David Johansen with Budd Mishkiin (Full Event)

- For 50 years, David Johansen has lived a life in music and, “with his exaggerated pompadour, crocodile grin, and raw Tom Waits growl, he’s still having the time of his life,” wrote The New York Times’ Stephen Holden after one of his recent Café Carlyle shows. He talks about that life, New York then and now, what’s “authentic” in music, and if it matters, with NY1’s Budd Mishkin.
Recorded on September 21, 2015 at 92nd Street Y.

Love Johansen, so cool. so good to hear him happy and healthy.
I could listen to David all day, I think he's brilliant, of course I adore the Dolls but everything he does is worthy. Even his deep, gruff, Noo Yawk speaking voice is hypnotic, surprised he never got into voice overs/narration.
He actually did some voiceovers as well as a few nice acting jobs - as in Scrooged with Bill Murray. His voice is indeed addictive. And he had already this deep bluesy voice when he was young!
Totally agree….the tone of his voice and the cadenza…..
This is a joy. Every damn moment! Well done, Bud, you were so relaxed and receptive. You brought the best out of David. Good grief, "Pills", gorgeously delivered. Wallop! How could anyone, even if their mojo's halfway working, tire of David's pithy anecdotes and tongue-in-cheek yet life-affirming meditations on all things past and present? Dennis and Dawn, all the way from the grotty UK, cheers! xx
As of now, it’s shocking it’s haunting and it’s sad to see David the only Doll still standing 🥺
Can't believe he's my dad's age most guys in their 70s don't look like David lol Brad Pitt hopes he will look like that one day
Yup 😢
Johansen is one of my all-time favorites (and I'm not even a big music person; I can pretty much count my favorites on one hand). I certainly would have been there that night had I known about it, but big thanks to the 92nd Street Y for recording it! He seems like a really laid-back, good-humored guy who's fun to hang out with.
I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille).
Just now found this!
Not sure how I missed it.
Got a chance to meet him in Portland, Or. during 'Live It Up' tour. He was REALLY COOL to us common folk! I'm a real J.T. fan. But I think David Jo was at least half the songwriting on those incredible Dolls songs! Always loved his solo stuff too. -Dave B.
Classy man. Honest man. Intelligent man. Keep going David; we love you.
i am in awe of his decency and his willingness to live and learn and be ....!!
I like his vibes...very artistic, free and unencumbered...
It is heartbreaking that David is the only one of the Dolls left.
Their influence is immeasurable.
The RnRHOF missed the boat years ago
The dolls played the Mercer Arts Center and Max's Kansas City. That never appeared at cbgb's in the 70s
Such a legend. Love the dolls, and love David’s acting performance in Freejack.
Can't believe he's from the same borough as Angelina in Jersey shore lol
That there are only 1176 attendees at this time and two comments speaks volume.....ha......about David. He is an acquired taste. Is that how it is stated? Wikipedia: An acquired taste often refers to an
appreciation for a food or beverage that is unlikely to be enjoyed by a
person who has not had substantial exposure to it, usually because of
some unfamiliar aspect of the food or beverage, including a strong or
strange odor (e.g. stinky tofu, durian, hákarl, black salt, natto, ...
He seems a natural entertainer and a good one. I like him, a lot.
David , really good to see you looking fit and sounding great . We met at "The Cornstalk Fence " down in N.O...I think you were on your honeymoon I was with Leigh "Lil Queenie" Harris a local favorite of mine...we spoke of the days ahead ...hope you're pleased with success ...always good to see how you're doing .
David is very cool. I love all periods of his music. I met him and Syl once after a reunited Dolls show at Tower Records in L.A. They tore the roof off. I've always loved Heart Of Gold. My son wants us to go see a Buster show. Hopefully we can do that before It's Too Late.
Great interview (minus the damn annoying ads)!
The one thing that always bothered me is that David seemed to have a certain disdain for the Dolls fans. He seemed to think of them as non-intellectual. His use of "Heavy Mental" or gatherings of a "Hitler Youth Rally" always seemed to irk me. The Dolls were awesome and integral to his existance.
Love this guy, then and now 💯
wish I could see his play lists on his computer. I like his persona all of them it's just we need new names he is what we love
he has a radio show on Sirius XM
Right, ...
Love this guy
David did play CBGBs! The only instance I can remember was May 4 1977 with Richard Sohl, Andy and Jonathan Paley, Lenny Kaye, Pat Dharma, and Richard Hell. It was filmed and photographed by Bob Gruen. Though I can’t find any record of the Dolls playing in Nevada.
Also the Memphis story was September 21st 1973. He told the story pretty much how it was, only thing I’d add is several newspapers reported on it with tons of lies. That he was arrested for getting in a fight, crossdressing, or the most popular was that he threw a guitar in the audience. None of that’s true.
HE plays the harmonica well hence I hit the like button
He's a person I'd love to meet. He's seen it all
He tried to beat my ass when I exposed him ....he played in full face covering and costume in the 80s.
@@RnREnglands exposed him? Sounds like BS
Great anecdote starts at 33:10
One of my heroes… they don’t make em like David anymore
Johnny Carson & David Johansen....both are practiced magicians
David Johansen against all odds overcame a heroin addiction during his earlier career.
This was a difficult task especially because after his recovery he was still exposed to the temptation because of his music and acting endeavors.
