chips for £5-6/portion after school, rather than having a fresh meal cooked for the same money OR sometimes they eat it as a pre-dinner/unnecessarily extra meal. Often, moms who claim they can't afford healthy food don't miss a manicure or hair appointment. Get the priorities right. Get cooking. Eat less. Move.

indeed! I'v got a McDonald's at a 5 min distance from my apartment, yet I think I can count on one hand the amount of times I've visited it over the past 3-4 years. Stop complaining about fast food restaurants when you can go also just COOK.
They're not victims. They're tied to the ease/convenience of fast food. I started going to the gym 4 - 6 times a week and staying away from fast food. It's definitely harder/ time-consuming to cook healthy. I've lost 20 lbs over the last 4 months, which isn't easy because even products that say they're healthy aren't truly healthy.
i never eat fast food. Ate it as a kid, then when i became an adult, never occured to me i should eat hamburgers or pizzas (yes, i don't even eat pizza). I substitute that with whole fried potatoes or frozen fruits if i have the urge to munch. But of course my main meals are different kinds of soups and a shitload of fish and salads.
Addiction is a very real thing that a massive percentage of humans currently struggle with. Whether it's food, alcohol, drugs, sex, social media etc., what can start out as innocuous pleasures can slowly (or quickly) become a problem. When certain chemical pathways develop in your brain, it's a huge undertaking to re-establish healthier habits. I really dislike this mindset of 'lack of self control'. As animals, we want to feel good, and we want high calorie food. Clearly what has happened in the US is a societal problem and solely blaming the individual for their moral failings is pretty lame. I'm not saying the individual isn't responsible, but the greatly society and culture strongly factors into all this. Wildly overprescribe opiates? You get people addicted to opiates. Apps designed to constantly feed us videos? You get people who spend hours everyday doom scrolling. Create a culture based on driving, consumerism, both parents working and heavily advertised fast food? Of course you're going to get people addicted to food.
I didn’t let surgery be my only option. I fasted and ate super healthy cutting carbs and added sugars from my diet. I lost over 100lbs in just a year. I was almost 300 lbs but now I sit around 190lbs. It’s only hard for the first month but trust me, if it was easy everyone would do it. Yeah, most people don't stop to consider that they're metabolically unhealthy, and it's gonna take time for their body to start functioning correctly, especially if they're diabetic and their body just stores fat and doesn't hardly use it. You can loose weight quickly on keto, but early weight loss is mostly water weight. Further, if you don't have enough protein, you may loose muscle mass while keeping much of the fat. Once you've alleviated the burden on your insulin for a long enough period of time, you'll start shedding the fat rather than storing it.

I am German and visited a small town at the Five Finger lakes some years ago. I usually eat healthy but I literally had no options there. There was a Wendy‘s, a Taco Bell, Burger King, McDonald‘s and a Starbucks. I did not see one damn supermarket. I was walking and had no car. Fast Food was all around..no supermarket in walking distance. There were some restaurants in the city center but even there: mostly unhealthy options. I then ordered a salad and sweet potatoe fries. The salad came with a high calorie dressing, the fries were covered with some super sweet brownish sauce almost like caramel. And this meal was more expensive than Fast Food. It‘s not just the people‘s fault in my opinion. The state does not do enough to make healthy food available. We are responsible yes, but what do I do as a average or low income person when Coca Cola is cheaper than water? When Wendy‘s is next door and veggies are more expensive than a hot dog? Don‘t blame everything on people. In Israel you have vegetarian and vegan fresh food the second you step out of your door. Did not see one McDonald‘s in Tel Aviv. Guess it‘s hidden sonewhere in a shopping center.

You’re 100% right. America is a capitalist country where they push cheap, fast food companies to earn money. Additionally, for a low income family they are much more likely to spend their money on the dollar menu buying $1 cheeseburgers vs a grocery store where an avocado is $2-3 per. Our food stamp programs also supports poor and cheap diet options. So again, why would a low income person spend all their food stamps on a handful of fruits and veggies when they can buy carts full of sugary cereals, ramen noodles, and other processed foods? I hope there with be a reckoning one day in the US. Sadly we’ve transitioned into a culture of people that won’t outlive our children all at the hands of a dozen giant corporations that are profiting off this way of life.

once I went to Vegas. It was almost impossible to get fruit and vegetable anywhere, in restaurant. And the poor lettuce or tomato or pickles in burger, most of the time, customers would take it off. I understood everything about Middle America. It was not the case in NY.

