- Don Henley and Billy Joel, true American rock royalty, have remained friends throughout their careers.
Joel even sang at Henley’s wedding, while Henley showed his admiration by performing at Joel’s Kennedy Center Honors. Now these two music legends are set to make a rare public appearance together, when Joel moderates a conversation with Henley at 92Y. Hear them talk about their lives, their careers and about Henley’s Cass County, his first solo album in 15 years, a musical return to his roots.

In case Howard Stern is watching, this is how you let your guest speak for more than 5 seconds without interrupting him.
Ahahahaha, I know, rgt? Ha!
@@orlando696 Yeah, rudeness is such arrogance.
In OTHER words, Howard Stern needs to learn some manners?
@@christopherfewell8563 what has happened to billy joels face, he looks all distorted? did he have accident so sad 😢
@@orlando696 I agree Mr Orlando. I had the package with SiriusXM that had all channels. I stepped down to the package below which takes Stern out because it was tiring listen to him constantly cutting his guests off with his interruptions. He appears to interject because he wants the guest to understand it's HIS show and HE is more important than anything.
I like his line, “we’re all standing on the shoulders of somebody “.
We should all keep that in mind more often.
Except drummers - they're sitting

Don Henley has aged phenomenally well and his singing voice still sounds the same. Billy is such a classy guy. Two music icons and true gentlemen.
@@markusaurelius777 you could only wish to look half that good at nearly 70 yrs old (68 at the time of this interview)

How is Billy classy?
Just stop touching your nose! LMAO Love Don
Henley is a douche bag
The sheer intelligence of Don Henley still amazes me. Just a worldly man
The tragedy of our time is most young people do not understand how historic this conversation is and how historic these two guys are. The humility and wisdom is gob smackingly surreal. I was 7 to 9 when I discovered these guys in 1976 - 1978. Thanks for the memories. My parents divorced in 1978 and so your music was blues for me and still is because when you're that young you can't process grief properly so it stays with you. Listening to these guys play, I'm always full of emotion and I'm glad of it.
The only thing I can disagree with here is the lack of a hyohen between gob and smackingly 😄😉. Beautiful, what you wrote. Thanks!
Oh, we do, we definitely do. I'll add meeting the Moody Blues in person as a highlight to my life given the few generations between us.
Don's got the lyrics, Billy's got the melodies. Make a damn album together!!
Yeah I would love that.
Billy hasn't wrote a song in decennia..
Sirius XM channel 76 periodically plays Billy Joel piano sonatas!
Billy already has fabulous lyrics. Even though a collab would be awesome.
Are you kidding me now they're both great songwriters Billy Joel writes phenomenal lyrics you must not know his library of music
And 8 years later Billy Joel does in fact write a masterpiece ❤
You can tell that Billy Joel isn't a professional interviewer by the fact that he lets Don Henley talk and finish.
he seems an all around classy guy, except for the drinking, of course
Such a great interview. Billy Joel has something Stern will never have: self respect & respect for his guest! That is all it takes to interview well! Vulgarity is obviously not necessary!

Billy Joel & Don Henley are two of the giants of American music and have made some of the best music I still listen to today !

I love how he's always so humble & appreciative of another chance to wow his fans!! His voice has not changed. With all the smoking

