    Thanks for the video Ben old school GM mechanic over 50 years. Did tuneup on 99 Escalade they left distributor loose last time it moved on me when installing new cap and rotor wires. Got finished started right up but then kicked a camshaft and crankshaft Coalition code. Set it like the video now is dead on timing great video

    You know, I had an old college auto repair instructor in 1974 that was just like you. I always thought that if I could be half as good as he was, i would be doing good. Now if I could be half as good as you, I think I would be an awesome backyard mechanic. Thanks for the videos. They are all amazing.

    Just fixed a no-start concern on 96 GMC 1500 5.7 and P1345 popped up on the Pegasys. That's what I thought I was gonna have to do- reset ignition timing. No big deal haha. Have had to do it a couple times on my S10 4.3 What really helps is if tye distributor housing is square where the hold down sits- grind that thing down with a roto bit til its just round enough to rotate in the hold down while you're setting the timing.

    great help, the van I just bought for work threw the check engine light as Soon as I drove off, seller said he'd "pray it worked out for me" lol. I was told intake gasket was just done, I assumed he didn't time the distributor right, and I was correct. thanks to your video I was able to fix p1345 code.

    by watching this video...it will show you how to do it. You have to set your engine to tdc. then install your dist. once youve done that, this video covers the rest. tdc is your base timing as long the distributor is set right.

    Didn't have a lab scope did tuneup distributor was loose take the code for camshaft crankshaft coalition. I just have a small scanner but look at the timing and you can get it Dead on adjusting distributor and watching timing adjustment on scanner. Works great if you don't have a lab scope use a cheap Harbor Freight scanner and it worked great

    Ok I did what you did and I can’t get no further than 6 degrees per the scan tool. Distributor was placed in with cylinder 1 on TDC. Now I was calibrating it and it was at 17 and it ran smooth. the distributor wouldn’t go any further than 6 towards the drivers side and touches the intake. It shakes and doesn’t idle smoothly like it was at 17. Could it be possible that the timing chain be off by one tooth?

    Thanks for the video my thoughts are I have more issues on my 1999 GMC K2500 Suburban with 7.4L engine my check engine is not on ? Anyway I just replaced the Mass Air flow sensor , Idle Air Control motor , Throttle Position Sensor - these are all on the Throttle Body - Engine starts hard & when I do get it to start it falls on it's face if I dry to drive I couldn't even get out of my driveway I must be missing something big time ?? Any words of wisdom from a master would be much appreciated Thanks

    Here’s my problem, according to the scanner, my timing was 16 degrees off advance. I rotated my distributor one notch and now according to the timing light, I have to turn the advance dial around to 25 degrees to get the marks to line up at the balancer and tab. I have made sure that the rotor button is pointing at number one at TDC but it’s kicking out P01345 and popping out of the tail pipes. Any idea?

    • @keving52002
      @keving52002 9 років тому

      Mr26Huffy I can understand why no response was given to that answer .After doing some reading i found that the timing cant be adjusted on the vortec 4.3. first the timing can only be set my lining up two set of timing marks on the balancer on the crank.the only way timing can be off is from a previous repair ,that involved the removal of the distributor and the teeth are off by one or two. or the timing chain develop slack in it over time.

    • @Mr26Huffy
      @Mr26Huffy 9 років тому

      +keving52002
      That was my assumption but I wanted to make sure. After all what is the difference between a 5.7 and 4.3 except minus 2 cylinders? It is curious that the V-8 would require 1-2 degrees of fine tuning and the V-6 not.

    • @keving52002
      @keving52002 9 років тому

      +Mr26Huffy the only difference is on the 5.7 the destributor can be rotated and on the 4.3 it won't ,if you loosen the bolt on the 4.3 it will not rotate.

    • @mike97rules

      I know this is a year late but you can file off the plastic where the hold down is so the distributor turns freely. Just be careful not to file through or you'll have problems.

    On my truck (1997 4.3L Vortec) there is no adjustment on the distributor, only the slop between the hold down bolt and the distributor clamp. That is all the adjustment there is. Is this what you are working with in the video - this small amount of adjustment? Or are the 5.7L engines different and have more of an adjustment (like a slot in the hold-down of distributor)? Thanks.

    • @ahumm8280
      @ahumm8280 7 років тому +1

      gokblok he is setting the the timing of the spark of the distributor to match the timing of the intake and exhaust valves when both are closed at the combustion stage and the number one piston is at the top dead center position for a complete efficient combustion process. The most sure fire way to find top dead center on the number one cylinder is to have the relative valve cover removed.
      1-Bar the engine over in clockewise rotation.
      2-Rotate until you notice both valve springs are not compressed and both rockers can wiggle freely.
      3-At the same time check that the timing mark on the vibration damper aligns with timing mark on the engine.
      3-Mark the location of where the number 1 position of the rotor would be on the distributor so that it can be installed without the cap for reference.
      4-Install the distributor with the flat of the front parallel to the angle of the intake. Make sure that the cap is lined up with the mark on the distributor. If it drops right in. If it does not, install the distributor in on the cam gear with the cap aligned at the mark. The distributor will not be completely set into the intake. Its ok.
      Bar the engine over until it drops in on its own .
      6- repeat the process of finding no 1 TDC confirming that the timing marks are aligned and that the rotor matches the mark for no 1 on the distributor.
      Good luck to anyone needing this info.

      There are two types of hold-down clamps. Most aftermarket (and some O.E.M.) distributors have the non-adjustable type. Best thing to do here is find an adjustable kind from a junkyard OR get a new clamp from NAPA, O'riely's, Pepboys, or Autozone. Good luck sir!