Where I live in europe, we make fun of fat people even in our own friends group. One time a friend got a little bit overwight and we make so much fun of him that he now is sporty and thin again
im 5ft 2in 200lbs, i used to think i was always destined to be fat, until i saw this doc and realized if i don't do anything now it can get much worse, i just purged my house of junk food and am going shopping tomorrow for fresh produce. thank you for motivating me. (p.s it helps that this doc has turned me off burgers)
keep it up , and start exercising too it's a great way to lose weight fast , start mild exercises and increase intensity as you go . and don't do no crazy diet , only start what you can maintain for the rest of your life , no point in dieting for a month and breaking it afterwards .

There may be numerous fast food places in town, but there’s also a grocery store with meats, veggies and fruit! Teach yourself a little bit about nutrition, portion size and healthier cooking. I didn’t give up my favorite foods I limited them drastically. I did that and started walking and lost 150lbs!! It can be done and it’s our own responsibility! I will never look like a model and that’s ok. I don’t have high cholesterol, heart disease or diabetes. You can do it too!

I don’t spend money on frivolous things or entertainment until all my bills are paid and that includes my food budget. I don’t get food stamps. Sometimes I get food from the food bank or churches. A healthy diet is extremely important to me!

There is nothing wrong with junk food itself. Look at the Netherlands - Dutch people eat a lot of bread, cheese and fries - and they are still very skinny. If you move and have healthy approach to food, you can eat whatever you want.
I accidentally fixed it by going organic. No more food cravings. In 2 weeks pain, inflammation and cravings were gone. Down from 170 to 115 without trying. Just eat real food without the chemicals

@@NitzpitzYeah but they've got microwave in bag frozen veggies that are cheap, and it doesn't take a culinary genius to throw in a tablespoon of olive oil and powdered seasonings like salt, pepper, garlic powder, Italian herbs, etc. to make it taste good, have with baked chicken cutlets lightly coated in oil (I use oil or butter spray and garlic powder instead of peeling garlic because I'm lazy af), 1 serving of pasta, 1 serving pasta sauce, 1 Oz cheese, measured on a $10 digital food scale with an auto tare function, at least half the plate being veg. There are other improvised lazy quick easy healthy meals. The point is that even lazy healthy chicken and veg doesn't have to be tasteless boring garbage. There are thousands upon thousands of simple video recipes if you don't want to read through elaborate recipes with exotic ingredients. Microwave potato with Greek yogurt, bacon bits, 1 Oz cheese, 3 Oz baked chicken or 1 serving canned chili, and a bit pile of roasted or sauteed or flavors steam in bag veggies is another good quick, easy, cheap healthy, tasty meals. And you can still have burgers, just skip the fries and soda. I have disabilities limiting my ability to stand a long time sautéing or chopping things, and yeah it's harder when you're limited and in pain, but there are workarounds. Not everyone finds the workarounds quickly, but I have no time for defeatist attitudes that none of it is in your control. I didn't know about practical methods for healthy eating until the Internet went big, I was overweight until I moved out and chose my own food based on that info. Seek out the information and keep trying.

If you have been eating over-salted food all your life, richly covered with artificial ketchup and synthetic mayonnaise, finished with a sugary dessert on top of drinking sugar water with a teaspoon of coffee and a heaping dose of artificial "whipped cream", then it is difficult to feel the natural taste of vegetables or simply grilled good quality meat or fish, feel the smell and taste of herbs or freshly ground and brewed coffee.
This is sickening to watch. I'AM 6ft 1 at 180 lbs and still trying to lose weight. As a stroke survivor eight years ago have managed to keep the weight off. As a nurse, I can tell you that if you saw what becomes of people who don't take care of themselves.

