  • There are plenty of motivational gurus out there who tell everyone to pursue their dreams and to not give up no matter what. But too many times these so-called gurus offer advice, which is rarely tested and only sounds good in a lecture, but does not work so well in practice. In this video I will tell you a story of how not only after managing to reach my dream job, I decided to quit it and later realized that it was the best decision I’ve ever made, but also how I even experienced being a self help guru myself until I witnessed the limitations of such a path.
Learn why winners quit all the time here: • How To Best Use Quitti...

You are kind of living your dream job - you are a guru, just not a spiritual one anymore, but who knows? Maybe this is what true spirituality is like.

Well you know, what's interesting is that I am loving what I am doing right now, but I wouldn't actually call it my "dream job" since I wasn't dreaming exactly about doing what I am doing now. This actually relates to a story I told in this video ua-cam.com/video/p6CQ0Saa3f8/v-deo.html where I share a story of how living out your dream may actually make you feel worse and that more happiness derives from doing things properly, instead of doing exactly what you've been dreaming of.
I dislike the word guru these (maybe my personal issue), but I guess you are kind of right, I am doing my best to share valuable information valuable information with others :) I'm still a long way from how I would want to be able to deliver this information, but it's a one step at a time journey :)

Great video. I had been following your channel since I had a dilema very similar to yours. I had trained Wushu and Tai Chi for more or less fifteen tears, I started at 20 years old, trying to find anwers to My life, even it became my job, but, for many reasons, I continue to feel empty and disappointed, and, here, in my country, Colombia, the sports, arts, culture, and education too, are not supported by the government, or any special organization neither, so my classes I have to charge very cheap, less from 3 dollars per class no more that one person at the same time, I know is not very efficient, but is the only way i can give private classes. This "ideal" job take me many time, energy and resourses, and even I had studied physical education to compensate, but, It didn't helped much to my finacial issues. Even I have been having frictions and misunderstandings with my Shifu because he did not need money for their living because he had another career, a very successful one, he was, until recently for the pandemy, a executive director in a Bank, so he never had the need for give classes, only but a few ones, and he started to give classes to foreign students, and charge us as he never did before, very expensive. He tried to help, but, i continued to feel empty, For all I had mentioned, and for the same issues you had with aikido. Even that I love Martial arts, I know that I can't live from give classes all my life, so I started, with my savings my second career, and something that I wanted long before, laws. And I going step by step, even that many people told me that i'm too old for a new career, or that I had wasted many time.
I had found your youtube channel, and feel identified with your experiences, particulary that tradicional Martial arts dont give you what supposedly they promise and the issues from "follow your dreams" stuff. And I started to train bjj and muay thai, and feeled...well,complete I can say, but for the pandemy all the nearby mma and bjj school became closed here in Bogota, and I stuck with the TMA, despite I love Martial arts and I want to continue to train, but not for my living but for my personal gain.
I want to do what you did to train in a specialized mma and bjj school, but, here in my country there is not such a place, and more less by the pandemy unfortunately, and I dont know where to start to search or who to comunicate outside the country to plan this when all the pandemy is over, and when I finish my real career. I would appreciate, if you, please, can show us some advices or a guide to contact your mma school and more important to who we must contact for programs no just gym memerships, i tried in Internet and all I finded was this, I feel like searching a needle in a haystack.
Thank you for your time, and for your great videos, and for your inpiration. My apologies for my orthography, I'm not a english native speaker.

There is so much to consider when attempting the dream job route. Yes, that can work. But only if you base it on realistic expectations and enough insight that you can know that you are not just running after some kind of fiction in your head but that what you expect in that dream job is actually what the dream job is like in real life.
In your case for example it couldn't work because your dream job itself was based on a myth, fiction and you were lied about it yourself.
But for example if your dream job is growing organic vegetables, there is no deceptive element there and if you are physically fit, physical work and the outdoors life is your thing and it's financially doable, it may be a great choice.

Looking back to that dream job... any tips for sitting seiza? Recently got back to martial arts (judo/jujutsu) after a 20 yr hiatus (not to mention adding ~50lbs of muscle)... and suwari waza is absolutely brutal for me. Like tolerable for 10 seconds max (when 30 min used to be no problem).