If you saw how he treated some band members you might rethink that...
@@Grundig305 everyone has bad days
@@Grundig305 I’ve heard pretty nasty stories of typical cokehead and drunken behavior also besides what happend to his bass player. But he’s a great artist and looks quite humble here
How is Dons voice so deep, yet he sings in such a higher pitch? Crazy.
Don really has a difficult time singing with his regular voice and he forces a raspy type soulish voice that allows him to hit the notes that the songs are written in and it works really well. The Eagles spent a lot of time making sure that their voices harmonized.
His voice is not that high....Randy Meisner, who Henley and Frey alienated from the band, was the one who hit the high notes ( Take it to the Limit) and later Timothy B Schmidt hit the high notes....as usual, Henley given credit where it ISN'T DUE !!!
Dino Pappous I know Randy and Timothys voices were higher and what songs they sang. Don still sings in a higher octave.
@@palmsquad4 ...Don is an attention seeker...plain and simple...treated band mates like crap
Dino Pappous what’s that have to do with his voice. I’m a huge eagles fan. I know a lot about the band. I’m making an observation about his voice.
Billy was a wonderful host. Two remarkable artists.
Don Henley is a very interesting person! His perspective on things is so encouraging, and so humble.
It doesn't sound like he has a whole lot of humility in reality. gradually pushed Felder's share down to a third of his on some of the things they were releasing during their big second run in the 90s and 2000s. When felder didn't agree, they said "he was bad for band chemistry" and kicked him out. Every time Henley talks, he can't resist complaining about not getting his fair share of money every time any of their music is used online.
@@daw162 you could not know with any certainty. Are you Felders brother? Maybe Henley is an ass, maybe Felder is, or maybe they both have their own version. Finally who cares? Rhonda said he’s interesting to her and encouraging. Don’t shit on her opinion because you think you know something.
Very bright very talented, bit of an arse and a control freak.
Henley's memory and recall is unbelievable.
Two unaffected, approachable, people-loving artists. A breath of fresh air.
I laughed when Don Henley said that now he feels a little more comfortable calling himself a songwriter, because I've always thought of him as a great songwriter. Many of his lyrics have expressed the feelings at the center of my heart so well. His song "Heart of the Matter" brought a lot of healing to me years after my parents divorce.
A lot of his lyrics are very cynical but very pragmatic. I loved his solo stuff
Marc Sawatzki definitely agree
How about Don Henley's "Forgiveness"? Reminds me of my ex-wife. I blew it, told her so and asked her for forgiveness, but she hates me even after 40 years.
Same, Long Road out of Eden has so many songs that spoke to me at the time, and still do.
when i listen to that song it reminds me of my parents divorce.....& MY divorce....but it is a GREAT song and Henley HEALS!!!
I saw this interview with Billy and Don when it first came out and was immediately captivated from the first second to the last. So glad to have just bumped into it again and been able to soak up every single word from these two titans of music. As a drummer myself as well as singer and keyboard player,Don Henley has been my idol from the moment I heard him for the first time with the Eagles and all throughout his solo career. I don’t usually put people on a pedestal and I have many artists who I admire and love such as Billy. But, Don Henley has such an incredible voice and god given talent as a lyricist, drummer, scholar etc that I have always had the highest respect and admiration for him and the contributions he has given to the music world. He is truly amongst the select few artists who will be remembered as the greatest singers of all time. Marvin Gaye ,Robert Plant ,Don Henley and a few others. Thanks for the soundtrack of my life 🙏🫶❤

What Don says about Dolly Parton starting at the 34:15 mark just about brought me to tears. What a beautiful description of her voice.

And how she said she "had to rare back and get it." And then left the hospital to do a video only to return to the hospital after. That's one tough lady as well.
His respect for her is phenomenal! It was a musician's respect for another musician, so eloquently spoken!
Gave me chills listening to it, so beautiful
Don Henley's intelligence shines whenever he opens his mouth (singing or in interviews with him), there's no fool to prove here. He is well-rounded, and so well-spoken. His parents must have been brilliant as well (genius in the genes).

It’s amazing how smart and sharp Don is to this day , he’s one of my fav esp when the Eagles had Glen Frye, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Randy Meisner, to me that’s the greatest band ever.
There is no surprise Don Henley was/is a success. This man is full of wisdom. Yes these 2 should collaborate.
Don Henley is very introspective and a pure genius. He gets totally lost in his thoughts. I love the sound of his voice whether speaking or singing .
like Jeff Porcaro, the drummer of TOTO speaks in a serious voice.
I cannot believe Don’s voice speaking is so low and this vocals are so incredibly high. What a talent. Great man and artist.
He also lacks ANY soul while telling a story. But his singing voice is just insane.
I totally agree!! That was my first thought as well!

Can you imagine how many people would want to collaborate with Billy Joel or Don Henley? Just every musician and songwriter in the world.
Billy Joel and Don Henley are amazing! I love their music! They are two of my favorites!
I was drawn to this interview because the Eagles have always been my all-time favorite band. At 15, I fell in love with both my first husband and the Eagle’s! I’m 62 now and although my first marriage didn’t last, my love for the Eagle’s music has never left my heart! I knew Don Henley was an intelligent man but I had no idea just how intelligent. His memory of events from his childhood and name’s of people who effected his career blew me away! At 62 I can remember event’s that happened throughout my life but my short term memory is fading. Don appears to have total recall and I was very impressed with his knowledge of the past. For a man that has achieved great accomplishments and stardom, I found him to be very humble and genuine.
What a lovely conversation between two intelligent and thoughtful gentlemen.❤
Billy did a great job and Don is very articulate and intelligent...this was great great fun ...very entertaining.
Has to stop picking at his nose though. I love him, but I have heard people who have been in his company say, he's smug.

