How Am I going to like this video when is stupid do this without removing the front seat. 4 bolts and some connectors under seat, that's it.
--- Are we SNAKE? nooooo. remove the seat people. Trust me: REMOVE THE STUPID SEAT AND YOU WILL THANK ME 10 TIMES.
Bruh.. Still dirty from just finishing this job on a '13. This vid is great for the disassembly. Thanks @Stupid!
Tip for the column pivot bolt going back in- There's a flat, horizontal piece of metal, center of where the pivot holes are in the column, facing the engine bay. That flat piece mates up to a rectangle hole in the bracket that the pivot bolt goes through. Stick that in and lift the whole steering column up until you can place the TILT bolt in at the wheel end of the column. Then, go back under and get the pivot bolt aligned. I thought I was going to die under there until I spotted that detail.
Good tip!
I was told this would be $600 to fix 🤣🤣🤣 gonna give this a try THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
All that labor to get in there to fix it is the problem. Pain in the ass whether you are an expert or not.
When you do it you will see why it’s 600 to fix. 😂
They told me 800!
@@mattya7023I just did this and it wasn’t easy at all. Took me about 3 hours give or take but I’m no mechanic. Hardest part is getting that steering column back up and getting that back bolt back in. That alone took most of the time.
Thanks from the UK. My electric power steering problem is that I have non whatsoever. I've replaced the steering angle sensor as that is what two different scan tools have shown as the issue ( c1260 fault code ) but it still has no power steering. Further investigation to do
This should be a recalled part my daughter has had a 2013 and a 2015 and had to replace this part in both of them before 150k miles
Thank you so much! There is actually an extended warranty for this, 10 yrs or 100,000, Extended Warranty TXX7, For Elantra years 2007-2015. I received the notice in the mail in year 2017 from Hyundai. Made appointment with dealer to get this fixed!
I believe they added a bit onto that warranty.
I'm a 58 year old women and I guarantee I just saved alot of money to have this fixed and not taken advantage of
How much time did it take ?
@@thelord7833depends on the tool usage. Lol. I took 4 hours to fix
4 hours to fix it also, the hardest part when the column is drop and trying to take the motor part and put back on. The column is heavy, also a lot of effort to put it back. Everything works now. 🎉
@@zanthiel2009 Yea, that part. That was the job, putting that thing back lol.
You make a very educational video
That was smart how you explained the reason for the noise. It's not the moving back and forth that is causing it. It is the motor activating and moving in that space that is no longer filled by the coupler since it has basically disintegrated.
Great video, just bought a 2014 Kia forte and it started doing this on the ride home. Was pretty scared about what the issue was until I watched this video. Great explaining as well!!!!
Nice video. I would suggest a small brush to clean out the mating surfaces before reassembly
Yeah that would be good
I’ve been looking for a video to really help me determine if that was the problem. I like the way you verified and explained everything. I do wish it was the first video that popped up. Thanks man
You comment helps it move up the list, Thank you!
@@buildsomethingstupid1736It was the first one for me. Thank you.
I did it on a Hyundai Elantra 2012 model, on 2/27/2024, have 185000 miles on it. Good video for this.
great video, im a little unclear on one comment you made when you placed your knee against the tire. Are you saying that if I move the steering and have my knee on the wheel that I should be able to feel that clunk at my knee? Currently when I move my steering wheel I can visually see my tire move slightly but I do not feel that steering issue transferred to my knee.
So sometimes when an inner tie rod fails you get a lot of movement in the joint. The joint is a ball and socket which can make a noise exactly like the failed rubber piece replaced in the video. If both tires wiggle slightly then most likely it is this rubber bushing because that tiny steering wheel movement was enough to affect change in the tire. If you noticed one tire did not wiggle then a piece of linkage may be worn out.
I’m stuck under heavy rai. Watching this like I. In 1st grade … this guy is amazing !!!!! I save so much money
So much better than the other videos out there. Concise, informative, and intuitive. Thank you, You have yourself a new subscriber.
Thanks!
Excellent video, thanks!
I replaced the coupler in my 2013 Elantra today after watching this video.
The only comment I would make is that I tried to reassemble the forward pivot bolt after putting a temporary pin through the adjuster bolt slot to hold the wheel up. You pretty much have to poke the forward end of the column up into position FIRST and then the pivot bolt hole lines up as soon as the wheel is raised into place. Made all the difference after fighting the column while trying to line up the pivot bolt to the column hole.
Thanks again for sharing.
I have done this to my car, my advice is dont do it by yourself unless it feels very bad, because the procedure is super complex and hard
When putting it back together, should I put the pivot bolt back in first or the adjuster bolt? This would help a lot! Thank you!
Hello just did mine but the bushing was perfectly fine? But replaced it anyway with a new one and after assembly and started the vehicle the noise is still very much present!?
I did check all tie rod ends and intermediate shaft joints and those checked all good.
Is there another component in the column that also wears out.?
