It’s really insane that one of Sonic Youth’s best songs came near the tail end of their run. They’re that kind of timeless band.
All their songs are amazing , thats why they are so timeless ! Its not for nothing they gave birth to a New era in Rock (grunge era)
That whole album is a miracle.
Seen them live about 20 times and was never let down once.
They were definitely not “the” gateway to grunge. If anything the musicians in that scene credit Melvins WAY more. Doesn’t mean anything with regards to SY’s legacy. It would just be like saying Peter, Paul, and Mary were the gateway to nu metal.
You crazy. They have so many incredible songs. Nothing like them.
Finally, the zoomed out version of the music video we all wanted.
It's literally the same video
@@kobs7863 this is a joke. watch the music video bruh
😂😂😂
For real though 😊
hellyeah
the drumming on this set is on point. so crispy
Steve Shelly is the best drummer that nobody has ever heard of
Shelley was the rock solid foundation that kept the delicious chaos and noise grounded. His parts are also creative. My drumming learned a lot from his. It's the little things like those open hats on the one during the outtro on Incinerate.
@@jspanos500 best answer ever!
Cuts through the mix but doesn’t overpower anyone, such finesse.
A lot of it is the (13") zildjian k mastersound hi hats. He chose well because they need an airbrushed, dirty sound on top of their guitar walls.
The bridge section of this song at 3:05 in when Thurston bangs the guitar and then plays this tremendous crescendo that peaks with him up-picking hard and then slamming a power chord while simultaneously turning around and getting some squealy feedback and then turning back around and playing behind the bridge... that is almost Hendrix or Townshend rock guitar god playbook level.
Who says jazzmasters don't stay in tune 🤣
@@micsunday14 His do because he has a Mastery bridge installed.
Testament to truly mastering this song, holy fuck, this guy nails every note in just the right time.
Such sick skill! Awesome.
yes yes yes
If this isn't 1 of the coolest guitar riffs you ever heard!
I think you can just tune to drop D and play the main riff on the G string
Then what?
Kim's headshake is all ready legendary
For real she looks so fuckin cool. All in, feeling the shit out of the song
Stevey Shelley is a machine
they all have healthy nice heads of hair : )
I don’t know how Thurston does it. Congrats to him
@@Gonzalez2500 Condition the ends, I think that's the trick...
@@verbslower I just bought conditioner yesterday
@@Gonzalez2500 You'll have a Thurston Moore mop of hair in no time then!
@@Gonzalez2500 *sad Billy Corgan noises*
That guitar tone though
Some other worldly stuff, especially on that riff
came here to comment exactly this.
The most Youthful and energetic band that you will see. Age does not hold meaning for them.
one could say theyre sonic youth
this was recorded 14 years before your comment, which is the same distance in time between Dirty and Rather Ripped
Sonic Eternal Youth
That way that everything comes together at 3:50 makes me shiver everytime
That guitar is so eloquently distorted and pretty. Makes me wanna cry. It speaks beautiful volumes.
Hey! It’s the bassman from Pavement! Love these guys to death!
The dueling guitar solos at 3:05 punch SO much harder in this performance than in the album version. It's much more powerful and frantic, and kind of makes me wish the original matched the intensity captured here.
One of their best songs and this performance is great
I’m so incredibly sad I didn’t get into them quicker but still happy to have found them. I remember in high school a kid in my class was wearing a sonic youth shirt, I being unaware of the band I ended up asking if it was a movie. My history teacher and him started laughing they had a good 30 difference between them, so that let me know that their sound spoke to a lot of different people no matter generation. As a fan of them now, I reflect on that memory as for telling the many nights crying and listening to the songs before my time; knowing both the student and my teacher must have years before me.
Love how Lee, Kim, and Thurston are all kind of doing their own version of rocking back and forth on their feet while playing. :D
Props to TM for keeping his teenager hair his whole life.
my GOD they sounded amazing
Double bass madness ! ❤
Fan since Goo. They still are on rotation in my car over 30 years later.
My favourite song, anytime I heard it just blows my mind

instant happiness when I hear this song
God man I've been binging on this song for the past few weeks nonstop.
This is legendary.
stunning performance, stunning verse change, stunning kim Gordon throwing the sound to the front
Is no one gonna acknowledge the fact that there are two bass players cool
ty capt obvious
10 years ago I was very fortunate to see this band live. I was 17 back then. How time does fly...
it burns
youre so fortunate
I was 17 when I saw them as well. When they toured a thousand leaves. What a fantastic memory. Sitting in the rafters of the stadium. . The sounds washing over all of us.
Excellence. Drumming is absolute.
I listened Sonic Youth from 2018 and of course I'm a new fan of them. And this song is the first introduction for me to diggin' more discographies of them.
I know this is said about so much music but that guitar harmony refrain they roll out throughout the song has to be one of the most beautiful guitar concoctions of the last 30 years, regardless of where this song stands in their oeuvre, that guitar refrain at least is fucking incredible, unimpeachable, genius, unnecessary chops confirmation, strutting gangsta leaning perfection *Fassbender perfection meme*
Immortals. Kim Gordon still as lively as she was
T is a born showman. He’s fascinating to watch.
I'm not sure if this is my neighbor's favorite band but the cops sure love them.
what a great performance...so glad I found this cheers from South Australia...Adelaide
I love this damn song. Great session.
Such an awesome group!!! Saw them at the Reading Festival in 1991. Mind blowing!!!
Masterful!
What a riff
I’m glad sonic youth and the pixies are still together and playing.
Sonic Youth broke up few years ago.
Michael Zervas that’s a bummer I was under the impression they were still together
@@Estusstew Unfortunately...
Sad news.
thurston cheated on kim so they bronk up
@@skibby69 man that sucks. I guess being band mates and having an intimate relationship too doesn’t work too well.
Two bassists...that’s actually pretty cool
But why ? 🤔
@@popolopopopo100 it’s different
@@popolopopopo100 Have a look for Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Two basses. It's an interesting sound.
Completely pointless with them playing the same thing
miss them so much
Man, it’s times like this I love being human
Beautiful Song!! 😍🖤
i love you sonic youth
I miss them so much.
one trillion actual bands couldn't even find this guitar tuning
This song makes me high just by listening, very transcending!!!
Miss this.
OUR NUMBER ONE INSPIRATION AS A BAND
it's rare to see two bass players in one band
One of my favs from SY
aceptalo, no es tu primera vez aca, que buen gusto tienes
Love this song
Awesome
amo esta banda
I didn't care much about SY in the 1990s (of course I liked several songs) but I fell for Rather Ripped the moment it came out. And I never got tired of it
that might be the most beautiful song I ever saw.
Two bassists? You already got my attention on lock. Oh, song's pretty nice as well.
The drummer is on fireee !
No se que decir me dejan sin palabras, maravillosa versión

So much energy in this video, fucking loveee this song and what they are making me feel
Sonic Youth, le top du top ! Des rifs d'un autre monde fan depuis 1995 !
F ing brilliant!
My god, what a song ! And how effortlessly cool they play it, absolute masters !
It's a band that spans more than a generation, but when I heard it for the first time, my head panicked, but it's a pleasant music. I want you to come to Japan again.
also amaze me how it sounds like the record!
que hermosoooo
Love me some pavement bass
