I could sit and listen to Don Henley talk all night long. I know some people through knee jerk reactions like to lambast him, but he is truly a National Original and a National Treasure. So erudite, witty and generous. I feel each time I listen to him that I am a better person afterwards. Also hats off to Billy Joel for being one of the most engaging hosts imaginable. One who knows that being an interviewer means being the prompt then getting out of the way. Bravo!
I laughed when Don Henley said that now he feels a little more comfortable calling himself a songwriter, because I've always thought of him as a great songwriter. Many of his lyrics have expressed the feelings at the center of my heart so well. His song "Heart of the Matter" brought a lot of healing to me years after my parents divorce.
How about Don Henley's "Forgiveness"? Reminds me of my ex-wife. I blew it, told her so and asked her for forgiveness, but she hates me even after 40 years.
Don Henley's intelligence shines whenever he opens his mouth (singing or in interviews with him), there's no fool to prove here. He is well-rounded, and so well-spoken. His parents must have been brilliant as well (genius in the genes).
It doesn't sound like he has a whole lot of humility in reality. gradually pushed Felder's share down to a third of his on some of the things they were releasing during their big second run in the 90s and 2000s. When felder didn't agree, they said "he was bad for band chemistry" and kicked him out. Every time Henley talks, he can't resist complaining about not getting his fair share of money every time any of their music is used online.
@@daw162 you could not know with any certainty. Are you Felders brother? Maybe Henley is an ass, maybe Felder is, or maybe they both have their own version. Finally who cares? Rhonda said he’s interesting to her and encouraging. Don’t shit on her opinion because you think you know something.
I was drawn to this interview because the Eagles have always been my all-time favorite band. At 15, I fell in love with both my first husband and the Eagle’s! I’m 62 now and although my first marriage didn’t last, my love for the Eagle’s music has never left my heart! I knew Don Henley was an intelligent man but I had no idea just how intelligent. His memory of events from his childhood and name’s of people who effected his career blew me away! At 62 I can remember event’s that happened throughout my life but my short term memory is fading. Don appears to have total recall and I was very impressed with his knowledge of the past. For a man that has achieved great accomplishments and stardom, I found him to be very humble and genuine.
Don Henley was standing next to me when I said to him; "Mr. Henley, I've chosen your campaign to save Walden as the topic of my term paper this semester." Well, THAT got his interest! He showed a great level of sincerity in wanting to help me find sources for my research on the paper. Even as he was being pulled away by his entourage her turned to find me just to say; "Good luck on your paper." I thought that he was very generous with his time towards wanting to help and talk to me. (Just FYI this was at a live radio broadcast at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC about 1990.)
The Eagles have always been a much loved band in our household. My mom's favorite song was Take it to the Limit. She passed just before covid hit but this song will always remind me of her. My favorite Henley song is Heart of the Matter. Ironically a song my ex-husband and I always had playing in the car before we ended up divorced. I am very familiar with all the Eagles, past and present and all the talent that has encompassed this legendary band BUT I never really listened to any interviews or know too much about them aside from their tremendous musical gifts. I heard stories about Henley and always assumed he wasn't very nice. He always looks so stern and serious, a bit angry even... Well I am soooo glad I listened to this interview and now have a whole other perception! Henley is very introspective and deep. He also shows wonderful thought and consideration for others. He is not only a great song writer and talent, his voice is beautiful. Great interview!!
This is the first time I have ever listened to Don Henley giving an introspective interview. He's a thoughtful and considerate individual and extremely talented man. Thanks to Billy Joel and Don Henley for doing this.
I just caught this tonight. As I read the comments, yours Thor, are just about what I was going to say and more. A very enjoyable storytelling interview like I have never heard before from Don. Wonderful! 😊
And how she said she "had to rare back and get it." And then left the hospital to do a video only to return to the hospital after. That's one tough lady as well.
