10,000 *largely unvetted* food additives and nobody bats an eye. Then someone suggests restricting the [insert UPF food name here] and suddenly they're evil incarnate.
Someone really said "I don't want to do the paperwork for basic ingredients" a few decades ago, and now they don't have to do the paperwork for the crazy stuff that actually needs the paperwork. They took the easy way out.

Nope. This is common knowledge. America has some of the healthiest food options compared to the rest of the world. So consuming chemicals is down to a personal CHOICE, not due to any lack of information.
Most people outside of the US don't even have options like pasture raised heirloom breed meats and non-dairy additive-free yogurts.

I lived in Spain 2020-2021. I lost about 40 pounds. I had to cook most meals and took up Spanish cooking. It helped that there were no fast-food restaurants where I lived. I'd have to take a bus and a train to get to a bigger town. Also, I only had to work a fraction of the hours that I worked in the US, so I would walk along the coast and through the National Park daily.

@@mimzy54321 “Healthy” isn’t a very useful word. No foods are healthy or unhealthy on their own. A more meaningful statement would be something like “Cheetos aren’t very _nutritious_ relative to the number of calories.” Cheetos are fine to eat. You probably shouldn’t eat a lot of them, but that’s because you would be consuming a lot of calories for little nutritional value, not because some ingredient in Cheetos are negatively impacting your health.

  • @SuitedPup

I genuinely believe this is the single most important issue faced by America today, bar none. There is nothing more crucial, individually and collectively, than a person's health - both mental and physical. The food we ingest into our bodies is the primary driver of our health or lack thereof. Think about it: we're literally taking physical matter and putting it inside ourselves. Getting this right is absolutely critical.
Why is this THE most important issue? Consider these points:
    1. The astronomical costs of chronic diseases linked to poor diet are crippling our healthcare system and economy. We spend far more on chronic disease treatment/management than we do on war.
    2. Our quality of life and longevity are directly tied to what we eat. Health is intrinsically important. Without good health, nothing else matters.
    3. Mental health, cognitive function, and even societal behavior are influenced by nutrition. Productivity, criminality, living harmoniously with others: all these things are influenced by our mental health, which we are more and more finding is tied to what food we eat.
    4. A healthy population is more productive, creative, and capable of tackling other pressing issues.
At a personal level, we should all strive to make the best dietary choices possible. But this isn't just about individual responsibility. As a society, we cannot stand idly by while corporate greed and corruption continue to profit from our sickness, addiction, and ignorance. We need to take action:
    1. Ban all marketing of ultra-processed food products directed at children. Full stop. I’d go further with banning commercials on tv - like cigarettes - but that’s not gonna happen anytime soon.
    2. Implement stark warning labels on ultra-processed foods, similar to cigarette packs, stating they're known to lead to adverse health outcomes and can potentially be addictive.
    3. Launch massive public education campaigns about the dangers of ultra-processed foods and the benefits of whole foods.
    4. Incentivize the production and accessibility of healthier food options, and disincentivize the production of junk food by implementing stricter regulations, more aligned with other developed countries.
The food we eat shapes every aspect of our lives and our nation's future. It's time we treat this issue with the urgency it deserves and take bold steps to reclaim our health from the jaws of the ultra-processed food industry.
Denormalize the ubiquity of ultraprocessed foods in our life and culture. We need to shift our cultural attitude towards ultra-processed foods. Just as saying "I could go for a cigarette" now often elicits concern rather than encouragement, we should react similarly to casual mentions of fast food cravings. Instead of laughing or agreeing when someone says "I could go for some Taco Bell," we should recognize this as a potentially harmful impulse.

I would caution on the "warning labels on everything" initiative. Case in point: California's Proposition 65. When everything has a cancer warning on it, the public stops paying attention to it, and companies start slapping the label on everything so they can't be sued for *not* having it on a product that should have required it.

You look at the choices up and down the isles, and it all comes from the same 4 companies that make them. And now you have places like Kroger merging with Albertsons, and the same companies controlling the food, being in charge of making it horrible for your health, getting you addicted to it, and then raise the products not effected by supply chain issues just to make record profits.

Unfortunately politics and food are tied together. During the pandemic DJT laid off 30,000 FDA employees..including scientists who are in charge of food safety. Lobbyists for processed foods contribute to politicians..Republicans like DT and "corporate Dems like Joe Manchin", bribing them to turn the other way as companies like Conagra make record profits but continue to raise prices on their processed crud; mergers of supermarket chains selling foods like Tyson whose chickens have had issues or Boars Head which has been in the news for selling tainted meat products. You have to be aware of which politicians' campaigns are greased by these greedy food companies and vote accordingly.

They think people who eat healthy don't like the taste of their food or can't be excited about it?
They seem to not be aware that junk food is an acquired taste. That your taste reception literally changes to accommodate your diet. When you eat less salty food your taste buds adapt and find the less salty stuff just as good. They've adapted their taste away from normal food and think normal food isn't normal tasting anymore (amd of course taste for them trumps all other factors).