This is one of the best interviews I have ever seen. Both of these guys are my heroes. To me they both do Americana music, which is dear to me.
An uplifting interview .. an unexpected treat.
Love Billy Joel.....He did a Great Job interviewing Don Henley.
I love the honesty and the humble way Billy and Don share.
LOL - and the funny part is, those are two words (especially "humble") that you would never associate with Henley!! 😅
Don Henley is like a sage of music here. Billy Joel seems in awe of him.
I think they both are in awe of each other, they are both genius.
He has such a great memory! All these radio stations he remembers!
I live in the area and he is spot on!
Both of these guys are two of the best songwriters ever. Think two great examples are "End of the innocence" by Don Henley. And "Leningrad" by Billy Joel. Lyrics that can reach your soul and help you reflect on your own life's experiences.
I could sit and listen to Don Henley talk all night long. I know some people through knee jerk reactions like to lambast him, but he is truly a National Original and a National Treasure. So erudite, witty and generous. I feel each time I listen to him that I am a better person afterwards.
Also hats off to Billy Joel for being one of the most engaging hosts imaginable. One who knows that being an interviewer means being the prompt then getting out of the way. Bravo!
amen to that
Henley is right on about the non-categorization of music in the old days. The old AM radio would play Perry Como, The Supremes, Johnny Cash, The Stones, all in the same half hour
Go online..try stations like WLNG out of sag Harbor NY...still "keeping it real"...since 1963. Its free to listen and easy. Check them out.
Yeah, now most categories are filled with junk, country, pop, whatever,it’s mostly worthless junk.
I think the wide variety that everyone was exposed to produced a commonality, an appreciation and respect for all types of music that is missing now.
the best interviews i have heard are one legendary musician asking another musician questions. They just get it
It is April 15, 2020. I'm thankful for 92Y, and especially Billy and Don. I watched this during a hard night of being alone. Sometimes you never know who you will touch by doing the ordinary

I have always felt that the Eagles “Desperado” album was their best. It was their second album and was not received well from the critics. It tells a story all the way through from the first track to the end. Kind of like a rock opera with a old western story line. My favorite track is the last. The Doolin Dalton/ Desparado reprise. CLASSIC!
Agree, the Desperado album is strangely overlooked/underrated.
In my oh so humble opinion I think Desperado is their very best song! Any song that gives you an "emotion" is always terrific!

The Eagles have always been a much loved band in our household. My mom's favorite song was Take it to the Limit. She passed just before covid hit but this song will always remind me of her. My favorite Henley song is Heart of the Matter. Ironically a song my ex-husband and I always had playing in the car before we ended up divorced.
I am very familiar with all the Eagles, past and present and all the talent that has encompassed this legendary band BUT I never really listened to any interviews or know too much about them aside from their tremendous musical gifts. I heard stories about Henley and always assumed he wasn't very nice. He always looks so stern and serious, a bit angry even... Well I am soooo glad I listened to this interview and now have a whole other perception!
Henley is very introspective and deep. He also shows wonderful thought and consideration for others. He is not only a great song writer and talent, his voice is beautiful.
Great interview!!
After seeing this video. I think a lot more of Don Henley than I used to. Dan Hatley seems to be a very cool person. I always loved the Eagles. Being a solo instrumental, guitaris . Don Felder wrote the music for "Hotel California."
What a terrific interview! I've never had a chance to hear the Eagles or Don Henley in concert, but I did have a chance to see Billy Joel at a concert at a small community college in NJ in the mid 70's. What a show! These 2 are true icons in the music world.
I was 16 when I took my mom to an Eagles concert in 76'.. Their encore song was Hotel California, months before it was released!.. yea.. so much more to say but. yea.. good old days..
I saw the Eagles in their Hell Freezes Over tour, 1994. It was INCREDIBLE! I could still be sitting there enjoying their music from them to now.
I was in the front row when Don Henley played Red Rocks in 1985 (Katrina and the Waves opened for him). And then I also saw the Eagles in Denver when they got back together in the mid-90s.
I have new respect for Don after hearing his story. I grew up listening to Glen Campbell and Buck Owens. And being a drummer that finally learned how song and play I FEEL HIM when he explained how hard that is. Cheers Don!!
I think there are only a few people in the history of this planet who could both play drums and sing well, both live and professionally. He is among those very few.
@@MichaelFontana081153 From personal experience, it's tougher playing bass guitar and singing.
@@leekosmin8788 I find it virtually impossible, although if I just play the root notes, and the song is simple, I can manage it. Drumming, on the other hand, is physically draining. Don Henley and Phil Collins, both fabulous singers and drummers. I was so beyond impressed when I first realized they were doing both simultaneously.
And Karen Carpenter.
Don Henley was standing next to me when I said to him; "Mr. Henley, I've chosen your campaign to save Walden as the topic of my term paper this semester." Well, THAT got his interest! He showed a great level of sincerity in wanting to help me find sources for my research on the paper. Even as he was being pulled away by his entourage her turned to find me just to say; "Good luck on your paper." Don, and Billy, I'm sure you've heard some version of this before. I'm 59 years old. Your music helped me define my life, when I was a teenager and after. When music is so profound, that the listener, with little imagination, can see themselves in the situation you sing about, and it brings comfort, and understanding, at a youthful time in our lives, when nothing else does, then that's much more than important. I want to say, God Blessed both of you guys, but God blessed the public that enjoys and relates to your music, even more. Thank You, so much.
Love his reference to ‘The Mothership’. Shows that he is a really genuine guy. Great job Billy!
Dixie Land Jazz? No wonder he has so much depth. Playing sophisticated music, with adults. It's no wonder the Eagles were never tripped out, psychedelic, but singer-songwriter. I saw the History of the Eagles tour with Glen, and was blown away! Glen's and Don's voice were literally perfect. Most people start to sound old and worn out by 65. The Eagles was the best concert I ever saw, aside from Merle Haggard with the Strangers (basically a country big band). Merle spared no expense, even though it was a county fair! Like Merle, Don is about integrity. Regardless of what Robin Crosby has said about the Eagles.
Wow! One of the best interviews ever! My favorite musicians together!!!

