  • Best trick play I've seen in awhile. Shortest onside punt ever. This was better than O'Shea's sleeper receiver play some years back, in my opinion.

    I love the CFL. Strange rules like this in the CFL are in part due to Gridiron Football evolution out of Rugby Union Football. I do not like that the CFL moved the hash marks closer.

    If it’s a problem, make it so you still have to get the ball past the marker for a first down instead of automatically.
    I kind of like it this way, though. Otherwise, in long-yardage situations, defenses just play deep. This forces them to actually play.

      Because you always want to remind the opponents of the threat of it. That's really what it's about -- making them play you close to the line of scrimmage instead of laying back. I don't like it; why shouldn't the defense get a break after putting you into a long yardage situation?

    Did a bigger reply on Facebook that I'll post here too:
    Hence why Montreal won the Grey Cup this year (did this play at least twice) :)
    It is an odd play but it works (as most unique Canadian Football rules go, and I wish it was more so especially away from its American counterpart and more like Aussie Rules/Rugby footy, especially Rugby League over Union)
    Heck being Montreal is still far on there side of the field, I bet this new set of downs ran out that by the 3rd down, they just punted the ball away as you always see in the sport.
    So unique plays like this are worth it as something different than the same stuff over and over yes? Nuff said

    I wouldn't say it's a beautiful part of the game, rather an ugly one that I've been aware of for many decades. The only way to prevent a cheap first down is to cover everyone close to the line of scrimmage. It would be better if another criterion were instituted for interrupting the continuity of downs, one that couldn't be satisfied by a tap kick like this.
    I suppose it's a good rule if you don't want to reward the defense by letting them play "prevent" to take advantage of a long yardage situation they've put the offense in.

      I'm starting to have mixed feelings about this. I can see the point about this play keeping defences honest, so on third and long, they can't just drop everyone back 10-15 yards. But at the same time, it doesn't seem like a very sporting play. Either way, I'm still going to be a CFL fan. You don't have to love everything about the game to be a fan. I still prefer the 5min halves for overtime (although I would prefer a tie at the end of non-playoff games, including in the NHL). But at the same time, I understand that TV stations aren't a fan of 5min halves.

      @@gridiron2022 There's plenty of things I wish the NFL didn't do. But I will say that when loopholes like this come up, the NFL closes them. For example, the intentional fumble or so called "Fumblerooski", where the QB would intentionally drop the ball and try to confuse the D while another player stealthily picked it up and ran with it. It was contrary to the nature of sportsmanship, so the NFL prohibited it.

  • @my3dviews
    @my3dviews 7 місяців тому +1

    I didn't know you could do that. Thought that it would have to go ten yards. I'm guessing that almost no one knows this rule or we would have seen it done before. If you are second and 20 due to a sack on first down, that would be a good time to do this, to reset the downs without getting 20 yards.
    Of course if this happened to often, the league would modify the rule that it would either have to go ten yards or have to go far enough to get a first down. Which would probably be a good thing.

    • @goodmaro
      @goodmaro 7 місяців тому

      Oh, no, people have known about it before. I pointed it out about 40 years ago in a letter to CAFA (now Football Canada) as a loophole someone could take advantage of. He wrote back that it was already done in a game a season or two before that. At one time the rule read that continuity of downs was reset by the offense's kicking the ball so as to give the other team fair and equal opportunity to recover the ball, which seemed to have left it a judgement call, but then that language was taken out -- a good change in my opinion -- but unfortunately replaced by just requiring the kick to cross the line of scrimmage.

    • @gridiron2022
      @gridiron2022  8 місяців тому +2

      No. They don't have onside punts at all. If the punting team recovers the ball, the play ends, but the ball remains in possession of the receiving team. This was discussed here earlier. Thanks to the guys who commented.
      (In the NFL, I still don't understand what makes a kickoff "onside". That the ball goes 10 yards? When does a team ever try to kick less than 10 yards?)

      NFL sucks

    • @DougsShack
      @DougsShack 7 місяців тому +1

      @@gridiron2022 I can help answer this.
      In American Football, once a punt has traveled past the line of scrimmage, only the receiving team can recover it. If the kicking team touches it first, it is called a "first touch violation" - basically a foul with no punishment. If the punt is blocked, kicked oddly, or just doesn't travel past the line of scrimmage, either team may recover and run with the ball.
      For free kicks (Kickoff, safety free kick, fair catch kick) in the NFL, the term "onside kick" is a bit of a misnomer. All free kicks will be onside because it is a foul to be offside during the kick. The "onside kick" is just an attempt at a short kick that travels the necessary 10 yards and sets up the kicking team to recover. Typically the kicker will kick the ball in such a way as it hits the ground and bounces high. Once the ball touches the ground, the receiving team is unable to call for a fair catch.

    • @goodmaro
      @goodmaro 7 місяців тому +3

      The onside kick was taken out of American football exactly a century ago. But even then, you couldn't get a cheap first down with a tap kick like this. The rule that American and Canadian fotball shared was that continuity of downs was interrupted when it was kicked so as to give the opposing team "fair and equal chance" at the ball. Canadian football eventually replaced that with the requirement that the ball be kicked across the line of scrimmage.
      Oh, and for the record...the rule on the kick's interrupting the continuity of downs was copied verbatim into Canadian football from American rules. It was American rules that instituted the series of downs, after all. 3 of them. American rules added a 4th down in 1912.

      As a one-off, I think this is great because it's outsmarting the rules. In forty years of watching the CFL, I don't think I've seen this even attempted until this year. But I do hope that the rule is amended so the ball has to go ten yards before it can be recovered, like with kickoffs. In general, I do like the onside punt rule, though.
      You shouldn't feel sad for Canadian football. It's a more exciting game than NFL rules. Unfortunately, the salary differences make the majority of the talent go to the NFL, but I think the game itself is better.
