In-camera processing in Fuji is an overlooked benefit. As you see those SOOC results are highlight weighted remember you can always push a stop after the fact without having to run to your computer.
I also say this because it's easy getting caught up in selecting the right film sim before you go out shooting and missing shots fussing with it. Just switch to natural view (if you are using the EVF) and only worry about composition and exposure. Apply film sim after.

Finally a review in the way Fuji intended the X-Pro3 to be used. Really good video. The comparison to the photos taken on film makes it easy to see how the film simulations look. I have been shooting with the X-Pro3 now for over a year, and for me it‘s the perfect camera, I really love it so much.
Do you still have the camera or do you remember how you set up the OVF/EVF for a more analog experience? I‘m just curious to know. Thanks for this video.

One thing the Fuji has that is intended to let you bend the look of the film simulations to what you want to see, is a configuration of the in camera shadow highlight curve. The ability to change the amount of noise reduction, the ability to adjust clarity, and the ability to adjust the color tints. when a shoot black and white, specifically the Akros simulation, I change the shadow highlight curve to be +2 for shadow and +0 I’m highlights. It gives me just the right Amount of contrast that I am looking for.

Interesting comparison, Hashem. The xpro-3 has been marketed and designed well to appeal to film lovers, that's for sure. Definitely appears to be a community around film simulation recipes too which is interesting. I was always drawn to the film shots more than the digital in this video and I think it's for the reason you mention, the unexplainable innate character to film. Loved how the new place works as a changing backdrop and that you've started talking head shots in the street, that was cool to see. Shows just how far your confidence has come, well done, man. Looking forward to the next one.

Great video, glad I came across it! I think one of the most enjoyable things about Fujifilm cameras is how many adjustments you can do in-camera to get the look you want, I’m sure you’re familiar with Fuji-X-Weekly and their custom film recipes: well, I didn’t realise how rewarding it would be to make my own based on one of theirs. Truly a rewarding experience.

Thanks for the comprehensive and interesting test, Hashem. I've found the X-Pro cameras intriguing since the first one came out. Very interesting concept, and nicely executed, too... kudos to Fujifilm for doing something a bit different, and for keeping the experience of the photographer at the front of mind. I would love to shoot with one, and can see how it would make a great "daily carry", as you say, or travel or portrait camera. But I still can't quite see it working as my primary camera... in that role, versatility is king, so I'll stick with my α7iii. And of course a motley collection of old film cameras for the weekend 😃

Excellent comparison video! I've been shooting Leica M since 1968. Shooting with X-Pro and X-E Fujis is the closest I've come to the Leica shooting experience. I no longer have a B&W wet lab (I miss my Leitz Focomat enlargers) and have to send off film for developing/processing. The expense and trouble of shooting film makes it hard, especially when I can have such fun and get such good results from my Fuji cameras.
I often shoot with vintage Leitz, Nikkor and Canon lenses, plus I have bodies with all but the latest sensor/processor generations. There is a subtle but noticeable difference in the look of the images. You should consider picking up a nice used X-E2s. They are a lot cheaper than used X-Pro cameras and are a great size for street.

After getting a film Leica I quickly changed by X-T30 for a X-Pro3. The size is similar but the Fuji is lighter.
I originally planned to use my M mount lenses on the Fuji but the lack of OVF focus integration made it not as good as I expected. I find using Fuji native lenses and trusting the auto focus to be a better way. Focus distance limit is very helpful for street.
For manual focus I still prefer Leica rangefinder mechanism to focus peaking.
Overall I find the X-Pro3 the best digital companion to me due to its versatility.
The X-Pro3 also look just like the Fuji GW690III, even down to the film box insert.

Great video comparing the Xpro3 and film! At 5min43 you metionned that film was brighter because you had to shoot the digital to protect the highlights. I found I way to solve this with the DR400 option, it's really the closest you can get to simulate the latitude that film gives you with the highlights. But the downside you have to shoot at 640 iso minimum to achieve this, but when overexposing you don't get too much noise. I used to put the shadows up and highlights down in the settings too. The other downside is when you want to shoot wide open on a sunny day, you need to use ND's filters, but otherwise it's best way I found to mimic the film look from a FujiFilm camera. Thanks again for your amazing work on your video!

Excellent review. I did find all the film shots looked better than their digital equivalents. I pretty much only use the Astia preset on my Xpro3 - it gives the most ‘natural’ results. I initially was all excited for the Classic Neg but like you found the results inconsistent. It also behaves nothing like c41 film as it blows the highlights very easily!
As for the Xpro3 being the closest digital camera to a film experience? Well that obviously is a digital Leica M! Same form, minimal options, uses the same lenses, no crop factor after the M8.

Oh cool, I've been using Fujis for a few years but never actually did or watched a direct comparison with film before - looks like especially Classic Neg is a really close match to Superia, not to mention the near perfection of Acros. Well, my older Fujis don't have either, so I'm stuck with my go-to simulations ProNeg and Monochrome. What I learned from my X100 though is that the optical viewfinder is wasted on me, it's a nice to have feature, sure, but really only useful for street and nostalgia, and with interchangeable lenses and the ever-tighter crop in the optical viewfinder on anything from 50mm up I wouldn't really pay the 500€ extra and rather get a X-E4 instead. Still love the idea, I'm also a fan of the hidden screen and one little detail I'd almost be willing to upgrade for is the combined Iso/shutter speed dial.:)

I was originally wanting an X-E4 but someone actually comparing it with real film photos makes me want to get an X-Pro3 once they come back in stock. I’ll have to sell my little Olympus M5 III but I’ll be using the X-Pro3 in the same way I use my little Olympus. So if the x-pro3 can give me a similar shooting experience as when I shoot film then I can let go of my Olympus to fund the Fuji with a 23mm f/2.
Thanks for the amazing video! Loved that you used Fujifilm Superia 400 as it’s literally my favorite film stock because of how it makes the reds, blues, and greens look. I spent a couple of years making a Superia 400 film simulation preset in lightroom but it’s still not there yet. The fact that the Fuji will get me very close to simulating Fuji Superia 400 practically has me sold on it.
I’ll enjoy my Olympus for a while longer, then order the x-pro3 when it comes back in stock with a 23mm f/2. Cheers!