Fast food is no longer cheap. A meal from Mickey d will cost you 13 or 14 bucks. You can get a couple a bags of salad and some lean chicken for around the same price.
I saw obesity on dad's side and drug addiction on mom's side - alcoholism on obese side, and narcissism on drug addict, skinny part. Best of both worlds. But my love for nutrition has healed so many and I thank God.
Regarding the plane seats, I agree - if you spill into 2 seats then you pay for those 2 seats. But I also feel you should pay more for clothes also, a shirt size S should not be the same price as a shirt size XXL since mine is less fabric and less working time spent on.
I’m from a small country in the Caribbean. Since second grade mandatory you receive cooking classes. Back when buying grocery store box bread was seemed as expensive, I had to help my mom bake the baguette and cookies for my school week snacks. Now I relocated because of work and I still bake most of my stuff at home. Yes in the USA I can feel everything is sooo easy to acquired and accessible. But investing in my tradition and knowing what I eat it’s very important even if it’s a time consuming task

I live in the Caribbean too, also a small country, and a relatively poor one. The amount of processed American food on the shop shelves here is astonishing, and I am always surprised that no one seems to read the contents labels. If they did, they would see an enormous number of chemicals and additives. There is also a growing obesity problem here, mainly due to junk food ( KFC is always packed out ) lack of exercise, and too much drinking. Kudos to Barbados ( not where I live ) for having the courage to impose a sugar tax on unhealthy processed drinks and foods.

Last month, I watched a filmstrip of the actual Woodstock from 1970. I was shocked in that there was not ONE overweight person in the entire film. People stopped cooking from scratch. Fast food is addictive by design - it tastes good because of the excess sugar and salt. Cook from scratch 95% of the time. You will be healthier.
@@camilleaudain6695 Too much sodium is bad for your heart, but it doesn't make you far. Excess sugar on the other hand and high amount of carbs do make you fat, very quickly. People just lost self-control and stopped thinking "should I be eating this?" and instead looked at it like "well, this is cheaper, so I will go with this."

I went to visit my sister a few months ago in Houston. From the airport to her house, we must have passed by at LEAST 300 fast food restaurants, trucks, and stands. 5 Chick Fila's, 9 McDonald's, 7 Burger Kings and God knows what else all within a 5 mile drive from each other. And all this across local restaurants that serve amazing food that tastes better than the chains, and with better prices. Sidewalks cut off without warning, cars going 70 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone. The public transportation seemed scarce. God bless those people, I can't say I was shocked at the number of morbidly obese people I saw. I came home wanting to loose my own excess fat. Since that visit I've since lost 15 lbs and I hope to lose 15 more before 2025. It's hard but not impossible. Maintaining my current weight of 190 takes more effort than it would to just not eat excessively.
I sympathize with you. I’m 1.58 m and weighing in on 64 kilo’s. My doctor told me last week I was ‘pushing it to extremes’. Now I have to lose 10 kg 😮. Already lost one. Back to the apps and calories counting. And stop watching these vids while on the treadmill to console myself with ‘that’s really bad, I’m not that bad off’.

The rich were fat when food was scarce, so you had to have money to eat well, and those with money didn't need to slave away so they were more sedentary.
The poor are fat now because good healthy food is scarce, so you have to have time/money to cook, eat well, and you probably need to be wealthy to 'afford the time' to play sports, exercise, overall have healthy hobbies, whilst those working 2-3 jobs don't.

Allowing children to be obese should be considered child abuse. At the very least it should be considered criminal for our schools to feed what they do to children.

I'm fat. I cannot run. I cannot jump. I have difficulty with stairs and dancing. It is not fun. My knees hurt. Trust me, the fat positivity people in this video are leaving quite a bit out. I'm aiming to change things. My goal is to be able to run, jump, dance, do stairs and be free of knee pain. I also travel quite a bit and really do not want to be accommodated in fat. I'm losing weight.

