Good, quick summary and there are many more, less obvious differences. I.e. The neutral zone is 1 yard vs. length of football in US. Receiver needs One foot inbounds for receptions. As for pre-snap motions - as backfielders the ends (Wide Recievers) can 'waggle' along the line. The clock rules change just before end of halves (similar to US) but at 3 minute warning. With 3 downs and 3 minute clock rules - a LOT of scoring can happen to change the outcome of a game right down to the finish. It's very hard to 'run out the clock.' Thanks for posting. (btw metric came later. field was always in yards - based on old rugby fields.)

Important points, especially the one about the neutral zone. Just to clarify a small point, though -- it's impossible to run out the clock. The game has to end on a play.

Great rundown of the rules of the CFL, Jukes. I'm glad you enjoy the CFL game

You can throw the ball away if the QB cannot find anyone to throw to or cannot run. He needs to make sure not to “ground” the ball.

Would've been good to hear what's happening when they keep kicking back and forth. What's going on with that?

Let’s say a game is tied with enough time for 1 play.
If a team kicks a ball into the endzone (and it is not a successful field goal) and it is downed in the endzone,
the kicking team gets 1 point.
The reason you see a team punt the ball out of their endzone is to prevent giving up that 1 point.
The reason the offence might punt back is to score that 1 point

    Metric? This found on Quora:
"Metric conversion of Canadian football was reviewed. After all, at 110 yards, the Canadian Footbal field is almost precisely 100 meters long. The problem was converting the downs as you suggested. After running the numbers ,they figured that trying to get 10 meters with three downs would be significantly more difficult. That would mean fewer first downs overall and more punting. The only way to fix this would have been to go to four downs, and that was just unacceptable. Next thing you know, they would be fair catching punts and not counting rouges!
It would also really make it difficult to make historic comparisons. As such, at both the professional and college level, everything is still done in yards."

Why not have a game between the CFL vs NFL Championship Teams Charity Bowl annually after both leagues have completed their season. One year it could be in one nation(their rules apply) and in the following year it could be held in the other nation(their rules apply) I think this would be very exciting to watch and would help to promote the sport even more!

The thing is... CFL ends their season in November, NFL ends their season in February... There's no way to make a Grey Cip winner vs SuperBowl winner game possible.

@teo_heel why not in early March? It could be set up in a manner similar to the Pro Bowl Games
I’d like an international agreement to construct a stadium that straddles the border, with midfield right on the boundary between the two countries. A lot of people are tired of one country invading another, but this kind of invasion is something a lot of us can get behind

Rules and player specialization to adapt to the differences is too great to easily adapt - along with all the seasonal 'fitness' issues vs. seasonal schedules etc. already mentioned. But - maybe a Flag Football competition just for fun? ...

I must correct you on the motion before the snap. Maximum of FOUR players can move before the snap. That's the correct way to explain it.

Every player except the 5 'down' linemen and the QB can be in motion. That means 6. Two WRs (along line of scrimmage) and 4 backfielders.

Also have to remember that the CFL has been around LONG before Canada went metric, so it didn't make a lot of sense to change something that had been working fine already. Heck, even nowadays, unless you're really young or you're from Quebec or have immigrated to Canada, chances are that you're familiar with imperial measures, so feet and yards aren't a huge problem to figure out. Heck, I generally have to convert to metric after the fact if I'm figuring out my weight since most of us still measure that in pounds, and I always think of myself as being 6 feet tall, not 183 cm, and this is coming from someone who's lived their entire life in Canada. In other facets of life, it's a mixture (outside temps are Celsius, but our ovens are usually Fahrenheit), food at stores is listed in both grams and ounces/pounds and we use imperial measures a lot for cooking. We usually use kilometres for longer distances, but converting to miles isn't a big problem.

Quebec uses Imperial/Metric the same way the rest of Canada does. They are French-speakers but have a North American mindset, not a European one. Quebec is not a slice of France in North America. They are North Americans who speak their own variation of French which is derived from 17th Century peasant French. They have evolved their own culture since France abandoned them centuries ago. Their accent actually has a lot in common with the Southern Drawl in the USA. These are quite interesting cultural/linguistic evolutions.

@@CanuckGodThe Mulroney government stopped the conversion to metric before it was complete, so some things, like real estate and clothes, are still officially measured in Imperial units (no subsequent government has thought it important to revive metrication -- the Canadian way).