Don, and Billy, I'm sure you've heard some version of this before. I'm 59 years old. Your music helped me define my life, when I was a teenager and after. When music is so profound, that the listener, with little imagination, can see themselves in the situation you sing about, and it brings comfort, and understanding, at a youthful time in our lives, when nothing else does, then that's much more than important. I want to say, God Blessed both of you guys, but God blessed the public that enjoys and relates to your music, even more. Thank You, so much.
What a terrific interview! I've never had a chance to hear the Eagles or Don Henley in concert, but I did have a chance to see Billy Joel at a concert at a small community college in NJ in the mid 70's. What a show! These 2 are true icons in the music world.
I was 16 when I took my mom to an Eagles concert in 76'.. Their encore song was Hotel California, months before it was released!.. yea.. so much more to say but. yea.. good old days..
I was in the front row when Don Henley played Red Rocks in 1985 (Katrina and the Waves opened for him). And then I also saw the Eagles in Denver when they got back together in the mid-90s.
Don Henley has one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) voices of all time. It’s been a part of my life since I was about 7 or 8. Very distinctive. The fact that he’s a scholar and conservationist just adds to the admiration.
This is amazing. Two legends. Riveting interview!! And I completely agree with Henley. Country music today is NOT country music. And radio, back when it had no format was AWESOME.
Both of these guys are two of the best songwriters ever. Think two great examples are "End of the innocence" by Don Henley. And "Leningrad" by Billy Joel. Lyrics that can reach your soul and help you reflect on your own life's experiences.
What a joy to listen to this program. Having the 4th top selling artist, Don Henley of the Eagles, talking and telling stories and sharing musical history with the 6th top selling artist, Billy Joel. The jewels of insight and wisdom and artistic process that the two of them share are invaluable for all that desire to be an artist!!! Thank you so much for this!!!!!
After seeing this video. I think a lot more of Don Henley than I used to. Dan Hatley seems to be a very cool person. I always loved the Eagles. Being a solo instrumental, guitaris . Hotel, California is one of my favorite songs to play. Hats off to you Don Henley. Thanks for all the music and all that you contributed to society thank you.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸🎼🎶🎵🎸☮️
I hold so much love and respect for Don Henley! A man of great intelligence and has not forgot his roots. That great bluesy voice can still wail and one of the great lyricists. I do hope that Don and Billy collaborate at some point.
Don really has a difficult time singing with his regular voice and he forces a raspy type soulish voice that allows him to hit the notes that the songs are written in and it works really well. The Eagles spent a lot of time making sure that their voices harmonized.
His voice is not that high....Randy Meisner, who Henley and Frey alienated from the band, was the one who hit the high notes ( Take it to the Limit) and later Timothy B Schmidt hit the high notes....as usual, Henley given credit where it ISN'T DUE !!!
I have new respect for Don after hearing his story. I grew up listening to Glen Campbell and Buck Owens. And being a drummer that finally learned how song and play I FEEL HIM when he explained how hard that is. Cheers Don!!
I think there are only a few people in the history of this planet who could both play drums and sing well, both live and professionally. He is among those very few.
@@leekosmin8788 I find it virtually impossible, although if I just play the root notes, and the song is simple, I can manage it. Drumming, on the other hand, is physically draining. Plus, you have to sing, with cadence and subtlety. Doing it on stage for two hours might be possible for maybe nobody....
We grow up together, depending on one another. The Eagles got me through a lot of lonely nights and incredible moments. I grew up singing in the church, my father was a minister so I was constantly around music. Still appreciate their hard work and sacrifice. ALWAYS.
In my favorite episode of ITAS, James Lipton interviews a very engaged, very animated Billy Joel. When he introduced a song-writing concept he didn't _explain_ it, he jumped out of his chair, hustled to the piano, and demonstrated with an example from one of his own hits. It was a revelation. I'd loved music since I could breathe but I didn't have a clue where it came from. And here Billy was showing us his secret process. Thank you for that, Billy Joel. I'll always love you. Don, I have my own rich radio history with you and the Eagles, principally you...the Silver Bullet Band and others. I evaluated you differently as i heard more and more...so much more in those depths than I'd ever suspected. That process is ongoing. Thank you for that, Don. I'll always love you.