I had a stroke in sept, at the age of 50. I was 236lbs at 5'2. In 8 months I'm down to 170 and dropping. I live a low carb life style, no way I'm going back to eating junk. The SAD (standard american diet) is a death sentence. I feel good I now get out 3 days a week and walk 4 to 10 miles, depending on how I feel. I couldn't walk a full mile a year ago. I have a rare burger but it's bunless and I never eat processed oils. I'm no longer a type two diabetic, I feel so much better. I look so much better. I can't wait until I'm done with my transformation. It feels wonderful.
Good for you. Majority from the 90's on got more fat/obese over time caused by a change in dietary recommendations from mostly meat, eggs, fish, dairy, fat with sides of veg and the odd dessert to mostly veg, grains, legumes, veg oils and fruit. Started I believe because a few US Senators eating way too much rich food had heart attacks and colleagues wanted answers. Plenty of plant based advocates and cereal manufacturers willing to put their hands up and take the funds to produce studies saying what they wanted to hear. The theory being lower calories, plenty of undigestible expelled fibre will 'fix' all issues. Most not enjoying the diet add processed or swapped to processed. This experiment is a massive disaster.
I was 236 lbs 6 years ago. I lost my car and had to start taking the bus. Which ment I had to walk outside in the heat of Florida. I got down to 150,lbs . Today I've gained 20lbs back. It's very scary. There are 2 reasons I feel are why . The first one is I started taking Uber more . Which ment I'm not walking as much and the second is stress. I know that when I'm financially stressed out I snack more. So not exercising like I was has also added to my stress because I'm not releasing the stress. So I got terrified of putting on to much weight so I started taking the bus at least one to three times a week. I've been trying to cut sugar out but I'm so addicted to it that I get headaches and sometimes I feel lightheaded. So that's a work in process. I definitely don't want to gain anymore weight so I have to put in the work even when I don't want to. Especially when I don't want to 😊

I agree. Its sad seeing fat positivity influencers die in their 30s and 40s. I think we should help overweight people feel normal and human so they aren't deterred from going to the gym or seeing doctors and nutritionists. We shouldn't demonize fat people but also don't allow people to lie and say you can be "healthy at any size" when after maybe 300 pounds there are serious health risks and mobility limitations.
Its like we can only eat so much food in a lifetime and if when you are 30 you already ate 100 years worth of food, its game over.

Went full carnivore in Oct of '23 and today I am down 80 lbs and walking without a walker or cane. Carnivore diet dropped my weight safely and healed tons of autoimmune diseases I had including and not limited to 'hashimotos thyroid disease.' Praise GOD FOR BEEF and fish and eggs & butter. My doctor kept telling me to lose weight because diabetes, heart disease, etc. It took a medical emergency and the look of sheer horror in my families eyes as I lay in that hospital bed. I did a lifestyle change. No empty calories, soft drinks, beer, juices, and sugary coffees and donuts goodbye! Wouldn't you know it? The weight started coming off! I took exercising and meal prepping for my togo and work meals. Lost all the weight, got into great physical shape. At nearly 50, I am in the best shape of my life! Made the change 14 years ago, and now it's just how ai live.

I'm from the Netherlands, and in my country, going to a restaurant is something you do every now and then. Going out to a restaurant for breakfast is something nobody does here. Out for lunch? Hmm, sometimes, maybe. We make our own meals! That makes such a difference. We buy our groceries at the supermarket, and we cook. Prepare meals. Take our lunch to work. Sure, you can still cook unhealthy if you want, but in most cases, people don't. I have a hard time understanding why a lot of Americans eat out so often, sometimes every day. It's astounding to me.
Can’t speak for everyone but on the occasions when I feel like I need to order food (I cook though), it’s always because of high commute times and a busy schedule. I often come home exhausted and there’s no one to help me cook. That’s from an American who cooks on a weekly basis and enjoys the process. Various factors add up.
I honestly don't understand it either, other than its for the convenience. It is astounding that people don't realize that not only is it not very healthy, but the expense of doing that every day is shocking to me.. I cannot say that I love cooking, but my husband and I rarely go out to eat. Usually, when we do, it is for dinner and we do that about every 6-8 weeks, and its NOT going to a fast food restaurant.
Look up "food desert" - it's a real problem in vast areas of the US.
I'm a Brit but worked a lot in the US - even eating out on expenses was hard work to eat healthily.
Relative to my country, Canada, the fast food meals in the US are cheaper and the portions larger. And working people in the US seem more pressed for time than many other countries - long commutes, fewer holidays, longer work hours. That could explain much of the problem.
The last 20 years also Europe is following America, you only have to look at the stats and the number of fast food joints that has exploded the last 20 years .

At my highest weight of 435 lbs morbidly obese, pre diabetic and high blood pressure. I was absolutely miserable, I got back into the gym in June 2021, prioritizing lifting weights over cardio and eating in a calorie deficit. I've lost 233 lbs naturally, I know not everyone can do it that way, and they need medical intervention, but that's the way I wanted to go. It can be done if done right, but you have to want to do it. It has to be sustainable. This is for the rest of your life.

