- Directors Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi, subject David Johansen, Executive Producer Mara Hennessey, producer Margaret Bodde, and Leah Hennessey (who conducted the film's interviews) discuss Personality Crisis: One Night Only, an NYFF60 Spotlight Selection, with NYFF Programmer Dan Sullivan.
Continuing his vibrant and invaluable documentaries about iconic American artists and musicians such as George Harrison: Living in the Material World, No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, and the Fran Lebowitz portrait Public Speaking, Martin Scorsese turns his camera on another beloved New York institution: the singular David Johansen. Equally celebrated as the lead singer-songwriter of the androgynous ’70s glam punk groundbreakers The New York Dolls and for his complete reinvention as hepcat lounge lizard Buster Poindexter in the ’80s, the chameleonic Johansen has created an entire genre unto himself, combining swing, blues, and rock for something at once mischievous and deeply personal. In Personality Crisis: One Night Only, Scorsese and co-director David Tedeschi (The 50 Year Argument), with the help of cinematographer Ellen Kuras (American Utopia), luminously capture the entertainer’s January 2020 Cafe Carlyle set, where he performs as Poindexter singing the Johansen songbook, bringing downtown irreverence to this storied uptown joint. Presented alongside new and archival interviews, the concert is marvelously intimate and a testament to both a lost New York and a performer who remains as fresh and exciting as ever. A Showtime release.
All NYFF60 documentaries are sponsored by HBO.

I loved the movie "Personality Crisis". I watched it several times last night. It's awesome, I highly recommend it. David is totally a New Yorker !!! I love you David. I did not know that Johnny Thunder died (1991) in my town, New Orleans, until today. I also didn't know that Sylvain Sylvain died in 2021. Kane, Nolan, they're all gone, R.I.P. It sucks being old because you see all of your loved ones disappear from the planet. What a drag it is getting old.
I’m so happy that this all came together. David’s life story is better than any movie I’ve ever seen.
Marty looks so great for his age.
Marty should make two movies from books- Five Finger Discount and I, Jan Cremer. 17:16 It's hilarious that Mercer st center collapsed and it was headquarters for NYC Construction union.,
Scorsese' first film, The Last Waltz with The Band
Which one's Pink?
Harvey Fierstein has the voice play him
Nothing about the Diplomat Hotel on west 43rd street and David playing at that kick ass spot!
David looks tired. I'm glad came across this. Just watch my annual viewing of Scrooged.
You have no idea my friend. 🙏
Awwww might be not doing well possibly...I wondered...
15:07 Who are the directors - besides Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas - that Scorsese names?
Adolfas Mekas
and Ed Emshwiller
Yeah, Martin is a great director. He would great if he for once in his movies be positive about black people...
There we have it, the moralist comment geezer.
@@myfalsenamedotcome Oh don't worry, this was not a woke comment.
You gotta tell that to wvery filmaker that portrays black people ina negative light. Talk to Ice Cube
He didn't do a positive for white people either, most of his films are about White gangster and their evil deeds
Maybe he cares more about realistic film making than appeasing you PC Stormtroopers...