I don't even know how I got here but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Two absolute giants in the industry who I grew up with and both of their respective catalogs are part of the soundtrack to my life. They both have had unbelievable and respectable careers.
Love Don Henley, too. Not only for the incredible music he has created BUT for his environmental concerns with the Walden Woods Project. Our family shares his concern in the future ahead.....and we grew up similarly to him, small town in Pa..... with so many changes in the past few decades. We pray everyday for our children & their future . Thank you, Don Henley, Carry on.... Eric & Gwen Hull
Two Titans of American music. Growing up in my house, the two main bands that were always played were CCR and The Eagles; and then, in my early teens, you know, when you start to spread your wings and discover new music that you can call your own? That's when I zeroed in on Billy Joel and his music. To see these two in this setting is like my whole universe coming together to make everything make sense.
Billy Joel and Don Henley are so gracious. Very touching interview, so much substance to this interview, just like Don Henley's song writing and Billy Joel's song writing. Both Billy Joel and Don Henley really showed their "true, sweet souls" in this lovely interview. Thank you so much for this, made my day. I have always supported the Eagle's, it's a"family tradition" and I have always supported Don Henley as a solo artist, especially since the late 80's and 1990, my parents had passed away a couple of years before the "End Of The Innocence " album came out and it was a true healer for me, of course you never get over your parents but this album really inspired me a gave me new air to breath, so thank you for that Mr. Henley. When I heard about "Walden Woods" I was on board . Don Henley came to town here in Atlanta, Georgia to promote his book for "Walden Woods" called "Heaven is Under our Feet" it was December 1991, I had to work but I wanted that book, I wanted to meet Don Henley as well, so I mentioned it to my brother, so he got with my other brother who really lives in Ohio but was visiting and sent him to the book store to buy two copies for me and my sister with Don Henley's signature and the date. Very nice book with a lot of very respectful artists who tell their favorite "Thoreau" piece of literature and Bette Midler is one of those very nice group of artists. Loved her last HBO special. So glad to hear that "Walden Woods" is progressing and I could be a very little, little part of. Congrats to Don Henley. I love what you did for the gentlemen from Iran, people would be surprised to know that a lot of the people from Iran really like american culture, like at one time the "Eagles" were the people of Iran's favorite band. Can't believe all the people, shows and the artists that Don Henley mentioned because I grew up remembering everything and everybody he was talking about. Loved what D.H. said about Glenn Campbell, I used to watch that show with my dad along with those other shows D.H. mentioned. You forget how great that time period was and the kick butt music. My heart and my thoughts to Glenn Campbell and his family, I started a Face Book but then I changed my mind, trust issues, anyway Face Book will ask you to name one of your favorite sayings or phrases and mine was..............Glenn Campbell responded to someone asking Mr. Campbell what was his favorite genre of music and Mr. Campbell said "man I just like a good song" very special and inclusive answer, I was told once "never be a music snob". I agree with Billy Joel about the album not sounding all country, I got that right away, in fact I thought to my self some of these songs sound like good ole country and some just have that Don Henley signature "Greatness" very beautiful collections of songs, I know the words to most of these songs can't help my self I love to sing a long with Don Henley!! Love everyone on this album and every song. "Take A Picture Of This", "That Old Flame","When I Stop Dreaming" Funny story about Dolly, deep respect. "Too Far Gone", "She Sang Hymns Out Of Tune" carried a yellow balloon , she turned ten thousand when she touched the moon and went to the people, the people who are. "words Can Break Your Heart" and "Waiting Tables" she learned a lot about people more than she ever wanted to KNOW" Thank you Billy Joel, you were wonderful in this interview and you are a "power house of a musician your self, very humble" Oh yea, one more "Bramble Rose" very, very beautiful, a little dark but i love this song to. Both of you have a great new year!!!! "Cass County"
I adore Don Henely I have followed him and his music my whole life. He is and will always be my all time favorite!!! Billy Joel is also a very talented artist and I love his music also!!