In the 2022 I was in America. what I saw was that the average foodshop don't have good vegetables, neither a good variaty. Every time I ate junk food there was only a symbolic portion of veggies on it. Eating plenty of veg and less carbs makes a big difference

Fast food is killing us slowly. I cook at home more, I do it for my family. Thank God for UA-cam and all the people sharing their cooking knowledge.
Cooking is very simple unless you make it difficult. It does not have to be so diverse, only healthy. Breakfast: 5 eggs and 5 sausage. Lunch: plain yogurt. Dinner: fried ground meat in lard or butter, add some cut up vegetables, a potato that's been cooked a few days ago, or some boiled rice, brown a bit and serve! For snack 2 pieces of fresh fruit. That's what we eat daily.
It's cheaper than anything you can buy in fast food joints, low carb, and much more nutritious.

When I was 10 my parents and I moved to the US from Israel. I was a normal weight child. Within 2 years of living in the Midwest, eating most of my meals at home and at school (yeah, school cafeteria, I’m looking at you), and only occasionally going out for fast food, I became overweight. Thank God we moved back at that point or else I don’t know how far it would have gotten.
It definitely depends on where you are in America. Certain parts of the country are definitely more overweight than others. The Midwest and the South are way more overweight and obese compared to say the Pacific Northwest.

I had been fit all my life until I had a serious injury at the age of 43. I became severely obese within two years. I can't imagine people can live like that and claim they feel wonderful. Obesity is disability and there is a reason why those influencers are not older than 40. You can stay quite healthy and fat if you are young, but above the age of 40, it's essentially a death sentence.
Be grateful also that the UK still follows the excellent ( and high ) EU rules on food safety. However, some maniac Brexiteers still want us to lower the standards to allow in hormone-drenched meat from Australia and New Zealand, where food standards are lower.
American standards are even lower than that, and chlorine-washed chicken is just one example. Heinz sells tomato paste in the UK and the USA. The cans look the same but look at the listed ingredients: the USA version reads like the contents of a chemistry lab.

A big reason why the US has this issue moreso than countries in Europe are related to the foods we ingest. Many of the ingredients are so unhealthy they're illegal in Europe. It's better to minimize all processed foods and buy locally when possible. Cooking at home is key since many restaurants use pre-processed food as well. It's cheaper, too.
Avoiding grains has helped me a lot. People can learn more by reading/listening to the Wheat Belly books or watching associated videos here on UA-cam.
Healthy weight loss isn't something that can be done through willpower or starvation. While limiting oneself to a vegetarian or carnivore diet can help some people, it's also dangerous for some people. Everyone's dietary needs are different, and consulting a dietician can really help with feeling better and improving your gut microbiota.

I went low carb in Oct 2021 after being diagnosed with diabetes; remitted successfully. Once I reduced the carbs the cravings also reduced. Without even trying I lost weight; I can only do stretching, strengthening and light hand weights due to back and knee issues. I now weigh what I did back in the mid 1980s before having children. Went from 80kg down to 60kg. Waist was 44" and it's now 36". Other than shoes and socks I have to get a whole new wardrobe of clothes. Thankfully I've been able to get a lot of my tops / blouses from the second hand shop.
Well that is just remarkable. Shows it can be done if you want it bad enough.

The doctor wanted to put me on metformin, a statin and see a dietician (which I did - a hospital diabetes dietician in Australia - and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs and that I would lose muscle; I proved her wrong - I got checked by a exercise physiologist after 1 year). For me it was learning that you can go blind and/or end up on kidney dialysis (I already knew you could lose toes / limbs). My husband ended up on peritoneal dialysis after he contracted Wegeners Granulomatosis. We checked out about both types of dialysis and he decided on PD. Both forms of dialysis impact your life in a big way.

