In this video, I’m reviewing the Fujifilm X-Pro 3 after shooting with it for the last month and talking about why I think it provides a unique experience that’s similar to working with a film camera. I liked this one so much that I decided to buy the loaner that I was borrowing. It’s a fun one!

Seems like a camera made for us who were film shooters before digital came around. I absolutely love that “film” box tab on the back showing what type you’re using, what a great throwback!

Even tough it's supposed to be a "street photography" camera, I use the X-Pro3 for portraits and landscapes as well (even on a tripod and with longer lenses). I don't bother using the LCD for composing anyway because I would need my reading glasses for it. 🤓

I’m the same, can’t see shit. Arrrghh! I do wonder though whether using the lcd to compose disarms your subject in a portrait/ street photo scenario and allows you to catch people in more candid moments. Just a thought…

Ive used the Xpro2 for years, although Ive been tempted to “upgrade” to the 3 the Xpro2 does everything I want or need. For me, putting money into glass made more sense than a new body. My only real annoyance is that of battery life in the cold Canadian winters. But Im nit picking, there are work arounds. In the digital realm, its Fuji all the way for me.

    • @ChristopherCadlum
      @ChristopherCadlum Рік тому

Since we're likely (maybe) getting an xpro4 soon, what features will make you upgrade to the 4?

    • @tbostrowski6136
      @tbostrowski6136 Рік тому +9

@@ChristopherCadlum I don’t think features are an issue for me. More megapixels in cropped format do not interest me. More fps do not interest me nor do faster processors. The Xpro1 was a proof of concept to me and the Xpro2 delivered. Rather than buy a 3 or rumoured 4 take the money you would’ve spent on it and use it on travel with the camera you have. Having limitations on gear is a great way to exercise our craft and problem solve. Just look at the work by past masters. Having said that if I was to buy a “new” camera it would be a medium format. Just my two cents and doesn’t necessarily carry any weight. Enjoy what you have until you break it. 🤪😎

I've just picked one up myself! After buying (and selling) one a year or so ago, I went to the Leica M10, and didn't gel with it fully. I then went back to the X-Pro3 and I have to say I have a new-found appreciation for it, especially with the new Voigtlander X mount lenses. It's the most Leica-like experience but, and this is heresy to most, better! Being able to move the focus point and getting critical focus with the corner 'rangefinder' EVF patch in the OVF is so fun!

Recently got a Canon 5D Mk II after shooting film and mirrorless for a couple of years and I love having an OVF again in my digital camera (I have a split prism screen installed). It just changes the experience of framing a picture. Using old Nikkor non-AI glass on the Canon takes away the crispness of digital photos. Which I really enjoy from a creative perspective. I love using my Nikkor 28mm F2 non-ai lens and just use zone focussing. I can shoot old school style without the costs of developing film.
Although I can still chimp my photos, I found myself being limited with the continuous exposure preview of the photos I was taking. They were always perfectly exposed and I got bored with it.

I’ve recently fallen in love with the X-100V after 6 years of either film or my 5D mk3. I’ve basically just been shooting jpeg recipes in shutter priority after only shooting manually for years. The ease of shooting this way has me taking it everywhere which I’ve missed in a camera. I’ll definitely be trying the x-pro3 sometime soon. Cheers Kyle!🤘

The aesthetics and feel of a camera matters a great deal. I had a Sony A6600 and three prime lenses. It worked great and captured amazing images. I tried to tart up the looks of the camera with a nice leather strap and a ventilated hood. But it was still boring. So I sold everything and bought the X Pro 3 and a Fuji 35mm f2. Absolutely love it. Gorgeous, classic range finder, less chimping, awesome Acros bnw images, etc.

@@Amcacs5654 I did. It makes a big difference for sure. You lose the super crisp images in place of a more relaxed shooting style. With the Sony I felt that I had to do a bunch of prep, this is less of a chore. I find myself shooting less with this than I did with my Sony, however when I do shoot it's more meaningful because I have more focus on the scene than settings. Hope this helps.

Yeh I think this is a great and underrated camera. I have the XT4 and I don't mind using the EVF, I get my OVF fix from the Pentax K-1 and 645D. If I did not have that fix I think I would be pulled more towards a Xpro-3. Fuji need more respect for doing stuff like this, it's not easy for a company to risk for projects like this.

totally agree with the "experience" side of photography. I have had a Canon 5Diii then 1DXii then currently have a XT3 which like your XT4 use it mainly for video now and some stills. However, I've gotten back to slower shooting and slower subjects and out of that sports fast pace mindset as I was in with the 1DXii. I was shooting different subjects then anyways...
Since then I also have picked up a Canon EOS 1N film and an original 5D which actually broke but now replacing it with a 5Dii from MPB. And I really enjoy the techniques I have to use to track a subject, keep it in focus, focus and recompose manually adjusting things and even with the 1N film camera just trying new things and seeing what results I get.

I think it's cool that there are different cameras for different people, and love that you are clicking with the X-Pro 3. I've never understood the appeal of the X-Pro series as the main reason I love rangefinders is...well, the rangefinder, and I'd rather have shutter speed and f/stop on that back screen than what simulation I have selected. Otherwise an OVF that isn't a rangefinder or TTL doesn't do much for me. I guess that's why I bit the bullet on getting an M system. Overpriced? Maybe...The only digital rangefinder when i was looking? Yes.

