How Good is an Old CR-V Off-Road?

- While my Accord Euro is being fixed, I've been spending my days driving a number of different trade in's from work. While driving this old CR-V I had an idea to see how it goes at a local off road trail and it genuinely surprised me!

Had my CRV for 5 years now bought it with 85,000 on the clock and just about to push through 200,000 . She’s been up mountains through bogs and fords . In the sea racing the tide . Never let me down . Think it’s the best car I’ve ever had .

Haha, speed and power is not the answer, often, but it obviously was today, well done! We had a 2002 auto of this model, it was really good in the snow. Very reliable and we got a great price for it, selling privately. I got an Audi A3 to replace it, man was it junk, in comparison!

HAH yes, all those years of watching top gear rubbed off on me... and all good. If you just want a runner Honda got some good options, but we need more cars that jump into the performance car market like what acura has in the states...
Good that you showed the driver pov. Enjoyed it a lot. The overtaking part was the best for me hahaha. I am a fan of the 2nd and 1st gen crv though I don't own either. Do you prefer saloons over SUVs?
Yeah I'm definitely more of a sedan/coupe guy, but it was fun taking the crv out
I’ve taken ours everywhere including over Gunella Pass in Colorado in the Spring. It went absolutely everywhere my friend’s Jeep went. Sure footed in the CO snow as anything I’ve ever driven.

I like the shape of the old CRV. More rugged and jeepish, not the generic shape of the new ones.

I've owned a manual petrol mk2 CRV since 2006 and it drives today as well as it did when I bought it. Its never let me down and I'm never going to sell it.

i relocated a gen 2 facelift crv (5spd auto) from queenstown to auckland via the westcoast, i pushed the crv hard in the twisties and it was great fun. I drove for economy and managed high 6l/100km worked out on the fills.

Yep same engine but they have 5 speed auto rather than 4 speed

Yes, that was the last Model (2002-2006) that had it. And the spare tire on the tail gate..Some people say, that this model was the best ever of all CRV's.😎

You seemed very lucky to drive offroad.😎 The model 2 (2002-2006) that you were driving seems to be one of the best. And the iVTEC engine can last for a very long time. It is better than a new one with turbo..It's a HONDA. Made in Japan.

I had been driving my Accord on such roads. So I sold it and bought an old CRV. It handles my off road adventures pretty well. Mud, snow and rocks. And it was a bargain.
Yeah definitely, they're kinda like an off road accord in a way. Similar drivetrain but with more ground clearance

Useless test again. I could do al lof this with my corolla if it just had the clearance. Any vehicule would roll on some rock pebbles, it's just a matter of clearance... this is not really off road, it's a gravel road...

Buy a 2nd gen
Drove a first gen 2.0 manual on a beach and the bloody thing got stuck. 1st gear was so high (topped out at 40+km/h) that we couldn’t get enough power to (a) spin up the front wheels enough to trigger the viscous coupling and (b) if we did when the load of the rear drive came in it overloaded the clutch resulting in a lot smoke from the gearbox. Given that it was a press test vehicle there was a lot of tight clacka going on as the tide was coming up. Eventually we dug a path through the sand, did a u turn between waves and the driver shot off back to the ramp, 3km away. We walked back.
Oh dear HAHAH. Yeah they're not exactly outstanding off road but they can get around on gravel or dirt alright

What blows me away is that the BIG power turbo boys in the USA build AWD civics with modified versions of this AWD hardware. Gotta respect that.

How hard would it be to swap a K24A2/3 into a CRV.
Probably not that hard as all the mounts would be the same, you'd probably want to buy an accord as a donor car though
You’re talking 30HP between the A1 and A2? Better off having the A1 tuned with bolt ons to get that out of it

dont underestimate 2wd... they are capeable if u use them smart. This course is easily doable for higher street cars