I have always felt that the Eagles “Desperado” album was their best. It was their second album and was not received well from the critics. It tells a story all the way through from the first track to the end. Kind of like a rock opera with a old western story line. My favorite track is the last. The Doolin Dalton/ Desparado reprise. CLASSIC!
It is April 15, 2020. I'm thankful for 92Y, and especially Billy and Don. I watched this during a hard night of being alone. Sometimes you never know who you will touch by doing the ordinary
I get a hard night being alone. I have always liked billy and don, musically as well as there personanallity. I know how hard it is to sing while playing percussion. I love there home town ethics
Wow, feel like a fly on the wall next to two musicians who's work I admire. Don has a great memory and his thumb is on the pulse of the people (typical with great musicians). His assessment of our current detrimental collective conscience condition is spot-on in my book (from 30:50 to 31:45). Big part of the reason their music speaks to people from what I can tell. Thanks for taking the time to share gentlemen.
Wow. This was truly an EXCEPTIONAL interview. And what a great combo. I had no idea Joel and Henley were friends! Joel was such a great interviewer as well, never getting in the way, and allowing Don to really get it all out. I learned so much from watching this video, including how he met Glenn Frey. "Nothing happens by accident." Thanks again for this phenomenal video. P.S. Just a funny memory. When the Eagles wrote, "Best Of My Love," when my 5-year old niece told me that it made her cry, I was astounded. It made me cry, too!! When I asked her why it made her cry, however, she said, "It reminds me of my hamster, who just died." That's great writing:)
Fantastic interview, never imagined these two greats talking to each other on stage for so long! Good to learn more about Mr Henley's background, and what influenced him.
Music is something that unites us all !! We all like different music and some of us like lots of different music ! These two guys have done all kinds of music you can see the the respect they have for each other ,great interview .
Dixie Land Jazz? No wonder he has so much depth. Playing sophisticated music, with adults. It's no wonder the Eagles were never tripped out, psychedelic, but singer-songwriter. I saw the History of the Eagles tour with Glen, and was blown away! Glen's and Don's voice were literally perfect. Most people start to sound old and worn out by 65. The Eagles was the best concert I ever saw, aside from Merle Haggard with the Strangers (basically a country big band). Merle spared no expense, even though it was a county fair! Like Merle, Don is about integrity. Regardless of what Robin Crosby has said about the Eagles.
Henley is right on about the non-categorization of music in the old days. The old AM radio would play Perry Como, The Supremes, Johnny Cash, The Stones, all in the same half hour
One evening I was hanging with Bob Seger and we ended up back at his house with some friends. Bob put on some music and it was Henley. I was standing next to Bob and with no prompting for me said: "Henley is one of the best song writers ever."
Man, for some reason I feel like wanting this man never dies. I have so much respect and admiration for him that a think a music without him loses its purpose
Arguably One of the best Music introspects that I have ever heard, Priceless, So compelling & enthralling! Both Legends really nailed it & are one spectrum from one another
Just because Henley is worth millions doesn't mean he doesn't care about or understand the working man's plight, or the struggle of a musician trying to making a living writing and/or performing. Famous people were once working class and struggling. Henley does a lot for his hometown and a lot for musicians who get screwed by confusing and constantly changing copyright laws.
+Colm Brennan First of all, BMI and ASCAP pay a whole lot better than streaming services these days, which leads to: 2) Henley's a millionaire primarily because of being a songwriter. He was paid for radio play, record sales and songwriting/publishing royalties. And, he was an artist in the time of PHYSICAL copies in various medium--album, single, tape, CD. They don't see it the same way with number of plays on Spotify, etc. You are screwed as an artist in the digital age.
Neither of these men " understand" the plight of people who have to work for a low wage their entire lives. Very few people are as gifted as these men in music to make a fortune from it.
I work at Lowe's as a cashier after early retirement from Lockheed Martin. Don't really want to talk to people after I get off of work, since I talk to people all day. @@billferrell7740 yeah who would have thought
Don's got the lyrics, Billy's got the melodies. Make a damn album together!!
Yeah I would love that.
Billy hasn't wrote a song in decennia..