Amazing video. I bought my Xpro3 because in my country film it's very expensive. Using this camera with manual lenses is amazing.
I wouldn't compare this camera to a Leica, for me the Xpro3 enters in the realm of Leica alternatives like the Konica Hexar RF and the Contax G2.

I shoot a lot of film and I do love my Xpro3. But I do shoot raw and just adjust from there, I don’t feel the need to use film simulations because it’s just not film, might as well embrace the difference IMO.

Any issues with the ribbon connector amongst owners here that seems to have started this Class Action Lawsuit in the US ? I was looking to buy an X Pro 3 rather than lug around my heavier/larger Canon 5d stuff , and tried one in a shop and liked it, but was concerned about the fault. Given the amount of time it’s been out I thought I’d see if they produce a version 4 , although again rumours suggest they may stop the series , which would be a great shame

The other camera which follows a similar philosophy as the X-Pro 3 is Olympus' Pen-F. I decided for the Olympus, first because of its lower price and - in my eyes - better looks, secondly, because one can customize the jpeg-output of that camera even more and better than it can be done with the Fuji. The X-Pro 3 definitely has its advantages compared to the Pen-F (e.g. the viewfinder or high-iso capabilities), but those features weren't enough to push me over to Fuji.

I have wanted one of these for a while, but they aren't cheap even used. I have just started getting into street photography now that it has opened up in the states and I typically shoot with an M5, Minolta XD-11, 7sII, and sometimes Nikon f100 and minolta AF2 when I want that 80s/90s flash look. Mostly the M5 is my companion and that being said, it is challenging shooting street with film, on a fully manual camera with a RF patch. But, it is very rewarding when you get shots you are happy with and get in tune with your camera and your choice of film. Although I love the Xpro, neither it nor other digital camera can capture the whole analog experience and if that film look and manual focusing is what you want to experience and get good at, then you have to pick up a film camera and put the work in. At the end, it really isn't work, it's what makes shooting film fun.

    • @chrissoclone
      @chrissoclone 3 роки тому

You're absolutely right, it can't replace film experience, however close they're trying to get. What really drove me to Fuji is the controls though, switching between my film cameras and Fujis is flawless and I don't have to relearn the controls every time. The film sims, for me, are simply nice-looking, have a unique character and are a good base to work from in LR, but I don't try to actually fool myself into believing the photo was taken on film, that's what the original is for.

    • @pushingfilm

It seems like to me that, shooting street in manual with a range finder, would be faster if you park and wait for people to enter the preferred scene or zone focus for more spontaneous scenes. I’d think you’d lose more shots trying to focus the patch.

    • @pushingfilm
      @pushingfilm  3 роки тому +1

@@segzeeman7356 Agreed, definitely faster if you shoot that way! And one of the reasons I wanted to test zone focusing with the same lenses adapted to the X-Pro3... but besides the crop factor, the focus scale was also affected- meaning it still wasn't quite as quick.

5:48 Please try the Dynamic Range settings (DR200 and DR400) on the digital Fuji. No need to manually underexpose like this. All metering compensates correctly and it does not mess up the film simulations.
There's no magic to it, it just shifts its dynamic range to use more of it for the highlights (like film does), but it's the first brand I saw that implements it well. My old Canon only had a single "highlight protection" option that always felt meh. Older Sonys straight up botched their "DRO" options, the metering did not compensate so it just overexposed the jpegs.
One thing to note is if you set the ISO manually you will see that the DR function is not active at the lowest ISO on the Fuji. That is because the sensor is at its lowest sensitivity it can go. You have to give it room to underexpose internally. You will see on the display when the DR kicks in as you set the ISO.

I did have a brief play with this feature while I was borrowing the camera for this video (I don't actually own one) It seemed that it was useful for shooting Jpeg, whereas in raw it's just going to apply a curve in post; as one would do manually when underexposing a digital image and bringing up the shadows. Please correct me if I'm wrong! ...but either way, it is a nice feature to have, and definitely better than equivalents by other manufacturers.

I really liked your take on the Xpro3, and the film sim comparison. I own an Xpro3 and it is by far one of the funnest cameras I own to just go out and shoot with.
For years I tried to find ways to edit my digital photos to try and give them a more “film” look to them but was never satisfied. So I went and bought a Nikon F2 and a couple vintage Nikkor lenses.
While I do enjoy using my Nikon F2, I can’t see myself shooting film as often, and I’m completely happy to use my Xpro3 instead.

You say in passing (at the 10-minute mark) that using the optical viewfinder in this camera eliminates shutter lag. I've never heard this before. If true, it's an important point. Are you sure? And what would be the reason for this? Has Fujifilm published an data about shutter-lag on the X-Pro-3? (Most reviewers give far too little attention to this issue.)