Can you not make à steel couple in place of the plastic
I think you could but it would wear the gears on the motor and shaft instead of the replaceable rubber bushing
I think I'm giving up on this one! I took a while to find the 14 mm nut and been trying for a while to get it to budge. It's like it was put on with an impact wrench. I fear stripping or breaking the head from the nut.
I am thinking of buying a used car that has this issue. I wanted to see how complicated this project is prior to purchasing. Fyi your calming voice makes me feel that this fix is actually possible for non-mechanics like me!
Its funny you say that because I hate the sound of my voice but I have soo many people comment that its calming and I should narrate a book or something
Could a faulty steering flex coupler cause the EPS light to turn on? As I had this issue for a while but one morning I started my car and the light just turned on. Power steering fluid is good power steering works but clunk is always there. I also removed the steering shaft u joint thinking that was the issue only to realize that the clunk was still there. Let me know please.
Great work man. My car does the same exact sound (Hyundai I30). Although I'm not sure I could do that. Thank you!
I believe in you
2012 Elantra with 17k miles 😂 I knew the car was cheap but a replacement at 17k is wild! Great video, 3 hours later and maybe we’ll get another 20k miles in before the new OEM coupler goes out ;) I’d like to think dry rotting of the plastic may be a small factor due to age?
I had a hard time getting the pivot point lined back up, and overall took about 3 hours, most of that time being putting everything back together, so a step by step there would be appreciated. But that said, this was super helpful!
One improvement to this great video is, don't take the steering tilt lever bolt out, take the 2 bolts above it out instead.
yeah those are tricky to put back in
Extremely helpful video. I salute guys like you who are prepared to take the time to share your knowledge. Many Thanks!! - from Western Australia.
Thats pretty cool to think you're working on your car in Australia after watching me work on my car in the US. What a time to be alive
I love your video its make show that you can not make a mistake awesome keep up the great job your video are awesome 👏 👍
common problem with certain hyundai and kia models. should be a factory recall. over 500,000 of these cars have been repaired for this defect. Hyundai has extended their warranty from 100k to 120k to cover this problem.
thats nice, this one might have been covered then
@@buildsomethingstupid1736 indeed, I think it would have been covered since your car only has 63K. Here's a very detailed video of the same repair, take a look.

Hello. Does this work for hyundai i40 2012? I have the same problem.
thanks sir.. for the video
This is a great video. After watching it, I decided this was just a little more than I could handle, so I took it to the dealer. Hyundai did a warranty extension for this, but you are out of luck if your car is more than 10 years old or has more than 100k miles. The repair cost me $395 plus tax.
yeesh.. i just got a 4 pack of those things for $6.35 shipped
It's always the labour that's the kicker
What's the name of that part
I talked to corporate customer service they said this isn't a safety issue. Thats why they didn't have a recall on it. I don't have $400 for dealership to fix it. I wonder if you can drive it without replacing it due to its not a safety issue.
I had been under the impression that they extended it to 125k miles. Mine started doing that at about 130k miles.
hey sir thanks for the video and was your steering wheel locked when you had this problem? I have the same problem in my 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid car, in addition, sometimes my steering wheel is locked at slow speeds and there is a red steering wheel failure in the dash, when I stop and start it back the engine, my steering wheel works well but the sound continues, mechanic told me that only the parts will cost $2,300. should I try this $10 part?
Look I'm going to try and do this myself. Can u help me by any chance
This is the third video I watched and by far the best. Thanks for the solid explanations!
Thanks
yeah geez what a job for such a small little part. I fault finded the issue thinking it was a loose screw on the coupling, but it makes sense for the rubber damper for the drive motor.
pretty sure mine has failed at 120'000km ( 75k miles)
great video!
My guess is if youre in the city 60k miles and highway maybe 120k before it fails
Hello.
I have a hyundai ioniq 2021 and I have a similar noise just not as loud. could it be the same problem?
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I'm not DIY'ing the fix, but the ruling out part is super helpful.
Troubleshooting my son's 2013 Elantra, I was getting ready to replace the rack before I saw your video. Now i'm going to take a second look before replacing that rack. Thanks for your advice.
This is the worst way to do this job and you don’t show how to put it back. It’s better leaving the adjuster bolt alone and drop the 2 steering wheel bolts off! Save yourself the trouble trust me
True, I lefted it on and had to look up how to put the steering column back on because it was tough tbh. Doing the coupler was simple.
Is there a more permanent fix for this issue?
I dont think so, its just going to wear out again eventually
Easy 3 hour paying job. That's what i sold them for.
My friend charged 800$ for this 100$ per labour 1$ part 😅
The engineers at hyundai need to come up with a different design without plastic part in there. Planned absolescene is what this is.
It's very sus isn't it? Not cool.....
My car is doing this. What happens if you don’t get it replaced?
cool.different ball game on a rh drive uk vehicle though.