The only person in this video that mentioned "FAST FOOD" RESTAURANTS IS Crystal. She said that was her diet. She said she cut back on fast food a month prior to the interview. She died a few days later from a blod clot and hypertension.
Here's the problem - you talk all about "ultra-processed" food, yet ONLY focus on what Americans get from the grocery store. These days, the majority of food that people, such as Crystal, get in their diet comes from FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS - take out, drive-thru and Door Dash-type delivery. ALL FOOD FROM FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS IS ULTRA PROCESSED, with the HIGHEST LEVELS of known bad chemicals and ingredients.
Yet, somehow, the producers of this video LEAVE OUT FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS COMPLETELY!
    🤫
    I wonder why?

    • @Aaron.Thomas

Wow, really sad to know that Crystal passed. We don't know, but potentially if she had started the same diet with her daughter she could still be here. I love processed foods, but my body seems to know moderation and I know that its a result of my mother instilling in me the value of balance. Growing up, everyday I pretty much had a home cooked meal and it consisted of protein, vegetables, with rice or root vegetable such as yams, sweet potatoes. Not to mention the amount of fruits I was surrounded by in the Caribbean: mangoes, guineps, Apples, bananas, sugar cane, wild raspberries, naseberries, tamerinds. We did have fast food like KFC and later on even Burger King. But those were once in a while treats, like maybe at the end of the month or on a Friday night. Sometimes, it would be a two piece chicken combo shared between 5 people. Recently I had a delicious bacon cheese burger with fries and a coke at a food court. Seriously, it was super good, but by the time I finished it, my body was telling me, ok, you don't need to have this for a while. So, the key is, moderate your kids accessed to these processed foods a young age.

They even use scientific methods to make their food so irresistible that you can’t stop eating it. PepsiCo doesn’t have any reason to want to sell less.

We're outliers because we don't like or buy processed foods and most people are surprised to see that my kids don't bat an eye at kale salads and "adult food". It's a huge culture problem, because honestly it costs less to buy raw ingredients in bulk, even organic ones, than the processed stuff. People are just no aware of it or have no idea since they were never exposed to food outside the US. Even schools in France have homemade food cooked and prepared on site. Here I have to make my kid's lunches or they would eat fast food every day for lunch. Not only is it bad for them, but it costs more per student as well.

If the food supply gets better and people start eating more healthy foods, then the need for pharmaceuticals will decrease. Keeping us hooked on unhealthy food generates profits for the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals...as well as gymnasiums, the diet industry, and even the clothing industry as people's clothing size fluctuates when they try to lose weight. What's shocking is how different the food is in say, Canada or the EU vs the U.S., many ingredients and additives that are common here are outlawed in other countries. When we bought our own groceries, the price tag was also noticeable higher, almost as if being normal food is treated as a luxury commodity.

The food industry gives you less but you pay more. They should take out high sodium and take out the sugar. If not, they should be prosecuted. FDA should be more active in ingredients in foods. Because companies
are getting richer and the people are getting sicker.

There is so much truth to this!!!!!! Was on Prednisone long term in the early 80’s for asthma. Doctor told my mother I would be very hungry, do not stop him from eating just make sure as much of it as possible is home made. Meals from scratch, hamburgers that were just burger and no added seasoning etc, chocolate chip cookies, etc. Food was either eaten in season from the garden, or preserved with traditional procedures (Freezing, canning). Grew up on a family dairy farm so always outside running around working, shoveling manure, playing in the dirt pile etc. Currently take medicines and thank my mother every day for the delicious meals she prepared for us growing up and instilling in us the benefits of consuming a healthy diet!!!!!

Managed a grocery store for over 10 years and was amazed what people could buy with SNAP. Donuts, cookies, chips, soda and chocolate milk were the most purchased items with SNAP in my store. Around the holidays they would buy lobster and crab legs but had to remind them that if we steam it then its prepared food which is taxed and not eligible for SNAP. Most couldn't understand that and argued with me!

I've been looking after my 81-year-old mom for thirty years, taking her to the doctor at least four times a month, and she was on 13 pills a day. After switching her diet to healthier options with fresh and whole foods and cutting out 95% of ultra-processed foods, I saw a huge change. Now, she visits the doctor just once every six months and is down to 3 pills. She's healthier than she was decades ago. After seeing this transformation, I decided to dive into the healthy foods business, starting with pure, unrefined Palmyra palm sugar since sugar is a big issue. Palmyra palm sugar is made from the flower sap of the Palmyra palm tree and doesn't go through much processing. It's got a low glycemic index and keeps all its nutrients.

Thing is, if you know how to shop and cook, you can eat healthily and tastily on a small budget.. Peasants have always eaten whole grains, root veg, legumes and veg like cabbage. The legumes are the main thing for protein, and you can make a black bean burger that tastes way better than a McRubbish burger for about a quarter of the price. There are heaps of frugal-cooking websites. A good British one is Eat Well for Less. Great tips and recipes.

I love the poor guy in this film demonstrating ultra processed plant based milk with tons of sugar. He is obese, then of course they list the health impacts, obesity, etc. Sadly. Fortunately, I have never eaten any of this crap, nor will I. Now there might be other reasons why this man was overweight, and I did not say to to put him down in any way. I am just making a point as an example. But honestly ultra processed, even like cheetos or potato chips, etc. that are spicy that taste amazing are very dangerous for our health. As an epidemiologist, when these companies suggest that there is no causality of health effects. In that, there are other contributors. True. However, there have been so many cases where those who were consuming ultra processed foods regularly, once they stopped and ate fresh vegetables and improved their nutrition with real food they suddenly became healthier, had more energy, slept better, and reduced stress.