@@davisholman8149 Thank you. You do need to have a strong motivation to do it. After being diagnosed with diabetes I learned that you can go blind and/or end up on dialysis. That scared me into trying low carb (after watching lots of videos and reading viewer comments about how it had worked for them). The diet didn't seem "wrong". I've now been low carb for over 2.5 years because I feel so much better on it than eating the way I had been. After a few weeks I stopped craving the carbs.
also had 20 kg to loose. managed to loose 10 kg with low carb diet and now am stuck with those 12 kg. cant excercise bc of knee and auto immune disease and am about to start some calistenia routine and see if can start loosing some more kg.
I have a family photo taken on the family farm in 1906.
This was during a family reunion and there are over 30 people spanning 4 generations. The largest of them would be considered below average in weight today. The old guys have arms and necks that are chiseled out of wood.
They didn’t have remote controls, central air or internal combustion engines to carry them around. They WORKED. And they ate at home.
Today I weigh 150 lbs, 5'6 tall. I lost 45 lbs within two years. I removed flour and sugar from my diet and I eat only two meals a day. Breakfast at 7 am and dinner at 2 pm. It was enough. I have an insulin resistance.

Depends entirely on who you compare against. Most cities in China tend towards eating at restaurants and street vendors. Hold over from Mao's cultural revolution where centralizing agriculture and optimizing work productivity from the population led to discouraging home cooking (right up to melting down most pots and pans for worthless 'steel' to give people no choice) and encouraging more time, ingredient, and distributionally efficient food access through restaurants. It continues in part from momentum and in part from the 6 days of 12 hours workweek (plus some work from home for white collars) leaving little time to cook after commuting.

To some extend it's a cultural/habitual thing. I often see kids getting chicken and chips for £5-6/portion after school, rather than having a fresh meal cooked for the same money OR sometimes they eat it as a pre-dinner/unnecessarily extra meal. Often, moms who claim they can't afford healthy food don't miss a manicure or hair appointment. Get the priorities right. Get cooking. Eat less. Move.

indeed! I'v got a McDonald's at a 5 min distance from my apartment, yet I think I can count on one hand the amount of times I've visited it over the past 3-4 years. Stop complaining about fast food restaurants when you can go also just COOK.
They're not victims. They're tied to the ease/convenience of fast food. I started going to the gym 4 - 6 times a week and staying away from fast food. It's definitely harder/ time-consuming to cook healthy. I've lost 20 lbs over the last 4 months, which isn't easy because even products that say they're healthy aren't truly healthy.

i never eat fast food. Ate it as a kid, then when i became an adult, never occured to me i should eat hamburgers or pizzas (yes, i don't even eat pizza). I substitute that with whole fried potatoes or frozen fruits if i have the urge to munch. But of course my main meals are different kinds of soups and a shitload of fish and salads.
Addiction is a very real thing that a massive percentage of humans currently struggle with. Whether it's food, alcohol, drugs, sex, social media etc., what can start out as innocuous pleasures can slowly (or quickly) become a problem. When certain chemical pathways develop in your brain, it's a huge undertaking to re-establish healthier habits.
I really dislike this mindset of 'lack of self control'. As animals, we want to feel good, and we want high calorie food. Clearly what has happened in the US is a societal problem and solely blaming the individual for their moral failings is pretty lame. I'm not saying the individual isn't responsible, but the greatly society and culture strongly factors into all this. Wildly overprescribe opiates? You get people addicted to opiates. Apps designed to constantly feed us videos? You get people who spend hours everyday doom scrolling. Create a culture based on driving, consumerism, both parents working and heavily advertised fast food? Of course you're going to get people addicted to food.
I didn’t let surgery be my only option. I fasted and ate super healthy cutting carbs and added sugars from my diet. I lost over 100lbs in just a year. Yeah, most people don't stop to consider that they're metabolically unhealthy, and it's gonna take time for their body to start functioning correctly, especially if they're diabetic and their body just stores fat and doesn't hardly use it. You can loose weight quickly on keto, but early weight loss is mostly water weight. Further, if you don't have enough protein, you may loose muscle mass while keeping much of the fat. Once you've alleviated the burden on your insulin for a long enough period of time, you'll start shedding the fat rather than storing it.

I am German and visited a small town at the Five Finger lakes some years ago. I usually eat healthy but I literally had no options there. There was a Wendy‘s, a Taco Bell, Burger King, McDonald‘s and a Starbucks. I did not see one damn supermarket. I was walking and had no car. Fast Food was all around..no supermarket in walking distance. There were some restaurants in the city center but even there: mostly unhealthy options. I then ordered a salad and sweet potatoe fries. The salad came with a high calorie dressing, the fries were covered with some super sweet brownish sauce almost like caramel. And this meal was more expensive than Fast Food. It‘s not just the people‘s fault in my opinion. The state does not do enough to make healthy food available. We are responsible yes, but what do I do as a average or low income person when Coca Cola is cheaper than water? When Wendy‘s is next door and veggies are more expensive than a hot dog? Don‘t blame everything on people. In Israel you have vegetarian and vegan fresh food the second you step out of your door. Did not see one McDonald‘s in Tel Aviv. Guess it‘s hidden sonewhere in a shopping center.