THANK YOU 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Glad to help
Very nice! Thank you for sharing this!
From there can you pull out worm drive if need to
06:27 where is this bolt ? (thanks for the video)
" im gonna get the vaccuum and vacuum all of that stuff"
Air blower- 😂😂😂
Man, you have been a Godsend thanks a million
Thanks
Thank you so much! Saw another video where they didn’t explain or back out enough to see where they are
Love how easy 6ou made this, my dude. Thank you
Was very helpful.. thanks
Great video. All the steps are clear.
This should be recalled by Hyundai as just about every Hyundai cars have this exact problem. My 2012 Elantra has the exact problem as well, so thanks for sharing your video. After watching this video, I will go to get that $10 part and will try to install it myself.
How'd it go?
My 2010 kia venga has the same issue.
They extended the warranty for this.
@@karlroveyhow long is the warranty? I have a 2013
@RRLV434 I believe they extended it from 100,000 to 125,000 miles.
You should have put the part where you took the wheel adjuster bolt out to show in what order the washers and springs go in.
I agree sorry. Also my wife came out and kicked the bolt and all the washers while i was filming it
If i dont fix it can it be dangerous?
This is an amazing video! I have had the knock for about a month and have just procrastinated fixing it. I am just mad that I didn't find this simple fix sooner. I was so worried I was gonna have to make a drastic repair to my Elantra.
how much you paid to fix it?
Very clear and helpful. Thanks
I would wacuum and clean all the bits and peaces out of there before putting the new part in. Great video
Solid Plan
Same issue i have
Thank you so much for saving our money
I commented agian because your video is on the top after I search 😊
Glad to hear it!
Where is the link to the part? 😞
Great video ! Thank you for the help !
I did it today, on an Elantra, have 185,000 miles on it. Good video.
Thanks this one only last 60k
Great video BUT I'm not even going to risk it 😂😂😂
Lol you can do it!
What if you disconnect the battery and still hear the clunk?
Sounds like maybe something else
Absolutely remarkable godlike ❤️🔥 thank you I just did it
Thanks
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic video man
Thanks for sharing 👍 ❤it. I ask earlier about the elantra electric steering problems. Why steering EPS light comes on. My wife said she was at a drive true and the steering wheel turn 360 degrees and the front wheels did not turn. Your explanation is spot on.thanks must. I think I can fix it...💯👍👍👍
I accidentally pulled the steering wheel off with the column and put everything back together but the steering wheel is upside down. I took it apart and reinstalled with the steering wheel in a different position and it’s still upside down. How do I fix it?

My 11 year old UK Hyundai i40 did that, it got progressively worse and at times the steering shuddered violently at 70mph on the motorway. Was quoted £3000 for repair (mine had a knee airbag, no way I was gonna mess with it). Just sold the car….
Thanks
There is so much that is skipped in this video. Specifically how he manages to put his tiny hands behind the electric motor and how to release the spring on the tilt adjust. But its okay bro, some of us can improvise where you leave out some of the most CRITICAL PARTS. 😂😂😂😂
Just paid dealership over 700 for this on a 2012 Veloster. Wish I had of looked here first.
I'm about to get this done. I'm sure it will be over $500. He said the part wasn't much but the labor cost were high. I don't have the confidence to do it myself.
Great video! But I have a question. I've heard in another video that the sensor in the steering wheel has to get calibrated. Is that true? I have a 2013 Kia Soul. Thank you.
Thank you so much for showing the whole process and the part number!!
Thanks for the tutorial. It would have been cool to see how the 3 screws were taken off with 2 hands🤔😁
Direct and to the point, really appreciate that👍🏾
Excellent work!
excellent job bro
Thanks, I tried to be complete
excellent ty
I have a 2016 Elantra and I have the same sound. Do you think this is the problem? I went to a mechanic and he told me that Hyundai fixed the defect after the 2015 models, and now I don’t want to try and get tired in vain. I don’t know what to do.
Great video. i have the same knock, but even with the engine off. is it possible that it is the intermediate shaft instead? Thanks
Good job! Other videos show removal of entire wire harness, yous is better!
Part is called a STEERING COUPLER or STEERING COUPLING
someone told me i could lock myself out of my column if it’s not programmed properly again can someone explain that ? he said they have to connect a computer to the ecu of my car to reprogram it
I can’t get to the nut and bolt at 22:00 because my car is right hand drive and there is stuff in the way as the orientation is reversed!
Suggestions??
Like
VERY GOOD VIDEO. WILL YOU PLEASE CONNFIRM IS THAT T 27 OR T30 SCREW REMOVER ? THANKS
Great video!
I was just quoted 600 big ones, giving this a go myself
Thank you , very thoughtful to upload this for us ,really appreciate it 😊
I got a elentra and i got the same noise exactly the same one..question that problem can make ur car dont wanna turn on because sometimes i got it hit couple times under the wheel for my car can turn on...its that something you got it fix asap??
