    You don't need to tighten the oil pump drive gear, it turns in the direction that tightens it. I always just snug it slightly. One thing I've noticed when rebuilding these engines is the timing chain tensioner tends to be worn out half the time, there's specs in the service manual to measure the rod. It works very similar to a hydraulic lifter in a car, if the rod is worn it won't pump up as well.
    Awesome video very thorough!

    • @brian.d.mobley
      @brian.d.mobley  3 роки тому +2

      Thank Forrest. Good insights! Thanks for sharing. The manual was no help regarding that oil pump drive gear so I tried to just tighten it up to about the same resistance that it gave me when removing it. And for some insurance, I added the LocTite. Thanks for the insight on the tensioner rod too!

    • @davelowets
      @davelowets Рік тому +1

      If there's dirt in the rod assembly, it wont pump up correctly either. If you press your finger on the rod with the cover off, and oil squirts out of the relief valve, you have a dirt issue. Remove and clean the assembly, and change your oil.

    • @brian.d.mobley

      HI Tom. I have dealt with that issue on these Honda OHV engines also. The most common reasons for this are an overly tight shift drum bolt. (You can access this fairly easily under the ignition cover on the left side of the motor), bent shift forks (harder to get to!) and the shift fork pins (even harder to get to!). The good news is; the overly tight shift drum bolt is the most common reason and the easiest to access and fix. Thanks for the kind words and for watching!

    What kit does tbolt sell that has the oil seals that go between the cylinder and trans And the cylinder to head? I've looked on their site and I'm not sure where to. Find them. You put them on at about 17:38 and 19:45. Also I have the 146 bbk and was wondering if the second seal you put on on the left side is necessary for my kit? It doesn't quite fit in the head gasket hole. The seals got crushed when I put the top end together and need to buy them separately but don't know the part number.

      Hey Jason! Id recommend contact TBoltUSA directly and ask them. They know much more about parts availability than I do. And I’m not familiar with the 146 you reference. Again, the guys at TBoltUSA would probably be a better source of knowledge. Sorry I am not able to help more than that. Thank you for watching!

    What’s easier putting a 4 speed or a manual clutch ? Thinking of putting a 4 speed to compliment my recently installed manual clutch but a little intimidated by the process ..

    • @brian.d.mobley
      @brian.d.mobley  3 роки тому

      Honestly, I kind of said that wrong in the video. What I should have said was “manual” not “4 speed,” but I didn’t want to have to re record that whole intro. But, manual is (I think) better than centrifugal. But 4sp doesn’t make much difference. The 1st gear on a four speed is just a granny gear and 4th is similar to 3rd on a 3sp in terms of gear reduction.

    Hey Brian loved the video I’m having an issue with my timing it’s either a tiny bit too high or a tiny bit too low even if I move it one tooth I already wrecked a set of valves because they were hitting the Wiesco forged piston I got for it which brings up the compression ratio by having a higher piston dome but it’s supposed to be compatible any chance you can give me some tips

    • @brian.d.mobley
      @brian.d.mobley  3 роки тому

      Hey Seth. Its funny. People seem to only ask me the craziest and hardest to answer questions!! This is one for sure. Logically, I cant think of why this would happen. But, a few reasons why it may are: Somehow the keyway in the ignition is not lining up with the woodruff key or the woodruff key is missing. Someone tinkered with the cam wheel and bored out the mounting holes resulting in misalignment. The flywheel you are using is not made for your motor. The cam chain is worn out. The guide sprocket or guide roller is worn out. The cam chain tensioner is stuck and is not providing adequate tension to keep the chain from jumping a tooth on the crank. The piston is installed upside down (COMMON!!!). The wrong thickness head gasket was used. Thats about all I can think of....

      @@brian.d.mobley thanks for the tips I’m gonna check my cam chain and get the right bolts for the cam sprocket i used different ones but I installed the piston with the arrow pointing to the bottom/exhaust valve and I went but how the service manual told me to set the timing which is the same way you did it the woodruff key is fine And so it the tensioner

      @@charlesdavidson7324 Editing is incredibly difficult. And, the more filming you do, the higher you tend to raise your expectations. Lighting and audio start to bug you if they aren’t perfect. On this engine video I probably have 60 hours of filming, script writing, editing and promotion. Its very hard to do it well and its never as good as you want. I recently made a 1:37 video showing the “After” of this bike build. That 1:37 clip took me 9 hours just to edit. The filming was probably another 3. I have a lot more respect for film makers nowadays!
