    Thanks for another well made video. I went to Seaside one time and the sand was like glass. We couldn't detect a thing. This young 10 year old boy would run around and spot a clam every couple minutes for his dad. He was seeing something we definitely didn't. He was like a magician.

      I did the same thing. Then I learned a neat trick, and I have done better then many a clammer many times. I love helping find clams for other people now to when I limit. Can't dig em for them of course, but you can find holes.

    Nice video! Razors are soooo yummy! I'm from Southern Oregon but have only caught razors in Alaska. We mostly go for gapers and cockles here on the south coast.
    A couple suggestions:
    1) Clams toughen as you cook them, eventually getting the texture of a rubber band. Typically you only want to cook around 90 seconds per side to get a nice tender clam.
    2) Use unsalted butter to reduce the saltiness.

    This is the second one of your videos I have watched. Many of us pass up a chance to catch fish or seafood because we don't know what is or isn't safe to eat or how to prepare it and what parts to avoid. Hats off to you for cleaning and cooking it right on the beach or in the parking lot so we can learn. Having not grown up in the area we would not know otherwise. Thanks..

    for a camping trip, I just pre-mix some panko with four in the bag I will shake the fish, clams, rabbit, quail, deer liver or whatever in and then you can season or salt it to preference...without the unpronounceable ingredients you get in some of those mixes. Great vid, its always fun to see your take on all the activities that I also do.

    Razor clams are currently in quarantine in California. Not in Oregon? Lucky for you guys! The California Department of Public Health has warned recreational harvesters for the past couple of years that Domoic Acid levels were too high here in Northern CA for them to be a safe harvest. Otherwise I would be all over them :) Nice Video!

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574 6 років тому

      No problem, I was just stating that they are present in CA but the Department of Health suggest you do not take them most years as they are toxic from filter feeding on naturally toxic plankton.
      looks like OR does not have so many issues?

    • @Bob-fz7pd
      @Bob-fz7pd 6 років тому

      Google it. No one has ever died from red tide poisoning in Cali. I believe this is an attempt to discourage recreational fishing and not the first. Red tides dont effect large stretches of beach. When they happen there very limited so closing the season because of a claimed generalised high reading doesnt make sense.

    I looked at the title of this video and thought to myself "this guy is mistaken! Those aren't Razor Clams! They look nothing like a Razor Clam!" Imagine my surprise when I looked it up on Wiki and saw that it was!
    Here in the UK, we also use the term 'Razor clam' or 'Razorshell' to describe the Atlantic jackknife clam, (spp Ensis directus) which has a shell like an old fashioned 'straight' or 'strop' razor, used by men to shave themselves until the advent of the Bic safety razor!
    The clams in your video are Pacific Razor clams (spp.Siliqua Patula), which are mainly found on the Coastal waters off the North Western United States.
    We have a very similar looking clam in the UK which we call a 'Gaper' Clam (spp. Tresus Capax) which also looks similar to the legendary Geoduck Clams of South East Asia! (spp. Panopea Generosa)
    Great video and got my mind thinking laterally! :)
    FYI, Whilst the Atlantic jackknife clam is in the same family as the Pacific razor clam, the Jacknife clam is in a completely different genus!

    I have cooked a lot of razor clams, and if you cook them for 4 minutes on a side you're going to end up with some very chewy clams.one and a half min's per side max. Try eggwash dip the clams into some crushed club crackers, tender pieces of heaven.

  • @gdi24-7
    @gdi24-7 5 років тому

    Can you salt them out? One way we’ve gone clamming for razors when we didn’t have a shovel was to pour a pile of salt into the hole, the clam will try to expel the salt and you keep pushing the salt back in and viola the clam will burrow itself up and out of the sand. Give it a try I’m sure a container of salt is cheaper that a claminator

      They are a very mild clam taste. Have you ever had and type of clams? These are subtle and meaty a little chew to them. I much prefer little neck steamers they have a much stronger clam taste but razors are dam good. They aren't like squid at all different texture different taste. They make amazing chowder with big chunks of clam in your soup is really great. These are the funnest clams to harvest in the NW.

    I dunno, man.. You're starting that grill WAY too close to your vehicle. Literally right next to your gas tank and tires. 14:34

      Not close enough. Did he die ? No.

      Except its NOT literally next to the gas tank, that's tucked underneath the vehicle. And if a tire can withstand hot desert roads, it'll handle the warmth coming off a little burner 🙄

      @@kingravenink AGREED!!!! TIRES CAN WITHSTAND INTENSE 🏜️ HEAT AND YEA, THAT GAS TANK IS MEATAL AND NO WAY IS A FLAME GETTING THROUGH IT ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT THE TANK IS TUCKED SAFELY AWAY. I THINK HE WILL BE FINE🤔. OH WAIT HE WAS FINE!

    What kind of clam gun is that? Is it easier to pull out of the sand than the regular clam guns?

    Catching clams looks intersting. Is a fishing license necessary to catch clams?

    Will the salt method of catching razors used in the UK, also work for razors along the west coast?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  5 років тому

      It might, but I believe that's illegal here in Oregon.

    Wow those are a lot tubbier then the razor clams I'm used to. The ones I see are long and narrow, like a knife.

      Eastern razor clams are shaped almost like a foldout razor, hence the name. Pacific razors are much hulkier, resemble less of a razor. Reason they are still called a razor clam here is because the shells are extremely thin and when you break em, they can cut you like a blade. I've had my share. Feels great, actually. Like bloody music.
      Seriously though, get some sand in a cut. Hoo boy...you feel it fo sho