I’m glad David was compassionate towards Arthur Kane during their reunion gig starting in the UK.
Arthur was living an obscure life during the last 30 years in LA .
Arthur seldom played his bass guitar during this time and wasn’t confident he could deliver for his band mates and fans once it all came together, yet he did a remarkable job.
Arthur’s conversion to Christianity was respected by David Johansen and I’m glad these two men reached a comfort level with each other during their reconciliation.
In their younger days these two men had a lot of tension among one another that helped lead to the New York Dolls disbanding.
Prior to the band getting together after a 30 year down time their last conversation was a yelling match in a Florida mobile home park.
RIP Arthur Killer Kane and wishing David Johansen much success and happiness.
David Jo rather subdued or is that subdude? Love ya Busta! Paul Butterfield must of left an imprint on him...Doo- Dale...and that cig growl. Much more relaxed than this recent Scorcese thing although it's many years later
David - you make people happy (esp. with Jet Boy performance 'Old Grey Whistle Test' - that's what counts in what appears to be a horrible world sometimes..
What he never talks about....is that Dolls songs.....the lyrical phrasing...timing ....accent...subject....were a very...nuanced carefully projected ( breath control ) ...style that he created and progressed with......
The top of it was Wreckless Crazy. The breath and volume,accent....near impossible........he put it on In Style. But it was much mo off the hook with Thunders & Co.
Let it ride. Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, and David Jo. Hysterical movie..
ALL HAIL TELEVISION!
ALL HAIL THE NEW YORK DOLLS!
All hail....the ny butts
was at the show in Austin TX was so good.
just bought the dolls latest and its a rocker! rock on davidjo!
Man I pray I have hair like that at his age
What a class act...
LIVING LEGEND
where is this "new" cd it's 2017!
That song brings sweet tears to my eyes xx
Funky but chic. Love D.J.
I'm immediately impressed by how quickly he corrected this Mishkiin kid, who is clearly not up on music or entertainment 'anything' (thus he really shouldn't be interviewing David Johansson for anything as a result. But David was willing to respect his uselessness and shared some good stories. You can tell that not only is David a gentleman, but a seasoned veteran. Keeps his audience engaged while not being distracted by shallow questions)
First off, David retorts "I didn't play CBGBs" ( paraphrasing ) which is true. If anyone knows punk, American Punk, they would know that Max's Kansas City was the OG of punk stages and later there was CBGBs (comparing only the two, and before the reunion). The Dolls didn't play at the ladder.... CBGBs didn't exist as a punk venue until later.
Second cool thing David says is that he jammed with Suicide or might have jammed with Suicide ( Martin Rev and Alan Vega ).
So cool to hear him say this. Wonderful to hear him speak.
I am glad to see him in good shape ... we can't say the same about everyone of the Dolls :-(
No…because they are all dead 🙄
love the comment around 19:40 seconds in, where he says how HOT HOT HOT was the only time his taste converged with the general public.
The first time I saw David Johansen, he was the victim of an demonic black cat that went down his throat in Tales from the dark side. I was 8 years old. I felt so bad for him
residentevilrulz LOL! AWWWZ
haha yep. or the
cab driver in "scrooged"
WWOZ in New Orleans!
Oh yeah, do tell
I hate to say this, as I love The Dolls as a collective…but I’ve never been a fan of DJ. In fact, I think he is what held them back from ever realizing the fame they deserved. An over-rated, Jagger clone with limited talent and a MASSIVE ego. I wish I felt otherwise, and believe me, as a fan of the band, I’ve tried to cut him some slack and change my view. I just can’t.
I saw a punk documentary where the Dolls desperate, so they dressed all in red and pretended to be Communists to be scary, that was the end lol
There is only one David Jo.
So dumb....l go in Tramps to see him....and he knew me..he comes over sit's by me.... Anyway.he does this fucking song( same here song ) it's too touching...l can't take him singing that line........lt just makes your head drop.
Sounds like someone had cool parents lol
William H Macy hasn't aged well...
No but Mr Gallagher is looking very good
Scrooged
Terrible chairs to sit on for over an hour and pretend you're feigning interest.....
BOTTOM LINE
He sounds like a New York Mark Hamill.
My very least favorite NY Doll.
Okay booster
God awful photographer who shot this
He SUCKS he ruined the Best band in Rock n Roll with his baseless ego... The New York Dolls will always be the only worthwhile thing you ever did and you f'd that up.
More a case of John and Jerry's spiralling heroin addiction ruining the Dolls..
@@Mrpublicimagelimited I'm sure that was not easy to deal with...however JT and Jerry walked when buster proclaimed HE was "the star" and everyone else can be replaced. In later years he never said anything good about his life as a New York Doll .... F 'im
Okay booster. With all due respect you are a fucking idiot. Johnny & Jerry's drug habit ruin the dolls with a lot of help from Malcolm McLaren. But you wouldn't know because you were not there
@@AlmostReady504 SLAP ... STFU internet shit talkers and glory hogs like DJ are pretty much the same to me. take a nap
Right, heroin had nothing to do with it.
And for 50 years this poseur has vandalized every genre of music he's touch!! P.U.!
Chris Shenzo Are you on crack!?! Why do you say that???
@@trembling3674You only wish. Awful, awful!
You must be a riot at parties.
wish I could see his play lists on his computer. I like his persona all of them it's just we need new names he is what we love