Additionally, for a low income family they are much more likely to spend their money on the dollar menu buying $1 cheeseburgers vs a grocery store where an avocado is $2-3 per. Our food stamp programs also supports poor and cheap diet options. So again, why would a low income person spend all their food stamps on a handful of fruits and veggies when they can buy carts full of sugary cereals, ramen noodles, and other processed foods?

There may be numerous fast food places in town, but there’s also a grocery store with meats, veggies and fruit! Teach yourself a little bit about nutrition, portion size and healthier cooking. I didn’t give up my favorite foods I limited them drastically.
I did that and started walking and lost 150lbs!! It can be done and it’s our own responsibility! I will never look like a model and that’s ok. I don’t have high cholesterol, heart disease or diabetes.

There is nothing wrong with junk food itself. Look at the Netherlands - Dutch people eat a lot of bread, cheese and fries - and they are still very skinny. If you move and have healthy approach to food, you can eat whatever you want.

@@NitzpitzYeah but they've got microwave in bag frozen veggies that are cheap, and it doesn't take a culinary genius to throw in a tablespoon of olive oil and powdered seasonings like salt, pepper, garlic powder, Italian herbs, etc. to make it taste good, have with baked chicken cutlets lightly coated in oil (I use oil or butter spray and garlic powder instead of peeling garlic because I'm lazy af), 1 serving of pasta, 1 serving pasta sauce, 1 Oz cheese, measured on a $10 digital food scale with an auto tare function, at least half the plate being veg. There are other improvised lazy quick easy healthy meals.
The point is that even lazy healthy chicken and veg doesn't have to be tasteless boring garbage. There are thousands upon thousands of simple video recipes if you don't want to read through elaborate recipes with exotic ingredients. Microwave potato with Greek yogurt, bacon bits, 1 Oz cheese, 3 Oz baked chicken or 1 serving canned chili, and a bit pile of roasted or sauteed or flavors steam in bag veggies is another good quick, easy, cheap healthy, tasty meals. And you can still have burgers, just skip the fries and soda.
I have disabilities limiting my ability to stand a long time sautéing or chopping things, and yeah it's harder when you're limited and in pain, but there are workarounds. Not everyone finds the workarounds quickly, but I have no time for defeatist attitudes that none of it is in your control. I didn't know about practical methods for healthy eating until the Internet went big, I was overweight until I moved out and chose my own food based on that info. Seek out the information and keep trying.

I’m from a small country in the Caribbean. Since second grade mandatory you receive cooking classes. Back when buying grocery store box bread was seemed as expensive, I had to help my mom bake the baguette and cookies for my school week snacks. Now I relocated because of work and I still bake most of my stuff at home. Yes in the USA I can feel everything is sooo easy to acquired and accessible. The amount of processed American food on the shop shelves here is astonishing, and I am always surprised that no one seems to read the contents labels. If they did, they would see an enormous number of chemicals and additives. There is also a growing obesity problem here, mainly due to junk food ( KFC is always packed out ) lack of exercise, and too much drinking.
Kudos to Barbados ( not where I live ) for having the courage to impose a sugar tax on unhealthy processed drinks and foods.

I went to visit my sister a few months ago in Houston. From the airport to her house, we must have passed by at LEAST 300 fast food restaurants, trucks, and stands. 5 Chick Fila's, 9 McDonald's, 7 Burger Kings and God knows what else all within a 5 mile drive from each other. And all this across local restaurants that serve amazing food that tastes better than the chains, and with better prices. Sidewalks cut off without warning, cars going 70 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone. The public transportation seemed scarce. God bless those people, I can't say I was shocked at the number of morbidly obese people I saw. I came home wanting to loose my own excess fat. Since that visit I've since lost 15 lbs and I hope to lose 15 more before 2025. It's hard but not impossible. Maintaining my current weight of 190 takes more effort than it would to just not eat excessively.