First things first, I like your work!
I love the film experience but for various reasons I stopped using film cameras some twenty years ago. After then i used only DSLRs now I can’t even think about rangefinders. Fuji has great sensors but I don’t like their pricing… you only pay more or less for the extras! As for the photos themselves, you can edit any photo to look identical with film from any camera. I am doing it for years on my DSLR, just with the addition of a vintage lens (I am using a Planar 1.4/50) and careful color editing plus grain. The physical aspect though is subjective, and I can agree with you about XPro 3. It has a nice classic feel.
I want to share a tip also. An APSC camera maybe sound scary for medium format users but be aware that these crop cameras are very lens dependable, in my experience! A top quality prime can give a very similar to medium format look. I blind tested side by side photos from my apsc Canon with Zeiss (Planar and Otus) lenses and Medium format Fuji GFX 50s to few other people. Except from pixel level inspection, no one can tell the difference, not even me! The only real problem using digital vs film is the dynamic range towards the highlights… this is not replicable by CMOS sensors (and CCD are going extinct)…

You can get great Video. it has 4K options, but the the experience is not the greatest because of formfactor ( I think). You can have an external mic and use headphones. I typically set it and use it straight out of camera in a pinch. but for good video I use the X-T4

I have a chance to purchase this but one of the things that i love a lot about the x100v is the fact that its so compact and easy to have on you at all time (since thats what im aiming for) do you have any lens recommendations or other tips to keep it as compact as possible?

I had the X-pro 1 when it first came out (2012?). Great camera, but I subsequently switched back to film 100%. I’ve been tempted by the Leica Q2M, but the price is a big disincentive. I might take a look at the X-pro 3 tho. Can you program the EVF to display in b&w?

Yes. You need to do two things. Set "NATURAL LIVE VIEW" to OFF. This does: The effects of film simulation, white balance, and other settings can be previewed in the monitor. Second thing to do: Set a B/W film simulation in the camera. Done.

So I’ve been shooting a contax for years. But one roll of Kodak Portra costs 25 Euros now where I live and I just can’t keep taking pictures like that, especially when I have the added stress of running to special labs for same day development when I’m on a deadline. I bought the x-t20 a couple of years ago hoping to hold a foot in the digital door with analogue-ish controls but find myself bothered with the constant menu riding and distracting screen. The x-pro3 with the ovf and the closed display looks like an investment bound to happen for me.

Optical viewfinders cannot be beaten, digital will always have lag, and good rangefinders are the pinnacle of them, as seeing the actual moment of the photos capture without blackout makes a level of confidence and speed you cannot get, even training hard on any other system

  • @nathandault860

Picked up the X-Pro2 earlier this year (from MPB as a matter of fact). Now I'm trying to decide which to keep, it or the X100V. I can't rationalize having both -- well, I could if I tried -- and am still weighing the flexibility of the X-Pro2 versus the compactness of the X100V. (I'm keeping the X-T4 regardless of what I decide on those two. 😊)

The hidden screen is more protected than on other cameras which is also a nice advantage. But the main advantage in my opinion is for street photography. The tilt down screen lets you fire off shots at chest and even hip level, while looking like you’re just checking your settings. Particularly with the touch screen shutter release. This thing is a candid photography monster!

You nailed it: This camera is mainly about user experience, creativity and portability.
An asset you haven’t mentioned is the use of vintage glass on the XP. Besides the enhanced analogue experience the sensor can deliver very nice images with old lenses. I‘ve got very good results with minolta rokkor lenses. Nice side effect: They are fairly cheap.
I slightly disagree with the OVF experience. There is a lot of room for improvement (size & brightness). I miss the magnification of the XP2, definitely a downgrade. The EVF is very poor. The OVF should be THE differentiator and stand out but its still mediocre in this 3rd generation body.
The flip screen is great in my eyes. Very useful for waist level shooting otherwise just not existing. Perfect.

Funny you never take stills with the XT4? 🤔
I came from the X pro2, and after it broke I was going to buy X pro3. But after I saw the back screen there was no way. Since I do a lot of street photography, I need to make a lot of adjustments quickly and I need the screen available to do that. Plus I like to make sure that I got the shot as sometimes my camera settings slip or even had a film card stop working.
I certainly understand people’s way of thinking on this, but for me I need to make quick adjustments so I got the XT4 instead.
All I do is take stills, as I don’t do video. But I found I like this body even better than the pro2. Faster auto focus and built-in stabilization.
I’ve also have The X100V, and I plan on keeping it. 🖖

Had an X-Pro 3. Bought it to replace the Panda M6 I sold as my everyday carry. I love the idea of Fuji, but every time I own one, I wish it was an actual rangefinder experience.
It’s cool that they fit the bill aesthetically, but using them (X100T, X100F, X-pro2 & X-Pro 3), left me wanting.
Sold my X-Pro 3, bought a Zeiss Ikon ZM as my everyday carry and haven’t looked back.

I am watching your Video a second time here and still can not decide whether to purchase an X-Pro 3 2nd hand now or not .
Really -- if it were 400-500 bucks less than I would for sure go for it ! For me the OVF alone is a reason to get it !
I just feel not so comfortable with the EVF`s so far ( only experienced the Sony a7 IV and Nikon Z7 -- both okay -- Nikon better , but still it feels a bit artificial to me ).
Anyway - it is a bit tough to make this jump -- I´m invested in Nikon system ( and wanted to make the jump from DSLR`s to mirrorless, but as I mentioned -- the EVF`s just let me stay at the place I am so far ).
I will for sure stay with Nikon in the end , and the Fuji x-Pro 3 would always be a sideline , used with maybe 2 AF lenses and some added Leica M-mount lenses for manual shooting.
    Decisions...decisions ....

Fujifilm have lost their way a little with the size and cost of their newer lenses, and for $2000+ the X-Pro3 really should be performing at least on par with similarly priced full frame mirror less cameras.
May be if they can put a stacked APSC sensor in this and keep the price the same it’d be better value for what you get. Right now I feel that it’s way overpriced.
