Thank you Tom! I sure hope so, Cedars are one of my favourite species of trees. I think they could make really smart credible bonsai one day! My original layers should be ready for first style next year 😊
Thank you GG, well deciduous plants won’t work now! But the cedar and juniper I have in pots seem to get a good head start AirLayering early! Of course I can move undercover if weather become to bad wet and cold! The cedar can take serval years to get going! Il share my process as we go 🌱
Thanks for sharing Niles. Is that shrink wrap or something a bit thicker you're using at 26:30 please? I've got the same tree but about six feet tall and instead of doing a trunk chop, I may as well do a couple of air layers. Nothing to lose.
Hey Mike, I use Shirnk wrap they use on pallets ect or the kitchen variety which sometimes is a little tamer to use but not as strong! You can use flower pots and wrap with thicker plastic like compost bag. I find as long as you can make a big enough moss ball for an effective layer shrink wrap keep moisture in and rain out well! Iv featured this cedars airlayers in a recent tour video. The Himalayan cedar has roots!
Fascinating stuff, Niles. We really enjoy the linger form videos. It's basically surgery you're performing. The Blue Cedar looks a lot like what we call Blue Spruce here in Canada. I'm a contrarian at heart so I can't wait to this in future 🤞😁 Excellent!!
Thank you guys! Haha very much so but learning to graft properly would be my graduation to a surgeon in the field! These are very similar in colour to your blue spruce. How the needles form/present on cedars I think will make really attractive bonsai! Love blue spruce my brother has some nice ones kicking about il feature in a tour at some point 😊🌱
Great video bud. I've got a red maple in my garden about 6' high. Branches are about 1" thick. When can I air layer a branch off it and how long does it take?
Thanks Kevin, It’s exactly the same principle, expect you’ll want to wait until the first flush of grow starts to harden off at least! I think red maples can be very tricky to airlayer maybe abit like the cedar the internet Will generally say no! I think bloodgood maybe unhappy on its own roots! Have a little read up 🌱
I have a deodore and a blue atlas that I could air layer I did see your last video that gave me the idea to do it.. but how long did it take before you split the air layer..? Cheers
Hi Rob, I achieved air layers of atlas blue cedars in around 2-3 seasons ( not a commercially viable process I’m sure) however you can select nice movement and avoid grafts! The deodore Cedars I’ve got cuttings to root in the first season. so I’d assume layers will work in 2 second year and less stubborn at a guess! Thanks for Watching 🌱
Cheers Tony! None of these are air layers there all my stock plants as such! My previous layers are resting up I did explain in the video! Although in my experience layers of layers can work well!

Thanks Nilly. I’ve got a blue alps cedar that I intend to air layer but didn’t think you can do it now. I’m going to have a go. 🤞that I’m successful 😀

Love that atlas blue cedar mate. Do you think that it will be a problem air layering an air layer so soon after it was removed from the main tree?
Cheers Tony! None of these are air layers there all my stock plants as such! My previous layers are resting up I did explain in the video! Although in my experience layers of layers can work well!
What time of the year is it good to air layer a cedar???
Iv just uploaded a new video on AirLayering tips and cedars are a big part of it worth a watch.
