The guitar work gets so much attention but Steve Shelly is one of my favorite rock drummers. Rock solid and so inventive, yet always playing what's best for the song and never showing off

Whish he would hit those drums a bit harder.
He has some of the most precise and tight drumming I've heard. I don't even think Nirvana era Dave Grohl compares to Steve Shelley.
Steve's timing I'd argue was the most consistent thing in the entire long history of the band (in his time in SY). If you watch live SY videos in like 1987 and 2010 he didn't really lose a step.
The guitar part right after Kim's vocals it's beautifully haunting

It’s great but I have trouble listening to it prior to them changing Kim’s bass part, changing the harmonic solo to a minor key.
Unbelievable. Pitch perfect, after all those years too. It just amazes me how what sounds like an off-key, improv jam to a non-fan is in fact one of the most excellent and precise compositions of our times.

It's haunting.
Imagine meeting a hot girl and she says she's schizo and it is taking her over, as you speak to her. It's a horrifying moment. This song is classic SY
This band is unreal - How they've remained relevant and urgent is enviable. High Art, this is.

So, so cool. That there is so much of the energy there still all these years later. It just means to me that these people were gut musicians all along.
Sonic Youth have been my favorite band since 1988, and you have it exactly right. Also through some Glenn Branca, Television and Velvet Underground into the mix.
Playing drums for this song is SO fun
One of SY's songs that must have made even Television envious.
I remember when they came to DC for a one-off show the week this LP was released. We had never heard these tunes. They opened with "Schizophrenia" - mind.officially.blown

Is this about Kims brother? I read the stories about him, breaks me , my best friend (my skate brother is) I wish I could just take that shit away he deserves better
chetrok1 no it's about Philip K. Dick (author of 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.... later to become Blade Runner).
Dick was born with a twin sister who died at birth, this influenced his whole life. Thurston was a real Philip K. Dick fan so he based the song loosely on him.
Thurston and Kim have both said the song is partially about/inspired by Kim’s brother who was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Cinderella's Big Score is about him.
@@YG-qg1hs the twin who died at birth was a recurring feature of earlyish SY mythology. Elvis had Jessie Garon, and both Lydia Lunch and Nick Cave claimed at various times to be survivors of twins.