In my favorite episode of ITAS, James Lipton interviews a very engaged, very animated Billy Joel. When he introduced a song-writing concept he didn't _explain_ it, he jumped out of his chair, hustled to the piano, and demonstrated with an example from one of his own hits.
It was a revelation. I'd loved music since I could breathe but I didn't have a clue where it came from. And here Billy was showing us his secret process.
Thank you for that, Billy Joel. I'll always love you.

Wow. This was truly an EXCEPTIONAL interview. And what a great combo. I had no idea Joel and Henley were friends! Joel was such a great interviewer as well, never getting in the way, and allowing Don to really get it all out. I learned so much from watching this video, including how he met Glenn Frey. "Nothing happens by accident." Thanks again for this phenomenal video.
P.S. Just a funny memory. When the Eagles wrote, "Best Of My Love," when my 5-year old niece told me that it made her cry, I was astounded. It made me cry, too!! When I asked her why it made her cry, however, she said, "It reminds me of my hamster, who just died." That's great writing:)

I hold so much love and respect for Don Henley! A man of great intelligence and has not forgot his roots. That great bluesy voice can still wail and one of the great lyricists. I do hope that Don and Billy collaborate at some point.
Bill does so well in these interview story telling sessions, I'd love it for him to host a weekly show where he'd interview song writers from the past 50 years or so. He does great on his college lecture tours, so I really think interviewing the greats would be right up his alley!! Looks like he won't be ever putting out any new material for an album, the sold out arenas will be get boring for him I imagine...so in his retirement years interview the greats would be just so informative, oh well....I can dream!
its not too surprising that he's great at these types of settings. he does have an honorary doctorate in humanities.
he had a great channel on sirius, for far to short a time, where he did a lot of that and told a lot of stories about where his songs come from, and what they're really about, it was wonderful, I really hate that it's gone

And Dolly is awesome squared. And this is a tremendous interview.
In the summer of 1994 I saw the following concerts at Giants Stadium - The Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Elton John and Billy Joel -- four separate shows - friends with a top ticket broker - we sat first row center for the Stones, 4th row center for the Eagles, 8th row for Billy and Elton -- hands down the best sounding band was The Eagles, was not even close - as a band, lead and harmony vocals and overall musicianship The Eagles were on another level -- Billy and Elton put on a great show and their bands were very good, the Stones were sloppy and phoned it in that night - I will never forget that three hour show the Eagles performed that night and how impressed i was by the collective sound they make in concert - incredible!
Lucky duck! I agree w/you on your great & honest reviews of all these classic concerts. And here it is: April 2024....& away we go again.....