Sirius XM channel 76 periodically plays Billy Joel piano sonatas!
Billy already has fabulous lyrics. Even though a collab would be awesome.
Are you kidding me now they're both great songwriters Billy Joel writes phenomenal lyrics you must not know his library of music
Don Henley is a very interesting person! His perspective on things is so encouraging, and so humble.
Very bright very talented, bit of an arse and a control freak.
Can you imagine how many people would want to collaborate with Billy Joel or Don Henley? Just every musician and songwriter in the world.
Billy was a wonderful host. Two remarkable artists.
What Don Henley has done to save Walden Woods is absolutely amazing.
This is one of the best interviews I have ever seen. Both of these guys are my heroes. To me they both do Americana music, which is dear to me.
Billy Joel and Don Henley are amazing! I love their music! They are two of my favorites!
Hank Machuga Very cool, thank you for sharing this!

I cannot believe Don’s voice speaking is so low and this vocals are so incredibly high. What a talent. Great man and artist.
He also lacks ANY soul while telling a story. But his singing voice is just insane.
I totally agree!! That was my first thought as well!
Right?? How?? Jeez I’d love to hit those high notes he sings!
@@MrPrice2U I find his story telling very soothing.

the best interviews i have heard are one legendary musician asking another musician questions. They just get it
Fascinating conversation between two musical legends.
What a lovely conversation between two intelligent and thoughtful gentlemen.❤
And 8 years later Billy Joel does in fact write a masterpiece ❤
This is the first time I have ever listened to Don Henley giving an introspective interview. He's a thoughtful and considerate individual and extremely talented man. Thanks to Billy Joel and Don Henley for doing this.
I just caught this tonight. As I read the comments, yours Thor, are just about what I was going to say and more. A very enjoyable storytelling interview like I have never heard before from Don. Wonderful! 😊
LOVE BOTH OF THESE LEGENDS!! Fascinating conversation, interesting history on both their parts. JOEL & HENLEY are so REAL, down to earth.
Don Henley is very introspective and a pure genius. He gets totally lost in his thoughts. I love the sound of his voice whether speaking or singing .
like Jeff Porcaro, the drummer of TOTO speaks in a serious voice.
What Don says about Dolly Parton starting at the 34:15 mark just about brought me to tears. What a beautiful description of her voice.
thegorn68 100% agree. Never heard a better description. Nails it like only a poet can.
And how she said she "had to rare back and get it." And then left the hospital to do a video only to return to the hospital after. That's one tough lady as well.
His respect for her is phenomenal! It was a musician's respect for another musician, so eloquently spoken!
Gave me chills listening to it, so beautiful
I saw the Eagles in their Hell Freezes Over tour, 1994. It was INCREDIBLE! I could still be sitting there enjoying their music from them to now.
I was in the front row when Don Henley played Red Rocks in 1985 (Katrina and the Waves opened for him). And then I also saw the Eagles in Denver when they got back together in the mid-90s.
An uplifting interview .. an unexpected treat.
It's refreshing to see Henley...a thoughtful quiet reserved...a measured rock star who's introverted
Great to hear these two legends talking about their life experiences
I love the honesty and the humble way Billy and Don share.
LOL - and the funny part is, those are two words (especially "humble") that you would never associate with Henley!! 😅
Both of these guys are two of the best songwriters ever. Think two great examples are "End of the innocence" by Don Henley. And "Leningrad" by Billy Joel. Lyrics that can reach your soul and help you reflect on your own life's experiences.
I love what Don says about Dolly Parton's voice, because he absolutely nailed it.
I agree. Dolly is a National Treasure for a myriad of reasons.
Thanks for all the music and all that you contributed to society thank you.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸🎼🎶🎵🎸☮️
Don Felder wrote the music for "Hotel California."
I could listen to these 2 talk for weeks!
Henley's memory and recall is unbelievable.
I hold so much love and respect for Don Henley! A man of great intelligence and has not forgot his roots. That great bluesy voice can still wail and one of the great lyricists. I do hope that Don and Billy collaborate at some point.
