mine are 43 years old..and im 74 years old now used to go to greenwood to buy heathers of corin/pauls mum and dad.they had the shed then...there were bonsai for sale there as well. bough bonsai from greenwood over the years used to go to the club in nottingham..cannot belive how long ive been looking after my display so nice to see how greenwood has grown over the years.. love the fact corin does the channel now..
With the first tree, I'd probably cut off the thick long ones and keep the short tiny growth to make the tree more "fluffy" at the initial stage, so that I would have thiner branches against a thicker trunk later. But I'm a hobbyist with, like, 10 trees at most
It's been a while since I stopped in the comment section just to say how much I do admire your work on these cedars. So I got this very young atlas cedar growing in a rock planter. I'm in zone 7, didn't do any work on it other then putting it in the planter. It's needles are going a bit reddish. It was about to bud when winter hit and buds kinda stopped at that point. It's location is in a full sun and it has well draining soil. Is there anything I can do to ensure it's winter survival? I know it's a guessing game at this point to wait for spring but any kind of knowledge you can spare will gladly be appreciated.
Corin, here in the states blue atlas cedars are equally hard to find and the graft unions are usually nowhere as good as the ones you showed. I have been searching garden centers for years to find a decent one and finally got lucky last October and it is now awaiting styling this spring. We tend to see a lot of them grown as cascade or semi-cascade trees which can aid in hiding any swelling of the base.
@@christymartin6281 Are you asking me or Corin? I would not do it unless you have a greenhouse or other location where you can keep the tree above freezing afterwards. Once you start working the tree, depending on what you do, you may bring it out of dormancy too early for it to survive. Once they break dormancy their hardiness is greatly diminished and these are only zone 6/7 hardiness to begin with. That is why I do not plan to start on mine until March and I am in zone 7b.
I would love to see you do a cascade style bonsai with one of those tall blue atlas cedars. its kind of a shame to waste half the tree with common upright/semi upright styles.
There is a UA-camr who has had a little success air layering them but it can take 2-3 years and the success rate is low so most production is by grafting onto either the green variety or onto deodar cedar rootstock.
Great video, Corin, when potting in this way or even using a faster draining substrate, do you water when the original soil dictates or the "new" one? Thanks
It’s 2:30 AM here in the USA. Couldn’t sleep, so relaxing by seeing your great bonsai work. Didn’t expect a response in 2 minutes! Forgot to thank you for all your help and great videos. Can the top be air layered to make another tree? Think I may want to try, if it is not a nightmare or years to produce roots. Mine is too tall from the nursery like yours, but it has an interesting top.
dear master greenwood, i asked u about the demo trees u wanted to do on yt cause covid got in the way. u said its christmas time, wait til january. that was a year ago. im still sittin desperately in front of my pc hitting that refresh button but those promised demo trees never showed up on your channel. i thought about doin other things but i just cant let go. pls make those videos and release me from that painful waiting!
If these came from Esveld nursery, does that mean these are Cedrus Libani subspecies atlantica? So much confusion around these species and things that look alike… Great video either way, thanks so much 🙏🏼
Hello from Romania , werry nice and informative video as usual . I like your vids and love your style . Any updates about that large semicascade blue atlas cedar you bought in automn
thanks a lot! :) have a field, will plant last year's seedlings to the ground this spring, then i will dig them up about 5-6 years. Lets see! @@greenwoodbonsaistudio

I love how, while working so quickly, you clearly explain your decision making with each action you take. It is wonderfully instructive!
Its been awhile since your last uoload. Always good day when Corin is working on a Cedar!
I enjoy these style videos with nursery stock and lots of pruning!

Do you think it's too early to work on one here? I'm in northern Colorado, Zone 5-A?

hard to find in Australia too. fetching high prices as a result.

Just when it needs it, I didnt leave too much old soil, majority is new.
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio thank you for the reply, 👍
Очень хочется увидеть дальнейшую судьбу этих растений)
Looking for blue atlas material for ages will there be any for sale on the website?
Bought a Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar variety. Is this going to work for Bonsai the same as yours, or should I return it for a more upright variety?
Should make an interesting tree

Yes, I had planned to do that, I worked on them at our event, but Josh was so busy with customers he didn't manage to get chance to film them.
:O does that mean i will never ever see those demos??? im shocked, i wasted a whole year waiting@@greenwoodbonsaistudio
Good job. Can cut branches be re-rooted?
They don't root well from cuttings, thats why they are produced by grafting
If these came from Esveld nursery, does that mean these are Cedrus Libani subspecies atlantica? So much confusion around these species and things that look alike…

only Cedars species are - Atlantica, Libani, Brevifolia and Deodar. These are Atlantica 'Gauca'
@@greenwoodbonsaistudio Thanks! They're really high up on my wishlist. Can't wait to get started on mine and watch it grow majestic over the years ^_^
Will you be putting them on the website Corin ?
They will be for sale at nursery in a few weeks, will get a selection on website also. Want to make sure they don't needle drop.
Can’t wait to buy one!!
Are these on the web site to purchase ,if so price
Not yet. We are waiting for them to settle in before we offer them for sale
Grafts are frustrating! Is it possible to do an air layer to eliminate them from view?
Usually trees are grafted as they grow better and stronger when grafted over being on "their own roots"
Have you tried or know someone who has air-layered a blue atlas cedar?