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому

Just my personal opinion/experience: it's about becoming comfortable gradually and doing regular stretching. I'd suggest not to push it since it may lead to injury, instead, just sit in seiza for a bit to challenge yourself, then change the position, then go back again. If you are forced to sit for a long time, if it's an option - you can put a cushion under your butt so that the strain wouldn't go on your hams and ankles. Also keeping your butt higher up and putting your weight on your hands on knees can save you in some situations. When you are challenging yourself when sitting in seiza - notice which muscles/areas are tense the most and stretch them regularly. If you're smart about it and won't overdo it, with time it should be back to normal :)

Amazing level of self-awarness and of integrity. Respect. I will say this, however, you should think more about what attracted you to yoga, Aikido and spirituality in general. They say that every thinker in the world is either Platonic or Aristotelian. You strike me as a Platonic thinker with a love for beauty, grace and metaphysics. If this is correct, then you will not find yourself in MMA. MMA is pragmatic, Aristotelian and violent. I think you would be happier studying Wing Shun or Taekwondo.
As for martial art efficiency, efficiency is relative. What good is any of them when compared to guns?
As for spirituality, the quest for spiritual enlightenment is not wrong; it is a great journey. Yoga and meditation don't have the substance needed to satisfy it, though. It is not the thirst, it is what you tried to satisfy it with that didn't work.
If I may, I would recommend reading Augustine's "confessions"

    • @Rokasleo

Really great comment thank you! And I agree, it's a great question (one that I'm already asking) of what brought me to Aikido and other practices initially and how that drive can be satisfied in other ways. And you are also correct about me being more Platonic. I did MMA very intensively for a year and came to a conclusion that I like it, but it's not really my thing. Thus the journey of seeking continues :) Thank you for the recommendation of the book, I will definitely look into it!

Sounds like you let the MMA guys get to you too much. As long as you know Akkido inn a legit way, whether or not the art itself is legit, nothing wrong with teaching it. At my age I'm not sure I would want to join an MMA gym even though it would be more effective than a TMA. The only problem is the masters, sabonim, sensei etc aren't honest about what is bad about their art. They could say "This is a fun kick. Never ever use it in the street, you will get taken down" for example.

Rokas Sensei, you did not quit teaching Aikido just because you stop your dojo. The past mma trainings and this success guru stuff you are now promoting, is part of your aikido way. People are now becoming motivated to learn aikido just by seeing you succeed in other endeavors because they see the self discipline that you got from the art of peace. Even if you said you quit-is not really the case because you keep showing your past images-its shortcomings and advantages, which good cause its honest.
Aikido and other stuff are not mutually exclusive...give back to aikido what it had given to you..please teach aikido again.

You don't need to justify yourself.
I understand that the current AIKIDO drift leads to TAI CHI and that disappoints those who seek a Martial Art, but all Masters are not the same, regardless of the Style you practice.
I have practiced Aikido (in different styles) for more than 20 years, and at the same time alternate training in many disciplines (Shorinji Kenpo, Wing Tsun, Karate, Taekwondo, JuJutsu, Full Contact, Muay, some Brazilian, ...).
Aikido never finished convincing me until I met my current teachers, Antonio and Marcos Peña from KISEI DOJO, because they had the Martial approach that I had always sought.
And this is so for everyone because the WAY (DO) of the BUDO is a personal search.

So you are still trying to convince someone else who had quitting his aikido and his dream that he has been disappoint from aikido because was not the aikido you are practicing now which is different than others ( and you are also implicit saying that's superior)
I believe after 20 years practicing you are not able to spar properly or defend yourself against a trained and full resistant person yet unless you trained some combat sports seriously for few years.

I am not trying to convince anyone of anything.
If I can tell you that, due to circumstances that are not relevant, I have had several confrontations, and it has worked for me.
As for you believe that our AIKIDO Style is superior, I tell you that we all believe that our Martial Style and School is superior.
I also tell you that most (not all) of AIKIDO Styles have renounced martial application and attacks lack Power, intention, technique, ...
The main difference in our Dojo with respect to other Dojos lies in the way of performing the Attacks. As I have told you, most of the veteran students come from Contact Martial Arts, and
for example it is common for us to practice "Crochet", trainings with PAOS, .....
All this forces us to modify many classical approaches in AIKIDO, and we are also stigmatized within the world of AIKIDO, calling us crazy, traitors of tradition and worse.