Love his reference to ‘The Mothership’. Shows that he is a really genuine guy. Great job Billy!
Cool. Two of America's premier song writers and entertainers! Appreciated the accolade to Glen Campbell - one of the most talented, ever!
I have listened to this interview several times just because I like the sound of Don Henley's voice.
How is Dons voice so deep, yet he sings in such a higher pitch? Crazy.
Dino Pappous I know Randy and Timothys voices were higher and what songs they sang. Don still sings in a higher octave.
@@palmsquad4 ...Don is an attention seeker...plain and simple...treated band mates like crap
Dino Pappous what’s that have to do with his voice. I’m a huge eagles fan. I know a lot about the band. I’m making an observation about his voice.
Saw with both of these guys, Billy in 1979 and the Eagles in 2014, Greatest concerts ever.
He has such a great memory! All these radio stations he remembers!
I live in the area and he is spot on!
@@MichaelFontana081153 From personal experience, it's tougher playing bass guitar and singing.
Always loved Henley. An articulate and thoughtful person. Thanks 92Y for sharing this for free to all.
Jay Ryan Kamins how can you say that??
Love Don Henley, too. Not only for the incredible music he has created BUT for his environmental concerns with the Walden Woods Project. Our family shares his concern in the future ahead.....and we grew up similarly to him, small town in Pa..... with so many changes in the past few decades. We pray everyday for our children & their future . Thank you, Don Henley, Carry on.... Eric & Gwen Hull
@ ....I find him rather "douschey" .....
Henley is a pompous ass.
Billy Joel? A natural
What a wonderful, informative, intelligent interview between two beautiful souls.
Love Billy Joel.....He did a Great Job interviewing Don Henley.
Don Henley, considered, patient and articulate, thanks for the Music, stay well, regards from England.
I adore Don Henely I have followed him and his music my whole life. He is and will always be my all time favorite!!! Billy Joel is also a very talented artist and I love his music also!!
Lovely conversation. Thanks to the team whom have all contributed to this endeavor.
CLASSIC!
Agree, the Desperado album is strangely overlooked/underrated.
In my oh so humble opinion I think Desperado is their very best song! Any song that gives you an "emotion" is always terrific!

His assessment of our current detrimental collective conscience condition is spot-on in my book (from 30:50 to 31:45). Big part of the reason their music speaks to people from what I can tell. Thanks for taking the time to share gentlemen.
Hey, Tyler Texas here. Out of all the absolutely great music from the Eagles, 7 Bridges holds a special place in my heart. Thanks guys.

So many great memories from both of their talents...lovely.
Wonderful interview. I learned much about Henley that really makes me appreciate him more than ever.
Go online..try stations like WLNG out of sag Harbor NY...still "keeping it real"...since 1963. Its free to listen and easy. Check them out.
Yeah, now most categories are filled with junk, country, pop, whatever,it’s mostly worthless junk.
I think the wide variety that everyone was exposed to produced a commonality, an appreciation and respect for all types of music that is missing now.
Two of my musical hero's, realising we all get old. I am still stuck in the last century.

Love both these gentlemen!
Just because Henley is worth millions doesn't mean he doesn't care about or understand the working man's plight, or the struggle of a musician trying to making a living writing and/or performing. Famous people were once working class and struggling. Henley does a lot for his hometown and a lot for musicians who get screwed by confusing and constantly changing copyright laws.
the small musicisan gets diddly squat from BMI and ASCAP. HENLEY gets MILLIONS .
+Colm Brennan First of all, BMI and ASCAP pay a whole lot better than streaming services these days, which leads to:
2) Henley's a millionaire primarily because of being a songwriter. He was paid for radio play, record sales and songwriting/publishing royalties. And, he was an artist in the time of PHYSICAL copies in various medium--album, single, tape, CD. They don't see it the same way with number of plays on Spotify, etc. You are screwed as an artist in the digital age.
Do you have access to his contract? Why do you think The Eagles toured so much?
Much like jackasses who download For FREE his/their (the eagles) music.
